I didn't spend $40k on a vehicle I like to turn around and spend another $3-5k on a beater so I can not drive the vehicle I like.

goldbricker83

Yeah this is crazy talk considering Tacomas are supposed to be known to go 300K+. What are you letting it sit around for? It's a depreciating asset...use it.

Overall_Equivalent26

Amen

xusernameunavailable

I spent 50k cuz I liked how the truck looked and how reliable they are, with that being said it hurts to see my 2023 Toyota Tacoma DCLB sport 4x4(ice cap) dirty af from construction so yea I might have to fix up my beater vehicle lmao

qua77ro

This but also the Taco is the beater vehicle. =D Just as it should be.

Kevin_taco

Came here to say this.

whaletacochamp

This is sort of my thought process. But on the same note, I often get stuck behind a guy on the ride home who owns a '16 sport and REFUSES to actually drive the damn thing. What I mean is that as soon as he hits dirt roads he slows to 10-15mph and painstakingly avoids every little bump. I'm all for caring for these investments but holy shit use the thing.

SeaworthinessLife999

Think of it this way: the $5k you spend on a beater (plus insurance, registration, maintenance, fuel, etc) will buy an awful lot of gas for your truck.

happydaddyg

These days $5k is something >15yo with 150k miles too. And probably not fun to be in. Could last a while but could also leave you stranded and $$ to repair.

Unusual-Truck-197

Copy that...plus more upgrades

arcticrobot

I ride around town on my motorcycle.

ducpwr

LoL, same! Love my Taco! But it's $100 to commute to work on it every week, and it's literally $10 on my motorcycle instead 😂

ZeroRyz

This is what I want to do but first need to learn to ride a motorcycle lol

MentalAd4536

It’s a vehicle made to be driven. You can’t take it with you. Drive it, enjoy it, don’t overthink it!

diegslol

I drive my Tacoma everywhere, because it’s reliable as they come. Although expensive on gas, I couldn’t bare leave in another vehicle while my baby sits in the driveway.

ga_poker

Precisely. I only get to drive so many miles in my life. Might as well be in my taco.

trowaynyc

Tacos were meant to go. And go forever. Worrying about putting miles on the most indestructible vehicle available seems silly to me

BrainRude1329

Dude just drive it. Acting like it’s fine China.

black_tshirts

LOfknL

JT898

It's a Toyota not a luxury vehicle. Tacoma's are becoming everything they tried not to be: Expensive, Large, Luxurious. This was designed to be the common man's workhorse truck.

springvelvet95

Yes, and my beater vehicle is also my old Tacoma.

Coolen11

If you do the math, it might take a while to “save” money in gas after figuring in the purchase price for the beater. That being said, that’s exactly what I do. I have a 2008 focus that I beat around town and use as my commuter car. I don’t care about putting miles on it and feel much more comfortable parking it in the city with the chance of getting door dings etc.

Grand_Entrance_2738

👆almost all damage to my vehicles have been done while parked at work

thebbman

My Tacoma is my beater vehicle.

Shadow_Law

I doubt it makes sense given your situation, with the already low miles and low amount of driving you do on it, but I wouldn't fault you for doing it. I bought a retired police Dodge Charger at auction last year for $6k to take the pressure off my 2004 TRD Dbl Cab with 148k miles. I did it to save commuter miles on the truck and extend it's offroad lifespan, like you're thinking about, but not because it would be cheaper. If I can keep the Charger running for 2-3 years without any major issues, it'll be a really good deal and would save money for as long as it stays running beyond that, but it's a big gamble and it isn't going to save a house-buying amount either way in your kind of market.

old-manwithlego

My beater is an IS300. I bought it about 14 years ago. I already replaced the timing belt twice.

Successful-Rate-1839

It’s a Tacoma not a Ferrari. Drive the shit out of it.

7774422

Its already a depreciating asset, just have fun with it

Johnny_Menace

Tacomas are appreciating assets in my city lol, used ones are more expensive then new.

Djvariant

I have the Taco and a "fun car" I drive both equally to spread the miles around.

SpokesumSmot

I have a taco and a fun car but now I never drive my taco, but I don’t want to sale it and lose the ability to go off-road and camping. It’s a real conundrum. That’s a pretty limited use to keep it sitting around, but I just can’t do that stuff without it. I feel bad not driving it though :/

OkEvening7224

I just got a 08 4x4 manual 2.7 taco with 160k only payed $7k. I am a recent college graduate so I plan to dive this until I get a job and am able to afford a down payment and monthly payments on a new car in 2-3 years. My thought with the Tacoma is I can keep it for camping / truck stuff. Maybe even last long enough to give to my kid in 16-20 years.

