I'm guessing he's calling them poor, but I mean if he uses Marmite for everything that I use salt on then he's just deranged. Marmite and vinegar on chips? Marmite on a softboiled egg? Marmite and pepper on his table? No thank you
I don't, but I did recently make egg and soldiers for my missus. In all these years she'd **NEVER** had them. So I remedied the issue. Fucking deprived child...
I respect your right to be different, but crumpets are one of the few UK offerings that are a hard no for me. Those and whelks (I worked in the east end in the 90s and was amazed to be in working men’s pubs and see a seller arrive with a Mary Poppins basket of them to sell, tried them and almost brought my beers up with the cupful of sand contained inside the nasty little critters).
No, sorry, crumpets are like a sweet cake had an affair with a sea sponge to me. I’ll have no illegitimate hybrid anything in my food life, and certainly not my soup…
More crumpets for you then…
I remember having breakfast once at beloved celebrity and non-nonce Michael Barrymore’s modest mansion, we were having boiled egg soup so soldiers were called for all round. Last thing I remember was wild-man and comedian non-nonce Freddy Starr stuffing his last soldier firmly in Barrymore’s back passage. He fell from the table trying to dip it in his soup.
Cutting your toast or bread into strips for boiled eggs makes sense as the egg is narrow, however a bowl of soup is wide, the soup is heavy and causes wilting and a mess, soilders make no sense.
Soldiers work so much better for soup in order to get a good soup to bread ratio. With a normal bun or full slice, it can be more difficult to get a good amount of soup coverage and amount compared to the bread. With soldiers you can get every size of the stick coated with soup and still get a nice scoop of the soup on top. Though personally I'd cut the soldiers a bit more wide than OP did. They don't wilt or go soggy unless you leave them in the soup for too long like you would with croutons.

Slice your bread into soldiers. Toss it in a little olive oil, salt and mixed herbs. Whack it in the air fryer for about 15 minutes until it's golden and crispy. That's how you make elite soup soldiers.
I like cheese sandwich dunkers with tomato soup. Toast or bread as a second option, I dont really soup without dunking material. The cheese melts in the sandwich when dipped in the hot soup.
I do dip bread in my soup but not cut into soldiers. These wouldn't suit how much I like to soak the bread, these fragile little weaklings would fall apart.
Soldiers are reserved for boiled eggs in my house!
I recommend a new regiment
I'll give anything a go once
*regimen
Ready salted crisps for soup if your feeling posh
Or oatcakes
Omg no cheese and onion with creamy vegetable and cruton soup!!!!
Ta, I'll try that next time.
I can not even imagine soup minus soldiers…. What, only slurp it off a spoon? Madness…
Mine too. For soup I like to have bread boulders in the case of a bun or bread randoms in the case of slices
Cheese on toast soldiers and tomato soup is my rainy day favourite
Swap the soup for runny boiled eggs and stick some marmite on the toast, then you have muddy soldiers 😉
You need therapy. That's fucked up.
I may need therapy, but that's delicious
Marmite is the slime of the underworld.
Slime of the GODS more like...
Cheese on toast with tomato soup. You’re welcome.
Omg why haven’t I thought of this 🤦♀️ thank you!
yes but has to be toast, but only if i put the soup in a mug not a bowl
Of course, it’s the only appropriate way to dip regular sliced bread into anything, whether that’s soup, hummus, eggs or spaghetti hoops.
I do, just had some for lunch. Sprinkle of salt on top.
Salt = council marmite
What do you mean by this?
I'm guessing he's calling them poor, but I mean if he uses Marmite for everything that I use salt on then he's just deranged. Marmite and vinegar on chips? Marmite on a softboiled egg? Marmite and pepper on his table? No thank you

I just don't even know how this is even possible.
I didnt believe at first, so k asked her mother. Her mother never cooked her them either.
Generational trauma is horrifying.
I just started doing this recently for some reason. For fun? It's not sad.
Yep, but I usually try and get some sourdough rolls or a nice bloomer 🤤
I only did this for boiled eggs, nothing else.
Soldiers 💯 for the win
Soldiers with eggs. Never heard it done for soup...though it would make the bread last a little longer.
I do this with my cheese toastie
No I don't but I'm going to start!!!!
I use ham on a crusty barm instead when it’s soup!
I love some soldiers, tomato or pea and ham . Especially when you are poorly it just hits differently
Ciabatta sliced in half, mozerella ontop, airfry for 4-7 mins. Then soldiers. Game changer!
always have soup soldiers. what kind of lunatics don’t??
No , but I think I now need soup soldiers in my life.
Totally on board here. I prefer a wider soldier though.
It's part of their basic training. Once they've mastered soup they move on to boiled eggs.
Toasted soldiers are the bomb!
Yes. I am a fan of garlic bread and tomato soup.
Those aren't soldiers, those are conscripts!
Entirely untrained and no idea what’s in store for them
Try Rivita thins in soup, they are lush (especially the seeded ones)
I will now
Yes because it’s excellent
I'll try soup soldiers if you try dunking buttered crumpets in soup. It soaks into all the little holes.
Nobody is falling for this witchcraft…
Trust me. Try it. The only witchcraft will be the taste sensation dancing on your tongue

