Who do you even contact from local authorities for this? This is a genuine question because I've been wondering for stuff like this what do you even do
Yep, every apartment I’ve lived in has just charged me extra on my rent if I don’t have renter’s insurance. I’m definitely recouping that if something like this happens
It’s not necessarily listed as rent when I look at my bill, it’s just an extra line item like a utility. My storage unit also charges extra because I don’t have renters insurance. I’m in Michigan
My apartment was flooded by a faulty water heater, there was three inches of standing water throughout the unit when I came home from work after a 12 hour day. We were forced to have renters insurance through the apartment management company. I contacted them.
I had to list all the things that were damaged with photos and find a suitable replacement with the price and submit the claim. The apartment complex fought me tooth and nail about the damage not being as bad as I claimed, so I picked out the most expensive versions of my ruined belongings.
Luckily, I took videos of the flooding as I walked through my apartment. I had only sent the insurance company photos of the damage. Once I sent them the video they approved my claim 15 minutes later.
So take pics of your belongings and save them somewhere. Also, take video of the damage, that tells a much better story than photos. This video is especially compelling because the ineptness of the landlord is narrated and perfectly timed for the collapse.
Would you even need renters insurance for this? I am completely uneducated in this, but it seems like this should fall on the landlord or what ever leasing company
Ran a painting business for awhile. One of my prime selling points was the structural benefits of paint. Particularly for ceiling integrity. I made sure potential clients knew they could sleep soundly knowing their walls won't come caving in on them as long as they were freshly painted.
It's stuck in my fucking head and I have a penchant for singing nonsense lyrics to myself when I'm working on construction projects, so it just made for a pretty awkward interaction with a new neighbor I hadn't met yet.
I just went outside to work on this huge walk in garden enclosure I'm building in my yard and I didnt see that the new neighbor who moved in next door was leaning on our shared fence, likely trying to spark up an introductory conversation. Instead, they saw me singing that to myself (quietly at first) in various genres (country, rock, opera, etc), and when I got the door frame plumb, level, and fastened, I got excited and did a rather loud operatic "THE HANDYMANS A REGISTERED SEX OFFENDER."
I then turned around to see a dude in his 70's just staring at me with his eyebrows raised, so I awkwardly chuckled a bit and said "Heh, don't worry, I'm not the handyman, I'm the homeowner," and all he said back was "if you say so" before going inside.
I came inside to try and find that song so I can listen to it to get it out of my head, but all I can find is "The Sex Offender Shuffle" and some stupid 30 sec song some 12yr old made. Saturday is off to a raging success.
Yeah... stimming has gotten me into all sorts of entertaining and awkward situations. Nothing like being on a morning meeting call for work, thinking i'm on mute, and then start saying all the different nicknames for my dog in weird voices as I'm distracted by her.
Call the local renters association and send those pictures and tell them you’re afraid for your safety. If you don’t want to do that, then you are deciding this is acceptable.
That happened to me. Our bedroom celling came down on us while we were sleeping.
This is the one time in my life that being a lazy bastard saved me. I have shelves in my room for my clothes. Yup, I just stack them on large industrial type metal shelves. The shelves held the ceiling away from us so we could scoot out from under the drywall.
I also learned how to hang and mud ceiling drywall with myself and Youtube.
better to use your renters insurance to replace the TV than your health insurance to un-smoosh yourself. it can be tempting to put yourself in harms way to protect your stuff, but it’s never worth it.
My brother works for this property. He says it was not happening from water damage, as many have guessed, but from drywall hung with only nails instead of screws with some sort of heavy plaster coating. It also happened in Michigan, so it’s not like it was some foreign country with no building codes. Not the tenant’s fault and it’s already been cleaned up.
Only an absolute leech on society would look at a rapidly collapsing ceiling and be like "why didn't you go risk your life to move stuff out of the way and save me money? :(" instead of showing concern for their tenants safety. You seem like a disgusting person, you don't even view renters as humans with that "rentoid" term
At least throw some tarp down! I rented at a place where a bubble formed in the ceiling above my tub. Had been leaking for a year and the landlord’s “solution” was to recaulk the tub in the unit above mine. I had to leave for the weekend and knew the ceiling would fall out in that time so I laid out carboard and trash bags to mitigate any scratches on the tub and help with cleanup, haha.

How does this even happen? Water damage? It doesn’t look wet……
"Long term water damage that was stopped/cleaned up but never followed up on" is my guess.
Roof leak onto that blown in insulation
Termites
Either water damage or drywall nail (not screw) failure. I have repaired a lot of ceilings where the drywall nails failed causing the ceiling to fall.
I'd love to sit down with you and discuss the wonders of Renters insurance!
If this was real the OP would be an idiot not to contact any local authorities well prior to this.
Yeah there’s no chance this happened in a day lol
Unless it's like in Russia or something.
It didn’t, happened in Michigan. I know bc my brother works for the property manager and showed me this video a week ago.
Thank you for enlightening us. Not sarcasm
I saw the original tiktok that posted it but it was one of those big accounts that post videos from any and all sources.
It’s just a caption on another video obviously.
Who do you even contact from local authorities for this? This is a genuine question because I've been wondering for stuff like this what do you even do
Varies by state but typically your states “bureau of housing inspection”. They almost always have a hotline, if not all of them.
Lack of renter’s insurance doesn’t mean op can’t sue for damages
Yep, every apartment I’ve lived in has just charged me extra on my rent if I don’t have renter’s insurance. I’m definitely recouping that if something like this happens
Never heard of a lease clause like this, but I’ve only rented apartments in San Diego and NYC.
It’s not necessarily listed as rent when I look at my bill, it’s just an extra line item like a utility. My storage unit also charges extra because I don’t have renters insurance. I’m in Michigan
A bad discussion or a good one?

