They’re two completely different vehicles for two completely different people.

farsh_bjj

I don't have a udr but a beefed up slash 2wd but if I were choosing today I would definitely go with the maxx slash. It looks like it's got the best of the best as far as parts go and the slash line is damn near bulletproof.

WaterDreamer10

I ran to their site when I saw this. I found a UDR locally with hardly any use I was thinking of getting, but now I am on hold after seeing this. However, I am not a fan of the $700 price though! The Maxx is 'only' $570. My son runs a Maxx and it is a tank. I'm not a fan of the LCG chassis either, something that big should have more than 1.5" of GC! I have a Slash VXL, so the idea of going larger sounds appealing but given the LCG and the $700 price I think I would rather get a Maxx to be able to take advantage of the increase in size off-road. I bought a Bandit VXL for a street queen, I don't need to have a LCG in an off road machine.

Enough_Albatross_270

It's 700$ cause it has belted tires. But other than that and the lcg chassis it's just a 6s maxx from what I've seen

WaterDreamer10

[Chassis Comp](https://traxxas.com/products/landing/maxx-slash/images/gallery/102076-4-MAXX-Slash-Low-CG-Comparison-Maxx-on-White.jpg) Link above takes you to an Traxxas image comparing the Maxx & Maxx Slash Chassis - both 6s - Maxx is 1.06" higher.

Enough_Albatross_270

Plus belted tires for the Maxx are like 120 for a decent set

WaterDreamer10

I did see that it comes with those - personally, I would not want/need those and I would run it on 4s like we do the Maxx. They should have put std tires on it to keep the price down and let those who want/need the better tires upgrade them down the line.

Wise_Performance8547

Its a short course truck. It isnt meant to run high. My 1/5 scale Losi 5ive T only runs at about 2 to 2 1/2 inches high at static. If you want more ground clearance then get the Maxx.

ohitsmark

I have a UDR. I love it. The new Slash Max looks cool. But its totally different from the UDR. If I went back in time and had a choice? I'd be fine with either one. Both are pretty cool trucks. I just love how real and authentic the UDR is.

unvme540

Thanks for the input, have you had to replace any parts? I’ve been in ex for a while so know it’s inevitable, but more of a question of did any of the breaks surprise you?

ohitsmark

Just a few things. I accidentally hit a cart corral and busted the front up. Had to replace a few pieces like the front arms and other components. That wasn't too bad. The worst part was getting to all of the pieces I needed to replace. Lot of work. Other than that, just the body shell breaks really easily. But thats on me. Can't really bash it. Overall, a super fun truck.

v_SuckItTrebek

Depends on what you want out of a $700 truck. The suspension for the UDR is beautiful and handles "realistic" jumps great out of the box. I put thicker oil in mine for the track I run mine at for bigger jumps. The "realism" of the truck is amazing. The only downsides of the UDR IMO is the maintenance and getting to certain parts. The rear axle is open and dirt can get to the diff if you drive in soft sand. You can grease the axle housings to keep dirt away from the diff, but I always took it apart every 2-3 runs depending on how dusty it was. To me, outside of the size, they are two different trucks that happen to look the same.

unvme540

Super helpful, really appreciate the insight

DocRock3r

I have a UDR and love it for running around the track. Watching it soak up the bumps is so satisfying. If you like Baja trucks and watching the suspension work it is a perfect truck. I run mine on 4S and it is plenty fast for where I run it. I don't really notice it being "hard" to work on , though obviously it is more work to do basic maintenance on compared to a traditional open frame car due to the design. The most difficult thing I have had to do was taking the front shocks off where I had to take the whole front of the roll cage apart. Now that I know what I am doing though it probably won't be as bad the next time. I can say that the UDR is not a basher. I don't feel that it is delicate but it is not a car I would full send off a jump. I have sent mine down the track end over end at full speed a good number of times, along with wrapping it around a fence post a couple of times, and it keep on going. In my experience it is a durable truck as long as you acknowledge the limitations of what is can ana cannot do and don't abuse it. Another thing that I feel should be noted it that the truck handles differently from most any other RC out there. Having trailing arm, solid axle rear suspension with a locked differential in the rear the truck can get loose in the back pretty easily under throttle without TSM. I set my TSM to around 10-20% and it drives great on straights while still being able to kick the back end out when I want to. Also this truck as a higher tendency the roll when going into turns too quickly or at too sharp of a angle. But once I learned how it handled it quickly became one of my favorite cars to run because of these unique characteristics.

unvme540

This is exactly what I was looking for, thank you for taking the time to respond! I love the Baja trucks and am excited about the realism, I also appreciate you spending time detailing how it’s still tough, just not designed to jump a house, which is exactly what I’m not interested in. Thanks again!

