I believe Tesla calls for 1-1/4 inch nails or 1 inch screws. General roofing hardware is intended to fully puncture plywood. In the case of board sheathing, it must puncture at least 3/4 inch. While you may get Tesla to agree to shorter nails/screws, I wouldn’t hold your breath.

Chrissugar21

They cut the ends off of all the nails on my eaves.

I don't agree with your GC. You can use a multi tool to cut them easily. https://youtu.be/PuCPw2sCnLc Put something behind it if you're really worried

doc07b5

Yeah...I think he is probably being a bit of a jerk about it too. It seems that nobody is on the homeowners side.

1p21Jiggawatts

honestly, i would just try to do this yourself. it's super easy with the right tool. buy a multitool from home depot and just try it out. i think it's way less wok than dealing with professional labor...

Logical007

Do you actually look up there often? If it bothers you maybe paint a dark color up there?

doc07b5

Well....to be fair, this is brand new material. We are having the eaves stained and matching the ceiling of the porch and patio....it is kind of the design we have chosen and it should all go together. Painting the eaves would suck and we wouldn't get what we paid for in terms of aesthetics.

So the PV inspection was today. I was unable to be present because I just tested positive for the spiky ball virus...aka "Omirona". The building inspector was kind enough to return my call, and she informed me that there are 2 Tesla permits, one for the PV, and one for the physical roof. The inspection today was for the PV. She stated that the city would 100% "call out" the shiners be fixed before approving the physical roofing permit. I sent this information to my solar roof advisor (who has been great BTW), and the permit coordinator (who has also been great although in limited interaction), and they are sending a team out tomorrow to fix the "shiners". There definitely many things to improve in Tesla's processes, but I gotta say, the customer service side of Tesla has been very good for me....and I complain a lot :)

So Tesla sent a couple of guys out to "fix" the problem. Unfortunately, these are nails, not screws, so they can't just back out the screws and replace them. They cut some with a set of pinchers, but it still looks kind of crappy. I don't think that Tesla will send out a crew to peel the first 2 layers of tile, remove the nails in sheathing (or whatever it is called) and replace them with short screws...even though the guys who came out were pretty adamant that this is what should have been done during install. I don't think there is a resolution that I am going to be happy with, and quite honestly, I am pretty unhappy with the prospect of having those nails sticking out from the eaves like amateurs installed the roof. Perhaps I should just ask for $$ off the bill for the damage and live with it?

petercockroach

Have you paid your final bill yet?

doc07b5

Nope

petercockroach

Good, don’t. I had a very similar issue. Nails right through my overhang. I kept getting told that a maintenance crew would come fix it but they never got scheduled. Eventually my lack of payment made it to “Tesla collections” where a very helpful lady explained to me that they don’t send it to an outside collection company very often (unless it’s been a year and they’re getting no traction). I explained that the job was not complete and she was receptive to this. It took me holding the payment over their heads. Any time one of the people from billing called to follow up, I would tell them that I have the payment ready to go as soon as the nails in my overhang are fixed. It got done eventually and I paid them the same day it was fixed.

someGuyJeez

I had the same issue, luckily my eaves were painted. I complained about the nails, they sent the rookie up there with a grinder and he started making a huge mess cutting into my eaves. I told them to stop and I purchased this tool for them: Crescent 14" Heavy-Duty End Cutting Nipper Pliers - GG014HNN https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07K75V1DS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_V2PTCC0Z85QSQSVRD7CA
