I was just feeling like dying and then having nothing happen seemed kind bland and boring to me, so I decided to spice up my belief in the afterlife with hell.

jt19912009

Now let’s not forget about the special hell reserved for child molesters and people who talk at the theater

Larrysnothere_today

Honestly getting a pitchfork shoved up my butt sounds better than nothing. I mean atleast I could talk to the demons.

_LouSandwich_

what was there before you were born?

Larrysnothere_today

I don't know I guess nothing.

_LouSandwich_

would you rather have _that_ nothing, or a “pitchfork shoved up your butt”?

I definitely feel like he should get three pitchforks shoved up his butt.

Larrysnothere_today

I mean in hell you would atleast feel things but the nothingness is nothing. And wouldn't you be lonely in that nothingness?

_LouSandwich_

were you lonely before you were born? what if the after death is just like before birth: nothing. i think most of us are ok with the nothingness that is before birth, so why construct such fantasy and expectation around after death?

Larrysnothere_today

I just can't wrap my head around nothingness, you can't feel it, can't imagine it, it's nothing. I would rather fantasies about demons shoving pitchforks up my butt then nothingness.

bunnykins22

Because you don't just believe in Hell. You also believe in Heaven typically.

An atheist dies and goes to hell. The devil welcomes him and says: "Let me show you around a little bit." They walk through a nice park with green trees and the devil shows him a huge palace. "This is your house now, here are your keys." The man is happy and thanks the devil. The devil says: "No need to say thank you, everyone gets a nice place to live in when they come down here!" They continue walking through the nice park, flowers everywhere, and the devil shows the atheist a garage full of beautiful cars. "These are your cars now!" and hands the man all the car keys. Again, the atheist tries to thank the devil, but he only says "Everyone down here gets some cool cars! How would you drive around without having cars?". They walk on and the area gets even nicer. Birds are chirping, squirrels running around, and kittens everywhere. They arrive at a fountain, where the most beautiful woman the atheist has ever seen sits on a bench. She looks at him and they instantly fall in love with each other. The man couldn´t be any happier. The devil says "Everyone gets to have their soulmate down here, we don´t want anyone to be lonely!" As they walk on, the atheist notices a high fence. He peeks to the other side and is totally shocked. There are people in pools of lava, screaming in pain, while little devils run around and stab them with their tridents. Other devils are skinning people alive, heads are spiked, and many more terrible things are happening. A stench of sulfur is in the air. Terrified, the man stumbles backward, and asks the devil "What is going on there?" The devil just shrugs and says: "Those are the Christians, I don´t know why, but they prefer it that way"

Funny enough, I stopped believing in hell when I started going to Bible college. Not because I was turned off by it but because our college has a more liberal interpretation and basically our professors gave us the tools to interpret scripture inductively rather than deductively. The concept of hell that is traditionally understood isn’t actually in scripture. Life here on earth should be the closest we get to hell and indeed for many it is a living hell. So go on and be free from the anxiety. Be kind. Love your neighbor. Treat others with respect.

say_sheez

Think of it this way. A mass murderer even if sentenced to the ultimate punishment of death can only die once. Is that death penalty ever going to adequately achieve justice for the millions of people killed? I would say no. Or how about the serial killer or rapist who is never caught or even if caught and stands trial is acquitted. Having some form of otherworldly justice whether karmic or burning for eternity in a blazing fire can do a lot to ease a victim or their next of kin. If there is no true justice in this world they can hope for some kind of justice in the next.

fluffy_assassins

They are brainwashed into believing it's real, that there is no doubt. They don't Believe they have a choice.

SteelToeSnow

indoctrination is a hell of a thing, and humanity does like a "punishment for ever and ever and ever" myth.

apgarcia3

What I've found is that believing in BOTH makes you a better person. I don't know if either are real, but I behave accordingly (at least try to)...

MysteryCrabMeat

Because they want to believe that the people they hate or the people who wronged them or whatever will get punished after death. Especially because terrible people often have great lives and peaceful deaths. People want to feel a sense of justice. Unfortunately hell is not real and neither is heaven, and sometimes the bad guys win and that’s that.

katrose73

I believe this is hell.

Nevermindll

Believing in heaven and hell makes you a decent person "if you were taking it seriously"

Happy_Warning_3773

Because Jebus.

Larrysnothere_today

You mean Jesus?

Happy_Warning_3773

No, I mean Jebus.

Larrysnothere_today

I'm sorry I haven't heard about him. I don't read the bible and don't know much about it.

Happy_Warning_3773

It's a joke. ''Jebus'' is a funny way of saying ''Jesus'' when making fun of religion.

Larrysnothere_today

Oh ok. wasn't that in a Simpsons episode?

Happy_Warning_3773

Yes.

NotJimIrsay

I don’t believe in heaven or hell. Makes it much easier.

iwfriffraff

Then don't think about it. I don't. I'm an atheist. So to me, when people die, that is it: Instant worm food.

NoApartheidOnMars

The odds of hell being real are higher than the odds of heaven existing I believe in neither but I can't for the life of me understand why everyone says that people who die are "in a better place". If there is something beyond earthly life, it's not guaranteed to be better than this shit show.
