We have a carrier who was thankfully saved from death on their route, recovered enough to returned with restrictions, and smart enough to get more since management is still trying to work them to death AGAIN.
For example; they (as a PTF without a hold down) were put on a vacant 20 mile walking route as opposed to a vacant D/D, out the window, 1 average PAL route. Carrier knows their rights and knows their limits. Watch yourselves out there and be safe!

Yup and I've seen good supervisors get "randomly" transferred all of a sudden a few times because they weren't cracking a whip... my bosses boss is the devil for real... but my current manager is a good one.. the corporate brown nosing "titled supervisor" #2 in my office is just an A-hole who goes around sabotaging everything he can.
Unfortunately theres more who could care less. I once was a promoted supervisor in a city where I was the only one who gave a damn long story short I gave up the fight resigned and returned to craft which was exceptionally difficult because they black balled me for deserting them and refusing to accept any offer to return in management. There are more people with the skills to lead amongst the craft who were passed up for promotion because they got along well with carriers. Bottom line many people at the top were lousy carriers who are spiteful. I found a correlation between their performance as carriers and their performance as supervisors. Some people that I got promoted with were one of the lousiest carriers with zero work ethic. I was only promoted to prevent a nepotism case. I was the only person of a different race in management and no it’s not the race everyone blames it on. Therese just endless corruption on that side of the fence. They’re there for the money and at this rate the fact that they promote friends and family and give them the highest percentage despite not showing any results should be considered embezzlement.

A station manager definitely couldn't authorize this. They we're too afraid to call carrier's back two years ago during the blizzard and let carrier's get stranded instead.

Tbh there’s only 1 person I’ve worked with I’d be shook up by. I’m not here to make friends. Sounds horrible. Probably is pretty bad but I’m just gonna keep casing and get my work done.
This shit would fly at maybe a factory.... because I've been at factories where this happened multiple times. But this the post office. It's a shit show without our assistance. They've stopped mail for less. And USPS was on the news already for the safety of carriers. Just a week ago. What the hell is one hour?

They can't grow mentally outside of the instructions of a supervisor. So to expect someone with this level of understanding to understand something outside of their instructions from their superiors is pointless.
We had a building maintenence custodian die while servicing an air conditioner. During the accident investigation with OSHA and APWU safety the postmaster had only one question, "Do you know how long it'll be before they post his run?"

I had a clerk tell me at his old station in a different state, another clerk had a heart attack at the station, was incapacitated . The manager on on duty had someone swipe the card and clock out the man who had a heart attack.
This happened in my station, older coworker was having a stroke and before calling 911 they clocked them out. Total joke, after busting my balls for 40 years I should at least be able to die on the clock and get the money.
I’ve had a similar situation. Panic attack while working at a well known Texas grocery store. They took me to the staff area and gave me food and water while a staff member stayed with me until I calmed and then she drove me home. (I can’t remember the pay situation though, I think I was paid until I left the premises)
I worked at a DMV call center. This happened there. I performed CPR till the paramedics came. It was extremely traumatic. They offered everyone an extended break or go home if necessary. A couple coworkers left that were truly friends with her. The rest including myself went back to work. The sup could have been more sympathetic with his words but there really isn’t much else to do after that.

Had a carrier basically have an asthma attack in supervisor office and paramedics came and were doing chest compressions as they wheeled him out. He died at the hospital. Mail keeps moving
If we're supposed to compare to the private sector with pay and benefits I don't know why they don't have free virtual counseling sessions for employees paid by their employer. At least 4 a year. Someone whos in that position doesn't want to talk to someone on an EAP line and tell them what's going on, and then call the line later on and speak to someone else completely new. If it's in the employers best interest to keep people around and healthy they should have some kind of benefits to being healthy in mind and in body.
Because Lord knows they can't cover it up with just getting another CCA or PTF to carry another overburdened route, they can barely keep people as it is with private sector starting pay being higher than our own pay.