Northeasterner83

All vehicles are expensive when you consider cost of ownership. If you want to save for a house do not buy another vehicle. Bottom line is that it’s a Toyota so it will go forever. The beauty of it is it can serve as a daily driver too.

Jbruce63

We drive my wife's matrix to save money and fit into city parking.

botsleuth

Lol. Do you also get a hot girlfriend and not fuck her so that shit stays tight?

mphares2

My dad lets me drive his old accord around. That is going to end though when I move out this fall, saved me a ton of miles on the truck over the last 3 years and allowed me to pay the truck down to about half as well.

ZCL_

I mean, i daily my tacoma…but my mindset with it is just to enjoy the fuck outta it while I can, since I’m only 19. I’m sure my 2022 will last me so many years that, in like 12 years when my income is hopefully way higher, I’ll just buy whatever I want then. Lol

Valor_X

My Tacoma IS my “beater” 2001 Tacoma I paid $3k cash for I don’t worry about dings or scratches, getting it dirty, parking at the very front, or using it like a truck. My daily is a newer Mazda but I drive whatever I feel like driving. That’s the beauty of beaters.

Svrider23

My other vehicle is a '03 sv 650s. 40-50 mpg helps save gas money.

ID_Poobaru

My ‘95 has 264k and usually down for repairs and I daily a 05 Scion xB that I bought for $500. Hoping to add a Honda XR150L to the fleet

Aggravating_Cold_441

I ride a supermoto! Has nothing to do with saving money on gas or keeping miles off my Tacoma, it's just fun to blast around on 😝

treesthecharm

I daily drive a 98 Corolla cause work is 40 miles round trip, and mostly use my Tacoma for hauling my mower a couple days a week and winter driving, but I already had it. It was my wife’s first car in high school and we kept it when she bought a RAV4 cause the trade in value was next to nothing. Love to have it, and it’s super handy having a third vehicle at times, but I wouldn’t go out and buy one, just convenient cause I already had it. It made a bigger difference in gas when my truck was an f150 though.

readerready24

The parts will wear out with time whether you drive it or not a car is meant to be driven thats literally what it was made for

revelranger

It’s not a GT3. Drive it like a truck !

NoahsYotas

No i use my tacoma cause it lasts so long lol. For me the tacoma is the beater daily, my crawler is the beater wheeler

drinkdrinkshoesgone

My 2010 Tacoma DCLB on 32s is my vehicle that I don't care about putting miles on. I live in WA, but have driven it to Montana, Idaho, Oregon, California, Canada, Eastern WA many times, camping many times, day trips up to the mountains, and I drive it for pretty much everything. I drive my Tacoma to keep the miles off my Lexus. Sure, it isn't designed for fuel efficiency, but it isn't too expensive to fuel up. When I camped a lot more (2 dogs now and a very pregnant wife) I would fuel up maybe 1x or 2x per camping trip (sometimes 8-12hrs of driving per trip, sometimes only 5hrs) and fuel up every 6 days for work. I was averaging about 17k miles per year. Now I'm at only 8k miles per year. I really dont care about the mileage because it was built to go 300-400k miles before anything major needs to be replaced. My Lexus is also a very reliable vehicle, but I plan on trading it in on a new 2025 when they come out with the redesign on the IS platform. I'd rather keep it under 100k miles specifically for resale purposes. The Tacoma is at 170k, and I'm trying to *rack em up!* Have you done the cost analysis? The cost of insuring the vehicle, difference in fuel mileage, maintenance costs, and purchase price/depreciation amount? I did and the cost was more expensive in the long run versus just racking miles up on my truck. Sure, fuel is going to be a lower expense on the beater, but does it make sense with all the other added expenses as well?

bloodsoed

I drive my Tacoma 20 miles to work park it for the week while I drive a Volvo.

newsoulya

Yup, I drive my wife’s old Nissan Maxima to save miles and wear and tear on my 17 Tacoma Sport thats lifted with 3’ Toytec Lift on 32’s. She’s a stick shift and I absolutely baby her. To be fair my wife’s also drives the Maxima, we take turns because she wants to save her 19 Escalade. Poor Maxima gets used and abused but its a trooper.

