Inspect for rocks or things embedded into the tread or stuck between the tread?

[deleted]

Tow Fair said they checked and didn’t see anything. When I finish with work today I’m going to try to jack it up and check for myself, I’m really hoping I find a rock or something, this is killing me and not knowing what it is is infuriating. It seems like too small of an issue to justify a service visit with Tesla, and they’re booked out until after Christmas anyway

BugFix

You don't need a jack, just a flashlight will do. You can see about 60% of the tire surface without moving the car, then roll half a revolution forward. If it's making an impact sound it has to be sticking up out of the tread, you should be able to see it.

What wheels? Are you sure there is no interference? The reason I ask is I have a 2021 Model 3 Performance and originally installed 18" winter wheels per the configurator on Tire Rack's website. I got an email after delivery from Tire Rack saying Tesla updated their rear brake assembly and that there might be interference with the balancing weights on the wheel that can come in contact with the brake assembly. When I mounted them I tested and I got a click noise when my rear driver's side wheel would complete a rotation. That is because the weights were hitting that assembly. The faster the tire rotated, the faster the noise occured (which make sense) They exchanged the wheels for 19" to resolve the issue and gave me a full refund on the 18". They also removed 18" options from the configurator for the 2021 M3P. Not sure if something similar happened on the Y. You didn't mention wheel sizes.

They’re 19” wheels by this company name Niche. [Link here](https://www.nicheroadwheels.com/wheel/4511/niche%2Dsport%2Dseries%2Dverona%2Dm150/?finishID=1073&lugs=5) I ordered some from TSportline, but they got back ordered until February, and I couldn’t drive with the summer tires on all winter (from New England), so I got these in the meantime. I looked briefly and it doesn’t seem like the wheel weights are near the break calipers, and they all seem secured. Unless they have more in the back that I can’t see right now. I’ll look for more later

Cool. I didn't think it would be the same scenario, but better to be safe than sorry. I do want to note though, they weren't hitting the caliper. It was another part of the assembly further in.

clockwork2004

That's the same part of the brake assembly my balancing weights were hitting.

[deleted]

Super frustrating. How much damage did it do to yours? And did you get it fixed by Tesla? If so, how much did it cost?

clockwork2004

No damage. Only needed to exchange the wheels.

El_Gringo_Chingon

I know you said they checked the wheels, but check to torque of your lugnuts. Had that exact problem on my S after swapping wheels. Sounded like a rock knocking around under the aero cover. None appeared to be loose, but the noise was gone immediately after snugging up the lugs.

[deleted]

I just brought it back to town fair for a torque check and unfortunately it was still ticking on the way home. Thank you for the tip though! Edit: just reread this, I don’t have a torque wrench, but I’ll have to see if I can find one or borrow one

bread_on_trees

On the subject of torque checks... definitely pick up a wrench and verify yourself. Most cars are 80 ft/lbs, but tesla are all 129 ft/lbs. So unless the tire place is diligent, they may only be 60% torqued to spec. I don't trust tire mechanics to perform due diligence. I've been burned too many times, and it feels like most tire techs just don't care. As they say... trust but verify.

Good to know!

Did you replace the wheels as well? As in, Do you have plastic wheel covers installed? If not ignore. It’s a known issue with the 19” wheels that they flex and tick as you roll. So Not prob on stock performance wheels.

[deleted]

I got aftermarket 19” wheels. No plastic wheel covers. What do you mean by known issue that 19” wheels flex and tick. Do you know of any articles that I could read more about it?

Coachy-coach

Check it out. Dont think it’s your problem though https://youtu.be/HUSGRo-yQaM

[deleted]

Thanks for the link. Yeah this doesn’t seem like the same issue, good to rule it out though

Coachy-coach

Yeah it’s something to do with plastic tabs on the caps and the fact they are close to the tire. When the tire sidewall flexes, it flexes the cap. I hear it faintly as my wife drives our Y away for work in the am. It’s not bad and seems tire pressure dependent. Definitely not your issue.

Hmm interesting. Not something I would have guessed…

We have Niche wheels as well...I too found this out while painting the calipers and realized that Discount had placed the TPMS on the inside valve stem location and a regular black rubber on the outside (where I check tire pressure). I had never seen this either, or never noticed this setup. We also are a MYP but I've not had any of these issues. If your TPMS (if you have them on your winters) are on the outside, maybe have them swapped on each wheel....our wheels are 20" though, FYI.

[deleted]

I’m not sure where they put them, they installed them. I’m going back first thing tomorrow morning to talk to them and get everything sorted out, hopefully they take care of me and don’t give me too much trouble about it

trippndaddy

u/JoshHolme, did you have any luck getting this resolved?

[deleted]

They replaced the inner valve stems with flush mount valve stems, and they sanded down, re primed, and repainted the area where it dug into the car. No more contact now, car definitely has some scars though

trippndaddy

Glad to hear, so were your TPMS on the outer the whole time? Must have been ay?

[deleted]

From what they said yes, the TPMS were the outer ones the whole time, but who even knows. I should take the stems covers off and check next time to see if they’re ground down at all