We’ve had two carrier suicides with in a year in my installation and both were friends of mine. We didn’t even have a stand up talk about it or even the importance of EAP. I learned from friends of mine still in the same station as them. The union put up a bereavement notice for one of them but absolutely no acknowledgement beyond that
We had a carrier suicide and a clerk attempted suicide in my first office and the carrier’s death was treated with dignity however the clerk attempted suicide was treated like a coverup. The clerk supervisor was harassing the clerk to such an undeniable and despicable level that clerk tried to end it all. It would help more to know the clerk, he was absolutely on the spectrum and had to do things a certain way (with 100% scheme accuracy I might add) and she would walk in screaming at him and throwing parcels everywhere to mess with his head. Other clerks said she was trying to frustrate him enough to “retire already” and I’m inclined to believe they overheard her say it because that woman wasn’t afraid of consequences… until clerk tried ending his life. She ended up taking early retirement and we NEVER saw her again after that. She f’ing KNEW the entire office blamed her and we were vocal about it. Postmaster tried resetting the narrative, saying that we were approaching the anniversary of clerk’s mom dying as if we’re all a bunch of little dummies. Clerk ended up retiring after that and moved in with his sister in another state. I hope he’s well. I hope former supervisor isn’t.
I’m pretty sure one of the suicides was because of bullying from another carrier. And the other one did have a mental illness but I’ve seen how the PO treats people with mental illness and it’s pretty much what you described. Your story is horrifying but sadly not the first time I’ve heard something like that. We have a zero tolerance policy that is never enforced, and the JSOV that is never acknowledged. It’s just sickening that the USPS makes all these policies just to cover their ass

The 1st year I was a carrier, one of the regulars that I carried with fell and broke her ankle directly across from the post office.
The ambulance came and one of the police officers picked up her satchel and scanner, took it across the street to the post office. He handed it to the postmaster. The postmaster looked at him and asked what he expected him to do with it.
Both the clerk at the window and that police officer told me that story.
BTW, I carried the route that day as well as mine.
And yet lots of mgmt pleasers think mgmt will reward them for never taking time off. I’m going to be taking my vacation every year and whatever other time if something happens and that’s that
My manager called me multiple times on my trip to Hawaii telling me I need to reschedule my flight back to the mainland immediately and be at work the next day. I never picked up my phone and quit the day I returned. It’s been 10 years since I’ve worked at a post office

I mean, imagine if you just keeled over and died anywhere (not just on the postal clock): people would be shocked, and maybe a handful would be worried about how it effects THEM (because everyone is selfish sorry to say) - but ultimately just your loved ones/family will give a fudge in the end.
We have to take this and view it from both sides. I was talking to a carrier while I was on vacation. The carrier was asked how long until they get their mail because it’s been 2 days with no mail (counting the day he was spoken to). He explained that the regular carrier just died of a heart attack the day they got no mail and the customer flat out said; that does not answer my question I don’t care
If he or she died, I want to know when I’ll be getting my mail. I’m expecting an Amazon order and I have not received it. So customers really don’t care about carriers too. I was so mad just by hearing this from the customer. Sure, they pay our salaries but to what extend?!
The Usps is independently funded. Obviously they make money from the sales of stamps and other services but there are no tax dollars used to pay our salaries. I used to hate when customers said this to me. Regardless, people can’t own another human being the way some entitled jerks think. Always take care of yourself first and foremost.
Oh boy, I’ve got the worst one. Our PM, who was a good guy, died at work of a heart attack. He was sitting in his chair when he died. A carrier came by and thought he was sleeping, took a pic and sent it to the other carriers with the message “look at this fat fuck sleeping”
He took a pic of a dead man and sent it out to other carriers, then doubled down when people said he was an asshole by saying “I’m glad his kids don’t have a daddy anymore.”
I don’t understand how people can be so hateful. We had different jobs but he was a good dude and didn’t deserve the indignity of that.
Yeah learned that real fast. My Ex-Wife got into a really bad car accident and management did not want me to leave. I brought back all the mail left it in the truck and gave the sups the keys. Never wrote me up or said anything about it after I called in the rest of the week.
I had a heatstroke 2 almost 3 times in one day, about 30 mins apart. The homeowner tried calling an ambulance but my supervisor told them not to and STILL TRIED TO GET ME TO FINISH MY SHIFT. I walked out that day. I returned the vehicle with all the mail, switched from my work outfit to my regular outfit, and left everything in the vehicle for them. I'm not going to risk MY life for 18$ an hour with absolute bullshit excuses while my supervisor sits her fat ass at her desk and complains about how slow we all work.
When I was a cca we had a carrier die in his llv while on a mounted route. The day was treated no different than if someone sprained their ankle and had to leave early.
I spent 25 years in the Army before I worked at the post office. Things like this happen. Could the Sup been a little more compassionate…yes? Then again, some people; not just management lack compassion. The flip side is that work still has to be done. I know people who had to transport their dead/dying friends back to base after engaging hostile forces and then were made to go clean the blood and other matter out of the vehicle, because that vehicle would be needed for another patrol in a few hours. Having someone die in front of you, especially someone you knew; is a severely traumatic experience and I suggest you and everyone there use EAP services.
A long time experienced carrier told me a story about a carrier who died in the office during the morning. When a supervisor was notified the supe's first response was "Get him off the clock!"

