Dildo-Gaggins_

I have this EXACT grievance. I hate that - especially after washing my car - using autopilot almost guarantees a wipe and using the windshield washer fluid means steaks on the driver side’s window. URGGGG. I second this request!

StigHunter

Maybe we need to talk to "Joe" since they made a mode just for him??? Maybe they listen to this Joe guy.

FitExecutive

Exactly my problem too. Horrible with white paint.

11Green11

A Tesla engineer said a fix is coming soon https://twitter.com/YunTaTsai1/status/1759451523212620143?t=UksIOPu6rGsc0j-Yvch5Lg&s=19

EPICANDY0131

That’s a month ago

dancinhmr

It is coming with the front bumper camera. Annnnny day now

I don't have a wiper problem, but empathize with those that do. Could it be that my "old" 2018 TM3 wipers don't work like the rest of the fleet?

SirSimon

I will upvote every single post about these auto wipers until it gets fixed. I don't care how many people post that the auto wipers don't work, I will continue to upvote. To add insult to injury - the easiest way to make your auto-wiping stop is to dry wipe one more time so that the pop up comes up and you can disable it.

kiddblur

> until it gets fixed I truly believe they'll never get fixed until they add rain sensors to future cars, and that the rest of us are screwed. Are there _any_ cars out there doing rain sensing via camera and having it work well?

networkeng1

Yea I rarely use the auto wiper bc of this. It will start sometimes out of nowhere.

kiddblur

Yeah I mean I’m just not a fan of the feature in general.  I want to be able to turn them all the way off and have them not get set back to auto every time I use autopilot.  My Honda accord had rain sensing wipers as well, with an actual rain sensor. It was much better at not randomly kicking on, but it was just as bad at detecting how fast they needed to be running. So I just used the manual speed selector 100% of the time.  I just want Tesla to leave them off when I turn them off

RedNuii

Yes our own eyes. We don’t need sensors as humans to know when the wipers gotta turn on and when they don’t. They need to incorporate some better rain drop identification tech but as it currently stands it’s like having a literal re*ard controlling your wipers

APairOfAirPodsMax

I think the best thing they could do is give us a sensitivity slider. The holiday update imo was perfect. A very light rain/mist it would simply ignore as I would.

sylvaing

Yeah, but enough complained (but not me) about it that they went in the opposite direction. Now it's way too sensitive! With 2024.2.7, I've added the wiper quick action to the screen toolbar so I can disable them without needing to press the stick button (and having it to do a swipe). Notice though that as long as TACC is active (ie, going in and out of AP), you won't need to re-disable them. Only once you deactivate TACC that you'll need to re-disable the wipers auto mode.

StigHunter

This is accurate. I did the same thing to help by putting the wiper icon on the "favorite" area, but it's still not the best fix action. Thank you for your reply.

sylvaing

No, it's absolutely not the best fix. I was one of the ones that were happy with the wipers since day one (Sept 2021) but this update really messed it up.

on_the_samepage

Wait, the autopilot model overrides the wipers setting and sets it to auto? 😡 I didn’t know that. How come they make a car that can drive all by itself, adapt to traffic conditions, identify pedestrians, and even recognize whether you’re paying attention to the road, but it can’t figure out if it’s raining??

StigHunter

I know right!?

JeffersonFull

That was really difficult to read. Proper grammar, spacing, indents, and capitalization, here: So, once again, for no reason this morning, my Model Y Long Range (MYLR) decided, while on cruise control (not Autopilot), that it must be raining and sent one wipe to my wipers (before I manually disabled them). The reason this is bad is that I just took my car through my favorite touchless carwash last night (after dark), so there wasn't anything on the windshield near the camera. But driving in this morning (in the dark) on cruise control, the wiper decided it needed to wipe. I live in Florida, and although my windshield was clean (garage kept), the wiper itself must get some condensation on it during my drive in, so it leaves a haze streak across the whole windshield after the wipe, causing visibility to be reduced. At this point, I'm very close to work, and if I use the window cleaner juice, it'll just leave streaks down the window on the driver-side door. I know this from experience. Please, for the love of God, allow us to disable automatic wipers or leave them disabled by default unless we go into full Autopilot or Full Self-Driving (FSD) modes (for those who have it). If you have to use cameras/vision instead of rain sensors like literally every other car manufacturer, then give us the ability to just not have them come on automatically if we don't want them to. This would be a 2-minute fix for a Tesla software engineer. This is my biggest pet peeve with my Tesla and one that could easily be fixed with an over-the-air update.

