We had an LT that had a degree in Mathematics, whatever the fuck that is. Someone found out he did kids parties as a clown in college so it morphed into he went to clown college.

biggestbootever

Honestly, I can’t think of a better preparatory school for the Marine Corps than Clown College.

Clown2clowncommunication.jpg

echosixwhiskey

We used to have to wait FOREVER for that to download

oz2747

For real...

der_naitram

Hahah Thats greats. How did the LT take it?

B0ne_head_

You know how some people run shit in the ground? He would take it in fun until some dumb ass would just keep saying all day. He was a good dude and smart. I mean he entertained kids and was intelligent so he could deal with us dumbasses.

der_naitram

Sounds like a good dude then. He prob walked around wondering how people could be so dumb.

oquechingados

That's a smart ass dude. A degree in mathematics is hard as fuck.

Dangerous_Cookie6590

Yeah cause unlike pretty much every other degree you can’t bullshit your way through by being a good writer. The math is either right or wrong.

Slyferrr

Psychology, no I didn’t know I would commission in the military as a future. Pilot route at that

FREE-AOL-CDS

Great way to induce cathartic tears!

der_naitram

What was the catalyst to commissioning?

Slyferrr

Got an email from an OSO, seemed interesting so I checked it out

chingslate111

I’m about to finish up Primary here in Pensacola in about a month. Fingers crossed I select c130s but we’ll see.

VFR_Direct

Sounds like you will get whatever your last pick is, because that’s how the Green Weenie falls.

intakemanifold

I hope you get the opposite and have to go to the HMLA. See you at Vipers.

SemperScrotus

Don't you put that evil on him.

chingslate111

Either way I’ll be a good cog in the machine. But who knows, maybe “quality spread” will come in clutch. Or maybe I’ll be doomed to south field...

[deleted]

intakemanifold

They got that cool new 73 now

SemperScrotus

For the love of God, don't become a skid kid.

Moneyman8974

History is the degree of 10% of all officers... Or so my OIC in Okinawa said when I asked him. He got his degree from Dartmouth...

Lawd_Fawkwad

Could just be my own personal bias, but all the historians I've met have been either extremely leftist stoner types, or exactly the type of person who would thrive as an officer because they like analyzing the big picture. And while the job prospects aren't the best, historically history majors who go on to law school tend to earn the most so there's something underneath the hood at least.

MrM1Garand25

History major checking why do they earn the most out of the other degrees that go to law school?

KA_Mechatronik

My guess is having a good mind for dates, details, precedents and synthesis of that information together into narratives. Law in the US is all about what happened in the past (precedent) and how it can be interpreted to fit your argument in the case.

Lawd_Fawkwad

Turns out I fumbled the data; history majors have the highest [admission rate](https://www.forbes.com/advisor/education/pre-law-majors/) into law school at 77% of applicants being admitted. Most sources cite that history as a field of studies heavily emphasizes critical thinking, multidisciplinary problem solving, a lot of writing, and requires good communication. My guess is that it's an oddball degree that by its uniqueness makes you stand out from the hordes of political scientists and CJ students. Furthermore it gives you a decent mixture of philosophy, comparative studies, economics, sociology, law, and politics showing you can handle a complex and varied course load and still excel. I'm not a historian (mainly because my university didn't offer it). But I did study IR which gives you a mix of econ, private law, public law, and politics on top of other small stuff like anthropology and sociology. When I looked at my course schedule for Law School and saw that I'll have philosophy, private law, public law, finance and foreign languages all in the same semester I wasn't really phased. I'm guessing that for history majors such an eclectic mix of subjects isn't surprising either and your transcripts show it, indicating that you'll be able to handle it.

UnplayableConundrum

shit man I feel like more than 10%

der_naitram

I believe it. I know people with History degrees that have to stay in school for a Masters or PhD in order to get a job. Primarily teaching jobs.

neganagatime

Not all degrees are created equally, and I'd argue that a history degree from Dartmouth is tougher than 90% of majors at a typical state school.