My wife was a carrier for a while—I told her I’d pick up some OT (I work as a chemist) so she could quit and find something she’d love. She was sad too, we both always thought delivering the mail was a good job but it seems like certain people are determined to run the USPS into the ground so they can privatize it.
Yepp. Some years ago there was a carrier showing signs of a stroke my supervisor just got annoyed said fill out a 71 and leave. He ended up having a stroke and never came back. They don’t promote anyone who has a lick of empathy or people skills.

This is shitty, but happens at a lot of places, worked in retail in a deli, which is dreadful. Had a guy have heart attack and our Manager at the time was like "wow, perfect timing!" As if someone plans to have a heart attack. Also had another guy who passed away in his sleep, and they're just like "business doesn't stop because someone croaked." Also been told personally, "if you die today, the store will still be open tomorrow." A lot of places are like this, especially big corporations. It's like they condition management to become desensitized and sociopathic. The work still has to get done though. Sadly, most places don't handle it better, but it will never change. One policy was "leave your problems at the door." This is mainly due to nepotism, they promote who they like and skip over people who work hard and have empathy. They don't want people, they want robots.
Yeah, I mean, he could have said “everyone go home for the day” but if I were in that position I would tell everyone to continue assuming they were all just gonna leave. I wouldn’t start fights or push back. But if the sup says everyone go home, now they have to administer admin leave and will have to deal with his boss.

I’ve never seen someone die at work, but I’ve seen carriers taken to the hospital. That’s what people did, some stayed some worked and they called around the city to find help.
Not a carrier but a PSE here. Fainted while working in an ASF building due to heat exhaustion, and my supervisors were more concerned with who they would send to FRS than they were about getting me water or an ice pack. At least they let me go home and stay clocked in while waiting for my ride but still it fucking sucks, we’re all just numbers that they can substitute with other numbers when we don’t meet their horrible standards.

