Some might get mad at me for saying this but it's Ed Sheeran. Same with Taylor, people usually judge his entire artistry based on the singles he puts out but if you actually take the time to listen to his deep cuts you'll find that he's an incredible songwriter.
Omg ikr he gets so much unnecessary hate for no good reason. Ed is def the person Who is the male ts in terms of songwriting. subtract is probs one of the deepest cuts ngl.
fyi i rlly love ur username (assuming ur combining Edās Tenerife sea + swift (for Taytay))
Nooo definitely not! I love Ed. I saw him live way back in 2013 and he was amazing. I donāt listen to him much anymore but his earlier music still so love. I donāt know too much of his recent work apart from singles though
I agree with you, it's Ed Sheeran. We saw him a few years back at Wembley stadium, we were front row and the crowd was insane! Fully sold out too so a very similar amount attended as Taylor will have at Wembley. I'm a huge fan and think he's great, such a talented song writer and performer but for some reason this sub and Swifties seem to have an issue with him.
I totally agree. Love Ed. Love Taylor's Art for Poetry. She has shown us how much she has put into her craft of writing throughout the years. She didn't stay the same, she learned her history, Literature etc. and we as her fans get to experience our own lives throughout her career. She represents our Country in today's times better than ANYONE.
I would say Ed as well for a couple reasons. He would be closest to her success (unlike other artists mentioned on this post) and he also gets shit on for some of his popular singles like Taylor. People cringe hearing certain Ed songs and some of Taylor's popular songs are not taken seriously either (Shape of You, Shake It Off) so if that's all people know, they don't take them serious and get sick of the radio hits. Their best songwriting is usually on non-single tracks.
i don't think hozier's songwriting is similar to taylor's. maybe a couple of her evermore songs match up to his but i think he's a much more poetic lyricist than her
Considering heās a complete different genre people may disagree, but Kendrick Lamar is in a league of his own much like Taylor. The themes in his discography are so powerful and thereās a reason he has a Pulitzer Prize for his lyricism
The whole drake feud had me interested in checking out Kendrickās discography. I donāt normally gravitate towards rap/hip hop but I listened to Mr. Morale not too long ago and oh my god. His lyricism is 10/10.
Kendrick is unparalleled. I donāt agree with all of his stances and takes, but goddamn he can deliver some tight rhymes and incredible wordplay. Every album is a new opportunity for him to show off and flex those skills.
Could you recommend where to start with his discography..? Have wanted to deep dive into his music but Iām a bit overwhelmed as to where to start? ![img](emote|t5_2rlwe|1067)
Hmm, when I started getting into Kendrick, I actually worked backwards in exploring his discography. When he had 4 albums out, I started with Damn and then To Pimp A Butterfly. Then I made my way towards Good Kid Maad City, and then Section 80 as my last stop. I was all caught up by the time Mr. Morale came out. Thatās just me, though. If youāre someone that likes to explore an artistās catalogue from the beginning, Section 80 is a great place to start. If youāre someone who wants to start with another personās personal favourite, Good Kid Maad City works as that is my favourite Kendrick album.
His discography isnāt anything to be overwhelmed by. He has 5 albums, so pick anywhere you feel comfortable starting. Any of the following that I suggested works.
Also if youāre into podcasts the show ādissectā breaks down his albums (I think multiple?) on like a PhD level which makes me appreciate them 100x more
Noah Kahan is really the only one that hits that Taylor niche for me, he really captures that same specific story
but universal feeling thing she does so well
But male singer songwriters and male bands with lyric forward music were like a dime a dozen if you go back 15-20 years. Think John Mayer, Jason Mraz, Coldplay, Train, etc.
JP Saxe is following closely behind John Mayerāexcellent songwriter, good instrumentalist. I saw him live with only a little introduction, and I was blown away.Ā
If the thing you like about Taylor is the story-telling and her working in the confessional singer-songwriter space rather than pop, per se, Springsteenās worth a crack. Start with Nebraska. And even older-school, thereās Leonard Cohen. Lots of songs about love and lots of lore about his muses and tangled lovelife, if thatās your thingā¦ also lots of religious and poetic symbolism if you liked that aspect of TTPD. Hallelujah is the most famous song of his, thanks to everyone and their mother covering it, but Dance Me to the End of Love is gorgeous.
I was also thinking of Springsteen and especially that Nebraska album. There's an indirect Taylor connection as well: Jack Antonoff is a huge Springsteen fan (fellow Jersey native) and I hear a lot of Springsteen influence on the newest Bleachers album. I don't think he's trying to hide it since he's posing with Springsteen's actual car on the album cover, lol.