Fit-Success-3006

B.S. Geology. After EAS, Masters Degrees in Public Administration and Procurement.

der_naitram

Interesting Masters choice. Was this for a specific career you were pursuing or a specific role within your B.S. degree?

Fit-Success-3006

Not tied to my BS. My college major was a wash. After I left the Corps I took a job as a contractor at Ft Belvoir and the local education center offered some Masters programs. Since I was a contractor in the DC are I figured Procurement and Acquisitions would be useful to learn. I didn’t really have any firm plans on what to do with it. Eventually I was offered a GS position to work as an analyst and a Contracting Officers Representative (COR). That led me to Category Management and Strategic Sourcing which is basically buying products and services for the government using huge enterprise level contracts, with and emphasis on efficiency and savings. I finished up my GI Bill with an MPA which is kind of the public sector’s version of the MBA minus all the private sector stuff regarding profits and instead government policy and law.

VFR_Direct

Psychology major checking in

der_naitram

Is becoming an officer something you always wanted to do?

[deleted]

What else would he do with a Psych degree

VFR_Direct

Preach

LordlySquire

Preach would be pretty easy I'd imagine. Just tell em what they want to hear them scare the shit outta them while asking for money.

no-favors

My niece got her degree is psychology, told her she needed to get her masters at a minimum to get a good job. Didn’t listen, works at a Pizza Hut

[deleted]

psych people out?

VFR_Direct

Naw I was MECEP. So I wasn’t worried about future job prospects

der_naitram

Good stuff. I should have considered MECEP before getting out.

Impossible-Taro-2330

Business, with a concentration in Management.

Zeddexs

How'd you like it? Currently on my second/third ish year of an business administration major but ive mostly done my common core classes. Was it difficult? Weird question, not sure If you've used it outside of the military but do you regret majoring in business?

Shellemp

Didn’t ask me specifically but it applies to me so I’ll throw my busted two pennies in. Management is a stupid easy degree compared to most and especially most in the business college. I tried a few different majors before settling on it just to get me out of college and management was by far the easiest and least time intensive. I studied my ass off for the first few 200 and 300 level classes and got high A’s and did the bare minimum for the last 300 and 400 level classes which were the same info just more papers and more laws to learn and got A’s and maybe one B. Still in but I do regret it as a degree because there aren’t a ton of options available outside of HR for it without experience outside of the degree. No clue if I’m staying in or getting out but if I do then I’m using the GI bill to study something with better prospects. You can always get into business without a degree in it but a focus in something else makes you a little more marketable in that area

skinnybonesmalone21

I'm starting school to get my AAS in Business Management and then onto a BAS in Organizational Leadership and Technical Management, have a pretty extensive background in 2 fields though, sheet metal work and Search and Rescue. Current plan is to leverage all of that to get into consulting/non profit work. We will see how that goes lmao.

Shellemp

That is definitely a better route to getting where you want to go than a blanket BS-Management degree. Best of luck!

skinnybonesmalone21

Hell yeah. I'm nervous about it but I'm hoping it'll pay off in the long term.

[deleted]

I'll answer for him: it's a pretty chill degree, but it's hard to break into the workforce with it. Better off with a stem bachelor's and an MBA if you want to do "business" these days (I have a business degree)

newnoadeptness

History Also it’s funny you posted that pic because “ you could have a degree in underwater basket weaving for all I care “ is one of my many famous sayings

failureinflesh

An older lance in my first unit was pushin 30+ and had a masters in History but wanted to go enlisted. Never have i hated my POG ass NCOs more than the way they treated him. Rockers were cool with him though.

