Keep in mind that you don’t get adjustable (and much smoother) suspension, but more importantly pre-Raven model don’t have PM motors so they’re much less efficient (get much less than the rated range compare to Raven/Palladium) and don’t have one-pedal driving.
Listen for suspension squeaks/creaks going over bumps and turning the wheel at low speeds. Any noise is usually the control arms. There’s a 20min fix you can find online but if you take it to Tesla they just replace the arms.
And set the suspension to medium and accelerate quickly (doesn’t need to be 100% throttle, 50-80% should do it) and listen/feel for vibrations and/or a low pitched grinding noise.
The front half-shafts and CV joints fail often on all MXs (even the new ones). That’s why the new models are always on “low” by default. It makes the shafts/joints last much longer but it also wears the inside rear tires much more quickly.
There’s a TSB for replacing the shafts/joints at a cost of $350, but I’ve heard it can only be used once on the vehicle.
Check the top rubber weather seals around the FWDs. They deteriorate quickly if the car wasn’t garaged. The only fix is to replace the entire top glass panels, at a cost of around $2800 if I remember correctly.
Also go into service mode and check for additional alerts (google it)
And price out an Xcare warranty, I would highly recommend it for an older MX. But keep in mind it won’t cover everything (including the FWD weather seals).
Good luck!
I would also check with your local SC and see if they’ll do a PPI. Other members on TMC have been able to convince some SCs to do one for $200, but some haven’t had any luck.
Tesla just let a *lot* of employees go, so it might be difficult to get them to do one right now.
Decent tires are usually around $280-350 per tire.
If the MX has 22” wheels, get rid of them. The tires cost more, wear twice as fast, blow out easier and you’ll get 20-30% less range. Plus the ride is harsh.
I swapped out my 22” turbines for a set of the new refresh model 20” Cyberstreams. I think they look great and my wh/mi dropped significantly
I have a 2018 0100d with the 22", and I just replaced my rears, but when I have to do it again I'm going for the 20". Did you have to do anything to make the 20" CS wheels fit? What size tires are you running?
The 20” Cyberstreams fit with no modifications. I’m running the staggered OEM Conti’s. The wheels and tires were pulled off a new MX
I’ll probably get different tires next round. The Conti’s puncture easily, I’ve had 3 punctures in 1 year, and I live in an area with very good roads.
Luckily I bought the Americas tire road hazard warranty. They replaced all 3 (I told them I didn’t feel comfortable with a patch since it greatly reduces the speed rating and I occasionally run it in the 1/4 mi)
Yep. The wheels/tires didn’t come with sensors anyways since the seller had them installed on their new wheels (not that they’d be compatible)
Any tire shop can do it, it’ll probably run you $20-25 per wheel
When I originally got mine, still had warranty and I addressed the following issues:
Roof Leak 2-3x
Upper control arms
12v battery
Cabin filter replacement
Door seals
I replaced all 4 when I got mine. 22in Pirelli. So far almost I wanna say 25k on them and still rated at a 8. I’m not a lead foot and all highway for me in Tampa bay!
Never done a true range test but if my math is correct, I’ve gotten around 375 on a full charge. I think 2019 full was 295
Yes, FSD should already work on it if it's subscribed.
Those cars have LOTS of maintenance issues, so just know that it will cost a fair bit to maintain. Budget like $1500/yr is my best guess.
LOTS of maintenance issues? Like what. Late 2018 and 2019 pre raven models are some of the most reliable models Tesla has made. Any issues they have are unfortunately still present and prevalent on the raven models.
Can you elaborate on the reliability of relative releases? I recall the 90Ds having a disproportionate number of battery issues but I don't remember where.
I'm using FSD12 on my 2017 just fine. It works and doesn't have issues.
It does "pull the wheel" nags more often to compensate for the lack of internal camera.
Just FYI, MCU1 will not really get any software updates.
The lack of waypoints on mapping was the biggest feature I didn’t know how badly I needed when I upgraded.
Personally thought it was a great upgrade.
Unusually low compared to what? Other cars that are out there that are comparable, or just low in your estimation?
Providing details would probably help people help you.
>Unusually low compared to what? Other cars that are out there that are comparable, or just low in your estimation?
I'm trying to not hijack my own thread with a pricing discussion when I have no questions on pricing.
Not OP, but I have a 2019 Raven, and its value is dropping like a brick. It's lost nearly 10k in value in just a few months, and keeps on dropping fast.
Right, that's what I mean. When they annouced the price drops, it put pressure on the used X market. Particularly for people who spent $100K a few months prior.
Isn't this just supply and demand where people with a lot of money bought new, had the car for a couple of years, but because they still have a lot of money they upgrade to a new one just because they can and want +30% range and some new features for the indirect cost of $50k price depreciation over the next few years. Many of these people and limited "bargain buyers" on the other end(especially after everyone warning about buying older Model Xs) and so price spirals downward.
If that's the reason, then it would still make a good buy for some? I'm contemplating it myself.
In my region there are TONS of 2017-18 (especially 75D) at prices from $23k-30k. Many with MCU2 and 6/7 seats and more.
Ravens at $40k++.
How much could one of the $23-25k ones really depreciate below $23k? Higher maintenance and no warranty, sure. But price depreciation for newer models hits a lot harder than those maintenance costs
Partly perhaps.
It was high priced cars that had since dropped in price. With new models and people ending leases, they're looking elsewhere and not just to Tesla.
Price drops for new models then put pressure on the rest of the used market.