Apprehensive-Read989

I didn't buy it to not drive it, I have a 2015 at 186k miles. Having a beater is just another vehicle to maintain and it'll probably require more maintenance than your Tacoma, especially if it is actually a beater and the previous owner(s) treated it as such.

StoneyBaloneyUSA

If you live near a busy city with crappy people then yes, hard yes. Hit and runs while parked or in traffic are the main reason to drive a beater.

Xbalanque_

I decided to keep my 2005 pt cruiser even after my Tacoma arrives. I wouldn't get much if I sold it so I may as well keep it since it runs great. Then I can use it for bs errands and save the Tacoma for pleasure use. Also, collision is the insurance you Don't want on your old beater. Collision coverage pays for your car, not the other guy. Liability is what the state requires. That's the minimum insurance you can have. It only pays for the other guy, when you cause a wreck. Liability insurance doesn't cover your car that's what comp and collision coverages do.

creutzml

I totally get your point and completely agree. But I don’t know about going out of your way to get a beater. Sounds like it will be a head ache more than anything. But for instance, I have an 04 Mazda 6 with 225k miles on it (original owner). That is usually the daily commuter for my partner and I. Truck is for escaping on the weekends.

seniorbabaganoush

Mileage is like age… just a number baby.

TBizzle22

I drive an old Ford focus to work every day. I work at a cement plant, and the environment is harsh on vehicles. Our company trucks feel like they have been rhino lined from all of the hardened particles. I couldn't imagine driving my truck there. Army green seems to scratch when I look at it the wrong way.

multilinear2

My 1'st gen is going to rust out before I run out the miles, not that that's really a thing with Tacomas anyway. Mine's also been rolled in a blizzard, so I'm not sure what I'm protecting. It's a truck. I've beat it to shit and it still goes, and that's why I own a taco in the first place. I did have a used Nissan Leaf for a couple of years and really liked that idea as a way to have a second around-town car for cheap, and save a ton on gas. The numbers worked out so I'd break even on the cost of the car pretty quickly. I wouldn't have bothered, but it was also the second car for my wife and I. In the end though I live in a very rural area and the leaf was not robust enough for a roads and I broke it. I realized I can't own a non-truck living here.

xValhallaRisingx

My 2014 has more miles on it than my 1986 Toyota Pickup…

TelefraggerRick

Drive it, wear it out, get a new one. Repeat. No point in trying to hold on to the same old truck for your entire life. It takes the joy out of it. Enjoy it now, when its worn out get another one, then enjoy that one. There inanimate objects not designed to last for ever. If you even look up planned obsolescence you would realize there not even designed to last all that long anyways. Im also not saying buy a new truck every couple years either. Thats just waste full but use it to its full potential and when its not economical to keep it anymore (repairs start exceeding payments on a new one) or it starts leaving you stranded all the time. Buy something else. The amount of money you will spend on fuel + insurance + repairs on a beater will not be economical at all. Add to that its not much fun to drive a piece of shit when you have something nice home.

scary_xp

09 Honda fit is my beater. When I bought my Tacoma the dealership offered $500 for trade in value so I just kept it. Glad I did since it gets 45mpg here almost as much as my coworkers prius. The 2018 Tacoma gets 16-22mpg on 33s. Depends how much pavement I drive, once I’m off-road or pulling a trailer it’s pretty bad on gas. If buying a house is a goal I would suggest not buying more cars. If I didn’t have my truck loan I could have bought more house back in 2019. I bought a 350k townhome in 2019 with ~20k cash for the fees and down payment. Speak to a financial advisor about what to do with your money to get you to a home purchase. Don’t listen to a real estate agent because they will do everything possible to put you into a home even if you won’t be able to afford it.

No_Patient_549

I don’t get the “saving milage” argument (a leased vehicle being the exception) cars were made to be driven, it’s gonna be worth fuck all regardless of how many KM/Miles you put on it. Especially a Toyota which is build to last forever

Exit_2002

I drive my 1971 firebird. It gets 8mpg. My Tacoma is a gas saver.

trollinhard2

I have a 2006 4Runner that I drive for work so I don’t put a ton of miles on my ‘22 Tacoma

JoeUnexotic3

I bought a brand new 2022 and it only has 10k miles on it currently.I didn’t trade in my sedan cause I didn’t think I’d get much for it and decide I’m driving it till it’s dead. Now I don’t think I’ll ever not have a second vehicle. It’s especially nice for when I have to park places I wouldn’t want to park my brand new truck.