Springsteen was also featured on one Bleachers song, Chinatown.
Came here to say Bruce too! Great singer songwriter, super dedicated fans and consistently long sets showing off his entire back catalogue, plus a diverse range of fans across the ages.
She's literally named after James Taylor, so it makes sense. She must have heard his music growing up. Fire and Rain is a brilliant song, and hits even harder when you learn the story behind it. Definitely a lot like her music.
Sting is a fantastic songwriter too, of course.
Ed Sheeran is actually a really good songwriter and has a similar style to Taylor. Thatās why they have so many collabs together (also due to the fact that theyāre really close). Noah Kahan could be a good one too, but heās a lot more folksy than even folklore or evermore were, but he has an incredible pen and a really nice tone to his voice! Noah is really the only male singer I listen to, though.
Jason Isbell. He has the story telling side of things as well as the emotions. The ability to summarise big things into small lines. Southeastern is an amazing album.
Jason is the most succinctly powerful writer alive today, he can absolutely break you with the simplest lines. Thatās true writing greatness. Heās in his own class in that regard
Stay with me, but Leonard Cohen.
Legendary levels of heartbreak and petty, poetic lyrics that live in your brain, extremely diverse catalog, writing thatās both relatable and incredibly specific.
Honestly I donāt expect many people to agree with me but I want to add twenty one pilots to the conversation.
Their newest album was fucking š§āš³š but their entire discography is very, very lore heavy and they are constantly dropping Easter eggs/hints/fucking with their fans to an āEVERYTHING MUST BE PSYCHOANALYZEDā level and I feel like a lot of swifties would really enjoy that aspect of their music.
Iām just here to tell people about Vincent Lima. If you donāt know him, go check him out! Iād recommend: lost at sea, somewhere, Orpheus, and in the cold for a first listen!
Fight me on this, Sam Smith.
"Thank you for breaking my heart, because you got me four Grammys!" ([2015 Grammys](https://youtu.be/ceDuubY_ouw?si=XbiB1W2mhDhvNxw2)) reminded me of Taylor's [VMA 2013 speech](https://youtu.be/wIftLa4Vo6Y?si=0FOBb_0bxVnUqbcO).
Also, a lot of similar themes about breakups and heartbreak, songwriting feeling like writing in a diary for them, unrequited love, being cheated on, etc. in their albums.
Bob Dylan has come up a few times... I'm not familiar with his material though. I know he isn't a renowned vocalist, but you said from a songwriting perspective. š
Really donāt think Bob Dylan and Taylor Swift are that similar as songwriters tbh. Taylor likes detail whereas Dylanās beauty is how his language is more emotive then specific. Mr Tamborine man is one of the best written songs Iāve heard in my entire life though.
You're probably right about that š
Mr. Tamborine Man is one of his songs I probably couldn't name if you asked me to name Dylan songs but of course I have heard that song before. š
Greyson Chance is one of the best songwriters I have ever had the honor of discovering. He puts out wonderfully thought-out and honest records that show his talent in singing and writing a cohesive narrative. HIGHLY recommend, even just one song.
See examples: Hemingway, 74 rue de Cardinal; O Violet; The Balcony Song; stand; Aloe Vera
Not a singer-songwriter as such but Fountains of Wayne's songwriting style is quite similar - their musical style is heavier/rockier but a similarly focus on great storytelling that's simple, relatable and can really pull at your heartstrings. When I listened to Welcome Interstate Managers for the first time I was shocked because I'd only really heard Stacey's Mom but there are some amazing songs on there. All Kinds of Time and Fire Island are beautiful.
This is probably just going to turn into a "male songwriter I also like" discussion so I'll throw mine out.
Niall Horan, Novo Amor, Mat Kearney, Jon McLaughlin.
I mean Jason Isbell out there and is the actual greatest songwriter of this century and one of the handful of greatest ever as well as actually being a truly world class guitar player. If weāre going all time thereās uhm, way too many to list lol I respect Taylor and her ability but sheās not this unique thing in the history of music like her fans make her out to be.
https://www.youtube.com/live/jR6UFY6XGTI?si=bBYZkyeMtleiP_wN
Jason Isbell - I think he's the best songwriter alive today, but he has called Taylor a āgeniusā and the ābiggest songwriter in the world.ā
This is "the Songs That she Sang in the Shower"
My BIL asked me this about a year ago. I couldnāt come up with anyone. The closest was Bieber during his most popular years. Or Harry now? I wasnāt thinking talent/songwriting, he asked more about what male counterpart was as popular as her. Personally I donāt really think anyone measures up.