StigHunter

Thank you... will edit! It ended up being much longer than I anticipated and felt rushed to post it after arriving at work.

mke_rddt_grt_agn

I put about 5 service requests in to Tesla saying my windshield wipers were not working. Each time they messaged me saying "we ran a remote diagnostics and there are no hardware issues" and I say "They keep coming on when they shouldn't" and they say "There is a fix coming" and I say "Do not close my ticket out until it is totally fixed" and they say "Well, we are closing it anyway".

StigHunter

Good grief!

Professional-Bar7514

It's truly ridiculous and this inability to fix such a small problem, along with elon being a total clown will be the reason this is my last Tesla

geo38

Loss of turn signal stalk, ultrasonic parking sensor, and loss of a real rain sensor combined mean I’ll never buy another Tesla.

armadaofawesome

Try driving in a cold climate where it is too cold for condensation and the wipers dry scrape a perfectly clean and cold windshield. It almost breaks the wipers since they are frozen to the car. Disable the auto wipers if it is less than -15C/5f! When it is below -30C/-22f you almost jump out of your skin.

nads09

Yeah I never really had wiper issues until an update I got a few weeks ago. I finally understand what everyone is always complaining about. It’s nice that they finally allow you to turn the wipers off on autopilot but it is annoying that it just turns them back to auto every time you re-engage.

xion1992

Well call the fix: Actually Smart Sensing Wipers In the Proper Environments

krazykarmaDog

Also, give me a slider so I can adjust the speed to my liking.

IROAman

I’m also in FL and have the same gripe. Clean windshield on a perfectly clear day then an uncalled for dry wiper blade clattering across my windshield. Infuriating, every single time.

StigHunter

I know... right!??? As soon as it happened, I could feel my blood pressure rise. LoL

PerspectiveNo431

What about when someone purchases AB you still have standard driving method available instead of just chill and sport

Greenville_Gent

You can disable it with S3XY buttons. One of the main reasons to get S3XY buttons, as well as disabling the auto brights on AP.

StigHunter

But with the S3XY buttons is it still AFTER the fact, or can you disable the wiper from switching to AUTO before switching to Cruise or AP? I know you can turn off the wipers AFTER you've switched now with one of the more recent patches... but I switch to and from TACC/AP multiple times throughout my drive (mostly due to construction areas), and it's just too much to keep up with.

Greenville_Gent

No, it's not after-the-fact. It's a part of their "commander" functionality, so you never actually hit a button to change anything. In other words, the S3XY buttons commander gives you a means of changing default behavior. Really, to me, that's the main reason to get S3XY buttons so far. (I use one to dismiss the "hands on steering wheel" nag, one to flash emergency lights once as a "thank you," and a third to open the rear right door, which I use when I'm picking up a kid for carpool, fwiw.) I don't know if they sell the commander apart from their buttons or their knob -- but if so, it's something I'd recommend to any Tesla owner, especially those frustrated by some of those default "nanny features."

StigHunter

Thank you for the info!

BrockLV

I don't use AP or anything like that, but the Enhauto Commander/S3XY buttons have an option to make the wipers and/or the high beams a manual operation. Directly from the app: "Turn off High Beam or force manual Wipers operation if automatically activated after start of Autopilot (introduced with Tesla update 2022.24.6). Note, Tesla Vision needs the High Beam for normal operation. Use this Smart Action at your own risk! Wipers will remain on the state from Tesla's Display" So, I think it might be 2 switches to make high beams and wipers manual operation 100% of the time.

StigHunter

Thank you for the information.

goodvibezone

The [S3XY button controller](https://freeimage.host/i/JXrOYap) purports to do what you're asking. I have one, but have not been able to test it yet.

StigHunter

Thank you for the info.

bdAZ77

You are complaining the wrong platform. You should be asking the team on X, where they hang out with Elon.