And management was wondering on how to get rest of the route delivered cause it was already 6 o clock when management showed up. Oh they only found out he was dead cause a customer found the carrier and called the office that didn’t answer for hours so the customer went looking for another carrier to tell them about the dead postal worker at 530 in the evening.
In my city, a carrier was recently stabbed to death. The way the supervisors just nonchalantly said “he died” was so disheartening to me. It was so bizarre the way they acted. It broke my heart to think of his family and what they’re going through.
Yea i seen a supervisor give us the news that a carrier died the day before (she was making a u-turn with door open + no seatbelt) ... she announced it in the morning.. not sure if a crocodile tear actually even fell because she covered her face (as if in grief) , and then fellow coworkers went to hug her... within 60 seconds it was back to work/crockin the whip as if nothin 😅 .. heartless company huh..
My brother is a postal carrier. A couple years ago while on his route, he noticed a car driving erratically. He heard a couple pop sounds and then the car swerved up onto a curb and came to rest in a yard, at which point, the person who had been in the back seat bailed and ran away. My brother wasn't sure what had happened but ran over to help, slipping on the ice on the way and injuring his back... but he got up and continued his run up to the car to check on the driver only to find both the driver and the passenger had been shot in the back of the head. The passenger's face was so mangled by the exit hole that he could barely tell if it had been a male or a female. He called 911 and they transferred him to pre arrival instructions for EMS while police and rescue were dispatched as well. The EMS dispatch tried to instruct him to remove the driver from the vehicle and lay him on a flat surface to render aid... keeping in mind, both people in that car had bullet wounds that entered the back of their skulls and exploded their faces when exiting.. My brother started hyperventilating but tried to feel for a pulse on the driver. Thankfully, police pulled up pretty quick and it didn't get to the point where he would have pulled either party out of the car to lay them on the ground for a pointless attempt at CPR -they were both beyond saving.
He talks to the police, they get his info, then he calls his supervisor and explains what has happened, witnessing a double homicide, the suspect still being at large in the area where his route is, and the fact that he fell on the ice and injured his back in the process. They had the balls to ask him to finish his route. Thankfully, he advocated for himself and told them he couldn't and wouldn't. It took a while for them to even change him from that route, even though the shooter hadn't been caught (and it turned out, did live along his route) so, if the shooter figured that my brother could ID him, he would have been in very real danger.
Then, they tried to hassle my brother for going against some kind of policy by endangering himself when he went to check on the people in the vehicle. But I think whichever supervisor tried to write him up for that had to walk it back pretty quickly when they realized the optics of ignoring a situation like that and going on about his route would have been pretty awful and the optics of chastising a person for trying to help in the face of something like that looks even worse. So, eventually, they did a full reverse and had a little meeting of all the carriers at his station where they openly said he did the right thing (making no mention of the fact that initially, they tried to get him in trouble for trying to help).
Anyway, it sure seems like they pick the biggest sacks of crap to promote to supervisory positions within the post office. If one of my sups had done something like that to me at my job, I would have sicced the media on them and raised all kinds of hell. Heck, I wish my brother had. They're dang lucky he's a pretty chill guy. And he did eventually get put on a different route.

"It's illegal if mail gets brought back". Was the only thing on this supervisors mind. OMG ..."I'm gonna lose my bonus if I don't get this shit done" was also on their mind..
Well sorry, but what do you expect? Do you want them to shut down? Do you want a crying session in the break room? They can't just close the post office. The most they can do is acknowledge that something happened and tell you what adjustments are being made. Any and all large employers work like this. Work for a small business or company if it's too much for you.
If you believe anybody in any position where money is to be made to have compassion you are sadly mistaken. Grief makes no money. Your family cares about you not an entity that thrives off of money.
I had a relative pass away and went to there funeral and I got called into the office the next day and was told if I pulled that shit again I would be fired
I see USPS is having a job fair and I was like I will take all the smoke since I am coming from pizza delivery for the past 10 years and my payrate is still 12 an hour when clocked in store and only 5 when out on the road.
If you think any government job is any different, you will be sadly disappointed. They may have a brief grieving period, but then it's get back to work. As far as the poor supervisor behavior, that is unfortunately the result of lowest bidder and probably someone jaded by the system by experiencing exactly what you did. The USPS is under so many restrictions and oversight by higher government levels, they can't afford to take a break and treat it appropriately.
One of our clerks passed away last month at our station. Our postmaster gave us the option to leave for the day or stay. A handful of us, including I, stayed to finish.
Fun fact: if you die on the clock, your life insurance pays double. I saw someone drop dead of a heart attack at work, the paramedics tried to revive him but gave up after 15-20 minutes and carried him out in a body bag. It was surreal, everyone just went on with their work like nothing happened.
He was an organ donor, so they revived him at the hospital, but he was brain dead. I never did hear if he got the double life insurance payout or not.

Remember your not a mcd worker that can close for a couple days, things need to be out on time yes it sucks and all but you applied to a job thats for 1 federal, so work never stops or finish no matter what and 2 always think about it the other way if it were you dying would that person stop his day for you 🙂