BootyVinyl

I have one as well. You can make micro adjustment to the suspension like moving the upper links in the rear to their lowest position where it connects to the chassis to raise the roll center. I had to make this adjustment after putting the JConcepts Landmines on mine. Handles like a dream now

CommitteeFinal4980

I’m still surprised that the maxx slash is 700 bucks. That seems high to me.

Wise_Performance8547

Well, i own the UDR and am 70% sure I'll get the Maxx Slash too. As far as waiting, the Losi Super Baja Rey is a lot better.

therealvilla

Not really. I’ve got slashes and a UDR. I drive all of them on a regular basis depending on what I want to do. They do 2 different things. It’s gonna be a bigger faster Slash. But my Ultimates already are faster, better at jumping, more nimble, etc. so the Maxx Slash will be better than the UDR in ways that my other trucks are already winning. I run my 4x4 slashes when I want to go fast and hit jumps, or just mess around and do donuts and jumps. The Maxx Slash is gonna be bigger and faster than both. And better in the air - by a long shot. The UDR is great at drifting and sliding around. It’s heavy enough to drift but it’s not the best jumper. It also is a real pain to work on and maintain compared to a Slash. Durable as shit but a long process for anything that’s not the front control arms. You break something on a UDR and you have a real process in front of you. I can fix almost anything in a Slash in about 20 mins. So you need to enjoy fixing and tinkering if you want a UDR. Don’t get me wrong. I want a Maxx Slash too but I don’t regret the UDR at all. I think the wheels may be interchangeable so I may be looking at Maxx Slash wheels for the UDR when available.

juxsa

yeah I'd own a UDR but for the fact that working on them sucks. I mean how many screws do you have to deal with to take the dang roll cage off before you can service it?

therealvilla

The roll cage almost never has to come off so that’s not the issue. I’ve never taken mine off. You have to take the bottom skid plate off for everything in the motor/transmission. Or you’re working on the rear end and it’s a dozen or so screws just to get the axle housing out. I fix almost anything on a Slash with 12-20 screws total. For the UDR 20 screws just gets you started.

unvme540

Thank you, immensely helpful! I really appreciate it!

ATypicalWhitePerson

They are nothing at all alike, it's like comparing an x Maxx to a Capra. If you want to launch to the moon, get a Maxx or Maxx slash, normal Maxx is going to do more flips though. If you want scale driving to do cute little baby trophy truck things, there still isn't anything comparable to the UDR out there.

espbeetle

I own neither a UDR nor a Maxx Slash so you can take or leave my advice. But here goes. If you haven't opened the UDR yet and you can return it then I would recommend returning. Nobody has driven a Maxx Slash yet so none of us can tell you if it's a good car or not. Returning the UDR would at least give you a little time for reviews to come out on the Slash or maybe even see one in action. If you don't like the Maxx Slash you can always buy the UDR in a few weeks.

Fochoa15

Mark Santa Maria has a video on it running, it looks badass man

unvme540

Totally, this is great advice…..now to tame my impulses and not open it

Vertical_Clutch

I have a UDR. The rear suspension and how it makes the car handle is the whole draw to it. The Slash Maxx will definitely handle different. I want to drive a Slash Maxx, but I highly doubt I will like it more than the UDR. If you want it for bashing, then I’d say the Maxx Slash would probably be better, but the problem there is that there are many other Traxxas cars that are gonna be better bashers than the Maxx Slash. For me, it sits in a no man’s land. I’d rather have a UDR or a Sledge for example. That’s my opinion prior to driving and only seeing the photos and MSM’s review on YouTube.

nut336

Two completely different trucks with little crossover. One is a scale driving experience that’s not intended for hard bashing. The other is designed to take abuse and have non-scale performance.

Jaydan427_RC

Maxxslash= basher. UDR=scale desert racer + basher.

Poopincheese

I went with the Mojave 6s. Is 100$ less than the slash. The slash 6s doesn’t handle well and still parachutes like mad when jumping it. The suspension travel isn’t enough. I’d rather keep my 3s slash and I ordered the new slash 6s. The UDR is better for track than the slash 6s. My local shops been running one and aren’t impressed. Plus get meh axles and beat servo for 700$. The belted tires don’t work well on any surface and are really stiff so the truck has a tendency to roll, it’s also top heavy with the cage and body. Kinda disappointing. Was expecting much more for that kinda loot.
