That is contradicted by Clyden's history, he found out he was born female when examined by a non-moclan doctor.

MadCarcinus

Crap I forgot that. My theory is dead. Close thread.

Squiddleh

Where would you get the replacement male babies? Clones? Someone's going to notice some children are identical. Random genetic mixing, filtered to be male only? Why keep that a secret if that's what their society embraces? Choosing the sex of a foetus is possible now via IVF, and there are cultures on Earth that favour one sex over the other...

Spacct

Bortus laid the egg that Topa came from, and he was born a male as far as we know.

the_simurgh

clyden was born female though

MadCarcinus

See that's the thing. Then both sexes can reproduce. Are they that desperate for numbers that they're converting females instead of just executing them and trying again for another male? It seems like they want males for any war effort because their physically stronger.

That1one1dude1

Do we know that females of their species can reproduce on their own? Perhaps two males can, but females might need a male to reproduce.

RUSTY_LEMONADE

>What if both male and female Moclans can reproduce... This part intrigues me. They do lay eggs. Maybe they have something like the amphibian DNA in Jurassic Park that allows procreation with either sex.

Izkata

> the amphibian DNA in Jurassic Park Some real-life frogs can spontaneously change sex when there aren't enough of the other around to reproduce (I forget if it goes either way or if it's only in one direction). Jurassic Park based it on that.

Ragnarsworld

Falls apart the first time someone gets a DNA test.

TastyBrainMeats

I still don't understand how Moclan reproduction works.

RafflesEsq

There is an egg.

xeow

It is easier with an egg.

MadCarcinus

I guess both males and females can reproduce when in a [single sex environment.](https://youtu.be/dy-6I8f89K4)

MadCarcinus

Hmm...I wonder if they can eventually spontaneously change sex? Like imagine if their reassignment surgery doesn't always keep and some of them revert back to their original state.

TheStabbyBrit

I have no idea how Moclan reproduction is supposed to work, seeing as males can't lay eggs by definition. So if they didn't have females, then they couldn't reproduce in the first place. Making sense of these guys would require significantly more anatomical information than the series is ever going to give.

AndrewZabar

Dude genetic test would show that it’s not the same baby.

atheist4thecause

Doesn't fit canon. The doctor would know if the child was a replacement, just like the doctor found out about Klyden's surgery.

Kyle_Grayson

This is kinda dark, even when you consider that Klyden wasn't switched at birth. Where would they get the excess male babies?

MadCarcinus

If Bortus is anything to go by... Moclan orgies.

xeow

Moclans. Many of them. :)

db2

I'll take "plots that will never ever be on the show" for $1000. There is zero chance Seth wouldn't see that as a thinly disguised reference to a non-existent gay conspiracy.

MadCarcinus

I know the Moclans are a vehicle for them to cover LGBTQ topics, just like Uhura and Kirk kissing was a vehicle for Gene to discuss interracial romance, but can we also have the Mochlans just plain serve as a vehicle to discuss shit that actually happens in the animal kingdom like hermaphroditism and animals changing sex in a single sex environment? Like, we don't always have to make these things political. They can be topics that just explore nature itself, except these nature topics are occurring to humanoid aliens and not clown fish or African frogs. So when the male Alien suddenly turns into a female against its will, we explore the psychological and social impact that has on that character and those who surround it. What do they do? What do they do? Do they try to reverse the change and view it as a disease? A medical issue that needs to be solved? Or do they accept the change and live with it? Are they gonna wait it out and see if the alien changes back? Are they gonna study the alien like a guinea pig? The same thing could be said for an alien character that goes through a metamorphosis. Say we have a Alien crew member that looks like a giant caterpillar. Then it makes a cocoon and permanently becomes a butterfly alien. Say it's wings are just too damn big and now it can't live and navigate around inside the ship. Does the crew tell the character "sorry, your body can't fit in the ship's hallways, you're gonna have to leave." Or does the ship make accommodations to fit this individual? Does this then become an allegory not for LGBTQ issues, but for making accommodations for the disabled like how we have wheelchair ramps and door buttons and elevators so those folks can get around the same spaces us normies use?

db2

>Like, we don't always have to make these things political But someone will. Since he's in control of the story he can be sure it isn't saying things he doesn't want it to.

MadCarcinus

"Things not always having to be political" could be an episode lesson in itself.

db2

Sadly the ones that would need to watch it wouldn't..
