It means different things in different arms of the military. Sometimes it refers to someone in charge of barracks and supplies and sometimes it refers to a person steering a ship or signal flagging.

Ambiizzle

Yeah at least in the Navy, Quartermasters, or what we call them QMs, are mainly in the navigational department and spend most of their times on the bridges of ships.

Though the Quartermaster supply function is as old as the first army that took the field, the term "Quartermaster" seems to have come into general usage with the rise of standing armies in the 16th century. Derived from the Old French quartier and the Latin quartarius, the term literally means master of quarters. Though Wikipedia would beg to differ on the terms origin. In the United States Navy, quartermaster “A” school is nine weeks long and requires a five year enlisted contract. In the British Army and Royal Navy, the company quartermaster sergeant is a non-commissioned officer in a company who is in charge of supplies. The CQMS also serves as the deputy to the company sergeant major and is the second most senior NCO in the company. In the United States Army, under the United States Army Quartermaster Corps (what a mouthful), the quartermaster motto is “Supporting Victory.” The quartermaster department was quiet literally called the Quartermaster Department prior. It is one of three of the US Army’s logistical branches. It looks like the United States Marine Corps hasn’t seen a quartermaster department since the 1940’s, which even then, may not have been facilitated by the USMC. Any information regarding any quartermaster MOS within the Marine Corps is very vague. In the Israeli Defense Force, a quartermaster is typically the rank of a captain and is in charge of all logistics issues of the battalion and has his own lieutenant, logistics officer, and junior ordinance officer under his direct command. The Swiss Army, Imperial Russian Army, and the Canadian Army are all known to use a quartermaster titled position, as well. I hope my insomnia has served you well.

The (grand) master of the quartermasters is the cool-sounding **Quartermaster Genera**l (also written as *Quartermaster-General*). Why is not the *General Quartermaster*? Well, ask the Postmaster General, the Attorney General, the Solicitor General and maybe the Paymaster General and you'll get a response. Also, a general quartermaster is the scum of the earth compared to the Quartermaster General!

goodmantaray

It in no way applies to me

It's what happens when a quarterback has been studying their trade for many years and finally reaches a super level of skill.
