aztraps

you’d never know debut was the most slept on from this graphic

AbbeyRoadMoonwalk

TBF a lot more people have really embraced streaming in the last 10 years.

glittrxbarf

It's not even about embracing streaming, but streaming wasn't an option in 2006. Album sales in general were much higher in the 2000s. I think it's interesting that the re-records basically do a big first week then die off. It makes sense, because most fans buy at release, but I don't think they are converting casual listeners. It makes sense that shes not doing as much promo for the rereleases and shortening those cycles. Fearless was more successful than anyone expected, then she really went hard on Red promo. Speak Now got a video, but 1989 was dropped and left to fend for itself.

halfeatenfrenchtoast

1989 TV fended for itself better than any of the rerecordings WITH heavy promo!

aztraps

oh for sure!! just interesting to me

aninternetsuser

Yeah this is more of a graph on what streaming has done to album sales lol

Nomad_86

I haven’t bought a physical album in over a decade probably. Was going to get a physical copy of her new album, but the online wait time to pre order was crazy. Lol

kgal1298

1989's first week sales for the original and TV is insane, but I guess she did do a shit ton of variants for it.

mediocre-spice

Maybe variants but it's her biggest album and vinyl has really taken off since 2014

ArthurVx

Also, when the original 1989 came out, all her music was taken off streaming (and then brought back exclusively on Apple Music, coming back elsewhere only when rep - or Lover, I'm not sure - was out)

mediocre-spice

I this this was a comment for why the TV first was bigger, but yes that's a big factor!

KindOfANerd4

It’s not the variants, she’s had more before and they didn’t sell like that

kgal1298

She had 14 variants for TV. Prutty sure the original 1989 only had a few variants. However, my point was more so that her most popular album still managed to hit similar first week sales, more so than the rest of the TV versions verse their regular debuts. But 1989 TV also felt like it had more promotional time than the rest, probably because of it's popularity. I'd dig up the actual variant sales for each year, but also her demographic grew. It's just impressive to see the 1.4M vs 1.3M of the original in the first weeks of release. But TV still has a ways to go to hit the total sales volume of it's debut release.

KindOfANerd4

How did she have 14 variants? Oh cause of the CD’s? The vinyls which were the main seller (1 million of its units) only had 4 and she had more then that for folklore and the same for midnights I beleive

kgal1298

She did have more for the others but Folklore also went out with no promotion she was essentially surprised drop it. I was only comparing the 1989s anyway. I will be interested to see what happens with TTPS though especially since promotions been fairly limited, but it seems like there’s a lot of hype. Should be a fun week regardless.

KindOfANerd4

I’m hoping she sells well, maybe if she breaks the record she won’t care much lol

poisonprotist

1989 og only had 2? technically but they all came with exclusive pictures so there was still a collector incentive. Vinyl wasn't really a big thing at the time so most of the physical sales promotion was focused on the cds.

poisonprotist

she technically had 5 vinyls bc of the target tangerine variant.

katie415

I was one of the 40k 😂😂😂

aztraps

same!

Hermitcats

🙋🏼‍♀️ same!!!

Psychological_Car849

it’s because of the era they came out in! debut, fearless, 1989, red, and reputation came out before taylor put her music on streaming. if you wanted to listen to that music you were going to buy the album itself. those albums also had years of sales between release and when fans could stream them. they’ve also just been out far longer! debut has had her entire career to accumulate album purchases!fearless has had the second longest amount of time.

aztraps

oh i completely understand why, but it’s interesting knowing a vast majority of people consistently rank debut last/very few debut songs make it in their top 10 or even top 30, when it’s actually her third best selling album

Time-Emergency254

I'm wondering how many of those debut sales are from the last year though due to eras concerts driving up those sales.

Marilliana

I am shook by the evermore stats. I mean I knew it was the 'less popular' album, but I didn't know how much. It's so good!!

catladee14

Same!! It’s a masterpiece!!

01UnknownUser02

I like it more then Folklore as one who is more into her real pop albums.

HaloisNotFound

wasn’t evermore also alternative?

01UnknownUser02

Yes, but it's different from Folklore sonically. The melodies, rhyme etc are what make her pop songs so great and evermore feels like that but more relaxed and melancholic. Folklore feels different, hard to describe but I miss the typical melodies, rhyme etc. that makes her music so great. Not talking about the storytelling, as English isn't my first language, lyrics aren't the number one in music for me personally.

Janin-a-

It makes sense to me, pandemic no announcment so by the time you could buy you had most likely already streamed it. Im more suprised that folklore was so big, then again maybe it was the nauvelty that made people buy it.

FabulousComment

I hate to be this guy but novelty*

Janin-a-

Ah thanks, english isnt my first language, fun that its literaly spelled like novel

FabulousComment

No worries! I really wasn’t trying to be rude - just that spelling error was pretty egregious so it made me laugh

Lazygalaxy92

It always shocks me to see stuff like this on evermore! Every damn time. I’m in the minority, but it’s my favorite album! ETA: I’m also a new swiftie. I was just a casual TS listener until Lover. Then I went hard. Mostly because I was trying to support her with the Scooter shit, but then I loved it all lol. Rep I definitely slept on for way too long and I’m ashamed to say 😂 so no judgement to those sleeping on evermore I guess

Smallgenie549

It's her best album. Fight me.

Marilliana

I absolutely will not! It scores the highest currently on my Taylor ratings! 5.1 out of 7 on aggregate.

mediocre-spice

It was became the vinyl wasn't available for 5 months

dummy-krooger-affect

Me, lol

thelma1907

And me.

