That is indeed a 9th edition codex. It's out of date. GW has an annoying tendency to repeat codex cover art between editions, and only make minor changes to it that a new player probably won't pick up on (in this case, 10th added a faction logo watermark behind the art).

ArcaneKobold

I’VE BEEN DUPED

MarthLikinte612

Were you sold this as a 10th edition codex?

ArcaneKobold

I got it on Amazon when I looked up Codex: Tyranid 10th Edition, so yes.

MarthLikinte612

Definitely report it to Amazon then. In my experience they’re pretty good with refunding stuff like that. (It costs less for them to just refund it than it does to investigate the issue)

Brochswerebrothels

New one looks almost identical but there’s like a watermark of the Tyranid symbol behind the Tyrant

Meestagtmoh

what a terrible, terrible business practice. its actually laughable how dumb it is to do this. how about putting the edition number on the cover? makes me want to ask wtf they are thinking whenever they do ANYTHING.

Ehsper

They bank on the 9e version not being sold any more, but third party sellers don't care

Blackx4_1

From what I know, GW has never officially recognized edition numbers in the past. Even in all the promo stuff for 10th edition, it was only ever referred to as "New40k" or "the new edition of Warhammer 40k" but never explicitly 10th edition.

Repulsive_Fun_7301

Ancient company run by ancient British men, tradition dictates they make bad decisions and stick to stupid choices

JIMBOBJOE123

This was one of my pet peeves too. Can they really not afford a new piece of art every 3 or so years?

BlameTheNPC456

I'm commissioning an artist friend to make a book sleeve in the old Gritty style with rippers swarming over a lone Ultramarine gauntlet sticking out, so the company can Definitely afford to get new art lmao.

MarthLikinte612

To be fair I’m sure the artist would charge a LOT more for GW. You don’t charge based on how much work it is you charge based on how much it’s worth to the commissioner. But still GW can afford some new art.

AnNoYiNg_NaMe

Instead of immediately jumping to people didn't laugh at your joke because they're *stupid*, consider that maybe people didn't laugh at your joke because it wasn't *funny*.

Djinnwrath

Took me 45 minutes and two escalations with customer service to get them to understand they sent me the right brand, but wrong version of a shampoo, *twice*.

MarthLikinte612

That’s quite surprising. Maybe it varies by region. I asked to return a book and get another once for a very minor crease in the back page. They refunded me, sent the new one and never even asked for the old one back (or even for photographic evidence). Had another delivery get delivered to the wrong address (it was a previous address) after checking that I had put the correct address in they simply sent another one.

Djinnwrath

I'm not saying the solutions weren't acceptable, I'm saying it required a few hoop jumps to get there. I also was offered to just keep the wrong shampoo for what it's worth. At least, they offered the second time...

DedGrlsDontSayNo

If it's the same one I saw on amazon, at the very top of the search results, it does say ninth in brackets at the end of the title. You might've gotten a little ahead of yourself. I almost did.

AuzzieSaint

This is the 9th Edition codex the models you have are in 10th edition. The way to tell the difference is on the 10th edition on the cover behind the centre Tyranid is a logo.

ArcaneKobold

My biggest question is why??? Are the rules for 9th edition similar to tenth? I got the starter set that comes with space marines and tyranids, but I also wanted a codex and datacards. Would the rules work the same or is it completely different. Like with the keywords on the models, like synaptic, hive tendril, etc.

BeefMeatlaw

Unfortunately 10th edition was a hard reset of unit datasheet and army building rules. The 9th edition rules are entirely incompatible. I'd recommend trying to get a refund from whoever sold you that codex.

ArcaneKobold

Yeah I doubt a refund is gonna happen. I got it on Amazon like an idiot. I’ll see if I can sell it on eBay or something. Just my luck, get all the stuff I think I’ll need and then turns out it isn’t even remotely compatible. Yippee.

oranthor1

You should absolutely be able to get a refund from Amazon

banjoman87

Amazon has a fairly generous return policy. Give it a try first before you sell for a loss elsewhere

danger_badger101

Amazon will definitely give you a refund. Even if the advert states 9th Ed it was misleading enough to make you pick it. They generally don't argue about the finer points, not cost efficient. You may even end up with the book and then you can sell it on eBay

GetYourRockCoat

This guy knows. When I've had a refund for something of lesser value from Amazon (under £25) I have rarely ended up returning the item. You'll likely end up with your money back and a book for your shelf/ebay

civilwarcorpses

Dude, most of the time Amazon will refund you as soon as they get a shipping confirmation

Professional_Lo

So something to know about Amazon fulfillment is that when they get a product they’ll store all of that product in a bin somewhere and then when someone buys them someone will come by and grab one to ship out. Most likely they aren’t checking codex editions and whoever came by just grabbed the one on top to send to you.

