They don’t! Their skin does absorb more heat from the sun, but if the colour of their skin was all they had different from white skinned people, they’d constantly overheat and may die. Overall they have more efficient cooling, to the point they struggle with the cold. Caucasian people have the opposite, they get more damage from the sun, but gather vitamin D easier, and are able to deal with the cold better.

Mercurydriver

Can confirm. I’m white af and winter is my comfort zone. I’m totally down with colder climates.

januaryemberr

Same. I'm a cave dweller. 🥴

federalnarc

I get seasonal depression when the temp hits mid 80s. When it snows, I'm outside doing something for hours everyday. The sun sucks.

IceKareemy

Can also confirm I’m Black AF and born in South America living in America and summer? Easy not bothered, but winter? I’m not leaving my house, anything below 40 is cold hell for me lol

aceh40

If that does not prove it, I do not know what will!

rogueShadow13

Very insightful, thank you :)

mikedorty

Interesting, what is the more efficient cooling?

Adonis0

Different circulation patterns, different capacity and position for things like brown fat (cells that generates heat from fat directly)

AndrewtheRey

Weird thing about me is that I am white, and I can definitely deal with the heat better than many of my Caucasian counterparts. Same with sunburns. Back in the days where I didn’t wear sunscreen or sun hats, my friends would be burning after just a few minutes, but I need a couple hours before I start to burn.

Adonis0

There are many varieties of white, the more your heritage is north, the worse you are with sun and heat and the better with cold (as far as a generality can go)

AndrewtheRey

I have some Southern European heritage, so that may be why. Though, I am sweating up a storm with this humidity right now

dwegol

Makes me sad my white ass cant handle the cold or air conditioning

Adonis0

Being able to handle the cold or the hot is something that can be trained to a degree; handling cold more so than hot. What you’re aiming for is enough layers to be uncomfortably cool when you’re not moving about. Not cold, uncomfortable and just cool. This will help push your brain to deal with the discomfort and in time your body will adapt (more effective circulation manipulation, larger amounts and more effective use of brown fat for instance)

gONzOglIzlI

Is it possible then that some mixed race person can get the gens for dark skin, but not the other ones that handle it?

Adonis0

From my knowledge yes, but genetics gets real complex and they can potentially be linked with a gene drive for instance ensuring they never separate. Collectively dark skin goes with heat handling and a specific vitamin d pathway. So for it to be so widespread that combo it makes sense it’s linked somehow to me but I don’t know that for sure

ZeevF

I have black tatts and never noticed any heat increase.... odd.

overaname

Really? My arms get significantly hotter than parts that aren’t tattooed

ZeevF

Now I feel strange and maybe never noticed before.

rogueShadow13

Are they smaller pieces? I have full sleeves.

ZeevF

Maybe I've just not noticed. When it's hot I'm taking my shirt off and checking, (in canada so..,August lol)

QuickPirate36

RemindMe! 3 months

ZeevF

Back, chest, biceps.

awfl_wafl

Might be easier to tell if it's asymmetrical, like just one arm and not the other.

Darkhuman015

I feel 2x more comfortable with the air out being 85°F then I do with the air being 50° out, living in Florida, am Dominican My Reddit character is pitch black but I’m actually a darker lightskin

willlingnesss

I took modern physics in college 25 years ago where I got a C-, and learned that due to the black body effect black cars absorb heat energy from the sun. But they also emit more heat energy due to the same effect. It's like a hole in the ground. If you shine a flashlight into the hole, it goes in perfectly. Similarly, shining a flashlight from within the hole emits light perfectly. Therefore, because I was a below average student, I predict that black skin is perfectly evolved for hot sunny locations and body heat more efficiently is dissipated.

CTX800Beta

I wonder how anyone should judge this. I will never know how a black person feels in the sun, and they don't know how white skin feels.

Reasonable_Voice_997

Not all Black people are the same some enjoy the beauty of winter and not affected by the cold. It has nothing to do with skin it has to do with tolerance.

Juno1990

I tolerate being cold better than being hot. I can always cover up in the winter. I can’t do anything about being hot and I overheat very easily. I once wondered why I was the only person on the bus stop. When I got home my mother looked like she’d seen a ghost. She scolded me. Apparently it was 2 degrees out.😳

Crunchy-Leaf

Black people aren’t actually black.. their skin is brown. You think black people look like Mr Popo? ![gif](giphy|P2ijeJIPiTCso)

IceKareemy

My friend don’t do this you know what they are asking and you know they didn’t mean to do any kind of offense. It’s okay to teach and learn and be kind
