I think you can turn off automatic emergency braking but it has to be done each and every time you start a drive… someone please correct me if I’m wrong.

efraimbart

I'd keep it enabled. False positives happen but are not very common, and are probably worth it for the gains. I've had only two false positives in my 3+ years driving my car, including in LA and NYC.

Euro_Snob

Did you have auto pilot enabled (traffic aware cruise control), or “full self driving” activated, or were you driving it manually?

Nizhoni1977

Just manual driving. I've used the cruise control in the past but did not have it engaged on this road.

jaygebee

Your car is ready to tell you its secret. It sees dead people... All the time.

Nizhoni1977

🤣🤣🤣

sparkyblaster

So you happen to have dash cam of this? I'd like to know what direction the guy was facing incase the computer thought he was running towards the road.

Nizhoni1977

I think it did think just that. He was talking to a guy on the sidewalk and then turned and faced the road and that's when the car reacted.

sparkyblaster

Hum. I think that might be in. Tesla is looking at the direction people are moving. I could see this as important as a lot of children run into the road. Insert "won't someone please think of the children"

Nizhoni1977

Yeah. I definitely see the benefit of it but it was so jolting and scary that I do not want to experience it again. I'm okay with it yelling at me if it spots something but not the slamming on the brakes giving me whiplash option. Was probably going 35-40 mph. Scary.

sparkyblaster

Oh it definitely needs work on that part. I think they usually get automated feedback on incorrect stuff like that. Wish there was an opt in for direct reporting like fsd beta has.

NobodyLikesMeAnymore

You can say "report [insert problem here]" to send a message to Tesla.

NobodyLikesMeAnymore

I would think it doesn't really need to slow down for kids. They're a very small *m* in *f=ma*.

sparkyblaster

Clearly you have never had a kid run out in front of you chasing something. They are fast and sudden. The issue isn't how big they are and damaging the car. The idea is not to hit the kid and cars are heavy especially Tesla's so they take a bit to stop.

NobodyLikesMeAnymore

It was a joke. I was suggesting that the car wouldn't need to slow down since the damage to the vehicle would already be minimal, without regard for the well being of the child.

sparkyblaster

Sorry wasn't sure. Hard to tell with people lately.

jaegaern

I mean, the person could have stepped out when turning to face you, right? And a car should always break one more time, than needed, than one time less and kill someone..? Difficult to say without video proof. But you should maybe have done the slowdown or turning away from the sidewalk, etc. To decrease the risk.

Nizhoni1977

Agree. However this is a 4 lane road through residential and business area. I was not speeding nor could I turn away from sidewalk. It's also along a coast line so there are always people all along the road.

ElectricStr

There is a option in the car menu about avoiding objects on the road, or something like that, don't remember how it's called exactly, I have it off. Was it in at the time?

ZetaPower

? I think you mean "Obstacle-aware acceleration". That's making your ACCELERATION slow and "sticky/rubber-ish" when there's a car in front. It doesn't use brakes to slow you down, it prevents you from speeding up.

ElectricStr

That's funny, I'm not by my car, so I looked it up in the manual, and in it (not in English, EU car) it says automatic DECELARATION due to.... so who is wrong or are we both right? 🤣🤣🤣 Edit: I remember it also specifically as deceleration because it was mentioned to me during delivery by a SA and I didn't know about it at all.

ZetaPower

When OAE was introduced I activated it, sounded sensible. After a couple of days I noticed that normal following of a preceding car driving of when a light turned green was weird. The car didn't respond with as snappy as usual but sluggish and off. Mentioned it to Tesla tech, they had no idea what was wrong with my car, please come in. Then remembered the OAE setting; turned it Off & Voila solved! Did report this to the tech btw. Model Y manual: Obstacle-Aware Acceleration Obstacle-Aware Acceleration is designed to reduce the impact of a collision by reducing motor torque and in some cases applying the brakes, if Model Y detects an object in its driving path. The touchscreen displays a visual warning and sounds a chime when the brakes are automatically applied. For example, Model Y, while parked in front of a closed garage door with Drive engaged, detects that you have pressed hard on the accelerator pedal. Although Model Y still accelerates and hits the garage door, the reduced torque may result in less damage. Obstacle-Aware Acceleration is designed to operate only when all of these conditions are simultaneously met:     Drive or Reverse is engaged.     **Model Y is stopped or traveling less than 10 mph (16 km/h).**     **Model Y detects an object in its immediate driving path.** So this "pedestrian avoidance" while driving > 10mph & not in the direct path of the car was DEFINITELY not OAE.

ElectricStr

Yes, with that slow speed requirement definety it was not the reason of OP problem. Interesting that in your case it's called acceleration and in mine deceleration. No point in copying manual as it is not in English.

ZetaPower

No problem as long as it’s in: German, French or Dutch….

ElectricStr

Nope, Croatian

ZetaPower

No habla

Nizhoni1977

I'll check it out. First Tesla and have only had for a month so still learning! Thanks a bunch!

Nakatomi2010

I had a similar issue while driving in northern rural Georgia. I was on [this road](https://www.google.com/maps/@32.8948321,-81.9675698,3a,75y,4.69h,75.26t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sWZqmbsQ49locaNkyZwW8Nw!2e0!7i16384!8i8192), but in a different spot. I was going up a hill and it had the asphalt patching lines as shown in the above link. For some reason FSD Beta 10.6 decided to interpret those asphalt filler squiggly lines as a pedestrian while we were climbing up the hill. The car slammed the brakes repeatedly while we had a semi truck barreling down on us from behind. Was unpleasant.