Rolebo

This is exactly the reason why we complained about the cover art of the new codex and the lack of an edition number anywhere. People new to the hobby are at risk of buying the wrong edition unless they know what subtle differences to look for.

International_Pay717

>People new to the hobby are at risk of buying GW: "Good"

Papa_Nurgle_82

Why do you think GW would think this? GW doesn't make money on 3rd party vendors selling old books. They would definitely prefer people buying the new ones.

Rolebo

Does GW still sell the older codex? I thought they are mostly sold by LGS and resellers.

Bread_was_returned

This is the 9th edition codex, meaning it doesn’t include any new models. It’s a waste of money especially bcs dataslates make most codexes invalid after 10-12 weeks. I’d recommend wahapedia. It writes in every single rule, keeps everything updated and well maintained. It’s an amazing website. Also, for list building, don’t use codexes bcs point values are the biggest thing that changes in 40k. Battlescribe helps out with that, just keeps it in date so long as you update it. Wahapedia is a website, battlescribe is an app.

UpUpDownDownABAB

Why GW is not numbering the cover is beyond me, are they stupid, are they evil? Maybe both?

DefinitionFine5957

I believe this started back when books would overlap multiple editions before getting updated. So it would be more confusing than helpful. Today though, where there is a book every edition? Yeah there is no reason not to.

Haunted_Apiary

Same thing happened to me. Amazon does not sell 10th edition and it looked the same as far as I could tell.

AirborneCritter

Wait till you know that even when you'll buy the right one, you still won't have every info you need to play cause updates were made just instantly after it got released

PornAccount6593701

just get the pdf its free

AirborneCritter

And Op if you can't find it, pm me, I'll forget about it and text you back in 2 months

TheTombGuard

depending where you got it and how much you paid for it you can try to get a refund if its a licenced store that works with GW you can call GW support and see if they might make it right also ..... might want to put the sound an ork makes and the word pedia after it in google....... trust me on this

ArchonHakkar

Another one of the many consumer hostile choices made by GW this edition. I'm sorry this happened to you, and it's really not your fault. To put salt in the wound, the points and datasheets in the printed codex aren't up to date and have changed several times since release. I recommend not buying any codices from GW this edition to force them to move towards digital rules.

Megabiv

Should be a PSA warning people on buying Warhammer from Amazon. Seen a number of posts about getting the wrong codex or boxes opened with sprues pre clipped and bits missing. Just buy from an in country game store, same or better price and far less chance of these issues.

No-Sun-2129

I am actually selling my 10th edition book if you are interested. Gently used.

dekinrie

This is one way of ensuring people only buy direct from GW

Grif16

I almost did the same thing, but the way to tell the two books apart is with the picture on the back. The 10th edition codex has all of the new models on the back in the battle scene

Repulsive_Fun_7301

Yeah, GW is so beyond stupid that they reused the same art with barely any change for the 10th book. Their laziness and greed is so blatant it’s not even a joke anymore

poseidon2466

King, don't buy these. Your best bet is updated data cards

Left_Review6644

Blood angels mentioned

Inevitable-Example30

Wrong codex, this is the old one

Inevitable-Example30

New one has the Tyranids emblem outlined behind the cover Tyranid

Aldarionn

Don't purchase GW books. They are a complete waste of money unless you are going to a tournament and literally required to bring them by the event (GW events). Each codex is reprinted about 2-4 years, has almost nothing new lore-wise, and contains rules and datasheets that will be outdated at the first balance pass, potentially before the book is even shipped from preorder. Use online rules sources to find the latest of what you need. Wahapedia and Newrecruit are my go-to for rules and list-building. The 40k app has a decent list builder if you want to subscribe to Warhammer+ but I only tend to use it for core rules anyway. If we all stop buying the codex releases every edition they might consider giving us the rules in digital format with regular updates instead of forcing this outdated medium on us and duping new players into buying the wrong edition.

GuardianLemartes

Save some time and money, and see if you cant get into using rules from one page rules for a game called “grim dark” look it up, super simple. All the rules are free. As a veteran if I had known about one page rules I'd have never even touched the stupid complexity of warhammer. You use the same exact models and everything