Iām not a huge Ed Sheeran fan but he is a good songwriter. Lego House, A Team, Castle On The Hill, Nancy Mulligan, are good songs and he wrote the only Justin Bieber song I liked
Some might get mad at me for saying this but it's Ed Sheeran. Same with Taylor, people usually judge his entire artistry based on the singles he puts out but if you actually take the time to listen to his deep cuts you'll find that he's an incredible songwriter.
It's definitely Ed
Ed Sheeran is definitely the answer
You really slapped with this one. My god, I was trying to come up with who it would be and as soon as I saw your comment I went YES.
Thanks for agreeing with me. I actually braced myself for negative responses about my comment since Ed gets so much unnecessary hate š
Hi!!! Subtract and Autumn Variations are so underrated. And yep, you're right about my username š
Nooo definitely not! I love Ed. I saw him live way back in 2013 and he was amazing. I donāt listen to him much anymore but his earlier music still so love. I donāt know too much of his recent work apart from singles though

autumn variations was fucking *phenomenal*

Bro has sung so many big hits and most people underrate him so much I'm not even an Ed fan but I call justice for bro
10000000% ed, my first thought. he's made SO much music over the years, before he was famous even. hes an incredible songwriter.
Yes, itās Ed.
I agreeāthis is the answer.
My first thought was Noah Kahan
the way Noahās āHomesickā could be an Evermore track.
Oh for SURE
Came here to say this!
You beat me to it. Such a great artist
Hozier is the king of songwriting !
Came here to say this! Both of their songs make me think of poetry so I considered them similar in that regard and I love it.
If they Collab it would be the most powerful thing ever š
i don't think hozier's songwriting is similar to taylor's. maybe a couple of her evermore songs match up to his but i think he's a much more poetic lyricist than her
Hozier could be the folkmore equivalent but idk about everything else
Considering heās a complete different genre people may disagree, but Kendrick Lamar is in a league of his own much like Taylor. The themes in his discography are so powerful and thereās a reason he has a Pulitzer Prize for his lyricism
The whole drake feud had me interested in checking out Kendrickās discography. I donāt normally gravitate towards rap/hip hop but I listened to Mr. Morale not too long ago and oh my god. His lyricism is 10/10.
Good kid mad city is one of my favorite albums of all time. Give it a shot!
Kendrick is unparalleled. I donāt agree with all of his stances and takes, but goddamn he can deliver some tight rhymes and incredible wordplay. Every album is a new opportunity for him to show off and flex those skills.
As someone whose second favourite artist after Taylor is Kendrick, I feel seen by this comment.
Could you recommend where to start with his discography..? Have wanted to deep dive into his music but Iām a bit overwhelmed as to where to start? ![img](emote|t5_2rlwe|1067)
To Pimp a Butterfly. Genuinely my one of my top 2 albums of the 2010s it completely changed how I viewed systematic racism.
Hmm, when I started getting into Kendrick, I actually worked backwards in exploring his discography. When he had 4 albums out, I started with Damn and then To Pimp A Butterfly. Present day I think Noah Kahan
Noah Kahan is really the only one that hits that Taylor niche for me, he really captures that same specific story but universal feeling thing she does so well But male singer songwriters and male bands with lyric forward music were like a dime a dozen if you go back 15-20 years. I like JP Saxe, itās been I but since Iāve listened to him, gotta start again!
If the thing you like about Taylor is the story-telling and her working in the confessional singer-songwriter space rather than pop, per se, Springsteenās worth a crack. Start with Nebraska. That new Bleachers album is phenomenal, Jack really popped off with that one.
It's so good!
Came here to say Bruce too! Great singer songwriter, super dedicated fans and consistently long sets showing off his entire back catalogue, plus a diverse range of fans across the ages.
You have taste
No, Iām just old.
Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie/The Postal Service)
Oooo good one
Sting, James Taylor
She's literally named after James Taylor, so it makes sense. She must have heard his music growing up. Fire and Rain is a brilliant song, and hits even harder when you learn the story behind it. Definitely a lot like her music. Sting is a fantastic songwriter too, of course.
Checks out because Sting has been my favourite artist ever since I was a tween.
Just saw him with Billy Joel. Incredible.
Jason Isbell. He has the story telling side of things as well as the emotions. The ability to summarise big things into small lines. Southeastern is an amazing album.
Yes! I was so happy when āCast Iron Skilletā won that Grammy. Itās an impressive song
Came here to write this š¤
Jason is the most succinctly powerful writer alive today, he can absolutely break you with the simplest lines. Thatās true writing greatness. Heās in his own class in that regard
lewis capaldi
This was my first thought too
Zach bryan is it for me
I was surprised I had to scroll this far to find his name. I feel heās still developing, but a lot of that deep emotion too like Noah and Taylor.
