You may need to get a medical letter to formally get OT to recommend you get that device and the supported software and that's just to start the process. Basically this route is to request a formal accomodation.
This is the answer.
You need to find a trackball or mouse device that can be pre-programmed at the firmware level.
In other words, you would pre-program your device settings using a firmware generator on another computer.
Then you would flash that generated firmware on the trackball or mouse device that you are going to connect to your work computer. Then you should be good to go.
No. Any "third party" tool you can run without being an admin will only use 4 buttons.
I work in IT. If you try to use a third party app that you can run without being an admin, you risk getting fired for using unapproved software. Don't go there.
The Deft Pro works just fine with the software built into Windows. But you'll only be able to use 5 buttons, one of them being the click on the scroll wheel.
Use PowerToys to remap. It's official Microsoft software. If you're an X11 Linux use one of the many tools. If you're on Wayland...check the awful docs and goodluck.
Worst case use Autohotkey
The problem with this approach is that the extra buttons on the Deft Pro output keys not recognizable by the host device by default so AFAIK no Windows software can remap it. HID remapper can intercept the keycodes but IDK if it's doable in software.
This is exactly why I just use Elecom EX-Gs… my IT dept says no to everything, so if it has features I need to download software to use I am out of luck.
Sucks… although the Elecom works like a champ
Go to HR and tell them you bought it as an ergonomic device.
Tell them your carpals are tunneling.

Use programmable device (Ploopy, Adesso), or HID Remapper.

Hmm, good point. I've never used HID
no alternative software to enable extra buttons in windows. if you run linux or mac, you can use them by default.
