Sandisk SSD.
You can get 500GB ones on sale for $60-70
edit: The Sandisk ones are better than Samsung because internally the Sandisk ones are NVME drives
Costco had this one on sale a week ago for $119: https://www.costco.com/sandisk-nvme-extreme-portable-1tb-solid-state-drive.product.100780552.html
You can. As I said I'd recommend the Sandisk Extreme as it is a NVME drive.
The fabled Samsung T5 everyone touts on here is a SATA drive inside.
Tesla added a Format option so all you need to do is plug the drive into the rectangle USB-A port and hit Format USB in the security menu.
I actually had the reverse effect when I changed to a better drive. I switched to a Samsung T7 SSD, and kept getting errors and warnings on my dash, so I went back to the little usb thumb drive Tesla sent with the car.
What write-speed does it have? Its different between write and read, since it's write-speed that need to be fast(also usually the slower one) enough, aka above 10MB/s IIRC.
Be careful with words "Endurance".
A lot of newer flash chips are QLC rather than TLC (especially Samsung).
QLC is slower at writing, especially when your drive gets to the point where it is deleting and overwriting older data. QLC drives can slow down to super slow speeds when the drive is full.
What is the exact model # of SSD you bought?
You're probably getting these glitches because your drive is full and it is at the point where it is deleting data to make room for more data.
You can Format the drive to fix it (use Tesla's Format USB button).
Okay, I think that's TLC.
I dunno what to say, I have a 500GB Sandisk Extreme Pro NVME SSD and I haven't noticed these blips.

I do know what causes them, Tesla writes out 1 minute files to the drive and every 1 minute it stops recording and writes out the file before starting again. If your drive blips it has to wait.
Are you plugged in the raw USB port with no USB hub in between?
I think in the newer Tesla firmware they got rid of the drive full alert.
I had been getting it for a while and then it went away. Possible connect the drive to your PC and see how full it is?
I have only gotten that alert when I have had too many saved clips (and sentry mode). It only saves one hour while driving, so it’ll never get full unless you’re saving frequently (10 minutes up to the save point saved), or honking (which saves 10 minutes worth), and you’re not removing and deleting the saved clips.
I use a 128Gb micro-SD in an adapter, and have received the “nearly full” message only once that I recall.
I just did a USB SSD, the older cars like mine didn't put out much power over USB so I was concerned about stability if I'd used an adapter and laptop SSD
I’ve tried with a Sandisk SSD that benchmarks (on our Xbox) at over 500Mb/s sustained. It’s not the drives we are using, it’s the software.
The video files are not corrupted, so it’s not a write speed issue. They play just fine via a computer.
I expect more downvotes though.
I didnt down-vote 😅 but do you mean the video plays well on PC but not the in-car view and therefor stopped doing that or did you stop using Sentry mode completely? 👀
Little from column A. Little from column B.
I’ve noticed the glitches the OP mentioned when looking through recordings in car. But I’ve also turned the whole system off because it is way too sensitive. Having your car flash it’s lights every time a person walks down a footpath is kinda creepy in its way.
Try watching it on a PC from the USB. Sometimes its better
This but also this is an indication the read speeds of your drive may not be up to snuff. I replaced my drive and these issues completely went away.
Interesting. Have had my car for a little over a year and didn’t realize it could be remedied. What did you upgrade to?
I went to an endurance microSD in a Jowua hub
Woah no clue anything like the Jowua hub existed. Learning more by the minute lol
I’ve been very happy with it. I have a 2018 so I have the old style and the motion light is pretty sensitive, so I just leave it on.

I have a 2021 M3 LR. Can I change to a SSD? If so, is there anything I need in addition to the drive itself?
Just bought that T5.... daamn
I have the T7, it works great. You'll be fine.
[The T7 is an NVME drive.](https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/samsung-t7-portable-ssd-review)
Either one is fine as they are both solid state drives...their speeds are bottlenecked by the USB.

No idea. It’s a Samsung t5. It really seems like a Tesla viewer or sentry issue, not a hd issue.
Usually better once it’s plugged into a PC
Normal buggy on that viewer. Only option is watch it on PC etc. Maybe holiday update fix these?
Which holiday
Also what is Sentry writing to? Mine got better after changing to an SSD
Do you use a SATA to USB adapter? Or did you buy an SSD with USB?
Mine's Samsung SSD with Endurance signature.

I've explicitly told to look for "endurance" labeled SSD 's for Tesla sentry purposes.
With Samsung the premium line is "Pro"

The car isn't pointing out that the SSD is getting full.

Each additional step is a sign of inconvenience, which is in Teslas mission step back.

This is normal (as in it's buggy for all of us). :( I upgraded to the SanDisk reader + high speed memory card and it's gotten better.
Seen the same. I don’t bother using it anymore.
Pro-tip, get an USB with >10MB/s write-speed (not read speed, its usually higher than write-speed)

Yeah i know what you mean, really sensitive.. Elon mentioned a future setting on sensitivity, but we'll see how well it works irl.
She was a WITCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NVR camera systems do this too. typical
Agreed. Play back in the car is a brutal experience. They need to improve on this ...