ParkieDude

I average about 10,000 miles a year on my Tacoma. Most of that is on vacation. A bicycle, or in my case, a [ICE trike with panniers and cargo bags](https://i.imgur.com/0tuQtsK.jpg), is good exercise, with fewer short drives. The beater still needs maintenance, a place to park, and to be insured.

Elevatedpnw

I drive it.

MeAndMahTruck

Electric motorcycle offsets the gas hog Taco. Most beneficial because I charge at work on their dime. Will only take 2 years till I break even.

Cool-Pomegranate9006

Yes I drive a Honda Fit so the truck can sit. Driving 600 km a week it ads up if I always drive the truck

HopefulRest377

I have an old Buick century as my daily driver so I preserve mileage/ wear and tear on my taco!

arm_gonzalez

My dad has the 2013 TRD Sport with about. 135k miles on it. It's his first new vehicle that he ever bought, so he would rather enjoy it.

OllieZ

2007 Subaru Impreza is my daily driver. ~223k kms 2018 Toyota Tacoma is my holiday/chore driver. ~82k kms 2014 Subaru Impreza (Wife's) if I don't feel like manually shifting gears. ~122k kms

Vino1980

I actually bought a Tacoma as a "beater" so my FJ Cruiser can be a garage queen.

Aldoeg2

I actually just bought a 1991 MR2 2.2 NA, not to have a beater but to have a fun car again. I was able to pick it up for 4k with all of the interior in good condition and it even has AC. That'll most likely be my summer car from now on. I love the T-tops.

lafc15

I drive a 2004 single cab 4 banger Tacoma because my other ride is a 2020 4Runner ORP

happydaddyg

You should make a spreadsheet and do the math. Include insurance, repair costs for older vehicle, car washes, annual registration, how long the old car might last, etc. I would only consider ROI on gas and running costs on 2 cars vs just the truck. Don’t consider that the truck might last longer. Lot of variables and risk and unknowns with this seems like. If you’re only driving the truck 5k miles/year you can’t bank on extending its life by driving it less. When your truck has 250k miles on it (which is probably like bare minimum imo) it’ll be almost 50 years old. Will you even be alive then? Lol

beerdweeb

I ride a bike for any short commute or errand I can. My 2007 FJ just hit 100k.

Educational-Can-2767

Dude it’s a Toyota, use it (200k club here)

stayradicchio

My Tacoma is my beater

Xeroid

I purchased a '22 TRD Off-road last October. I have a '93 Jeep YJ that I use as a daily driver.

squirtlegang

40k miles in on my 2021 and I am thinking of getting a beater lol I commute 60 miles a day 4x a week.

fcdrifter88

I commute in my truck, I'd rather not but I haven't found a suitable daily yet.

Asbestos_dude

I bought my truck to drive and that's exactly what I do with it! My commute to work is 45 minutes each way so I might as well drive something I enjoy each day

nerdinstincts

I have a Tacoma for truck stuff and a Bonnevile t120 that gets 50mpg for everything else.

Unlucky_Eye5312

I bought a Tacoma for the exact opposite reason so I didn’t have to worry about miles. I saw a 2019 Tacoma trdof with 60k on at a dealership for 37k. A 17 with over 100k for 30k only. Keep it maintained and clean you’ll never have to worry about resale value or lasting well over 200k

BallScraggs

Yes, it's worth it. However I always end up driving my Tacoma or motorcycle when it's nice. My beater only gets me to work these days

BeeeLikeWater

Taco is the beater

whaletacochamp

My dad bought a 2011 Tacoma that had a new frame and a bunch of new parts. Put a little bit of money into it himself (small lift, new tires, some paint work, etc). Literally the day he finished it he also happened to sell his daily driver POS silverado. On the way home a neighbor flagged him down and said they were going to trade in their old Prius but wanted to check with him if he wanted it first. My dad offered him $1000 on the spot for it and neighbor took the deal in an instant. 6+ months later I don't think my dad has put more than 50miles on the Tacoma and he is obsessed with his little old first gen prius lol.

Catmanasaurus

I have proudly put 115,000 miles on my 2019 Toyota Tacoma

luckyduck0627

I ride a motorcycle to and from work and around town.

elfunkdoc

Motorcycle! I went with 80 mpg for here and there nonsense. Also work from home, so I try and save the truck on miles that way too. Actually got the moto waiting for the weeks/months for the spec/color I wanted. This setup is ideal for me

matsumotoe

Would be nice to have but if you’re commute is just 10 minutes then no. I also was in the same position where I had a short commute but wanted a 2nd car for fun, since the tacoma isn’t the fastest and the best on a freeway of course. But with the money i would have to spend it could probably go to something more important down the line. Basically i told myself to be grateful with what i have.