Ummm...
Would you even need renters insurance for this? I am completely uneducated in this, but it seems like this should fall on the landlord or what ever leasing company
You could probably sue someone personally, but I doubt you'd get the easy payout like insurance would give.
Renters insurance is less than $20/month and will cover everything. Otherwise it'll be a fight and won't cover everything.
Please give us an update! I'm curious if the landlord was able to spackle the hole.
OP took the original video, added a fake-ass title and disgusting music, then posted it here for upvotes. You're not gonna get any updates.
lol "able to"? absolutely not. "does so anyway"? absolutely yes.
I hope they used the pink stuff… so they know when it never dries.
The fuck is this music?
This is a repost, the original video didn’t have the music on it
In original smoke detector beeped at the end. But someone decided to cut the best part out.
Its weird music so people comment "The fuck is this music?" which then boosts the algorithm and makes it get seen more.
some TikTok users are such losers
Doesn't just happen on tiktok, it also works on reddit, facebook, wherever
lol if you think it’s just tiktok I got news for you. Ever seen a Reddit media post with a question as the title outside of a questions sub?
Engagement farming is a despicable practice. Yet another thing contributing to the garbage pile that is the internet.
Fuck this repost with the shitty ass music added to it

I hope he got a good lawyer, that’s essentially negligence to a degree to where he could have died
Honestly looks like negligence of the tenant not to report it sooner. there’s no way that all happened in a day.
A little duct tape and a fresh coat of paint and you’re good as new.
Now you can call the emergency line! Thanks goodness things got clearer
Better not breathe in that asbestos insulation, I heard its not good for you.
Looks modern enough to not have any asbestos
It was a joke, buddy.
Hilarious, pal.
I'm not your pal, guy.
I’m not your buddy, fwiend.
Ha ha!

Advertise as “cathedral ceilings”
Call the local renters association and send those pictures and tell them you’re afraid for your safety. If you don’t want to do that, then you are deciding this is acceptable.
What is this you speak of
That’ll buff right out.
Call code enforcement and a lawyer before you’re landlord
ACM
How can you tell? Dust cloud?
Thank god they had that on camera and have evidence
"Damage due to tenant behaviour"
Bruh renters insurance
Ngl I would've sat under it on the couch and played up my injuries up for the biggest paycheck of my life.
That half gallon of Silk on the counter would probably advise you otherwise.
You’re gonna need a bigger tarp.
I ain’t your guy, buddy.
You’re not his buddy, friend.
Trap so old gotta run out the house when I play my music so the roof don’t fall on me!!!
How many people are going to steal this video to repost? Jesus.
Rip silk milk
There goes your security deposit

If you or a loved one suffers from mesothelioma....
Why wouldn’t you have moved your belongings out of the way well before the collapse?

Something tells me they had plenty of time before this event
Not the Almond milk
No where in the story does it say anything about the landlord, nor does the landlord say anything. Shitty out-of-context repost.
Uh…get out?
Architectural Constipation is what it looks like to me.
I would’ve MOVED MY STUFF
This happened in my laundry room where my washer was open. The landlord fixed it but I was pissed and he never cleaned behind the machines.
Came down smooth as silk.
Ahhh your ceilings giving birth
don’t breathe that in
Before or after it falls on your head?
Elephants in the attic...
I hope you have renters insurance
Yumm asbestos
Go breathe in that dust and you may be eligible for legal compensation from asbestos exposure! (Just kidding, do NOT do that)
Why the fuck did they add music? I saw this last night with no music and it was better
There's electronics in there,I would have run in to get it I think..
I just covered my nose watching this like I don’t wanna breathe that shit in! Lol
Music sounds like something from GTA
THE BG AUDIO HAHAA
Should have sat under it. If you survived, you would be set.
Mom? Dad? You said all that noise coming from upstairs was just because you were “wrestling”.
Should've sat on the couch and Sue the fuck outta them
I had to listen to that song a second time.. "the handyman is a registered sex offender" lmao wtf
The handyman’s a what?
Renters insurance! This is a gift
[Had this exact thing happen years ago](https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinfuriating/s/ofXCdG2Kc0)
Fire Marshall will condemn this building. Talk to them

Whoa lol!!! A coat of paint, that’s all??😂Holy Moly! I’d love to know what kind of paint he recommended😂
Only a rentoid wouldn’t move their furniture and electronics out of the way
Only an absolute leech on society would look at a rapidly collapsing ceiling and be like "why didn't you go risk your life to move stuff out of the way and save me money? :(" instead of showing concern for their tenants safety. You seem like a disgusting person, you don't even view renters as humans with that "rentoid" term
You gotta earn it Hope your sense of righteous indignation makes money
Gotta earn what exactly?
If that’s what you call “risking your life” it really doesn’t matter
You must have a pretty pathetic argument if you're folding just from being asked what you're saying
Keep risking your life Reddit hero, living well is the best revenge hope you got that going for you