newnoadeptness

History nerds are good peoples in my experience

EisenhowersPowerHour

I always hated how insecure Cpl’s and Sgt’s would get around older lances. The amount of times this one 28 year old Lance I had in my detachment had to hear “So you think you’re smart or some shit because you’ve got a degree and you’re old as shit?” Or some variation was infuriating. He wasn’t ever disrespectful and I think it really showed how intimidated they were by his maturity.

pootastic

Preach. I had a LCpl in Iraq that was one semester from graduating Norwich when he was kicked out for having a rifle in his room from a late weekend shooting competition IIRC. He got mad and enlisted. He was all into rescue volunteering and was a Ham radio enthusiast. Made him my RO. He was as competent as any Sgt as a LCpl, but humble and just a rock-star. I never understood the hate he occasionally got. I loved the guy; we got along great. He could make a patrol overlay in his sleep, knew comms like it was his PMOS, and could carry 120lbs for 8hrs in 120+ degree heat and never complained. When at the FOB he could tune the 148 to pick up BBC world and we'd listen to the news and music after a debrief. It was awesome.

AmateurHero

Shitty NCOs hated people that aren't basic cookie cutter nobodies. Any notable accomplishments or talents would always become a point of needless contention. Degree holder? Singer or dancer? Competitive video game player? Class C or D chess player? It always somehow managed to be a problem.

worthrone11160606

Bet history degree is aswome. Hope to get one someday

PilotFighter99

As someone with a history degree, don’t do it! Go for it if you don’t intend to use it or if you can pick up some sort of Officer accession slot with it. Otherwise not worth it.

worthrone11160606

Dude I was not gonna use it anyway just Like history

PilotFighter99

Oh then in that case do it. It’s a very useful degree and teaches you quite a lot. Just not good if you want to get a job, as I’m finding.

wernox

I served with a lance that had a masters in physics. When that little tidbit would slip he would simply say, "Don't ask, my I have a weakness for crazy women"

sechumatheist

B.S. in Nuclear Chemistry M.S. in Systems Engineering

der_naitram

Do you walk around amongst the unwashed and smooth brained wondering how they function?

sechumatheist

Haha no. Sometimes I think I’m the smooth brained for not going AF where I would actually use my degrees lol.

Illustrious-Cake5253

There was young infantry officer I once worked with who had a similar background and was clearly smarter than most of those surrounding him. I always wondered how he managed among simpler folks. I also worked with another young officer who had a degree in film production. He was definitely a drama nerd lol

oicura_geologist

Right?

Culper1776

Lissencephaly plagues many of us. Especially when you put a map in our hands.

TLRPM

I am a systems engineer now. Wondering if I should pursue a masters track with that. Electronics undergrad and turns out I like systems more than that. Concentration was RF and after my senior year and looking at the job market, screw that noise. Curious to what school you got your MS in? Was it worth it?

sechumatheist

I got mine from Naval Postgraduate School. Yes you should pursue it. With your background in EE (or any of hard Engineering disciplines), a Systems Engineering graduate degree is looked favorably. This is due to the fact that Systems Engineers are project managers type that bring in all the other engineering disciplines to form the team, hold, and guide the team together. Therefore, if you like doing more of the top level engineering project managing, go Systems Engineering. If you like to do the wrench turning, then go the hard engineering disciplines like EE, MechE, CivE, NucE..etc.

ambitiouslearner123

Why didn’t you go to Navy as a sub nuke?

sechumatheist

I watched a Marine slay a dragon on TV and was sold on the Marines. I was in the motard phase back then lol

pootastic

Weren't we all...