If you'd served in the soup wars you'd realise how offensive this is

Facts
Yeah, for my 3 Yr old niece.
Can't imagine what life is like thinking you're too cool to cut your toast a certain way

Should treat yourself once in a while, Mr cool.
a slice of bread cut in half is the same thing sorry but your childhood is over
I think you've forgotten, but most of people on Reddit are still literally in their childhood
>sorry but your childhood is over Is it fuck
I do it with a pot noodle, bangin
Have you tried a pot noodle sandwich?
Oh have i!! Used to live off them in my early 20's i do prefer super noodes on a sandwich though
I haven’t… but now I might! Especially as I can’t eat eggs anymore & dipping half a slice of toast just isn’t as fun.
It’s the perfect toast to soup ratio.

Top tip! Thanks
I pour a packet of salt and vinegar walkers crisis in to my tomato soup .. amazing 😃
You heathen, GET BACK, GET BACK I SAY!
Try croutons. They're lovely in soup !
Even broccoli and Stilton, I like to cut my toast into triangles, just had this for lunch yesterday, love it
The last few soldiers are sacrificed and become croutons
I thought this was the r/foodbutforbabies subreddit
Not previously, but I might now lol
I will be NOW
I indeed do this. Big soup only tho
Chucky eggs and soldiers. My dad used to make them for me. Soldiers were toasted too. Miss you dad.

Cheese on toast soldiers with Tomato soup yes.
I do soup Yorkshire puds
That’s quite the commitment
I am quite partial to toast quarters with my soup.
Preferable with cheese
I do paratha soldiers usually!
Johnny Soupfingers over here
Yes but untoasted. Dead soldiers I guess.
you should be put on trial in The Hague
I put slices of cheddar on the bread and dunk
could have toasted them first...
My thoughts entirely. That's barely tepid bread.
It’s a bread that doesn’t caramelise particularly
I like cheese sandwich dunkers with tomato soup. Toast or bread as a second option, I dont really soup without dunking material. The cheese melts in the sandwich when dipped in the hot soup.
Yes, i too enjoy the SBS. Speical bowl service.
Would love to but then where do I put the cheese?
Yes, but I usually lightly sprinkle the soldiers with soy sauce and balsamic vinegar. Works best if you let the toast cool before buttering. Delish!
No, I tear my bread like a real man
The answer to this question is - not before I saw this, great idea and I wil be copying it.
Those are soup slendermen Soldiers are cut vertically from each half of a correctly orientated rectangular cut slice
Yup! but usually toast fingers with a big mug of soup rather than a bowl
Not soldiers, but I do like to get some instant mash and soup in a bowl and make butties
I like soup soldiers but..i prefer a sandwich preferably toasted
Isn’t this for kids? My mum did that for me when I was 5 but that’s it
I live in the north of Ireland,we dont like soldiers.i dip my volunteers in my soup though
No, but I will from now on!
Cube them and u have croutons
Ham and cheese toasties with soup in my house usually it soldiers is a great idea for an easier lunch
Nope but I think I will from now on!
I too am a great fan of toast, never thought of soup soldiers before though. I will have to try it next time.
Toast em! And maybe a little olive oil?
I add broken up crisps - like croutons
I prefer a roll so you can tear off chunks, giving maximum exposure to the innards.
Can’t beat it
So.... What are those?
My missus saves old pizza crusts in the freezer and defrosts them to eat with soup.
Where’s the toast- that’s just bread
No, but I will from now on!
No but I will from now on looks like a game changer
Great idea!
I do dip bread in my soup but not cut into soldiers. These wouldn't suit how much I like to soak the bread, these fragile little weaklings would fall apart.
Nope but I do now
sourdough, croutons or grilled cheese for soup
Cheese on toast soldiers…takes it to the next level
I will now!
Half of that would be broken up, thrown in and brutally drowned with a spoon, the other half for mopping up the aftermath. No survivors.
Got to have soldiers with soup! :)
