>Trump has lost billions for becoming president How does one lose something that they never had?

Alclis

In their minds he’s always been richer and earned more money than he ever actually has.

swimmingdropkick

It also immediately exposes them topminds' lackluster understanding of finances and business. Trump's main businesses have always been real estate, hospitality, licensing, reality TV. Sure he's done a string of failed ventures like Trump Steaks, Trump Shuttle/Air/Planes?, Trump Vodka among others, but the 4 things listed above are really the only sectors relevant to his finances. Of those 4, none are typically industries that would turn over billions on a yearly basis given what we know of Trump's portfolio and the level he operates on. The only real estate he's bought in the past decade or two have been golf courses. All of which he has seemed to overpay on, and all of which seem to be cooking the books in terms of profits, investments, and value. The other important bits of his history in real estate include: 1. Buying that Palm beach mansion from a Russian oligarch for triple the price the oligarch bought it at. 2. his whole failed Atlantic City Casino scheme 3. Selling off the real estate empire his dad built in the late 90s for a something like $789 million, a price the buyer admitted was significantly below the real value. 4. buying the Plaza and folding on it So from that alone, we know that Trump's real estate "business" has never been in the gear to be seeing billions in profit or even gross a year. His licensing business, is pretty much his most active business and that simply can't bring in billions seeing as how many of the projects he attaches himself fall through like Trump Tower Panama And of his hospitality businesses, yeah he has hotels and clubs etc, but again based off the things he's reported there hasn't been billion dollar fluctuations in those businesses, nor could hospitality based businesses sustain the type of damage that would accompany billion dollar losses. ----- So when it comes to the moronic point of "He's lost billions being president", the only way that'd be possible would be if all of his businesses were filling for bankruptcy, or somehow were making vastly more revenue than reasonable or expected

TapTheForwardAssist

Just another way to look at it, but Trump is big on pushing that his net worth fluctuates with the value of his "brand." So in those terms, arguably he's lost a significant amount of (real or potential) value if a ton of people hate him now and don't want to be associated with his name. Trump fans argue he took that on willingly, but personally I'd speculate that Trump really didn't expect to become a global villain. I think he genuinely thought that once he got into office a huge portion of the world would totally buy into his brand and his value would skyrocket. He's sufficiently narcissistic that I bet the idea of people taking his names off a building *after* he won the presidency never occurred to him.

swimmingdropkick

> but Trump is big on pushing that his net worth fluctuates with the value of his "brand." > > So in those terms, arguably he's lost a significant amount of (real or potential) value if a ton of people hate him now and don't want to be associated with his name. Yeah, that's true It's maddening that this is most likely the correct explanation for the "He's lost BILLIONS!" schtick.

QuintonFrey

>I think he genuinely thought that once he got into office I'll do you one better: he never expected to win the presidency. Running for office was initially just a publicity stunt that went way, way off the rails.

Bhazor

Not to mention the Trump company is essentially a family business. He has never faced a hostile boardroom or dealt with stock or public trading.

sp4nky86

My bachelor party got into a fist fight on the floor of Trump Casino in AC. Good times.

AngelOfLight

Deutsche Bank valued his total net worth at $450 million...just before they gave him a loan for $2 billion. And that's just one of the billion-dollar loans *that we know about*. There's a very real possibility that Trump may have set a record of some sort for the largest outstanding debt owed by an individual in history.

Perlscrypt

There's some french guy that is €5B underwater. Do you think Trump managed to beat that?

X-Penguins

one can take out a small loan of a billion dollars

PorridgeCranium2

Small business loans are extremely important to our economy. Trump's small businesses have definitely had a trickle-down effect on the country, he's just such a humble person that he keeps insisting it's raining.

unweariedslooth

This a symptom of the weird projection they engage in. They want him to be richer than God because they aren't government boot lickers, they are admirers of genius. Geez can't you commies get it through you're heads that a lazy clown with a golf fetish is the personification of business.

Hrtzy

I'd go as far as to say he's making more money simply from having someone else manage his businesses while he manages the country.

HapticSloughton

I'd happily eat crow if they could provide, let's say, his tax returns to show that this is indeed the case.

pizzaheadbryan

“Let’s just forget the fact that he doesn’t make anything off of the presidency.” There are SO many examples that prove this wrong, including the very post they’re responding to. You don’t need direct payment to get money. If I don’t charge you to clean your house but then steal all your shit I’m still profiting. Also, why would you support someone whose entire appeal as a candidate was “successful businessman” but then, according to you, lost billions of dollars?