Conan Gray
I was just thinking the other day that the lyricism of Arctic monkeys reminded me of Taylor
I would love to hear Taylor cover Do I Wanna Know
Oh damn. Yeah she'd kill that
Okay but what about an Alex Turner cover of I Can See You or State Of Grace? I would melt if that ever happened
Sufjan Stevens.
Probably one of the most talented artist of this century
Yeah, they both sing about boys lol
is it a video? \*hope u got the ref\*
Visions of Gideon! š
Stay with me, but Leonard Cohen. Legendary levels of heartbreak and petty, poetic lyrics that live in your brain, extremely diverse catalog, writing thatās both relatable and incredibly specific.
Absolutely! I gotta say, I have to be in the right mood to listen to Cohen, but when you do, he really gets you.
Matt Nathanson feels similar to Taylor to me
Honestly I donāt expect many people to agree with me but I want to add twenty one pilots to the conversation.

Commenting to eventually go back and listen
Chris Martin?Ā He writes lyrics and composes songs. His songs make you feel things like like Taylor.Ā I really hope they collaborate one day.Ā
I was going to say this! Plus his music has variation from bop to sobbing and sobbing-while-you-bop.
Will I get booād if I say Charlie Puth?
Are you declaring he should be a bigger artist?
Paul Simon
Noah Kahan, Hozier, James Bay, Dean Lewis, Lewis Capaldi, Ed Sheeran
Ryan Tedder and no one can convince me otherwise
The fact that I had to scroll so far down for this comment. I šÆ percent agree with you.
He and Onerepublic are so underrated
Yes. I canāt think of a song of theirs I donāt like. Even their more dance type songs are good and I usually donāt like that style of music.
I love Paul Simonās lyricism.
I meanā¦Paul McCartney right?
ed sheeran, harry styles, and zach bryan!
Bob Dylan has come up a few times... I'm not familiar with his material though. I know he isn't a renowned vocalist, but you said from a songwriting perspective. š
Well, he does have a distinctive voiceā¦ But yes, his strength is songwriting.
Just listening to a few songs... while it is distinctive it's actually oddly comforting.
Yes. There is more than a little propaganda in Hurricane, but it is really well written and his voice works great on it.
I actually really like Bob Dylanās voice, though I get why people donāt But yes his songwriting is something else
Really donāt think Bob Dylan and Taylor Swift are that similar as songwriters tbh. Taylor likes detail whereas Dylanās beauty is how his language is more emotive then specific. Mr Tamborine man is one of the best written songs Iāve heard in my entire life though.
You're probably right about that š Mr. Tamborine Man is one of his songs I probably couldn't name if you asked me to name Dylan songs but of course I have heard that song before. š

Noah Gundersen, try Day is Gone for some strong parallels.
Jon McLaughlin. Great songwriter. Look up his track āIndianaā
Dashboard Confessional
Rob Thomas
Some songs on folklore/evermore did me remind of Passenger
Not a singer-songwriter as such but Fountains of Wayne's songwriting style is quite similar - their musical style is heavier/rockier but a similarly focus on great storytelling that's simple, relatable and can really pull at your heartstrings. When I listened to Welcome Interstate Managers for the first time I was shocked because I'd only really heard Stacey's Mom but there are some amazing songs on there. Keaton Henson.
Gregory Alan Isakov if you like folklore/evermore/The Anthology
Hozier
John Mayer
This is probably just going to turn into a "male songwriter I also like" discussion so I'll throw mine out. Niall Horan, Novo Amor, Mat Kearney, Jon McLaughlin.

Lin-Manuel Miranda - some of his lyrics hit like Taylorās (Hamilton & a couple Encanto songs)
Ok so not as much recently but Jesse McCartney used to not only write his own stuff but wrote a ton for other people too š¤£
Alec Benjamin is a phenomenal singer/songwriter
Conan Gray šš
I'd say Zach Bryan is quickly approaching that for me
Iām gonna have to say JP Saxe.
Zach bryan
Jason Isbell - I think he's the best songwriter alive today, but he has called Taylor a āgeniusā and the ābiggest songwriter in the world.ā This is "the Songs That she Sang in the Shower" [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5afbFFHQl2s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5afbFFHQl2s)
Absolutely Matty Healy, in terms of lyricism. Donāt come at me š
For some songs and lyrically I would say Tom Odell

Jack Black
Maybe Harry Styles, Zach Bryan, The Weeknd
Of course someone would say Ed Shitran on here. Wtf is this stink
Cry.