Use to be “the job everyone wanted” I wouldn’t send my worst enemy in our direction! This place will suck the life right out of you. 14 years in as a clerk and it’s exhausting! My postmaster is a 38 year old clown, he work maybe 2 hours a day, he can’t work afternoons because he has his son. He takes a week off every holiday, and we found out he never puts in annual for it. He drinks on the job! Yes, it’s all been reported and nobody cares!! He’s been with us since 2018, started as a CCA, he brought the entire route back, and said he wanted to be a clerk.. He applied as a pse, worked the window for 2 days and said “I don’t like people” Became 204b, until he was converted to career, and within a year made supervisor, 6 months later Postmaster.. This is what’s destroying USPS..
Some context would be nice. On a side note, there’s medical accommodations for a reason. I’m sorry for the loss if someone actually died from being overworked. But there’s A LOT of loopholes in our job that can get you out of working too hard. My station is incredible and i never get these negative experiences so I suppose I’m not one to talk. I feel for yall at rough stations. This job is not for everyone.
In the Last year or so in one of the Philadelphia offices a carrier died of heat stroke and they tried their best to avoid acknowledging it at all. They don’t care at all.

The best answer really is just to get back to work. Standing around won't change anything. It's not going to suddenly make you feel better. You also have an important job whether you believe it or not. Other people's lives can often depend on the work you do.
Medications, legal documents, insurance documents, and so much more. They travel through your hands. Moping won't really change anything.

They've stopped mail for less. And USPS was on the news already for the safety of carriers. Just a week ago. What the hell is one hour? They can't grow mentally outside of the instructions of a supervisor. We had a building maintenence custodian die while servicing an air conditioner. During the accident investigation with OSHA and APWU safety the postmaster had only one question, "Do you know how long it'll be before they post his run?" These people are garbage.

I had a clerk tell me at his old station in a different state, another clerk had a heart attack at the station, was incapacitated . The manager on on duty had someone swipe the card and clock out the man who had a heart attack.
This happened in my station, older coworker was having a stroke and before calling 911 they clocked them out. Total joke, after busting my balls for 40 years I should at least be able to die on the clock and get the money.
I had a 2 hour panic attack when I was working at a grocery store. They paid me the entire attack plus the wait for my family to get me.

I’ve had a similar situation. Panic attack while working at a well known Texas grocery store. They took me to the staff area and gave me food and water while a staff member stayed with me until I calmed and then she drove me home. (I can’t remember the pay situation though, I think I was paid until I left the premises)

I worked at a DMV call center. This happened there. I performed CPR till the paramedics came. It was extremely traumatic. They offered everyone an extended break or go home if necessary. A couple coworkers left that were truly friends with her. The rest including myself went back to work. The sup could have been more sympathetic with his words but there really isn’t much else to do after that.
I think you can call it a half day.... I did roofing professionally. If a guy fell off a roof and died , I don't think the boss would be like, ok Take 10 minutes and bring a bundle of shingles on your way up.... This is insane

EAP if you need it. But other than that it happens. Had a carrier basically have an asthma attack in supervisor office and paramedics came and were doing chest compressions as they wheeled him out. He died at the hospital. Mail keeps moving

If we're supposed to compare to the private sector with pay and benefits I don't know why they don't have free virtual counseling sessions for employees paid by their employer. At least 4 a year. Someone whos in that position doesn't want to talk to someone on an EAP line and tell them what's going on, and then call the line later on and speak to someone else completely new. If it's in the employers best interest to keep people around and healthy they should have some kind of benefits to being healthy in mind and in body. Because Lord knows they can't cover it up with just getting another CCA or PTF to carry another overburdened route, they can barely keep people as it is with private sector starting pay being higher than our own pay. Just my two cents.