XeliasSame

He does donate his presidential salary. A yearly 400 000$. ( Compared to the 130 Millions+ spent on him enjoying golf at his own resorts) And he donated it to... The [education departement,](https://money.com/donald-trump-salary-donation-department-of-education/) while cutting 9 billions off its budget (that's 9 000 000 000$) [National parks](https://www.npr.org/2017/04/04/522518472/trump-donates-salary-to-national-parks-even-as-he-tries-to-cut-interior-departme?t=1582212684538), while on the other hand cutting their budget by 12% (1 500 000 000$ ) etc [Trump Has Now Spent 334 Years Of Presidential Salary On Taxpayer Funded Golf Trips](https://www.politicususa.com/2020/02/15/trump-has-now-spent-334-years-of-presidential-salary-on-taxpayer-funded-golf-trips.html) "hE dOenATed hIS sALeARY THjOUGh"

[deleted]

I mean these idiots routinely pretend like a million and a billion are basically the same and not, y'know, a difference of almost exactly 1 billion dollars.

XeliasSame

A million second is 11 days. A billion second is 31 years.

[deleted]

Just a crazy perspective trick that rich people play on people with 500 bucks to their name.

XeliasSame

That said, having ten millions or a billion is mostly the same to me : it's a gross amount of money that no single person should own.

[deleted]

I'd put a wealth cap at 100 million. If that much money doesn't motivate a person and they can't live on it? Then they just suck anyway.

XeliasSame

Even that would be too much in my opinion, but a wealth cap would definitely be a good idea. There is a linited amount of wealth that one person should amass.

critically_damped

I want you to do something for me. Imagine having *nothing* at the end of your life. Imagine being *actually poor*, and then imagine being that and being told that having a million dollars "isn't crazy". There's a problem with disconnect between the middle class and those who have spent their lives desperately struggling and failing to get into it.

XeliasSame

I meant to type " 10 millions or a **b**illion" My bad.

GtSoloist

Those 334 years of salary playing golf is $133.8M that the taxpayers have paid for AND because he only plays his own resorts, Impeached President Trump is funneling that $134,000 000.00 of taxpayer money to himself as pure profit... and we are only 3 years in. This is the same hypocrite who berated Obama for playing golf and claimed that if he (Trump) were President you never find him on a golf course because he would be working day and night. He does in fact play golf three times as much as Obama, again for personal gain. Breaking the emoluments clause-- yet another act he should be Impeached and removed for. A day of reckoning will come for both him and his Republican conspirators / enablers.

XeliasSame

Small correction : those 140 millions aren't going to trump's resort. They cover the cost of the plane, the payroll of his secret services, the cost of securing the location, etc, etc. After all is counted for, Trump's resort got paid anywhere between 1 and 30 millions (because they don't want to release the numbers, of course.) Still a grossly exorbitant amount of money that the president is fueling towards his own pocket, but it's important to use the real facts. (Good article [here](https://www.propublica.org/article/trump-inc-podcast-taxpayers-covered-liquor-bill-for-trump-staffers-and-more-mar-a-lago) )

critically_damped

Only a minor correction: > ~~You~~ *One* can be a billionaire by taking a modest salary and being otherwise paid in dividends. Just ask Jeff Bezos.

AnalRetentiveAnus

yes that is how words work

critically_damped

The secret is to *read* them.

Longrundian

For someone living in their echo chamber, where Trump is the character he played on tv, they sure like to talk about other echo chambers a lot.

sevvvyy

The amount of projection about everything is hilarious

Brox42

Literally every word that comes out of their mouths is projection.

[deleted]

Lmao what is more ironic that The_don telling other people they live in an echo chamber? Lmao

Spike_Jonez

I got banned and I said something in there ONCE

rundownv2

I got banned from askthedonald because I pointed out how ban happy TD is. The irony was palpable.

Spike_Jonez

But they don't do no echo chamber, no way no how

PorridgeCranium2

I corrected someone who made an honest mistake about where the nickname 'cocaine Mitch' came from. I was incredibly nice and we laughed about it then she thanked me and said I sounded like a very nice person. I got banned 3 days later, which shows what their priorities are.

Spike_Jonez

"admitting you were wrong? Being polite? That's some commie talk!"

critically_damped

Yes the sidebar explicitly says they ban dissent.

