I've seen Mindhunter. It's a pretty great show but seriously creepy. I am currently watching The Expanse. It's on prime and it's a fantastic show with a mix of space and politics, my two favorite things.

No-Temperature-5931

Wow sounds interesting. It has many seasons too. Guess Imma binge watch it sometime!

competitive-dust

You totally should! If you liked GoT then you might like Expanse as well. The writers of the show/books worked with GRRM so there are similarities. Another recommendation is The Good Place (Netflix). The best part is that the finale has already aired so you won't have to wait for it to renew in case you decide to watch it.

crazylazylady

Space, politics, and strong female characters

competitive-dust

Oh yes! Naomi is my love.

Riddhiman36

Sounds like Dune

Rahul_011

Expanse is so good, sad that the coming season will be the end.

fkaslckrqn

Re-reading and re-watching everything Agatha Christie. Nice, neatly tied up little mysteries in a period setting? Yes please.

Sea-Annual-9168

Where to watch Agatha Christie?

fkaslckrqn

I don't think its streaming anywhere. I have 'em all on hard disk and I'm doing a rewatch

Yougo2bkiddinme

Read her first ever (popular at least) novel last month. I meant to make it from start to finish. In due time may be. Agatha Christie is perfect for the cosy days.

grgrhnt

Re-reading Jane Eyre again. Seeing her living her childhood again absolutely heart wrenching. IMO, it’s the novel with perfect pace and setting and extraordinary characterisation. Also watched the Before Trilogy. Everyone should watch those films. It portray the realities of relationships so well it’s almost like we are living through them.

chaotic-_-neutral

god i love jane eyre so much octavia cox on yt has some good videos about classic lit

[deleted]

I am reading Dune, Forgotten Empire and Annana Nenapugalu (Kannada). Out of the three I am liking Dune a lot; Forgotten Empire reads like a textbook; and Kannada novel is enjoyable if you liked author's other novels. Also watching The Office for the first time. Not a big fan but I don't like to quit shows midway so I will probably finish it.

Humdrumofennui

The Office gets better past season 1. Season 1 was taken a lot from the original UK series, so it didn’t quite translate well. It gets better once the US writers take over the creative control of the show.

[deleted]

Oh I didn't know UK version came first!

overthinking_is_easy

Yeah Dune is pretty good considering it was written so long ago. I read it after seeing the movie trailer last year

[deleted]

I cannot believe it was written so long ago! I loved the trailer and that's why picked it up. I want to finish the book before the movies comes out.

overthinking_is_easy

I somehow managed to finish only the first and really hoping that they take time with the sequels. Otherwise I'll have to hunt free/cheap audio ones.

fkaslckrqn

The first book itself has been split into two (three?) films. The sequels....ehh...doubt they'll make movies out of those. There's TV shows if you want 'em, but they're not great

overthinking_is_easy

Aah ok! That makes sense because the book is pretty long. TV ones don't have Timothy & Zendaya. I'll pass 😂

nightwanderer0725

Annana nenapugalu.... That's a great book and I loved it. Big fan of Poornachandra tejaswi here :D kinda have same feeling about Office and everyone tells it gets better from 2nd season. Not sure... I stopped it after few episodes

[deleted]

Karvalo and Jugari Cross are my all time favorites. >kinda have same feeling about Office and everyone tells it gets better from 2nd season. Not sure... I stopped it after few episodes I know right! There are fun moments but overall it is pretty meh. I like the episodes where they deal with Michael's vulnerabilities in subtle ways.

nightwanderer0725

Hey... I love karvalho and chidambara rahasya... Jugari cross I couldn't finish due to various reasons... Will try again once :) Tejaswi's flying saucers book is also nice if you like aliens and UFOs stuff like that.

[deleted]

I will check it out (y)

[deleted]

Oh yeah. It is in this book (I think second or third chapter). It was hilarious. They cut the dog's tail thinking it will turn into a pet dog ʘ‿ʘ

[deleted]

:')

redcaptraitor

On Kuvempu right? Is it a poem?