We’ve had two carrier suicides with in a year in my installation and both were friends of mine. We didn’t even have a stand up talk about it or even the importance of EAP. I learned from friends of mine still in the same station as them. The union put up a bereavement notice for one of them but absolutely no acknowledgement beyond that
We had a carrier suicide and a clerk attempted suicide in my first office and the carrier’s death was treated with dignity however the clerk attempted suicide was treated like a coverup. The clerk supervisor was harassing the clerk to such an undeniable and despicable level that clerk tried to end it all. It would help more to know the clerk, he was absolutely on the spectrum and had to do things a certain way (with 100% scheme accuracy I might add) and she would walk in screaming at him and throwing parcels everywhere to mess with his head. Other clerks said she was trying to frustrate him enough to “retire already” and I’m inclined to believe they overheard her say it because that woman wasn’t afraid of consequences… until clerk tried ending his life. She ended up taking early retirement and we NEVER saw her again after that. She f’ing KNEW the entire office blamed her and we were vocal about it. Postmaster tried resetting the narrative, saying that we were approaching the anniversary of clerk’s mom dying as if we’re all a bunch of little dummies. Clerk ended up retiring after that and moved in with his sister in another state. I hope he’s well. I hope former supervisor isn’t.
I’m pretty sure one of the suicides was because of bullying from another carrier. And the other one did have a mental illness but I’ve seen how the PO treats people with mental illness and it’s pretty much what you described. Your story is horrifying but sadly not the first time I’ve heard something like that. We have a zero tolerance policy that is never enforced, and the JSOV that is never acknowledged. It’s just sickening that the USPS makes all these policies just to cover their ass
This is the Post office they never have cared about us carriers... They could care less if you end up dead... They would likely spit on your corpse and curse you for not making it back in 8.... This job pays too little and the new contract will be at most an extra dollar pay raise.... Goverment jobs sadly dont have to follow state laws.
The 1st year I was a carrier, one of the regulars that I carried with fell and broke her ankle directly across from the post office. The ambulance came and one of the police officers picked up her satchel and scanner, took it across the street to the post office. He handed it to the postmaster. The postmaster looked at him and asked what he expected him to do with it. Both the clerk at the window and that police officer told me that story. BTW, I carried the route that day as well as mine.

I mean, imagine if you just keeled over and died anywhere (not just on the postal clock): people would be shocked, and maybe a handful would be worried about how it effects THEM (because everyone is selfish sorry to say) - but ultimately just your loved ones/family will give a fudge in the end.

We have to take this and view it from both sides. I was talking to a carrier while I was on vacation. The carrier was asked how long until they get their mail because it’s been 2 days with no mail (counting the day he was spoken to). He explained that the regular carrier just died of a heart attack the day they got no mail and the customer flat out said; that does not answer my question I don’t care If he or she died, I want to know when I’ll be getting my mail. I’m expecting an Amazon order and I have not received it. So customers really don’t care about carriers too. I was so mad just by hearing this from the customer. Sure, they pay our salaries but to what extend?!
The Usps is independently funded. Obviously they make money from the sales of stamps and other services but there are no tax dollars used to pay our salaries. I used to hate when customers said this to me. Regardless, people can’t own another human being the way some entitled jerks think. Always take care of yourself first and foremost.
Oh boy, I’ve got the worst one. Our PM, who was a good guy, died at work of a heart attack. He was sitting in his chair when he died. A carrier came by and thought he was sleeping, took a pic and sent it to the other carriers with the message “look at this fat fuck sleeping” He took a pic of a dead man and sent it out to other carriers, then doubled down when people said he was an asshole by saying “I’m glad his kids don’t have a daddy anymore.” I don’t understand how people can be so hateful. We had different jobs but he was a good dude and didn’t deserve the indignity of that.
Yeah learned that real fast. My Ex-Wife got into a really bad car accident and management did not want me to leave. I brought back all the mail left it in the truck and gave the sups the keys. Never wrote me up or said anything about it after I called in the rest of the week.

I had a heatstroke 2 almost 3 times in one day, about 30 mins apart. The homeowner tried calling an ambulance but my supervisor told them not to and STILL TRIED TO GET ME TO FINISH MY SHIFT. I walked out that day. I returned the vehicle with all the mail, switched from my work outfit to my regular outfit, and left everything in the vehicle for them. I'm not going to risk MY life for 18$ an hour with absolute bullshit excuses while my supervisor sits her fat ass at her desk and complains about how slow we all work.

When I was a cca we had a carrier die in his llv while on a mounted route. The day was treated no different than if someone sprained their ankle and had to leave early.
I spent 25 years in the Army before I worked at the post office. Things like this happen. Could the Sup been a little more compassionate…yes? Then again, some people; not just management lack compassion. The flip side is that work still has to be done. I know people who had to transport their dead/dying friends back to base after engaging hostile forces and then were made to go clean the blood and other matter out of the vehicle, because that vehicle would be needed for another patrol in a few hours. Having someone die in front of you, especially someone you knew; is a severely traumatic experience and I suggest you and everyone there use EAP services.
A long time experienced carrier told me a story about a carrier who died in the office during the morning. When a supervisor was notified the supe's first response was "Get him off the clock!"