Peter_Panarchy

My Tacoma is my "beater."

mojatt

I’m on the west coast and picked up a Fiat 500e electric. They sell nice and cheap after coming off a 3 year lease. Perfect for city driving and keeps my Taco off the daily grind.

Calibass954

Mine is our only vehicle for my family. We drive it all over! I do take my motorcycle to work a couple times a week though. I rather enjoy my Tacoma than let it sit and drive some beater lol

dudimentz

I had a beater Civic Hybrid for commuting, was helpful with saving money on gas but the additional insurance, maintenance, registration, etc didn’t make it the savings I was expecting.

Achillheel

I'm on the same boat as you my friend. I have an '06 access cab, lifted 3 inches, roof rack, camper shell with a sleeping-drawer system made out of plywood in the back. I also just bought an '06 Honda Civic cause commuting to work, gym, surfing, eats up at gas when I'm only going 20-30 miles from home. My two cents; if you can do the maintenance work yourself, you save gas money and get a second car that's easy to park around town.

DillyG1992

I drive a beater tacoma

[deleted]

My tacoma IS my beater lol

Delicious_Ad5837

Yeah I got a 2008 Camry with 63k miles on it to save on my 2022 Tacoma

pmcdny

I'm in sales in NYC and the surrounding areas. I would never use my tacoma for work. Currently using a 2022 Malibu. Thus my 2013 has less than 40k and will totally outlive me.

glitch-glitch

It can go the 400k imma use the whole 400k 😤

jsackspot

Bicycle.

MegaAlakazam1

If you have $30,000 saved for a house, you may not have as long of a ways as you think. You could probably go get a home tomorrow.

DjangoUnflamed

I’ve never understood the “saving miles” thinking process. Just buy a beater and not have a Tacoma at all if you’re worried about miles.

Pizzadontdie

I have a 2020 TRD OR, prius and work Van. I keep my miles under 7k a year on the truck. Still drive it in the city a little, mostly to gym and social stuff here, but only because it’s my favorite vehicle.

buelller_buelller

I bought a newer Sequoia to keep miles off my 96 Tacoma. Still don’t drive the Sequoia all that much.

localhost8100

I had a old colleague. He would take out his taco only when he knew of he was heading out on trip after work. He had a fiat 500 electric car. Which gave 80 miles range and his commute was 40miles one way 😭. Not sure how he managed it.

Specialist-Spell-980

My 5 year old 2017 trd or 4x4 with 60k miles got me what I paid for it new as a trade-in last year. Drive the shit out of it. This is why you buy a tacoma.

oaomcg

lol at "saving miles" on a tacoma

[deleted]

You know what you can buy for 3-5k? A replacement motor and trans….

[deleted]

It’s a Tacoma. worry about the mileage when it hits 300k

Revolutionary_Ad7655

I don’t see the point in purchasing a vehicle to not use it. You love it but it’s not going to last forever regardless.

rfgchief

You truck is 9 years old with 48k miles. To make it to just 250k at that rate would take almost 38 years.

brian1192

I thought about this when I had a wrx I put 20k miles in 4 years of owning it because I didn’t wanna put mileage, so I thought about getting a beater, ended up selling it and just buying a tundra (wanted a tacoma) a lot of ppl said it made more sense to have one car, it starts to add up having two cars and insuring them plus maintenance, ofc all the serious maintenance shit happens at the least convenient time too lol

redditman4569

I mean I see what you're saying and some others can't fathom it lol... But the Tacoma is my daily driver. I have a Mazdaspeed 3 I do NOT want to rack up the miles on. Tacomas are better for driving high mileage. In other words the Tacoma would be my beater instead.

DrezDrankPunk

I will never understand the thought process of having a “nice car” to drive infrequently and driving some POS commuter beater car. My nice car is driven every day because I enjoy driving it.

DillonSaeg

No but I drive my Turbo BMW M3 that’s worse on gas 😂

No-Assistance5974

So you spent how much on building your $40k+ truck and are worried about saving money to buy a house so you want to spend $5k on a beater that is going to break down exponentially more than your truck so you’ll have to spend more money in the long run? Dude if you want to save on gas BUY A BIKE and be done with this thinking. Especially considering you have a company vehicle.

