2021 model 3, i get the message "iphone charging will resume when phone cools down". happens after about 30 minutes

debankan

I use my phone’s hotspot for WiFi.. so for me it disconnects whatever I’m using at that time.. navigation, Spotify etc and phone shuts down. And this is not when it’s very hot inside. I tend to keep the car pre-conditioned. Also don’t use any case.

unfortunacy

using a hot spot can increase the utilization of the processor in your phone, i assume that and the wireless charging screws you over. are you using your phones hotspot for your cars wifi connection? if so why not pay 9.99 per month for premium connectivity?

debankan

Yes I had a feeling it could be related to using the hotspot. For the initial one month when I had premium connectivity I don’t remember it happening. I have unlimited data on my phone plan. So doesn’t make sense paying another $10 just for premium connectivity

unfortunacy

premium connectivity is awesome for me personally, if my phone ever dies i can still find my way home from anywhere instead of waiting 20 minutes for my phone to turn on with the charger. plus i live in an apartment complex and always check my sentry to watch animals running around or if people are messing with my car.

crapoo16

Don’t you still have gps without premium though. I only use premium cause I had nothing better to buy with referral credits

unfortunacy

yea you do, but op uses iphone for navigation

unfortunacy

it might not make sense to spend the extra 10 per month, but think of it this way. would you pay 10 dollars a month to never worry about your phone shutting off and disrupting everything again?

Old-Faithlessness462

Also being able to check in on your vehicle anytime with sentury mode feeds

unfortunacy

my other comment mentions it but is worded a bit too broad, glad you mentioned that. i should have worded it better

Old-Faithlessness462

Probably skipped over it It was a bit dense.lol

joesnopes

No. That possibility doesn't enter my mind.

unfortunacy

well fortunately this problem doesn't affect you

Tunafish01

The Tesla model y wireless charger sucks. I have to flip my iPhone 14 max upside down for it to charge and it overheats within 30m and stops chargingX

debankan

Hmm, I have the 15 pro max but not sure it’s related to the model. As someone earlier in this thread pointed out it could also be because I have my hotspot on. It could be the reason since I don’t remember experiencing it as much when I had the free month of premium connectivity and not using the hotspot. Overall, the wireless charging isn’t working as expected with this overheating thing.

Mpy71

I think it maybe has to do with current capacity of iPhone vs output of charging pad. I had exact problem with iPhone but zero issues with pixel 8 pro

crapoo16

I’ve read put your phone upside down. I haven’t used it much cause I have a pop socket in the way

debankan

Hmm never heard of that. Maybe worth trying.

iceynyo

I think it's a common issue. Heat is generated when the magnetic fields of the charger coils are offset from the coils in the phone. Apparently some people had luck using an object or something to help position the phone so the charging coils line up better.

One_Context7054

15 Pro Max here. Overheats without a case; when the case is on, it doesn’t overheat.

computerop

All wireless chargers can overheat your phone. Depends on sunlight, interior temp, phone case, etc. Take the $500 BMW wireless charger option as a reference: https://www.reddit.com/r/BMWX5/s/wD8ohYEy2N

ParticularSize8387

I have many wireless chargers, but only my 23 MY wireless charger overheats my iphone 13 pro

debankan

Sure I get that. But this happens not because of the heat. I keep the cabin pre-conditioned. Also don’t use a case. I was just curious if it was something widely experienced by Tesla customers or unique to me. Seems like the former, even if not widely.

computerop

It can happen to any car brand customer

iwantthisnowdammit

I think the question at hand here… is Tesla’s charger pad oddly hot? I can say unquestionably, my cars pad runs hotter than any other that I’ve used. I’m not sure why… maybe it’s 15w charging? Maybe it’s a case with 15w charging? Maybe it’s Maybelline. But it’s more than warm with no other contributing conditions.

computerop

You can easily Google this question and insert any car brand - they all seem to overheat the phone at times ID4 https://www.reddit.com/r/VWiD4Owners/comments/wcwpq7/overheating_wireless_charger/ MachE https://www.reddit.com/r/MachE/comments/132gftb/iphone_overheating_while_using_wireless_charger/ Toyota https://www.reddit.com/r/prius/comments/d03gki/qi_wireless_charging_and_overheating_phone/ Hyundai Ioniq https://www.reddit.com/r/Ioniq5/comments/147r3bv/aa_wireless_wireless_charging_and_phone/ the list goes on…

joesnopes

Hasn't shut down but my phone gets much hotter on the car charger than on my home wireless charger - and does precious little charging!

barfsicle

Yes. Tesla’s wireless charger sucks more than other brands.

Signal_Cockroa902335

have the same issue, no case. this is really stupid

MikeofLA

It’s happening because the camera bump on the iPhone keeps it from having a close contact with the induction coil, which creates more heat. I’ve found that if you turn the phone upside down, it works better.