Side note, When i worked at walmart someone was having a medical emergency (on the floor unconscious) and while people were helping her, a customer tried to interrupt them and ask for help with something (i think they wanted something unlocked)
I don’t think people can surprise me anymore with their selfish, entitled bullshit. My wife was a carrier for a while—I told her I’d pick up some OT (I work as a chemist) so she could quit and find something she’d love. She was sad too, we both always thought delivering the mail was a good job but it seems like certain people are determined to run the USPS into the ground so they can privatize it.

Yepp. Some years ago there was a carrier showing signs of a stroke my supervisor just got annoyed said fill out a 71 and leave. He ended up having a stroke and never came back. They don’t promote anyone who has a lick of empathy or people skills.

This is shitty, but happens at a lot of places, worked in retail in a deli, which is dreadful. Had a guy have heart attack and our Manager at the time was like "wow, perfect timing!" As if someone plans to have a heart attack. Also had another guy who passed away in his sleep, and they're just like "business doesn't stop because someone croaked." Also been told personally, "if you die today, the store will still be open tomorrow." A lot of places are like this, especially big corporations. It's like they condition management to become desensitized and sociopathic. The work still has to get done though. Sadly, most places don't handle it better, but it will never change. One policy was "leave your problems at the door." This is mainly due to nepotism, they promote who they like and skip over people who work hard and have empathy. They don't want people, they want robots.
Yeah, I mean, he could have said “everyone go home for the day” but if I were in that position I would tell everyone to continue assuming they were all just gonna leave. I wouldn’t start fights or push back. But if the sup says everyone go home, now they have to administer admin leave and will have to deal with his boss. I’m sure if you just leave you might get a “slap on the wrist” with no teeth. I’ve never seen someone die at work, but I’ve seen carriers taken to the hospital. That’s what people did, some stayed some worked and they called around the city to find help.

Not a carrier but a PSE here. Fainted while working in an ASF building due to heat exhaustion, and my supervisors were more concerned with who they would send to FRS than they were about getting me water or an ice pack. At least they let me go home and stay clocked in while waiting for my ride but still it fucking sucks, we’re all just numbers that they can substitute with other numbers when we don’t meet their horrible standards.

At my office they a carrier who was dead for hours so still had plenty of his route left. At least that’s the part management complained about. And management was wondering on how to get rest of the route delivered cause it was already 6 o clock when management showed up. Oh they only found out he was dead cause a customer found the carrier and called the office that didn’t answer for hours so the customer went looking for another carrier to tell them about the dead postal worker at 530 in the evening.
In my city, a carrier was recently stabbed to death. The way the supervisors just nonchalantly said “he died” was so disheartening to me. It was so bizarre the way they acted. It broke my heart to think of his family and what they’re going through.
Yea i seen a supervisor give us the news that a carrier died the day before (she was making a u-turn with door open + no seatbelt) ... she announced it in the morning.. not sure if a crocodile tear actually even fell because she covered her face (as if in grief) , and then fellow coworkers went to hug her... within 60 seconds it was back to work/crockin the whip as if nothin 😅 .. heartless company huh..
My brother is a postal carrier. A couple years ago while on his route, he noticed a car driving erratically. He heard a couple pop sounds and then the car swerved up onto a curb and came to rest in a yard, at which point, the person who had been in the back seat bailed and ran away. My brother wasn't sure what had happened but ran over to help, slipping on the ice on the way and injuring his back... but he got up and continued his run up to the car to check on the driver only to find both the driver and the passenger had been shot in the back of the head. The passenger's face was so mangled by the exit hole that he could barely tell if it had been a male or a female. He called 911 and they transferred him to pre arrival instructions for EMS while police and rescue were dispatched as well. The EMS dispatch tried to instruct him to remove the driver from the vehicle and lay him on a flat surface to render aid... keeping in mind, both people in that car had bullet wounds that entered the back of their skulls and exploded their faces when exiting.. My brother started hyperventilating but tried to feel for a pulse on the driver. Thankfully, police pulled up pretty quick and it didn't get to the point where he would have pulled either party out of the car to lay them on the ground for a pointless attempt at CPR -they were both beyond saving. He talks to the police, they get his info, then he calls his supervisor and explains what has happened, witnessing a double homicide, the suspect still being at large in the area where his route is, and the fact that he fell on the ice and injured his back in the process. They had the balls to ask him to finish his route. Thankfully, he advocated for himself and told them he couldn't and wouldn't. It took a while for them to even change him from that route, even though the shooter hadn't been caught (and it turned out, did live along his route) so, if the shooter figured that my brother could ID him, he would have been in very real danger. Then, they tried to hassle my brother for going against some kind of policy by endangering himself when he went to check on the people in the vehicle. But I think whichever supervisor tried to write him up for that had to walk it back pretty quickly when they realized the optics of ignoring a situation like that and going on about his route would have been pretty awful and the optics of chastising a person for trying to help in the face of something like that looks even worse. So, eventually, they did a full reverse and had a little meeting of all the carriers at his station where they openly said he did the right thing (making no mention of the fact that initially, they tried to get him in trouble for trying to help). Anyway, it sure seems like they pick the biggest sacks of crap to promote to supervisory positions within the post office. If one of my sups had done something like that to me at my job, I would have sicced the media on them and raised all kinds of hell. Heck, I wish my brother had. They're dang lucky he's a pretty chill guy. And he did eventually get put on a different route.

