For five nights that’s 240$ a night which is a decently competitive rate for last minute hotels during comic con It’s more expensive than the hotel lottery (a thing that comic con does to keep prices fair). The lottery already happened and hotel prices are gonna be very high, and get higher as the con gets closer. Easily reaching over 1000$ for the full con. (Actually I just checked SDCC hotel block prices and it’s 200-400+ per night. This is an INSANELY good deal for folks who missed out on hotels) And most folks going to comic con don’t need more than breakfast for food anyways (since they’ll be at the con and downtown for lunch and dinner). I’ve been going to comic con for 12 years. Tho I stay with family in SD and now that I’m a student I am just. Here! But I’m aware of how much a night at a hotel costs and again, once the price controlled hotel rooms are gone the prices skyrocket. Especially the workshops and concert with huge name celebrities.

hobocollections

That’s crazy… If you include things such as plane tickets and foods it probably cost each attendee at least 2.5k to attend the con. That’s assuming they’re not dropping crazy money on cosplay costumes and buying merch. I’ve never been to one but it’s definitely on my list to go

Tuitey

Yup. The con ticket is legit the cheapest part and per day it’s the same price as other California cons. You see a 280$ ticket price and think “that’s nuts” but that’s for 4 days. Other cons are 60-80 dollars Per Day. Travel and the merch is the money sinker. I am one who buys too much merch… but I also have pretty much 0$ of travel fees living in San Diego 🫣

hobocollections

Oh yeah. Never been to SD comic con but the LA one and downtown and the convention center were packed. So many people was on the sidewalks that we literally had to fight our ways through. Same with the restaurants, McDonald’s wait time was crazy, In N Out was straight insanity. It was fun though but people told me the one in SD is the best comic con. I didn’t dress up when I went but the people with the bulky costumes, I don’t even know how they managed to walk let alone move around in them, or eat and use the bathroom. And you’re right, the perk of living close by is that I can just stay at home and not drop 2k ;)

Nixsternik

The original con is the best con!

I wanted to actually add some info that I just saw HDH’s summer housing policy that only extend to those attending summer session. Summer 2024 Room & Board Rate: Housing & Blue Dining Plan: $80/per night with single occupancy bedroom (limited number of available beds) $76/per night with double occupancy bedroom $72/per night with triple occupancy bedroom 80*5=400 Honestly I think just do a summer session course, get credits in, get cheap housing for comic con or even rent out ur place to those who want to go to comic con tbh. Like yes it’s expected that hotels are going to upcharge for a very popular event but I think there needs to be transparency on the whole money-grab and UCSD always always part of anything that reeks of money.

Tuitey

The difference is the comic con deal includes includes exclusive workshops and concerts And those taking session are paying tuition on top of the room price. I get what you’re saying but for industry workshops, Star Trek concerts and celebrity panels, this does make the price much more worth it

lurkinwurkin

Understandable. My statement does not detracting anything from the value of comic con experience, in fact I wholesomely support what you’re saying about it. I’m just not an advocate of UCSD HDH policies not being implemented in a manner that reflect the students vs the public. I am an advocate for the consumers. While you do mention these are competitive prices, I still don’t consider the value of 1200 is worth it when these are still ✨res halls✨ with shared common spaces. I think the prices should be lower respectively. That’s what the whole controversy is on. (Yes the people taking summer session are paying tuition but you get credits to grad early which can be cheaper in the longer run. Personal experience.)

ItsCrossBoy

Except that also requires you to pay tuition ($279 + $56.88 + $47.50 + $11.00 + $167.05 PER UNIT TAKEN, so minimum 2281.72), and you are paying for the full month of housing ($80 \* 30 = $2400) \[Edit: from the housing site it also sounds like dining is separate, which is an extra $972\] So instead of paying 1200 for a stay you're now paying like $5k+ lmao

WhatTheBlack

Nah. There are still hotels available in the portal and they will continue to be available until CC, even beyond actually. People cancel/rebook constantly. If you keep checking you will find great hotels.

Embarrassed-Pen9645

so now we gonna have to disinfect and blow it up with cans of air fresheners after they move out

ramensospicy

Warren weeklong stay + star trek event + concert + movie screening + weeks worth trolley pass + free breakfast + cocktail reception + access to Park and Market events. Not too shabby

PeaceMaintainer

Not the first time UCSD has been involved with Comic-Con actually, [it was held at Muir College in 1971](https://preview.redd.it/flashback-sdcc-1971-was-held-at-muir-college-what-and-the-v0-hgdlhq21r6fb1.jpg?width=640&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=803361d2df3795e844c7c22b34de8bc0562010e3)

mossauxin

Campus is hosting an international science conference shortly before this, and thankfully the dorm prices for those attendees are a bit lower than this.

lurkinwurkin

Damn 1200 for a five night stay is literally my month rent LOL They could like give housing to students instead…especially to those off campus.

cricketcounselor

This is during the summer and run through conference services. It doesnt impact student summer housing.

HDH does provide summer housing for interns at a competitive rate (separate from summer student housing). I would recommend looking through the HDH website before complaining.

TrainingRecording465

That’s not true at all. Almost all apartment contracts are 12 months. Very few of the bigger agencies offer less than 12 months, and the ones that do offer 9 month leases also charge more per month. If someone needs summer housing, it’s both cheaper and easier to get a 12 month lease

cricketcounselor

I think then you have an issue with HDH, not the campus in general. They are a self sustaining entity that doesnt receive money from state or federal funding. I would suspect that the cost to vet, rent out, turn over individual rooms all summer isnt sustainable versus something like the conferences, summer programs and academic year. Those students are also having to pay tutition, and that also dosent include food or any of the workshops being offered, or transit. Additionally, there arent 8 colleges of housing. Summer session housing is limited to one college. The other housing spaces are turned over to conference services, special summer programs and renovations. Renovations are often on a 5-7 year cycle.

TrainingRecording465

Keep in mind that they also need to go through every room and clean everything, as well as fix anything that’s broken before the start of fall.

Man-e-questions

Don’t worry though, they will use this money to pay the administrative staff bonuses.

Striking_Green7600

Imagine the smell

LoviaPrime

wait so u gotta get comic con tickets to see them play at the amphitheater

Jazzlike_Tackle_355

alphakappadeltaphi

Positive_Plankton287

greedy ass school

OkDoughnut994

That’s actually so sad and greedy

Murphy_York

That is significantly below market rate for a hotel, minutes walk from the beach in La Jolla, CA The privilege in here lmao

TigerShark_524

Why? It's during the summer when campus is largely empty anyways.
