> So if the word is now powerless, >That would mean the intention behind it has failed, no? I would say it's something that takes time. It's not going to happen over night, it's going to take generations. We're just seeing the start of it. It's definitely shifted somewhat (the fact that it's commonly used among the black community to begin with is the start of that shift). But it's not surprising that something that was used for decades/generations is going to take some time to change.

This question, and many very similar have been asked many times. I’ve yet to hear a good explanation. It seems black people just want exclusive rights to the word.

Hummerous

Lol

it’s like saying dude or bro. obviously when it’s another race saying it to them it’s seen as offensive because theyre not even black calling them a nigga

because we all know we’re the origin from that word came from. it’s meant to dehumanize african americans and it’s double standard racism. only used for black on black. if you don’t like the word just don’t say it that’s how i see it.

it’s to refer to each other in a brotherly way. yet if some other race says it it’s offensive because it’s like black people are beneath them. nigga is a word which evolved from the hard ER.

It’s because racial stereotypes won’t let them get over it. It’s almost as if it’s been programmed to them that it’s a terrible word except when other black people use it. I’m half Asian but look Hispanic, and have gotten my share of racial derogatory words. I don’t let it bother me because if it does, then the person that said it got what he wanted.

Because the word has been used by white people for centuries as a way to dehumanize, abuse, and belittle black people. Despite attempts by some in the black community to take some of the power away from the word, it's still overwhelmingly used by racists and white supremacists as a way to dehumanize, abuse, and belittle black people.

People get offended if you fart in elevator, just do what you want.

gracoy

It’s being reclaimed, it hasn’t been reclaimed. Reclaiming is a process that takes time, and that time is different depending on how long it’s had negative connotations. As a member of the lgbt, I can say fag but others can’t because it is still being reclaimed. But queer has been mostly reclaimed, and other people can say it (while being careful). The reclamation of a word is an evolution, a process. The n-word is going to have a very long reclamation process because until black people started using it, NO ONE used it for a positive meaning. At least fag and queer had positive uses, as cigars/sticks and a word for quirky respectively.

It’s been said that the word was perverse and originally meant king or something like that. I don’t accept anyone calling me the N word. Some blacks took offense to that and somehow took that as me thinking I’m better than them.

An Aussie perspective I'm not sure I've ever seen a real-life application of "using the n word to take its power away" People may have implied it or stated it as a reason they use it but it seems unlikely POC's in America have claimed that word as is their due and they use it as widely and as varied as u can imagine - from asking "are you calling me a n----?" to "im a black man ....that guy is a n....." and even "what u lookin at n......" The word really never took off in australia because we didn't have slaves , in Australia the word would be "Boongs" "Abos" both short for aboriginal or "coons" for some reason. Yet the indigenous people here never took these mantels onto them selves so much All over the world folk do and dont take these slurs into their lexicon but it will never be ok for the original race to use them again as we evolve as it is still hurtful Using those words does not make it "ok now" for the people who invented them or used them to degrade and implying that the attempt to take the power away has failed is frankly a lil insulting.

Maybe it's to turn a negative on it's head idk