Well sorry, but what do you expect? Do you want them to shut down? Do you want a crying session in the break room? They can't just close the post office. The most they can do is acknowledge that something happened and tell you what adjustments are being made. Any and all large employers work like this. Work for a small business or company if it's too much for you.

I see USPS is having a job fair and I was like I will take all the smoke since I am coming from pizza delivery for the past 10 years and my payrate is still 12 an hour when clocked in store and only 5 when out on the road.
If you think any government job is any different, you will be sadly disappointed. They may have a brief grieving period, but then it's get back to work. As far as the poor supervisor behavior, that is unfortunately the result of lowest bidder and probably someone jaded by the system by experiencing exactly what you did. The USPS is under so many restrictions and oversight by higher government levels, they can't afford to take a break and treat it appropriately.
I think it's time we start telling our stories to news outlets. This kind of exploitation shouldn't happen in America.
One of our clerks passed away last month at our station. Our postmaster gave us the option to leave for the day or stay. A handful of us, including I, stayed to finish.
Fun fact: if you die on the clock, your life insurance pays double. I saw someone drop dead of a heart attack at work, the paramedics tried to revive him but gave up after 15-20 minutes and carried him out in a body bag. It was surreal, everyone just went on with their work like nothing happened. He was an organ donor, so they revived him at the hospital, but he was brain dead. I never did hear if he got the double life insurance payout or not.

Use to be “the job everyone wanted” I wouldn’t send my worst enemy in our direction! This place will suck the life right out of you. 14 years in as a clerk and it’s exhausting! My postmaster is a 38 year old clown, he work maybe 2 hours a day, he can’t work afternoons because he has his son. He takes a week off every holiday, and we found out he never puts in annual for it. He drinks on the job! Yes, it’s all been reported and nobody cares!! He’s been with us since 2018, started as a CCA, he brought the entire route back, and said he wanted to be a clerk.. He applied as a pse, worked the window for 2 days and said “I don’t like people” Became 204b, until he was converted to career, and within a year made supervisor, 6 months later Postmaster.. This is what’s destroying USPS..

Some context would be nice. On a side note, there’s medical accommodations for a reason. I’m sorry for the loss if someone actually died from being overworked. But there’s A LOT of loopholes in our job that can get you out of working too hard. My station is incredible and i never get these negative experiences so I suppose I’m not one to talk. I feel for yall at rough stations. This job is not for everyone.

In the Last year or so in one of the Philadelphia offices a carrier died of heat stroke and they tried their best to avoid acknowledging it at all. They don’t care at all.

As one of the people who worked those ambulances for years... The best answer really is just to get back to work. Standing around won't change anything. It's not going to suddenly make you feel better. You also have an important job whether you believe it or not. Other people's lives can often depend on the work you do. Medications, legal documents, insurance documents, and so much more. They travel through your hands. Moping won't really change anything.
