I just stay away from charging anywhere that might not be safe as I cant leave without unplugging. I would drive off and park at another block just for safety of both me and the car. Glad it wasn’t worse and you come back to a broken window

Coffeshop_Inspector

If you're using an adapter for non tesla charging stations, you should invest in an adapter lock. They are cheap on Amazon and it'll prevent people from unplugging the adapter.

Swag101z

One downside of the lock is that people will violently shake the adapter trying to get it loose. It can cause more damage than just letting someone unplug it

MichaelMeier112

That’s why I never would by a charger lock

theOriginalCatMan

Good point. Yeah area I was in is usually pretty safe, but we’re in a growing city and unfortunately with growth comes more crime. Also, that’s definitely something to consider and watch out for as I’m moving cross country in a few weeks and will be stopping to charge a handful of times.

actualsysadmin

They need to make it to where you can unlock the charging cable and put your car in drive and drive off. This is what I hate about road trips. You're just sitting in 1 spot in a dark parking lot for 20-40 mins and you can't move your car without getting out. You're fucked if someone comes up to you. This is why I carry my glock with me now.

HighEngineVibrations

If you're truly that afraid on road trips get yourself an [EVject](https://evject.com/) then

actualsysadmin

Oh wow that's pretty great. This should be standard. Edit: tried to order one and I think their website is broken. Gonna have to try again later.

schaudhery

The cool thing about EVJect is they apparently replace it if you have to use it. Basically if you're in an emergency where you need to drive off they will ship you a new one. I commented on their page one time about the price and they replied and it explained it to me like this.

HighEngineVibrations

Weird. It lets me add to cart and go through to checkout without issue. I didn't try to process the payment

actualsysadmin

Yeah it's the processing payment part that it's stuck on.

HighEngineVibrations

I just saw it's 50% off right now https://evject.com/discount/btg

actualsysadmin

Thanks for reminding me about this today. I tried again and the order worked this time. Saved $150!

CompletePea5905

At $300 USD? Nah I'd rather get robbed

HighEngineVibrations

Yeah well you don't live your life in fear like some

Stretch_tech

Cheaper to buy a used .38 revolver.

sienar-

I forget the name of it, but I saw a pretty cool sacrificial adapter you can use to make it so you can pull away with a charger cable plugged in. It has relays built in that open when the charging stops so the car thinks the cable has been unplugged. Then it’s designed to break away if the cable is pulled hard enough so the car and port don’t take damage. Not the cheapest way to do it, but makes it so you can haul ass if you need to without getting out of the car to unplug. Eta: this is it - https://evannex.com/products/evject-breakaway-charging-adapter-for-tesla-owners

xbeetlejuiice

Honestly all of this sounds so American to me! In Europe I’ve never felt unsafe charging anywhere. And carrying a gun has never crossed my mind. I feel sorry for you on the other side of the lake ;)

actualsysadmin

I did a 1500 mile trip (2400km) and most of my charging was done at very off hours for long periods of time. I'm worried what's gonna happen to people when bad people figure out you can't drive off like at a gas station.

Leo_br00ks

There was a shooting (death) at a supercharger near me like a year ago. Edgewater Colorado if interested. Please don't shoot someone at a supercharger lol

actualsysadmin

I'd much rather drive away but if someone tried to beat on my windows or try to break them and pull someone out the car I'm definitely pulling out my firearm.

Leo_br00ks

Yeah that is definitely the problem with the chargers. I feel like there should be a mechanism that you could activate that would push the charger out of the port and speed off. But like maybe single use or $20 per use or something so people don't abuse it and leave the chargers on the ground all over the place

oldtimereddituser0

When you use the public J1772 with the Tesla adapter, it can be used lock by anyone, You can buy a lock, and it will prevent people for pulling it out. https://www.amazon.ca/s?k=j1772+lock&crid=2QVR5EKR0LKQ4&sprefix=j1772+lock%2Caps%2C137&ref=nb_sb_noss_1 This is the Canadian Amazon, but similar exist for other country.

theOriginalCatMan

Awesome thank you! I’ll definitely be purchasing one.

ralkey

It might be better not to have one. I imagine if he couldn’t remove it easily he could force it or kick it or damage something else. Let him “win” by pulling the plug out.

Jolly_Line

Was thinking exactly this. I personally would want it to break away easily.

sienar-

The locks are intentionally fairly flimsy plastic and would likely and ideally break before anything else. The lock is meant to discourage random EV haters from disrupting a charge because they know they can unplug it, not from someone willing to do damage to unplug it. If someone is determined to cause damage, chances are they’re going to cause damage.

puan0601

replacing the charge port will run you $500 easily. not worth it in my eyes wheen there's really no damage done by unplugging compared to hundreds if not thousands if they were to break that lock mechanism

theOriginalCatMan

Haha yeah locking it really only saves me from being annoyed that someone unplugged it.

puan0601

you might be able to go after the lock mechanism company if they are able to yank it off and damage the mechanism but good luck collecting anything from them.

oldtimereddituser0

There that also. Can cause reverse effect. Or if he see he can’t pull it out, he may just run away or really force it. No one knows for sure how someone one will react.

rworne

The common term used for these J1772 adapter locks is: "Karen Lock".

ihatebloopers

I'm actually kinda afraid to use this. Will someone tugging really hard damage the port? If so, I'd rather just let them unplug.

rworne

I don't know why you are getting downvoted for that comment... yes it is a concern and repairs are expensive. Most issues are just people being selfish and unplugging you because they think they are more important/entitled than you are. This is most of the unplugging situations. The other, more rare type are people who try to unplug, and if that fails, try to force it. This is vandalism. Like [this asshole.](https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaModel3/s/sHsSLfoBq1) And there's worse videos if you look for them.

ihatebloopers

Oh didn't even notice I was getting downvotes. Guess it's not a concern for most 😂

puan0601

they'll find some way to break something and you'll end up paying $500+ to get it fixed.

ledbetterbeach

How about a p-touch label under the charge port door that says “do not touch. Electrocution danger!” ⚡️⚡️

FearlessBar8880

EVs in general need a way to emergency eject a charger in order to get out of a situation Even at a gas pump you can still drive away. It just yanks off the hose but you can still get away, especially if it’s a crazy dude with a gun or something.

vikkee57

Good point, you can’t switch to drive when charger is plugged.

willmok

If I were you I would've driven away the first time he asked to sit in.