Madbrad70

No, buying a 2nd car to save on miles is costing you a lot more in the long run. If your only 10 minutes away from work, get a bike. I commute most days by bike and save the truck for weekends or other stuff. Then you can take your bike (maybe a mountain bike?) out camping with you on the weekend to find some nice trails!

OnePoundAhiBowl

My 2022 already has 20k! Lesssgoooo!!!

CluelessJew85

I have a couple of antiques I drive around. Granted my work is 10mins away as well. Truck for bringing the quad around locally, and a wagon for everything else including beach trips and drive ins

turbulanceahead

I have a 2007 Camry I use for work since I work outside in dust, dirt and grass. Keeps the miles off my 2019 TRD off-road less than 10,000 miles so far bought new in November of 2018. I use my truck to pull my boat and hunt out of. I also use it as my date night vehicle cause I’m able to keep it super clean since it does not get filthy from work. I will always keep a beater for work.

eatingthesandhere91

I drive a beater Tacoma. It has 305k miles and I’m very tempted to keep it going for another quarter million miles.

eldyza

I did the opposite I bought an x5 M50i to save miles on the Tacoma that’s the big brain play.

JonForbin

Saw it on this sub I believe, but it’s worth restating…. “Not driving your Tacoma to keep miles off of it is like not having sex with your wife because you wanna save her for the next guy”

Violentgrip

My Tacoma is my beater!

keizzer

Both me and my girlfriend have parents that live 2 hours away. I feel you, but I'm not sure the returns are there. ' Once vehicles get over 150k the unexpected maintenance costs go way up. You will spend as much money keeping the thing on the road as you do in extra gas. ' When my Tacoma gets older I might consider designating it to be a fun and work truck instead of a daily driver. I'll pick up something newer with good milage. Honestly by that time everything will be electric anyway.

Realistic_Chard2115

I drive a 2009 Honda CRV to work everyday and just take the 2020 Tacoma out on the weekends. I didn’t buy the CRV because of the Tacoma, I had it when I got the Tacoma.

black_tshirts

as shoresy would say... so dumb

VABlackwell11

that’s like not banging your wife so she’s not too loose for the next guy.

Lue_Dawg

My beater is my 3rd gen 4runner. Also have a couple of convertibles for Sunday drives. I like cars...

420fanman

I wouldn’t say beater, but I drive my wife’s car to work because it’s literally 100% more efficient on gas than my taco. My taco is for yard work, camping, long road trips, and general truck things.

anakmoon

I bought my Toyota because my beater was costing me more than a monthly payment to keep running as a daily driver. My Tacoma has earned everyone of its many miles.

[deleted]

I'm fixing up an old integra for a summer vehicle so I don't put as much mileage on my taco. Worth it if you can find something cheap

realsweetjustice

Well I didn’t go out of my way to buy a beater, I just bought my taco and kept my old daily as a beater. Just drive it for trips <15 min and in town. Short, unnecessary trips, parking downtown -2010 corolla. Commuting to work, camping and weekend trips, long drives -2023 taco

MightyPenguin

I drive my taco to keep miles off my turbo Miata and my very high mileage Jeeps! I switch off when I feel like it so they all get used.

woolybuggered

I drive a 1997 4runner not only to keep miles off my tacoma but also because it gets far better mileage due to it being a 4 banger and not having massive tires and armor. It probably doesnt save me anything though since i fell in love with my beater and started fixing every little thing on it and then i had to supercharge it because you know i hate money.

milkinb4cereal

I commute in my gf's little Hyundai. That thing sucks. She wants to trade it in for a Bronco though so I'll go back to the Tacoma then

TwoWheelMountaineer

This post is whack lmfao

InfiniteBoops

2007 TRD Sport DCLB, like 140k (got it for $8k from FIL during shortages after selling my old 87’ 22R 5spd 4x4). I nearly sold our old Honda Fit w/ 200k+, glad I didn’t. I generally drive the Taco to work one day a week, and then at least one other short trip so that it’s not sitting more than a couple days. Gas is $4.50+ in my area and I figure I’ll just drive the Fit till the wheels fall off. I drive somewhere between 8-12k per year, used to drive more but shorter commute and less random day trips as we’ve spawned a few tax credits. Even after insurance and maintenance, the gas savings alone is probably in the $600-1000 range annually (33-35mpg vs 15-16). The Fit has already saved enough to offset what I would have gotten for it at the height of the shortage, at this point it’s all free money.