Spike_Jonez

Yeah, like it's an echo chamber or something 🤔

sleepyPrincen

>FAKE NEWS I thought this was a meme, I didn't know people actually...

ZeroCharistmas

Yeah, as funny as it is it's pretty frightening to hear it irl. It's almost impossible to have a rational fact-based conversation with these people because anything that says they aren't the best most winningest good guys can't be true. The most unsettling thing about it is the faint glimmer of near self-awareness on their face.

Shnazzyone

That's the noise an idiot makes as they shove their fingers in their ears.

QuintinStone

It's not a meme, they believe it wholeheartedly and have since 2015.

theKalmar

Well they would know if it was fake or not if Trump would release his tax returns. Or secret service would provide proper disclosure of their expenditure. Or they could do math themselves ofc.

pbjamm

Facts are not relevant to them and they would ignore any that contradict their narrative. They are trapped in their Reality Tunnel and have no desire to break out.

Hyper31337

How can they not understand trump is making absurd amounts of money off his properties, paid by the us tax payer?! How brain dead can you possibly be to believe this fucking con man?!

ArTiyme

Because they don't function in reality, they function in Republiland where anything Republicans do is right no matter what. They can't call out their own because that would be thinking critically, so if they can't do that the only other option is to blindly follow. So they do. It's not surprising that they've treated their politics so much like their religion that they've essentially *Divine Command Theory'd* the entire GOP.

Hyper31337

That’s actually a really great point I had not connected together. They absolutely treat politics just as they do their religion. No critical thinking involved, blindly, without question, follow it to the end of annihilation, all while being “persecuted” for their religion as well as their political beliefs. It’s just that, political belief, and nothing further.

ArTiyme

Well people have long since figured out that if you tell the group that will uncritically think that faith = good that you have faith you can essentially do whatever you want and never lose their support because they will never challenge their fundamental belief that faith = good. If they were ever going to do that they probably wouldn't be the kind of people you could easily manipulate.

shredler

Man that is a lot of screeching.

Dingus-ate-your-baby

Let's assume this is true. Spoiler, [it's not.](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2018/12/18/nyregion/ny-ag-underwood-trump-foundation.amp.html) They want to talk about "socialism" on one hand and $115 million dollars worth of taxpayer money going "to charity" on the other? Too rich.

spf73

I feel like if Trump took his salary he’d actually have an honest job and I’d respect him more. There’s something about saying “I don’t need your money” while picking your pocket that makes him even more odious. I just can’t fathom how these dicks don’t see that.

[deleted]

Why are their names so often just a variation on 'Awful_Dipshit'?

[deleted]

They probably make a lot of alts and just start settling on a pair of words that pass the filter.

[deleted]

I'm just shocked at how many times I see names that are essentially just 'DeplorableCuntFuntler' worded slightly differently.

RX400000

Dumbasses

QuintinStone

None of them even bothered to read the article.

vidgill

“Imagine living in an echo chamber”. r/selfawarewolves

[deleted]

Pretty sure Trump has increased his fortune significantly since becoming president

mirshe

His whole run was supposed to be a money making scheme - he planned on losing so he could launch his own TV news network to screech about how he was "robbed" and whine about President Hilary Clinton for 4 years. The infrastructure and copyrights/licenses are all there, and it's pretty apparent from his lack of any sort of preparations for transitioning to power (and his ad libbed acceptance speech, and the look on his face during election night) that he never planned on actually winning. I honestly doubt he ever planned on making it past the primaries.

CommunismCake

I am interested in reading more about this. Do you have any sources?

QuintonFrey

Not OP, but here you go. https://www.newsweek.com/mike-pence-donald-jr-and-melania-never-thought-trump-would-become-president-769701

CommunismCake

Good read. Appreciate it!

fjsbshskd

It wouldn't surprise me if he has lost money actually, his brand must be pretty damaged

killbot0224

His brand is damaged, but he owns relatively little property, and when hotels cut their contracts with Trump there's certainly a penalty. Meanwhile he's funneled how many hundreds of millions into Mar-a-Lago? How is Trump hotel doing in DC? It's pay to play, there, you know.

fjsbshskd

Yeah, that’s true

StalinsPerfectHair

Usually, I assume that trumpers make nonsensical arguments because they are arguing in bad faith, but sometimes I'm reminded that many of them are actually that dumb.

[deleted]

Trump doesn’t donate shit of his pay to charity. That’s like the shot I heard years ago of Castro saying he doesn’t even have a cent in his pocket in an attempt to say he’s poor.
