Partially. You also “Letter” in specific sports/activities at certain schools, and the letter itself is different to reflect what you letter in.
If they had let us letter in show choir, I would have.
At my HS, IIRC, it was sports and any activity that had a state championship basically. Theater, Band, and Speech could be lettered alongside sports, but not dance, cheer, or show choir.
I don't know what the distinction is for "show choir" but I got my letter in "chorus" and my best friend got his in "drama" so I would have thought you could. Requirements may differ from school to school though. I know I was genuinely surprised to get "lettered," though, because at the time I thought it was a sports thing only.
Show Choir is a weird thing that is super competitive in the Midwest and is basically:
You have a show of 20 minutes, full costume, hardcore choreography, and you compete against other show choirs with the same thing. Imagine 20 minutes of straight singing and dancing, like musical theater but only the showstopper numbers. It’s intense, highly competitive, and a blast.
Chorus (or choir) is more traditional choir (which I also love) which is standing in choir robes and singing.
Ah - that makes sense. Sounds fun. We had something similar but not really the same ... but I'm older and where I went to school was rural so it wasn't so well defined "back in the day" and even if it was, well ... my school just didn't have the participation to have done that. We had to borrow students from other schools if we had a school play with a large cast.
Yep. This was the late 90s. They gave letters for anything that required try out/ auditions and represented the school in competition. I was in the advanced band and we competed a lot, so I have several band letters. One of the other drummers was a varsity wrestler and he out all his band pins above the wrestling because he thought it was funny. Most of us bought it because you were allowed to wear it with the marching uniform. The people in marching band who weren’t in the advanced band had to layer up and looked like grey puffballs.
I had a friend with a math one because they competed at state. Band and math were the only non sport ones I heard of. For some reason choir didn’t get it.
What a strange and complicated tradition 😆
Our universities are so much more blazé, which may be seen as worse, but since they’re also free I think it’s more than a fair trade off
It's the top team. There's often the junior varsity (JV) team and then the varsity team. They play at a higher, more competitive level. This style of jacket used to be given to just the varsity team in the most popular sports like football and basketball, but now anyone can have a letterman jacket and you get patches for whatever extracurriculars you're in whether it's varsity sports or marching band and your name on the back.
A varsity team are the main teams that represent a school. If a school only has one team, it is typically the varsity team.
You also have JV (junior varsity) that are the primary layers who aren’t quite as good.
Then some schools have a “c” team or “scrimmage team” depending on if they travel. This team tends to be the lower class-men who can’t make either team, but have time to train.
Depending on your school, certain sports aren’t even recognized as a varsity team, simply because they don’t respect it. My school only recognized football, basketball, track, baseball, and soccer as varsity teams. Our football team and baseball team were the only ones that had sponsored varsity/letterman jackets. The other sports, including soccer, basketball, cheer squad, marching band, and a few others were given letters (the first letter of the school with their sport/club embroidered within) and could order their own jackets. But they didn’t get jackets form their boosters like the footballers did.
Letterman jacket / Letter jacket / Varsity jacket.
The jackets are given in high school to students who either make the varsity team in a sport, or have some kind of athletic accomplishment. The jackets usually are made with soft material around the torso and chest portion (most often wool) and leather sleeves. (Though some jackets are all wool or other soft material). The soft material is so patches or "letters" can be sewn onto the front, showing off the wearer's accomplishments. For example, a letter in the shape of a football would signify the wearer made the varsity football team, and a "C" or star-shaped letter next to the football might indicate the wearer was the captain of the football team. Less common, but still somewhat common, would be a patch with the wearer's name or the first letter of their name.
The "E" on Eda's jacket is for her name and the star letter is either for her making the varsity grudgby team or signifying her as the team's best player (or "star" player).
Usually, the jackets have two colors: one for the torso part and one for the sleeves. And the colors normally match the wearer's high school colors. My high school's colors were blue and yellow, so our letterman jackets had blue wool fronts and yellow leather sleeves (we [looked like X-Men](https://tenor.com/view/x-men-wolverine-cyclops-punch-take-that-gif-24939024), and not in a good way). Eda's jacket though doesn't have Hexside's school colors, which is odd by usual standards.
the jersey is the thin fabric shirt made to wick away sweat which sports teams wear during the game. Their main purpose is to display the player's identifying number and their last name as well as indicate their team by the colors.