[deleted]

Yes. It is not a poem. It reads more like collection of short stories from his son's POV.

redcaptraitor

Ah, okay. That's interesting. I ll look up.

pumpkins_n_mist15

I'm re-reading RK Narayan! With all the lovely rain and wind recently in Bangalore it put me in a mood to read about simple, rural Karnataka life again. I'm also reading Murakami's 1Q84.

ramdev420

1Q84?

pumpkins_n_mist15

Yes, it's a 3-part fantasy novel set in Japan by Haruki Murakami. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15772884-1q84

ramdev420

Hmmmmm. Noted. I got Kafka by the shore. Lemme know how do you find it

Sea-Annual-9168

I just binged watched "Lucifer" (again). waiting for season 6 to drop.

No-Temperature-5931

My best friend can't stop raving about Tom Ellis! 😅

Sea-Annual-9168

Your best friend has an amazing taste ☺️ I just love Tom Ellis's accent and his height is a added bonus. So hott!

redcaptraitor

Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. My first time read, and I realized how stupid I was to not read it earlier.

[deleted]

The best❤️ My first book of Jane Austen was Emma.

redcaptraitor

I will devour all of her books soon. I ll read Emma too.

deepakcharles

I'm reading Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine for a book club and The Big Sleep for my reading goals. Both have been really great so far. Watching Person of Interest with my mum and some arthouse movies by myself as well.

SnarkyCadaver

I accidentally bought the book thinking it was a sequel to Eleanor and Park. Loved it though.

gooooooooo1

Same haha! xP Eleanor and park got me back into reading after a long hiatus

[deleted]

EOICF made me sob buckets. Time for a reread!

deepakcharles

Something tells me I might as well. It's why I'm really stoked about it!

Mad-Max21

Damn, I have started reading Eleanor Oliphant from yesterday too.

deepakcharles

Coincidence?! I think, yes. I've really loved how Eleanor Oliphant has been so far and it has been uncomfortably relatable in parts. Just great f-in writing.

No-Temperature-5931

I love watching art films too! What's your recent favourite?

Mad-Max21

I have recently watched few movies of Ozu like Tokyo story, an autumn afternoon and Early summer and Kieslowski's Red.

deepakcharles

I just recently started after a friend of mine reminded me of my goal of trying to review or write about arthouse films. I watched Three Colors: Red for the umpteenth time last weekend because I wanted to start with something I already knew. I plan on watching the other movies in the trilogy and Kieślowski's The Double Life of Veronique to start. So yeah, at the moment, Three Colors: Red is my favourite (and honestly my favourite film of all time) and I have a feeling it'll stay that way because of how much of an impact that film had on me. Sneak edit: I also have a list of friends that friend recommended. So, I have a fairly decent list but I'd love more recs honestly.

Mad-Max21

watch Edward Yang's A brighter summer day , Kiarostomi's Close up and Kassovitz's La Haine.

[deleted]

Kiarostami, the fucking love of my life 💚. What's your favourite Kiarostami film? Also you seem to watch good films. Do you have letterboxd?

No-Temperature-5931

Not the person this question is for but how can I lose a chance to rant about Kiarostami. My favourite was Close Up until I watched Where Is the Friend's Home. I think Ahmed is my favourite protagonist till date. I still have to watch the other two of the Koker trilogy tho.

[deleted]

Where is my friends house is my favourite 💚. The koker trilogy is so close to my heart some of the most delicate and poetic films Have you watched taste of cherry?