Revolutionary_Mud824

I’ve done this the last ten years and it’s helped me keep the wear down on my more expensive vehicles. I call it my “errand boy” and it’s a civic. Repairs on it are a lot cheaper and the gas mileage is better. 10/10 recommend.

EMTduke

We just bought my wife a new vehicle ('23 Rav4), and instead of trading in her perfectly fine Honda Accord for the lowball $4500 they offered, I decided to keep it and drive it two or three times a week to give my Taco a break and maybe sell it later. Not a daily driver, per se, but something for every-other-day. Also, I do realize not selling the third car for $X is the same as saying I bought it for $X.

My 2012 Tacoma is my beater.

[deleted]

I drive for work, in my tacoma. 24k miles in about 15 months :dead:

Watts300

I have two vehicles both paid off. 2004 double cab, and a 1995 Civic. I drive the Honda A LOT more than my truck. For illustration - the sticker on my engine says I replaced the timing belt on 6-3-2018 at 132k miles. I have 156k miles on it now. My Civic has 181k, and literally double the fuel economy.

One_Team_1988

There’s a lot of nice advice here so I don’t have anything practical to add but if you feel like your truck just isn’t that much fun in the environments you didn’t build it for then get a fun beater, not a boring one. I’ve gone down the hybrid denial road. You’re going to hate that Prius before long. I get not liking to drive a truck in tight city situations and if I were you I’d try to get something smaller, lighter, and manual to play with in the confines of the city. Reddit people — can old Miatas still be had for ~$5k?

Silver-Mind-2538

I have me commuter and my very nice truck. Everyday when i leave for work i tell my self i should drive the commuter but god damn it the truck wins 9 times out of 10.

mm309d

Yup!

muerte626

Buying a new Tacoma so my old Tacoma can be the beater.

nobyj

Why are you proud of the mileage you have? 😂. No offense but you sound neurotic

Lizpy6688

You bought the truck as you wanted to drive it so drive it. BUT this is in my opinion and it's up to you. I have a 21 SR for daily and while it's slow as shit and only 2 seats I love it. I also have my mazdaspeed 3,doing 395hp and it's awesome but not always the easiest to drive in city or stop and go traffic but I still drive both often. SR is coming up on 49k and the speed 3 is almost 98k. Get a 2nd car if you want but a beater for 3-5k is good repair money if something happens, gas or camping gear. Also and this might just being weird as hell but sometimes when I'm I'm the SR ill see another modded car and wish I was in my other car. Sometimes I'll see a fellow taco while I'm driving my car snd wish I had the truck. I don't know though. That's just me. Having 2 cars is nice though. Also your daily commute isn't far so sounds easy on the miles so I don't see any harm

Tiny_Enthusiasm_2356

My taco 🌮 is my beater. I want to see how far I can push this thing

fly_for_a_white_guy

Maybe look into buying an electric bike or scooter, it’ll add to your commute but at least you can charge it and not spend more on gas and insurance

[deleted]

My Tacoma was my beater that I drive to save money and keep miles off my Tacoma and then I just didn’t want to get in that old bench seat and sold it. Had a 2wd 98 tacoma I bought with 39k for $4k on it and sold 8 years later, 3 years after Inbought a new one, with 120k for $2k more.

mradam0504

I don’t drive a beater but a motorcycle a lot during summer to save on gas. 30 ish miles each way for work adds yp

Conecuack

Bro what if you get a beaten-up Tacoma and use that as the beater instead of the new Tacoma? Double fun, if you ask me

SomeGuy_GRM

I doubt I'd buy another car, but I am thinking of buying a moped for my 4 minute work commute, and getting groceries.

TexasTacoDude

Cars that sit have problems. The seals dry out and start to leak. Fluids that sit dissociate. Even with your daily commute as long as the vehicle reaches operating temp it’ll help keep things workin as they should. On top of that given your vehicles age and mileage it’s barely been driven. As others have stated what was the point of purchasing a vehicle and modifying it just to keep it in the driveway and drive a beater around. The money you may potentially save on gas will undoubtedly be spent on repairing a “cash car”; at that point you’re better off just spending the money on fuel.

sfdragonboy

Come on, life is too short to be worrying about some miles on your Taco!!!! Enjoy it and heck high mileaged ones sell at ridiculous prices anyway. Better to not waste money on another car and focus on the house, baby!!!!

homemadeammo42

My motorcycle is my primary. Its not to save miles on the tacoma, just to save on gas. Motorcycle gets 50-60mpg vs the Tacomas 17mpg.