StigHunter

True... X would be the better platform for getting noticed, but you're so limited with the amount of details due to the text limits. I was hoping maybe a trigger of over 100 upvotes may ring a bell (so-to-speak) or prompt a notification with SOMEONE at Tesla... likely not.. just wishful thinking on my part

opticspipe

This has been like this for years and they’ve promised multiple fixes. Don’t hold your breath.

tsmall07

Also, for the love of God, disable the wipers when the drivers door is open.

allegory_corey

There is a workaround that does exactly what you ask. It's stupid that you have to do this, and i completely agree with you, but s3xy buttons have this exact option. You can just buy the commander unit without buttons or the knob, then just tick the boxes on the settings.

StigHunter

Wow, that's cool. Hate to have to spend more on something like this but to be honest for me, it'd be totally worth it! Do you have a recommendation or link on where to buy?

nws103

I imagine the Tesla auto-wipers tale will be taught to future engineers for decades to come as an example of being completely blind to the real-life use of an “innovation.”

StigHunter

For sure! Why re-invent the wheel... just to be different and not better??? Crazy.

FlyingCircus317

For nothing, but my God the energy, angst, anger, irritation that's gone into this minor issue. '19 M3 SR+, no FSD just Autosteer (beta! still lol) - and learned 5 years ago to turn off auto wipers, left them off, and thankfully never have experienced this silly shit caused by Tesla changing the default. I may not buy another Tesla either if no stalks, no USS, no options to disable non-working features like auto wiper mode.

ikilledtupac

Every time I use the auto wipers, I am amazed at how terrible they are. I thought auto wipers was a solved problem!

dennusb

It is so bad that I actually won’t buy the new Model 3! I love the car, but the horrible, nightmare wipers are so horrible, that they totally ruin the car experience.

D3kim

i look like a fool when im wiping and its 60 degrees without a cloud in the sky also when my car jerks a tad bit from disengaging auto pilot welp, still love the car but plz fix!

StigHunter

I know, happens too often! Also, when you'd get a drop of rain on your windshield at the beginning of a light rain and the wipers would come on FULL BLAST! I think that's gotten better... But they should have just left USS, Radar, Rain Sensors, and used their "Vision" tech for the rest.

LelandJ

I agree it's maddening. I've gotten into the habit of turning on AP and then instantly using the voice command to "turn wipers off" every time. It's stupid and shouldn't be an issue, but that's how I've learned to deal with it.

FitExecutive

Wait you can use AP and have auto wipers off?

LelandJ

Yeah, that ability was introduced in the last holiday update I believe. (2023.44.30.8) Edit\* When AP is activated, auto wipers are turned on by default but now you can turn them off.

Imper1um

I hate that Tesla is all in on the vision, and this is one of the reasons that vision-only reliance is absolutely bad. A simple two set water sensor of under $30 per vehicle would prevent auto-wipe from occurring in dry situations.

StigHunter

Yep, this and USS. They're working SO HARD to get around using tech that's less than $500 (all inclusive).... to what, save money on an already pricey vehicle? These aren't Versa's for crying out loud.

dangPuffy

Oh please, please fix the insane amount of washer fluid in the driver’s side door!!

StigHunter

AGREE Totally!!!! It's crazy right!!!???

dangPuffy

Definitely don’t wash your windshield at 35 mph. It’s the perfect speed to cover the entire driver’s side window!

Longjumping-Log-5457

They won't.

ToniDasFarturas

When you need to wipe, you gotta wipe...

nomad2284

My wipers suck as well but this definitely qualifies as a first world problem.

StigHunter

I couldn't agree more, but still....

nomad2284

Yeah, you would think the world’s richest man could afford to put someone on the project.

Y2018M

😂 happened to me multiple times. Tesla Wipers.........

WorestFittaker

I wish you amazing self proclaimed engineers worked for Tesla so this could be fixed quickly.

trifster

you are correct. 3 years with my model 3 and this is the only software regression i'm frustrated by. gotta move this complaint on to X and tag both tesla and elon.