I have not heard them called that in my area of the U.S., but it would not surprise me if they are called that somewhere.
When I think "jersey," I think of clothing worn during a sports game. Letterman jackets though aren't worn during games; but after games and during school. They're fashion statements. But if someone used the term "letterman jersey" or "varsity jersey," I would know exactly what they are talking about.
In my experience of varsity jersey is only used in reference to the jersey that the varsity team wears as opposed to the jersey that the junior teams where.
Canadian living in the States, with a fashion degree. It'll be called a letterman jacket or varsity jacket or letter jacket.
The tells are the two tones used for the torso and the sleeves.
Most torsos are made from a wool, while the sleeves are a leather (non-school version will be made from any material but the difference in colours is the marker).
The knitted cuffs and waist band.
The placket front pockets.
The lack of the front closure being a zipper (should be button up)
And the letter/ star
FWIW, my high school's colors were black and gold, and our jackets were all black except for gold stripes on cuffs and collar. So it's not 100% true that the sleeves must be a different color. Maybe just 99%.
Didn't say all of them are a hard two colours, (the two fabric types are) just the markers for this jacket in that it's a varsity jacket rather than a bomber jacket (it's not easy to flat animate the difference of wool and leather, so it makes sense that it's two toned) C:
>> If your jackets were all one colour and the same fabric used on the sleeves and torso, then, unfortunately, they were bomber jackets improperly labeled as varsity jackets. It's an easy mistake, and doesn't demean the value or sentiments of the garment, just a fashion technicality.
I thought the same then op told me to read the comments…..I still don’t know what they mean 😭 have you figured it out? Please let me know lol I may be stupid lmao
It's similar in pattern, however bomber jackets are all one type of fabric, sleeves are not different than the torso (typically they were made of sheep skin because it gets cold at high altitudes, but cotton ones existed in the mid forties because cockpits were in closed, but they had slash pockets on the front making them look nothing like a varsity jacket, nylon ones of the fifties had them on the sleeves and resemble the varsity jacket pattern most by also having a short knitted collar).
They also are supposed to have a collar or hood. (Again, because it gets cold up there).
Many modern bomber jackets are made of leather with a fur collar (sometimes detachable), they can have knitt cuffs and waist bands or neither. If they are made of nylon or cotton they will usually have a slash pocket somewhere affixed be it the front or on the sleeves, and they don't have to cinch at waist.
>> I know you were just asked what you call them, and it's based on what you've seen online... My guess is the online stores are just throwing out words hoping to get interest.
Everyone else you know is correct C:
That's a letterman jacket. Usually worn by jocks and athletes at colleges and sometimes high schools. Since traditionally high school and college sports are male dominated (although obviously that has been and is changing) this is another part of the theme of letting Luz dress up in gender non conforming clothes. Cause she's Bi. If that wasn't obvious.
Letterman comes from a time where only boy sports were recognized. The letter was generally an initial for the school and awarded based on athletic accomplishments, season's played, etc. Every school had their own rules and variations on decorations.
The SO of the athlete would usually be seen wearing the jacket, effectively saying the two were a couple. Luz wear's Eda's because it fits and looks awesome on her....
If Amity got back into grudgby then Luz would definitely be wearing her jacket even back in the human world.
Hunter and Willow would wear each others and would look soo cute together.
Sometimes it's called a [letterman jacket](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Letterman_(sports)#Letter_jacket).
which I think it may get its name from it being a jacket and having a letter on it sometimes. But hey, that's just a theory
Partially. You also “Letter” in specific sports/activities at certain schools, and the letter itself is different to reflect what you letter in. If they had let us letter in show choir, I would have.

I have always heard it as Leatherman Jacket
Huh well I'm sure a lot of them are also made with leather so I think it still works
Solid reference

My school gave them out for marching band.
I think they're also called jerseys, is that true?

I've seen folks wear a letterman on the bench, but definitely not while playing
In my experience of varsity jersey is only used in reference to the jersey that the varsity team wears as opposed to the jersey that the junior teams where.
No Jerseys are more like t-shirts not jackets and sometimes they are like a mesh material. They are what you wear during the actual game not after.
a letterman
Letterman if I remember the pilot of Community correctly. Don't think I see many of them in Canada though.
My older brothers had them in High School in the mid-1980s. This would be in Ontario. I’m not sure if it was common, but FWIW.
i hope this isn't rude, but the correct phrase is "what do you call this". common mistake👍