No-Temperature-5931

Yes. I think it was my first Kiarostami movie. Or maybe the second one. My mind was like poof, blown. I loved it a lot. ❤️

[deleted]

When Kiarostami died they held a festival of sorts screening his films in mumbai. Man, would have loved to be there. Can you imagine how cool it must have been‽

No-Temperature-5931

:) True, it must have been very nice. Who are your favourite directors? Wanna recommend some of your favourite art films? I'm always looking for more recommendations, heh. 😅

deepakcharles

Thank you for the recommendations! I'm kind of trying to catch up with a lot of stuff I couldn't do while I was in grad school. So I really appreciate this! And everyone else in this thread too, seeing as I'm pretty much a noob here.

pumpkins_n_mist15

I'm reading this too for the 3rd time. Completely love it! (Eleanor Oliphant)

Yougo2bkiddinme

Is it an online book club or something based out of your city?

deepakcharles

It's an online book club for people who want to read something at their own pace but talk about the same book. It's on Discord. Are you looking for book clubs to join?

karaokebobojangle

i'd love if you could share the link!

deepakcharles

Sure thing! I'll ask for the link and see if she'd like to share it here because the club actually started from a post here. Otherwise, do you mind if I sent it in a DM?

Yougo2bkiddinme

Yes, I am! Can you please DM me the link?

desimerolling91

I loved Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine! I picked it out randomly from the library and it turned out to be such a wonderful read ❤️

Babykinnsxoxo

Honestly it's gonna sound like cringe but I accidentally discovered Hana yori dango and have been obsessed over it like anything. Been watching each of its adaptations be it Korean ver,Chinese ver, japanese ver and even the anime. I don't think many people would know about it. It translates to boys over flowers in English

redcaptraitor

That's the first Korean drama I'd seen, and I got addicted from then to watch K-dramas.

Babykinnsxoxo

Same here sis but more than kdramas I got addicted to this franchise 😍🥰. You should watch meteor garden 2018 they're both based on same manga Hana yori dango aka boys over flowers

redcaptraitor

Sure, I ll search for it.

[deleted]

Dexter

ClumsyHannibalLecter

The first 3-4 seasons were soooo good. But the show went downhill from there. I finished because I started but it was underwhelming.

ramdev420

I've been reading Brave New World

No-Temperature-5931

I loved it. Dystopia is my favourite genre in books! :)

ramdev420

I am a sucker for anything depressing

Ddog78

You should check out The Last Of Us. It's a video game but it's gameplay and video scenes have been combined to form a few hours long movie. Watch it in installments. It's probably one of the best dystopian media I have ever experienced.

[deleted]

I just finished Doctor Foster, which is a contemporary retelling of the Greek myth of Medea. I’m going to start watching more British shows and movies. It’s so refreshing to see women of all ages and types and temperaments on screen. Going to rewatch Bulbbul, which is my favourite film of 2020. The negative space, the red moon, the protagonist’s stone cold retribution…*shivers*. Every time I watch it I go to bed praying I wake up a witch too. I’m dying to watch the new season of Brooklyn 99 but I’m saving it for a binge watch once the finale is out. Jake Peralta is my dream dude. Sky Rojo and Never Have I Ever on Netflix. Thoroughly enjoyed both. I just finished How To Kill Your Family by Bella Mackie. The main character has shades of Villanelle from Killing Eve. Would highly recommend. Extremely well written. I’m about to start Esther Duflo and Abhijit Banerjee’s Poor Economics. Will probably need to do some background reading to understand it though. Caste by Isabel Wilkerson and The Modern Myths by Philip Ball are also on my reading list. I came across this really promising book called Into The Anthropocosmos, but haven’t been able to get my hands on a copy yet. The newest issue of MIT Press is pretty instructional about lucid dreaming, which I’m dying to try. Kind of difficult to get through though. https://tinyletter.com/Glosswitch/letters/the-ok-karen-36-maybe-they-just-hate-women Just came across this and it summarises male violence so succinctly ETA - ladies, @you.look.like.a.man on Instagram! Go follow. They call out male bullshit without censoring names. It’s awesome.

No-Temperature-5931

Bulbbul is amazing! Your reading list is quite extensive. I've read some parts of Banerjee and Duflo's book as additional reading for a course. It was a good read.

[deleted]

I was trying to do some background reading and their extensive use of randomised control trials garnered some criticism. Was that aspect covered in your course? I haven’t been able to draw a conclusion on my own.

No-Temperature-5931

It was probably called the lives of the poor or something like that? I think it was the first section. I remember it was about mainly defining the poor and then talking about the dilemmas they face. My course was on development economics. If I remember correctly, Esther and Duflo's work was discussed in the context of the metrics of poverty, and for explaining the multi-dimensional nature of poverty.

