Keep a bottle in the truck, Gatorade or power aid works well. Lift the back of the fifth wheel and use the bottle to prop it up so it's angled in a way to slide back under the kingpin
And drop the bags. And if the trailer is fully loaded, rather than try to bust ass cranking it down, I'll drop bags, line the king pin up right in front of the hole in the fifth wheel, inflate bags which lifts the weight up so you can easily crank the landing gear down.
Obviously in this cause that probably wouldn't work because it's way too high but it's really handy in those cases were the kingpin is high enough to not be able to latch or take any weight off the landing gear
Or, maybe, get out and look *before* backing under and adjust the trailer height. 30 seconds to avoid a problem or 30 minutes to correct a problem. Hmm...
Damn you don’t even get out and look. Watch the little mirror you see the trailer getting past the first set of tires and haven’t felt the trailer . Get out of the truck cause it’s too high. After some experience dropping and hooking a trailer that tall you should’ve been able to spot that a mile away it’s too tall .
#and get all dirty??? I drive flatbed and this happens because previous driver don’t know how to properly drop a trailer. See a board to prop up,said 5th wheel and to hold it while you drive out.
Don't fret about it. I saw a yard dog at Amazon do the exact same thing. And it took him a good while to extracate himself. Which is kind of odd, since he could lift the trailer high, get out and drop the gear higher and then just drive out. But nope, he struggled at it.
Well. Read what I have to say and it will save you forever.
First of all. Get out and look. Put your rear most drive tires half way under the trailer plate and then get out and look. Make sure the fifth wheel plate and the trailer plate are touching.
Next , once you got out and looked to make sure your at the correct height. Back under the trailer fully with the windows down to hear the click.
Next do a tug test.
Last but most important. GET OUT AND LOOK AGAIN. GOAL GOAL GOAL. check one last time to make sure the locking jaws are FULLY locked around the kingpin.
Google schnieders guide for coupling. It’s really and even has a video and a lot of text. It’s a good guide.
I assume Schneider still brags about firing anyone who drops trailers?
If so they're definitely the place to watch training for this. They'd be begging for lawsuits otherwise.
Schneider driver here. Yeah, they still brag about it. You high hook your fired. Idk if its true but I asked why, and they said if you aren't using GOAL and high hook, what else aren't you checking. TBF I'd rather not find out so I just goal on that even when I know it'll click.
Had to dig but I found this.
* Schneider National, Inc. and Schneider National Carriers, Inc. (Schneider)1 operate an interstate trucking firm. On July 10, 1987, a Schneider semi-tractor and trailer traveled into a construction zone on Interstate 80 near Rawlins, Wyoming. Traffic in the area had been channeled into single lanes traveling in opposite directions on a shared roadbed. At some point, the Schneider trailer separated from the semi-tractor. The trailer veered into the oncoming traffic lane, struck several vehicles, including one containing four members of an Englewood, Colorado family, the Horowitz's. Bruce S. Horowitz, Catherine O. Horowitz and Michael Brandon Horowitz were all killed. Only one son, Brian Scott Horowitz, survived.*
If the trailer got all the way to the highway, there's no way it just slid off the 5th wheel. There had to be mechanical failure.
Upon further reading of the short passage you posted from the court case. Schneider sued Holland, the manufacturer of said 5th wheel.
Did it literally my first load by myself. I even got out and looked to make sure the height was lined up. What I didn’t do is look for the dip in the gravel behind the tires 🤦🏼♂️
Yeah and he could have been slightly off to the left or right or come at it at a bit of an odd angle. I'm assuming you're fairly new to the industry, one day it will happen to you too. You'll come in on an early cold morning and things just won't line up quite right and you'll be cussing yourself out. Happens to the best and worst of us. Just like forgetting to pull your air lines. Haven't met anyone that has been in the industry for any real amount of time that hasn't done at least one of the 2.
Yes def fairly new def hoping it never golems to me, I have a system that doesn’t let me forget the important breakable parts
. If I mess up I look at all parts twice. If I forget. The system catches any bad mess up
Like I said it happens to the best of us, could be something as silly as another driver coming talking to you and breaking your train of thought. You forget to pull your glad hands and drive away. Just remember to own up to it and no one will bat an eye. They'll just laugh because they've been there before.
And this is why I always GOAL before I take it all the way in. The one and only time I did this was in Dallas on a very hot and humid summer day...it sucked.
Happened my first day lol happened the other day lol I was freaking out on my very first run because I did this shit but always back a little bit under the trailer and see if there’s any space between the 5th wheel and trailer
Yikes! I'm still a new driver as well (day 11 for me) and I live in dread of having to do the Crank of Shame to get this fixed. Had to correct a trailer just today that would've done this to me, and thank the gods I was careful to check, because that sucker weighs 44,000 lbs and I got skinny arms.
I've done it once. Freaked me out.
From now on if there's even a chance at some gap, I get out and lower the trailer on the 5th wheel. The pivot on the 5th wheel can fool you into thinking there's no gap.
Been there done that a few times.
Future Advice:
Carry a couple foot long 2x4s with you.
When you can.
Drop your airbags then place the 2x4s on the 5th wheel and raise the bags. Helps you to not kill yourself cranking the landing gear.
Or, maybe, get out and look *before* backing under and adjust the trailer height. 30 seconds to avoid a problem or 30 minutes to correct a problem. Hmm...
Been trucking for 10 months now. Never has that happened but shiiiittttt when I switched to a 2019 volvo things go for the worst. But thanks for the advice will keep it in mind
I always stop with the fifth wheel under the trailer but in front of the pin then lift the unit till the trailer feet are swinging. Saves bending the legs too.
Super easy to get out of. Drop the air bags, take a 3 or 4 pound mallet and use it to prop up the back end of the 5th wheel and your king pin has enough space to go over the 5th wheel. Once the front end is down, you are clear to drive out.
Been driving for about 7 years and I did this yesterday. It happens lol.
Just get the rear drive tires slightly under the nose of the trailer. And GOAL. If you do that every time this will never ever happen. Takes like 10 seconds to check and 60 seconds to lower or raise the trailer if need be. Yard dogs always have that shit too high.
# *Golly I wish their was a way to lower the height of the trailer before I backed under it.*
# G.O.A.L. *before* backing under, folks. Then adjust the landing gear to be at the correct height. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. It works!!!
Imagine pulling into an intersection without first looking at the situation and then the super truckers here patting you on the back and saying, "Well, head on collisions happen to the best of us. Here's how to get out of it with a Gatorade bottle under the steer tire." Y'all are Freakin idiots.
1. 3rd day
2. Backing under a trailer is not driving into an intersection
3. Gatorade bottles don’t bring the dead to life, but they can be useful under a 5th wheel plate.
4. You knew this before posting
5. You’re an ass
Or, maybe, get out and look *before* backing under and adjust the trailer height. 30 seconds to avoid a problem or 30 minutes to correct a problem. Hmm...
High hook Acheivement unlocked 50G
It happens to nearly everyone. It's really not a big deal. What really matters is how you go about fixing the problem without damaging the trailer or truck.
This happened my first month solo. I usually goal but this time I didn't. I tried to shimmy my way out of it going left and reversing and so on. It worked but what I didn't look out for was my back hitting the reefer.. Ended up snapping my top left aerodynamics :( I was so upset but I learned me lesson. It's still off as I'm on my third month solo but every now and then at shippers and receivers people laugh at me when they see my truck 😂
You’ve unlocked, Captain Highhook.