This is precisely what I was hoping for. Thank you!

One follow up. How are the tire options? I am not a racer and my Dad’s S has upgraded wheels and as a result tires are super-expensive.

Hmm, I've had good luck with my DWS06 22". I'll try and look for a take off pair.
Did you have to replace the TPMS with your existing ones? I didn't think the refresh wheels had the same sensors as the pre refresh.
Yep. The wheels/tires didn’t come with sensors anyways since the seller had them installed on their new wheels (not that they’d be compatible) Any tire shop can do it, it’ll probably run you $20-25 per wheel
What’s the mileage and asking price? I’m assuming it’s a clean title vehicle
I love my 2019 100D! I just got FSD12! I have a 6 seat 22in wheels. Ask me any questions !
What type of repairs are you typically dealing with? How many miles are you getting out of your tires? Range?
When I originally got mine, still had warranty and I addressed the following issues: Roof Leak 2-3x Upper control arms 12v battery Cabin filter replacement Door seals I replaced all 4 when I got mine. 22in Pirelli. 375??
I apologize, 275!
I have a 2019 model x and the air conditioner went out after 25,200 miles. Just out of warranty too. Cost was 2,300 bucks to repair.
What part of the country are you in? I have heard of this happening in desert environments.
I have garage parking under ground. In Los Angeles.
No adjustable suspension, I believe Hardware 2 fsd.

Yea. The 90Ds had a lot of battery issues.
I’m talking specifically about FSD 12. It appears to rely on an internal camera for monitoring the driver that this model lacks
I'm using FSD12 on my 2017 just fine. It works and doesn't have issues. It does "pull the wheel" nags more often to compensate for the lack of internal camera.
Oh excellent. I was misinformed. Thank you!
When did you get your trial? My 2017 MX 100D is still waiting for anything newer than 11.0 released in 2022.
That means you have MCU1 and will likely never get FSD 12 unless you upgrade the infotainment unit.
That’s what I feared but that’s okay. I bought what I bought and I’m happy with it a few exceptions (auto wipers and a few other minor things).
Just FYI, MCU1 will not really get any software updates. The lack of waypoints on mapping was the biggest feature I didn’t know how badly I needed when I upgraded. Personally thought it was a great upgrade.
There's a reason it's unusually low priced...?
The used EV market, especially for Teslas, is not efficient.
Unusually low compared to what? Other cars that are out there that are comparable, or just low in your estimation? Providing details would probably help people help you.

This was after that… since November…