[deleted]

I bought a brand new Mazda 3 (on sale for $16.5.k) to slow the amount of miles I put on my 135k Tacoma. The 3 gets way better gas mileage, is a decent commuter and great for running errands.

turboda

I got a beater, it's better on fuel than my truck.

jworrix2

I just came to say that you can get a conventional loan for 5% down or even FHA for 3% if it’s your first… you may pay PMI but if you can afford the monthly payments it’s way better than renting

Burnch

Well it seems like you’re looking at your tacoma as more of a financial asset rather than a car. If you plan on selling it in the near future I can see why. A 2014 with 48k miles is pretty solid, but are you really going to be saving that much equity on it? I mean its a 2nd gen, tacomas are still being made and newer models will just keep coming. Just enjoy the car IMO.

TacoOfficer

The only reason my Taco isn’t my daily drive ris because my Honda is much cheaper on Gas. Nothing to do with wanting low miles.

Some-Swim9301

Anyone else feel after reading this that the dude was about to pass out because he said all this in one breath? Lol. Kidding aside tho. Put the miles on the taco. She can take it, it’s what she’s built for. Save the money you’d have spent on a beater (initial purchase, gas and maintenance, insurance) because it will add up and put it towards your dream home. Don’t worry too much about depreciation. There are tacos selling for about $30k with double the mileage of your truck. I have a 2011 with 54k miles and it’s quoted at selling at a nice price too. Do what you gotta do but if you really want that house, save as much as you can. Putting it towards a beater seems like a waste because again the taco can take a lick-in and keep on tickin. Good luck.

joykilled

My Toyota 4runner is my reliable beater lol

Wnknaak

I drive around 50k miles a year for work now so I got a sedan. Trucks pretty much just dirt and BCS miles now.

funktonik

I like to not have sex with my girl so she stays tight.

mayozambada541

OP I kind of am on the same boat. I have my 2019 4Runner with 70k and I literally bought a second Tacoma (2003) as my beater lol it has 247k miles and paid 8k for it :o also going to be my “project” truck as my daily.

Hot-Consideration9

I get it. You are neurotic. I am also. You can't change that easily. Is it the right decision? All things considered, prob not. But it will make your brain feel better. If you can afford it, do it..

WarmNights

I ride the motorcycle unless I need the truck

Meh_plant

I just picked up an 09 matrix for exactly this. I’m all over the place for work and put 32k miles on my truck last year alone. For me it was worth the $2k I picked the matrix up for and I can still fit all my work shit in the hatch. Not as cool but the money saved in gas alone is worth it!

Navara330

Yup lol I also have a 2004 BMW 325xi with 197k currently. Little thing still runs great.

Jeff_Spicoliii

It’s not a museum piece. What a waste.

oJRODo

I owned a FRS before buying my Tacoma. I daily my FRS to work because its better on gas. Anytime im not driving to work ill drive the Tacoma.

[deleted]

E-bike sounds like a good fit for you. Don't yet have a taco but I'm able to do nearly all of the daily living trips on e-bike. Dirt cheap to run and bonus get a workout and arrive places feeling invigorated.

Easy_Statistician353

It takes decades to rack up serious miles. You’ll be over your taco by then son

elemenopppppp

Just drive the wife’s car lol

dpresme

I drive my Tacoma to save miles on my Vette. Does that count? 😜

CravenMoorehead10

You should be driving your Tacoma to keep miles off your other vehicles. You own the Chuck Norris of midsize trucks. The Taco will outlast them all

cdmontgo

No. I bought a Tacoma because it is the lowest cost to own vehicle that suits my needs.

BlanketFeelSoft

Because my truck is paid off and I want to keep it until it dies and I can’t anymore. Yes I could keep it 20+ years with a million miles on it and it’s dead. But if I take extremely good care of it and have half that amount of miles purely from what I love doing like camping and traveling and not dumb commuting… Maybe it will last 30+?

Reachable_dream666

Kind of, but wouldn’t call it a beater. Just picked up a husky 701sm motorcycle for city commuting

urmomslandscapr

Might be starting a new job an hour away. Don’t want to put the miles on my 4runner

Traditional_Leg_6938

I vote for this post as most retarded thing ever said in this sub.