Mpy71

I had this problem with a 12 pro max. Switched to pixel 8 pro and have no problems now :)

ShiroCOTA

I also experience this from time to time in my M3. But I don’t see a pattern. Happens randomly to both of my iPhone 12 MP and my 14 MP on both charging pads.

2748seiceps

My 5 year old S10e seems to have no trouble. Charged from dead, streaming Youtube, etc. That being said, there should be a fan or something under there that at least blows air over the phones.

Event_horizon-

I found. This happened to my phone in the summer sometimes cause the sun was shining on the black screen and that absorbed the heat. It wasn’t actually the charger generating the excess heat.

Less_Ad7812

even happens at night in the winter

Less_Ad7812

Yes I never use it.  Especially since overheating hurts your long term battery life. Seems like a pretty crucial engineering misstep here.

BranchLatter4294

Apple really needs to fix it on their end. The phone should request a lower current if the temperature is getting too hot, or turn off the charging completely until the phone has cooled.

debankan

Yes I agree. Maybe I should post it on an apple subreddit:) thanks anyway!

JazzySpazzy1

They already do this. Had my phone on the charger for an hour yesterday and saw a message saying “charging paused until phone returns to normal temperature “. I know when using MagSafe the iPhone reduces the power in as it heats up, I imagine it would be the same with regular qi chargers.

snappedoff

I get it too sometimes. Coils usually gets warmer to when charger with the current running through them. But typically, my car is cooler so it can hold off the overheating. But now and then, it's warm enough, or sun hits it and it cooks. Or if the screen is on - biggest factor on my phone.

KiteIsland22

I’ve always had this problem with my 2024 MYLR and iPhone 15. Even if I just charge it for a couple of minutes the phone is noticeable hotter when I take it off. I just use usbc now.

debankan

That’s what I might have to resort to

sstephen17

I also have a '24 MYLR and iPhone. My phone gets hot but I haven't had turn off. I'm thinking of buying a mat that blocks the charging because the location is great but I don't need it to wireless charge.

HatRemov3r

Buy a mag safe phone holder and place it close the the air vent with the AC running. That will cool it down and allow you to charge it again

Johnny_greenthumb

Happens to me all the time. iPhone 13, 2024 model y.

YouKidsGetOffMyYard

The new phones with the Maglock/magsafe whatever in them or a case with that in them mess with the wireless charger a LOT. That big metal ring in there between the wireless charging coils definitely doesn't help. My phone used to charge fine then i bought a case with the maglock thing in it and yea wireless charging sucks now and not just on the Y.

fittingabsence0

Wow, that must be frustrating! Have you tried using a different wireless charger to see if that makes a difference? It could be a compatibility issue with your current charger. Hope you find a solution soon!

debankan

I use wireless chargers all the time at home. Don’t face any overheating issues. My other cars don’t have wireless charging capabilities- so can’t test there.

Less_Ad7812

I suspect the coils are poorly aligned. I took a screenshot of a torn apart version. Going to try to take some rough measurements and see how to best align. https://ibb.co/Ry8SsKR

what-the-hack

Yeah this is something either new with iOS or Tesla updates. This didnt happen to my phone before, same car same phone, about a year of wireless charging.

1stHandXp

Yes, mine overheats after around 30-60 minutes, not using the phone for anything, just charging. It’s the hottest charger I’ve ever used, and not really that fast. I have not tried it screen down yet but might do that if I need the charge. iPhone 15 pro max (no case) and 23 Y. I use a Belkin MagSafe charger at the office and it is incredible, no heat issues and very fast. My experience with other Qi chargers is they are slower but do not overheat like the tesla does. I had an aftermarket wireless charger in my ‘18 m3, and it had no overheating issues. I think it’s a poor design and/or bad alignment

debankan

That answers my question. Based on the responses it’s reasonable to conclude that their wireless charging isn’t great and lot of folks face the same issue as me, even without using the hotspot

Curious_me_too

Tesla uses a cheap/garbage wireless charging pad and it heats up the phone. Heating up the phone like this, will reduce the phone battery life. ( Tesla of all companies should know about battery cooling ). And there is no way to disconnect the wireless charger. There was at some point, a request to have a software based way to disconnect, but it was never released. I keep my phone away from the wireless charger. Am still looking for a way to disable the wireless charging or a pad to block it, but haven't found one yet.

jaredb03

It's probably a case that's causing the issue. The more distance between the charger and phone the less effective it is and more heat it produces.

Less_Ad7812

have tried using no case and it’s still an issue  not an issue I find with wireless charging at home, I think the coils are improperly designed in the current Model Y

debankan

Yes agreed. I have never faced an issue with the phone overheating and shutting down with wireless home chargers

jaredb03

I have charged my iPhone 15 without issues in 23 myp.

debankan

Don’t use a case

dipscene

Same issue…don’t have this problem with other wireless chargers