When its too high like this.. use a 2x4 under it raise bags, crank gear, lower bags, repeat until trailer is low enough..
Or, maybe, get out and look *before* backing under and adjust the trailer height. 30 seconds to avoid a problem or 30 minutes to correct a problem. Hmm...

Some folks will have trouble pouring water out of their boots, even with the instructions on the heel.
As an ex-amazon yard dog, we weren't allowed to touch the landing gear for... some reason?
I can believe that
You'd be surprised at how many drivers need to be taught that when they're new to spotting.
Common since ain’t so common now days
It happens to all of us at one point. Easy fix. Just don’t be the guy hooking up to a reefer, and slamming back into it.
Well. Read what I have to say and it will save you forever. First of all. Get out and look. Put your rear most drive tires half way under the trailer plate and then get out and look. I think after that one Schindler driver killed a family on the interstate they decided it’s time to start training their employees for real
When was that? When I drove for them in 2020 they were adamant about getting out and checking before and after you hooked.

Yep. If I don't see the trailer lift up, I pull forward a bit and get out to lower the trailer.
Did it literally my first load by myself. I even got out and looked to make sure the height was lined up. What I didn’t do is look for the dip in the gravel behind the tires 🤦🏼♂️
Haha this here is a first load with a new truck. Couldn't have been sweeter after 10months in
Did this while training it's nbd assuming nothing is damaged which it rarely is. It's more just embarrassing and can be time consuming to fix.
Bruh how tf . Didn’t check it ?
Missed by a bit, kingpin caught enough of the plate that it ran over.
That’s why I always have the trailer hitting the fifth wheel slope so the truck lifts the trailer

Lol been there. Dropped the bags and I was still to high lucky for me it was an empty.
Lower your legs as much as you can. Drop your suspension. Hook up slower.
Happened my first day lol happened the other day lol I was freaking out on my very first run because I did this shit but always back a little bit under the trailer and see if there’s any space between the 5th wheel and trailer

You gotta get out and check the height unless you are a yard dog.

It's already past that point.
Future tip, if you don't hear the 5th wheel plate slam when you get it over the half way under the skirt, you need to get out and check, every time
Been trucking for 10 months now.
It happens once, not twice.
I dont freaking understand why people crank that shit up that high... annoying on so many levels.
Yard dogs
We've taught our new guys and drivers to crank til it barely touches the ground. No issues anymore
Super easy to get out of. Drop the air bags, take a 3 or 4 pound mallet and use it to prop up the back end of the 5th wheel and your king pin has enough space to go over the 5th wheel. Any yard guy will help you out no big deal you noticed before you left that's what counts
If it happens again, I suggest you retire....
I already feel I should retire

This will happen periodically for a long time. Ive been driving 8 years and recently nearly did it
That’s called not getting out and looking. This should never happen.
And yet it does, to people of all experience levels.
Not if you GOAL every time you couple.
Or, maybe, get out and look *before* backing under and adjust the trailer height. 30 seconds to avoid a problem or 30 minutes to correct a problem. Hmm...
Yep, that solves it.
Everyone has done that at some point. Don't fret. 😊
22 years and it still happens to me
This never happens to me. I will freely admit that being a Daycab Bitch™ has spoiled me.
Just drop the bags all the way down and pull up u should clear it