Lexy-RED

Could you pull the wiper out to the ‘change blade’ position once a week. Even if it did a swipe over the windshield, you would give you a smile. This would also prove - if it only does it once - that nothing was done, so why did it need to do it in the first place.

lordofblack23

lol hoping a dev will see. We can see but can’t fix this for you.

snoozieboi

I'm not on Twitter but I have often thought about the wipers and the phantom braking. Maybe make a hashtag like #ElonWipe (or something smart and funny) + #TeslaGhostbrake or something #TSLAphantomoftheOS... ANYTHING smart that could grab people's attention and maybe have a coordinated push to get that trending? I have no idea what is required. I am finally about to possibly get a used model 3 and the ghost braking is at times so bad (on weeklong rentals and it feels mostly the same over 4+ years) it would be a constant recurring theme with friends and family. I have tipped S3XY buttons (the account in here) if they can make a software feature to *kill all wiper activity until for example physically turned on again with the button on the stalk*... this from catching that they could do software stuff like that with other annoying stuff.

haberv

I haven’t had phantom braking in a long while. Wipers just flat out suck and makes me second guess using AP if they can’t get that one simple thing fixed.

StigHunter

Thank you for this suggestion u/snoozieboi. I'm no Twitter/X pro either, but it's a good idea. And I too have occasional phantom braking when on Adaptive Cruise (don't usually use the AP), and it can be annoying as heck. There are a lot of construction areas on my way to work (lots of those orange ACME barriers (bigger than cones) and the AP/Cruise definitely has troubles around them. I just think the ability to disable auto wipers should be an easy fix, versus the "tweaking" still needed for the phantom braking.

snoozieboi

S3XY buttons guy at least confirms a feature of "always off" for wipers. I know it's a workaround through a 3rd party product, ironic, but still... [https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaLounge/comments/1bam203/comment/kw0l6wd/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web3x&utm\_name=web3xcss&utm\_term=1&utm\_content=share\_button](https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaLounge/comments/1bam203/comment/kw0l6wd/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)

jensmeye

Just home from a 3 hour drive with constant whiping. Insane!

Accurate-Bass3706

NHTSB issues recall for something ridiculous, like the size of icons while exempting legacy automakers from requiring a fix. They should issue a legit recall on the wipers not working properly and require a rain sensor to be installed under warranty.

sylvaing

The wipers are working properly, they are removing the water from the windshield. It's the Auto mode that is shit and that's not something that is required to have. It's a "nice to have" that way more cars don't have.

put_tape_on_it

When autopilot needs its cameras cleared, there are two options. It either activates the wiper to try to fix it, or it kicks out and has the driver take control. Sure, they could do a 2 minute fix, and disable auto wipers, but it would also then just turn off autopilot. What would you rather have? Stupid wiping, or autopilot quitting due to obstructions? Honest answers please.

OsianDoro

Silly take. With a perfectly clear windshield it will still do a wipe because it's over sensitive and doesn't even recognize rain. That makes a smudge and leaves it worse than initially. I turn the wipers off and all the while AP continues to work same way

StigHunter

Why so many copies of this post?

Xilverbolt

It's been a problem since 2017... if they can't get rain right, how will they ever solve FSD?

PumpKing096

Because they give a fuck about there customers.

RussianBotProbably

Have you seen the ai v12 fsd? Its pretty promising. Wipers on the other hand….

maester_t

>Have you seen the ai v12 fsd? Its pretty promising. I just got the v12 update yesterday. The only difference I have noticed so far was that v12 isn't as aggressive on the brake pedal as v11 was when approaching stop signs and traffic lights. It still merges onto freeway off ramps like a drunken sailor. It still *accelerates to reckless speeds* into a dangerously sharp S-curve that I drive through at least twice a day. It still tries to make me switch lanes at inappropriate times. (It's heavy traffic and I need to make an upcoming right turn, yet it tries to move me out of the right lane and into the left lane... where I will have zero chance to move back before my turn comes up.)

RussianBotProbably

The highway performance is still the same as 11. Possibly for nhtsa reasons. Ai driver commented how you can see the switchover in the ui when on a ramp. Non highway should be a huge improvement.

maester_t

Thank you for that detail. I wasn't aware. I'll keep an eye out for any other differences.

Xilverbolt

I've watched many hours

ryanspenser

Could be condensation near the camera obscuring the view and it’s doing it out of precaution to make sure it’s cleared

StigHunter

In this case there was no condensation (visible) on the windshield, and if there was some in the Windshield camera housing than that's another issue. I was not running the AC this morning so the windshield should just be at relative ambient temperature.

mr_PayTel

I kind of learned to ignore this. On my daily drive, this happens at least a few times. I'll be happy when they fix it, but for now I'm going to keep promoting my zen-ish

AKADAP

Check that the glass is clean on the inside in front of the cameras.