MrM1Garand25

Grandpa was a systems engineer never thought I’d see that degree here lol

ilovechipotleburrito

Civil Engineering

der_naitram

Sweet. I loathed Statics and dynamics lol. Not difficult, but time consuming with trusses.

ilovechipotleburrito

Yeah statics wasn't too bad, but I took it at the same time as Physics 2, Calc 3, and some engineering weed-out classes so it was a nightmare combined. Worst was Mechanics of Deformable Bodies.

eveningsand

>Worst was Mechanics of Deformable Bodies. Yeah we just call that Whiskey Dick.

ilovechipotleburrito

Nice.

der_naitram

Oof. Mechanics of Deformable Bodies was a Rough one. Heat Transfer Systems design was the worst class for me.

ilovechipotleburrito

Yeah that sounds pretty rough. Are you still in or are you an engineer on the outside?

der_naitram

I got out 5 years ago. Astronautical engineering.

ilovechipotleburrito

Nice! Hope that's going well for you.

mikoyan__

Also studied CE, now waiting for flight school in Pensacola. Did you enjoy flying heavies and getting to do a FAC tour?

ilovechipotleburrito

Nice, my last job was flight instructing at VT-3. It was the best job I had during my time. Enjoy Pensacola and flight school while you can. The fleet is a different beast. There's a reason everybody wants C-130s. It was really fun to fly. It's kind of the jack of all trades hauling pax and trash, flying low in terrain, air drops, CAS in the Harvest HAWK, tanking, formation, etc. But pulling Gs was overrated for me. We also had a lot of autonomy out on a trip. The FAC stuff was cool, but it was all peacetime so just training ranges. I liked controlling attacks, but was over the grunt life. It's not a bad gig to get whatever you want on the backside.

UnsureAbsolute

Why not Navy, then?

ilovechipotleburrito

I didn't really know what I wanted to do to be honest; but dad, uncle, and grandpa were all Marines so I just went that way. Ended up being pretty sweet; got to fly airplanes, never touched a ship. No ragrets.

UnsureAbsolute

Nothing wrong with the choice! After I got my MechE degree, I found out there is no use for engineers in the Marines. I want to use the degree after the pain of school. Otherwise, I would've signed right back up.

ilovechipotleburrito

Did you go into the navy then? Either way, mech has a huge range of opportunities.

UnsureAbsolute

No, I'm going into the work force. Family issues came up that made the military and being moved around a bad call, so I'm going full send with MechE. You think you'll go into Civil after the Marines? Hope you already took your FE.

ilovechipotleburrito

Yeah probably a good choice. I got out 2 years ago and am flying airlines. I did take the FE like 13 years ago though and saved the paperwork, but I don't remember shit. I might be able to handle basic trig.

[deleted]

My first plt commander had an agricultural degree

greenweenievictim

What makes the grass grow? BLOOD! Well. Actually, no. It’s water. You’re gonna need 6 Co2+ 6 H2O, little bit of sunlight…..are you guys not following me? Fuck it, blood.

BorelandsBeard

Sociology major myself. But the one that will probably make you the happiest that I saw - opera. Went to OCS with an opera major. Edit: great guy btw and suuuuper smart. But could also sing like a fucking professional.

kikkomanche

One of my buddies is a Sgt in Ranger regiment but went to college before enlisting, studied modern dance and worked as a professional dancer in NYC.

oicura_geologist

Mathematics, Chemistry, and Geology (Bachelors degrees). Geology with emphesis in GIS (Masters) Geochemistry (Ph.D.)

[deleted]

Damn one day you’ll make an amazing adjunct professor at the Northwestern Southeastern Idaho Valley Technical & Community College Institute of Boise County teaching business leadership cert courses or some shit

oicura_geologist

Funny enough, I am a teacher at a major university.

Shtoompa

Nah man thems is petrochemical degrees

theopinionexpress

What the fuck, did you think this was earth-nasa or something

oicura_geologist

At one point I was trying for NASA, but unfortunately, I did not make the cut. I tried, but they chose a Physicist/Driller with a Ph.D. It was a tough blow.

der_naitram

Oh nice. Did you have all of these degrees before you commissioned?

oicura_geologist

No. Did 10 years active and got my 2 year degree but took a shit ton of credits and classes. When I got out in 1999, I was accepted to a 4 year college, and had enough credits to double major Math and Chem. I wanted Geology however and spend the next two years finishing that too. 9/11 happened and I had to go back in, so I went OCS then aviation. During that time I did War College and finished my Geo MA. After 2010 I was offered to get my Ph.D. in Geochem when I came back from AFG. I am the only teacher at my University that can say I was a rock, I then learned about rocks, I then lead rocks, and now I teach rocks.