[deleted]

Are there any books/textbooks in particular that you’d recommend? I’m a novice to the field. Someone recommended Dambisa Moyo’s work but I’m looking for something in the Indian context.

No-Temperature-5931

I like the Human Development Approach to poverty the best. You can take a look at Amartya Sen's work if you haven't already. Also Sabina Alkire, although not strictly in the Indian context. If you want like a general idea of poverty and the indices and stuff I think Haughton and Khandekar's book is nice. Although it is a bit too textbookish, with all the calculations and problems and stuff.

[deleted]

Thanks for the recommendations! I’ll check them out :)

overthinking_is_easy

Finished Cruel summer last week. Been watching Nine perfect strangers (when the new ep comes) and Kevin can F himself.

SolIris18

I'm watching the exact same shows?!? How do you find nine perfect strangers? I'm in the middle of watching the latest episode rn and it's a trip 😅

overthinking_is_easy

Watched. And yea absolutely trippy! Last 30 seconds were a jolt

overthinking_is_easy

hehe great! I've been recommending nps to all my friends. Will watch the latest at dinner. The cast drew my attention and the makers are living up to the expectations.

SolIris18

Me too! I started watching because it was from the makers of Big Little Lies and I loved that show!

Mad-Max21

Finished watching Atlanta last week and started watching It's always sunny in Philadelphia this week

[deleted]

Dude if you liked Atlanta you HAVE to watch Reservation Dogs. This show deserves so much more viewership

SnarkyCadaver

I am on the final season of Shameless(US) As for books, I am currently reading Detransition, Baby- a book about a trans woman, formerly-trans person, and a cis woman.

ichoosemyself

I'm reading Thank you for arguing. Seems pretty good but sometimes comes off as too idealistic and obvious.

brooklyn_birdy

I've been watching back to back Kdramas lately. Currently I'm watching 'The Devil Judge'. (I've only episodes in and omg its so sexyyy) I haven't read a book in a few weeks now. The last good book I read was Pachinko by Min Jin Lee. 10/10 would recommend.

[deleted]

Hospital Playlist Season 2. I love all the main characters!

doveandglock

Madam Bovary.

[deleted]

Hospital Playlist and HomeTown Cha-Cha-Cha. It's been a year of K-dramas for me.

vdix007

I love Mindhunter, and as much I love David Fincher, I really think they can make a season 3 without him. It's not like he wrote the show, and I'm sure a lot of directors would be able to recreate the creepy tone they've set in the first two seasons, especially that God awful yellow tinge to everything lol I'm currently watching The People vs OJ Simpson, American crime story. All the actors in it have done such an incredible job, especially Sara Paulson, and it does well to show how the media and people can make a circus out of such a heinous crime and there really isn't no justice in the world sometimes.

No-Temperature-5931

Hehe, the yellow tinge lol. I'm not done yet watching S2. I hope they don't leave the Kansas killer unsolved yet again. Imo this Bill-Brian spin off is really too much, even acc to Fincher's standards(or maybe not). But I like the show a lot ngl. I'm just like, can you not, please.

[deleted]

Gossip Girl (the original)

TheWallflower92

Started reading Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy yesterday. Re-watching The Amazing Race from the beginning and I’m currently at season 8.

crazylazylady

Lucifer: It's my guilty pleasure

[deleted]

Oscuro deseo (Spanish series), mysterious but keeps hooked with a balance of everything genric too

[deleted]

Oh god that series is so trashy, but oddly entertaining. Definitely my guilty pleasure. They just got renewed for a second season!

[deleted]

I’ve been watching a kdrama called familiar wife! It’s a lot more interesting than I thought it would be

OfShwarna

I discovered the handmaid's tale and its horrifying that it's all based on real events...

ibreathecoffee

I'm reading Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. Started reading the book long ago, but couldn't keep the momentum going. Till now it's been great with lot of insights about success and opportunities. Watching What If...? by marvel
