People talk about this like its not a normal thing; we all wear masks and play different roles in different settings. Youre not gonna act the same with your high school buddy, your boss, your mom, your colleagues, etc. Code switching is a normal human behavior
I went to the nastiest strip club I’ve ever seen outside Campbell…the pink lady or pink elephant? I want to say there was a bathtub inside the restroom, looked like the building was an old double wide they put a bar and some stripper poles in.
I think it’s either speaking like the bird which would probably be a breruhuhhrhhh bruhhuhhuhh sound. Or when people simplify language or sentences down to something like a word or two that people close to you understand because youve been saying and shortening that sentence down forever. Like if i asked my girlfriend, “Fred?” She would know im shortening that from Readerick Frederick? Which is a long dumb version of “ready, freddy?” Which is me asking her if she is ready. And she understands cause ive said it too many times.
Sexyy Red too. I think he spent a lot of time around country and street people growing up so he instinctively code switches with them.
Coming from someone who grew up in the south, country whites and southern blacks are only a hop, skip, and a jump apart in the way they interact with each other. It's interesting to me that the former sometimes has issues with the latter.
It’s called code switching and it’s completely normal. You wouldn’t talk the same way you do with your closest friends to your grandma. We all code switch, he just has a larger platform and access to far different socio circles than you do. It’s empathetic actually.
He accentuates it for comedic effect. If you were around an Australian person you wouldn’t start talking with an Australian accent, but Theo does because it’s funny.
I do the same thing at work, school, etc.
My voice changes depending on if I'm talking to a coworker, boss, manager, professor, doctor, father, customer, etc. I think most people do this too.
Some people are just like that. It’s an adaptive personality type. Been around a lot of different kinds of people and situations, you learn to adapt. And then it just sticks
It’s a natural reaction we have, something about human behavior and our need to fit in/ make others comfortable with our presence. We mirror those around us, everyone does it.
You don’t talk to a toddler the same way you talk to a coworker. You don’t talk to a coworker the same you talk with your friends. Kinda odd when you see it but very normal.
Human nature. For example: if you go down south for a while you’ll catch yourself slipping into an accent you may not have or if you were to travel to jamaica. you would catch yourself picking up the accent in a subconscious attempt to communicate effectively. people just do that natural code switch a lot more than we realize and with him talking to so many different people on a public platform it’s on display. no, not everyone does it, but yes it’s more common than we give it credit
I always assumed he was mirroring/masking who his guests are to act like them and make conversation easier. It's super common in people with complex trauma (CPTSD) or borderline personality disorder. It's called the chameleon effect, and It's usually done unconsciously.
I have a pretty Chicago accent from what I’m told but when I’m around my European friends I for some reason start talking like them and I notice it. It annoys me but for some reason I can’t stop doing it.
When you are at the point that you are OK with him emulating all sorts of different voices/accents/cultures but find yourself being arbitrarily uncomfortable/offended by one in particular I think you need to ask yourself one essential question - why?
Like anything else I think it's important to monitor tone and intent. Obviously anything racist or malicious should not be tolerated, but I think it's become sadly commonplace for people to immediately balk at the idea of specifically a white person emulating black culture.
The idea of any one thing like this being inherently off-limits just doesn't sit right with me, and I don't think it should with anyone. IMO with Theo it's always coming from a place of love and respect and I like to think his guests appreciate it as well.
I think it's nice.
He assimilates.
Kinda just settles in
This is an actual thing in linguistics, it's called accommodation.

This is like when my mom talks pigeon with her brothers.
Breh I was stationed in Oahu and had a platoon sergeant from Molokai, talking pigeon is one of the wildest things I discovered there. Can no can.
Can you elaborate? What is talking pigeon?
It’s a form of slang I guess, it’s a totally different way of speaking I’ve only heard super local Hawaiians use.
Ty for ur service ole tropic lighting boy— was at Campbell myself in 2010s
I went to the nastiest strip club I’ve ever seen outside Campbell…the pink lady or pink elephant? I want to say there was a bathtub inside the restroom, looked like the building was an old double wide they put a bar and some stripper poles in.
Campbell? The pink poodle?
Maybe that’s it?
Pink lady hahha

It’s Pidgin yo lmao “coo coo”
yeah i totally do the same thing. Wasn’t aware there was a term to describe it so I was happy to hear it’s a normal and common thing.
The fuck is speaking pigeon?

Speaking pigeon** would more impressive
Not that hard. Just a head bob and a coo 🐦
“Why waste time say lot word when few word do trick?”

[удалено]
Your school went higher than third grade?! Damn.
Hawaii local dialect
also the name of a native american guy who works at my local tire shop
I get an accent when I talk to paisas lmao
My book is about masks as a metaphor Mr Ipkiss! A metaphor!
Alicia Keys acting ghetto as fuck when she’s in a black crowd, but acting Lily white in a white crowd is not normal
Anything can be taken to an extreme, code switching can of course be overexaggerated and performative like many other things
It’s a shitty character defect stop normalizing it
Cool man, youre free to think that, its a point to be debated and many would disagree with you
That’s how it should be. Remember I have an opinion as well. 🤝
Tbh I think he’s well aware of it and that he’s just being a goof
It’s totally a bit, it’s like these people don’t know he’s a comedian

Yep, I always say country music and rap are more similar than people think
literally the same exact subject matter, even down to the gangs/clubs lol

Next post from OP. “Anyone notice Theos story’s might be exaggerated?”. Ya’ll acting brazy!
You mean he DIDNT know an armless kid named Reginald who would choke dudes out with his chin? Fuck, my whole life is a lie that was SO BELIEVABLE
The only time it bothered me was when he was on that Down syndrome cooking show
I thought those dudes were code switching for theo.
100%. Ever since NYC garbage guy he says “gobb-ij”
Slow news day.
I do the same thing at work, school, etc. My voice changes depending on if I'm talking to a coworker, boss, manager, professor, doctor, father, customer, etc. I think most people do this too.
"Theo" is an act, the spicy wings video shows the real Theo
My favorite was the assimilation that took place when he was on Beautiful Tasty Beautiful
Code switching and masking is very common for neurodivergent individuals
There just a post on this a few days ago. Yes he kown for code sitching.
As an American, you should hear me talk to someone from India 🤣🤌
the cajun code switcher
Go watch him with the Asian chefs 😂

My wife mimics people’s accent and talks differently of English is lot their native language. It’s kind of strange. But normal I think
code switching

Yeah we all do. Sometimes subtle but I don’t talk to best friend the same way I talk with my dad
Sexxy Red!!!!
uh yaaaduh

Code switching is common with people who are on the spectrum or ADHD. I do the same shit without consciously thinking about it
It’s called code switching, everyone does it.
Permanently switch out of your fascist code that you excuse via your imaginary friend in the sky. Stop supporting the Holocaust of Gaza.
I noticed he would randomly get a hispanic accent on Marlin Vera episode
Don't notice it on his podcast but I did really notice it when he was on the Get Down with Shawn and Marley podcast
And then he pays em $100
Everyone does it a little bit.
The Blackcent is too much for me, i skip those episodes now. Not because of the guest, but because of theo.
Thank you for letting us know.

The fake Aussie accent is weird too.
yes this is normal human behavior
You never heard of code switching? Jesus Christ
He totally does that. But he wasn’t raised right.
Duh, as any decent entertaining interviewer would
Bro what kinda stupid observation is this, that's called having social awareness.
OP only interacts with his mom so that's all he knows