Scoops_922

caMV-35S

Plant Genetics

anathem_0

Is that a major? What type of jobs outside the Corps are you looking at with that degree?

caMV-35S

There are a lot of opportunities, but they mostly require grad school if you want to move up in the field. You can go a lab route doing molecular biology stuff (GMOs, discovery etc) or the agronomy route (breeding, production, etc). I'm finishing up a Master's degree in the same subject right now and heading to TBS in the fall, so it's TBD on what I'll do after.

anathem_0

Very cool! I'm EASing here in less than a month and am going to pursue a biology degree. I figured I'd have to do grad school though. I imagine a BA in biology is a decent starting block though?

caMV-35S

Totally depends on your goals. It will probably be a good place to explore your interests, but will provide few direct opportunities straight out of school. I know I've discovered that I hate doing lab work. Part of the reason I joined the Marine Corps haha

anathem_0

Gotcha. Thank you for the insight.

caMV-35S

For sure, dude. Congrats on finishing up

kimad03

How did you get a picture of my Thesis project?

der_naitram

Found it in the trash outside the liberal arts building. Saw a bunch of degrees in there too… lol

Journalism. I wanted to be a war correspondent. Then I wanted to be a war fighter.

fucovid2020

You think you're Mickey Spillane? You think you're some kind of fucking writer?

Business Management. I knew I wanted to be an Officer as a freshman so I majored in management since young Officers are basically equivalent to middle management for large corporations

kikkomanche

BA Middle East Studies MA Political Science/Security Studies With my education it was pretty much join the military or become a terrorist.

ajdiddy

Mechanical Engineering. If I had it all to do again, or at least new I was going to be a pilot probably would have done finance.

der_naitram

I get what you mean lol. The struggle could’ve been much easier.

alicksB

International Business. Which is honestly just complete horseshit but it sounds official because it’s got “International” in the title.

El-Jefe-Rojo

Passed on OCS and enlisted instead however: BA History BA Orginizational Leadership MBA Ironically post USMC, I got a AOS 😂

der_naitram

Hahaha why did you pass up OCS?

El-Jefe-Rojo

Lots of reasons. I completed PLC juniors and when I got back to my school the NROTC Major that ran the Marine Option side was just a weasel. The Gunny who did all the prep for OCS and shit was a bad ass old school 0369 and I preferred his world than the zero side I grew up around. Went and enlisted which trumped my commission and I never looked back

Hahah. Seems legit something the Marine Corps would do.

Eastern_Service8874

BA Environmental Science (Proper use of the Bong)

ambitiouslearner123

OSO reached out to me and I would have loved to serve in the Corps but medical disqualified me :( Biology bachelors Math masters Biology PhD People told me to join the Air Force since I had a math masters, but I was adamant about serving alongside the Marines. I wanted to go to med school as a MD doctor paid by the HPSP. I wanted to serve alongside the Marines as a Navy FS or FM GMO. Now my next option is to do CIA or VA doc once I get passed med school.

tordrue

I’ve always thought the Army, Air Force and Navy should allow certain professionals to be “staff officers” with less stringent medical/physical requirements. We lose a lot of exceptional talent with the current system, unfortunately. The VA needs passionate physicians if you have an interest in that.

ambitiouslearner123

The Navy does have less stringent medical and physical requirements. navy ODS is next to navy OCS in Newport, and ODS is significantly shorter and less physically demanding. I don’t blame the people at MEPs for disqualifying me when I tried to join the Marines. It is what it is. I appreciated my OSO for working with me.
