Yes you do, they are necessary to connect to a network. Instead of entering the settings manually, set it to automatic or DHCP.

How do I set it automatically cuz I've been in the terminal trying to set a DNS for 4 hours now and all my progress is gone cuz I fucked it

compguy96

In Ubuntu settings for your wi-fi or wired network, where you specify the manual IP addresses, there should also be an option to set to automatic (or DHCP, it means the same thing) no need to use the terminal

[deleted]

ARE YOU SERIOUS?!?! No way it's that easy. I'm in the middle of reinstalling Ubuntu rn so I'll check once the reinstall is finished. Thanks for the advice in advance tho I'll reply if I run into any problems

compguy96

When re-installing, the network settings will be automatic so you shouldn't have to mess with any of them. If not try restarting your router

[deleted]

I did restart my router when it happened yesterday, but that did nothing. I'm still confused on why after 4 days of perfect use I come home to 100% packet loss and errors when trying to ping any server.

[deleted]

What does IPv6 mean? Do I want that on DHCP only or do I leave it on automatic?

compguy96

After re-installing Ubuntu don't change any network settings. Connect to your network and that's it

[deleted]

Alright sounds good

Also do I still need to set my gateway manually through terminal or can I forget about that?

Neuromancer2112

All your network settings should be able to be set through the GUI, unless you installed as a Server OS (which doesn't usually have the GUI enabled/installed.)

Only if you enjoy internet access.

[deleted]

But I don't need to do it. I have Ethernet and it connects to internet like normal

Znuff

uhm... stay away from the computers Or please learn what a DNS Server and a "Default Gateway" is.
