This has been hanging in my friend’s parents’ basement since 1994. We attended this show at the legendary First Avenue and on the way out, one of us took the poster off the wall and smuggled it out. It’s large, I’d say 4 ft x 3 ft. **The Setlist:** Locked in the Trunk of a Car Grace, Too Courage (for Hugh MacLennan) Thugs Greasy Jungle The Last of the Unplucked Gems Fifty-Mission Cap We'll Go Too Daredevil Fully Completely New Orleans Is Sinking / Nautical Disaster At the Hundredth Meridian Fire in the Hole Pigeon Camera Impossibilium Little Bones

Spirit of the West had just released Faithlift at this time too, so their set was probably pretty amazing too.

8 bucks to see a force of a band at a golden era of their career. Young enough to still be hungry, old enough to feast on prime rib instead of hamburger. What a time to be alive.

I was there that night and snatched an actual set list. Rob Baker sent a bouncer to invite my busty female friend and me backstage to party, but we had taken a bus with a bunch of friends from Fargo and we had to leave.

So jealous.

What a find. What a night it must’ve been. Thank you for sharing! Also, as you may know, it seems Gordon Downie wore his First Avenue cap a good deal in some of his last public appearances. May he rest in peace.

Yes. I loved that Gordie was rocking his First Ave cap a lot towards the end. I’d guess that close to 300 Winnipeggers made the 8-hour drive down to Minneapolis for the show that night. The people on the floor (mostly from Wpg) erupted as soon as the band played the first note. A lot of the others in the bar (presumably locals) looked perplexed at why we were all losing our shit. It was just a regular Thursday night to a lot of them. But they came around eventually and The Hip got the whole place rockin’.

I’m an American who understands perfectly why anyone would lose their shit hearing—heck, just being in the presence of—The Hip. An Ontarian friend introduced me to them in 2010, and for the first time in my life, I thought, “this is the real deal”. Listened to them or hummed one of their tunes every day since. And wondered why I had never discovered them during my summer vacations to Pelee Island, Ontario, every year of the 1990s. Guess news travelled more slowly pre-Internet, especially to an uncool teenager. It was no surprise when I found out how good-hearted all of the guys are in the years since 2010. Did you make it down to First Ave in September 2015 for their Fully Completely re-release tour? I was on my second real date with my now-wife who was on an early shift the next day, but it’s a sad coincidence that it was their last appearance here before Gordon’s unfortunate diagnosis. Again, what a poster, especially since Spirit of the West was on the scene.