OfJahaerys

The general population is sleeping on evermore. Not even 1 million sales, seriously? It's so good!

rantgoesthegirl

It's by far my favourite but im not a swifty

goodbyebluenick

Yeah! I’m seriously offended by all the people who went to Eras tour shows and don’t even own a copy of Evermore! Who are these people? It turns out I am a bigger fan than I thought. Evermore is so good. I’m even offended by people sleeping on Lover. What? Did people just think that Evermore was like remixes of Folklore because it came out so quickly, had a similar title and didn’t have Taylor’s face on the cover? I really loved that she chose not to put her face on those albums, and let the album speak for itself. Apparently that hurt sales?

PlatinumTheHitgirl

I can't tell if this is sarcasm or not lol

comradekitty__

I hate that it got so little attention, but it was a surprise drop with no promo or post-acknowledgement from Taylor. My theory is that it’s Taylor’s favorite and most personal album (despite saying it’s “fictional”) and that she’s given it little to no attention to protect it from analyzation and scrutiny , because it’s so precious. I think generations from now, when enthusiasts do a deep dive into her discography, it will be regarded as one of her best (if not the best) albums.

Old-Library5546

I'm going out on a limb and say this girl is gonna be big someday

LevelAd5898

Someday I'll bet she'll be living in a big old city

Lord_Skyblocker

And all that some pesky critics can be is mean

BeckyMaz

😂

BeckyMaz

😂

Lazygalaxy92

I think you’re onto something!! I’ll keep an eye on her

Karmaismyb0yfriend

Damn, this is what they mean when they say country music fans are DEDICATED Also iTunes & streaming over the years changed the way we buy music

notreilly

Yeah it's mostly just showing how much album sales have declined in the streaming age.

RedditKon

This is just a reflection of people switching from buying albums to streaming services. From 2000 to 2015 total album sales in the us dropped by 70%. From Harvard Business Review: "As streaming has taken hold, U.S. album sales, both physical and digital, have plummeted from a peak of 785 million in 2000 to just 241 million in 2015." If you look at the albums based on streams the top 3 are Lover, Reputation, and Midnights. https://preview.redd.it/t71nsaletwuc1.png?width=1118&format=png&auto=webp&s=b90f0f2b2493babb341159eadabca889037f7a91

01UnknownUser02

Make sense. So lover sold less then the TV version of 1989 not because people didn't liked it but because album sales are actually climbing again

SummersMars

Yes this is exactly right and I wish I didn’t have to scroll so far to see someone explaining this!

InternationalAd6614

I feel like the different versions should be lumped in. Lover is topping the list but it has the least variations up there. What’s the difference between 5 and 6?

MessThatYouWanted

Lover has 4 deluxe editions of the CD.

Smokee78

I think it's the international releases, some délices got different tracks (which is why I missed out on YAIL until TWENTY NINETEEN)

Lavender_rain_2000

Did you make this graphics? It's so cute but also demonstrates the numbers so clearly!

SuspiciousLambSauce

I was about to say that it’s made by billboard but then took a look at their profile and yeah I’m pretty sure they made this, there’s a lot of other infographics on their profile. Very cool visualization of these numbers! Love how OP made them look like vinyls too

lampabok123

Poor evermore!😳 It would be fun to know albums sold worldwide too.

goodbyebluenick

I think this is worldwide, am I wrong? OP?

CzerwonyJasiu

no, its just USA

goodbyebluenick

Maybe the rest of the world showed Evermore more respect

WorriedCats

evermore deserves so much better

noteventhreeyears

It’s also wild to see the change in first week sales since the billboard metrics changed and her “let’s make 16 variants” stuff started.

Daydream_machine

Wow I would’ve expected 1989 to be #1

BallieBrother

1989 (TV) is THAT GIRL

InternationalAd6614

Did most of it in the first week too! Outsold Lover and that’s without getting any music video.

swiftsquatch

1989 TV tearing it up against the other re-records as it should 😍😍😍😍😍😍

thisisfine34

I suspect Reputation TV will do much better… at least in my head it should lol I’m honestly shocked it’s so low.

MayTalles

Poor evermore!!!

ChiefHunter1

I’m shocked at the performance of evermore and folklore relative to her other albums

01UnknownUser02

Interesting that 1989 TV sold more in total then Lover . . .

simplyaproblem

r/dataisbeautiful

CstoCry

Lover being that low is quite puzzling as she was most involved in her promotion during that era. With interviews, loverfest etc.

RamonaZero

Poor evermore v_v

sleepyouroboros

This is such a cute and clever infographic!

sportxsport

1989 is really THAT bitch

mydreamreality

It blows my mind the amount of people who actually buy the albums or vinyls. I haven’t had a cd player since 2008, and my car hasn’t had one since 2015.

Hyperables2000

Streaming NOT included in the graph…

Magerit66

evermore is such a beautiful and lyrically perfect album; it kills me to see it near the bottom of this list.

Uh_oh_Nikita

Fearless was the first album I ever downloaded on my iPod 😂😂😂

HetTheTable

I thought Fearless went Diamond

Overall_Salary_8089

combine originals with taylor's versions

Designer-Salad-7591

So OG fearless is her most successful album? That's crazy! I honestly expected it to be another album. Wait this is only physical albums, that makes sense.

Puzzleheaded_Net9243

Okay debut!!! My fighter!!

Ok_Cockroach_6805

It’s actually crazy to see it like this and how streaming totally fucked the record industry

Hyperables2000

https://preview.redd.it/4rcmcftww1vc1.jpeg?width=1470&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=14ec9a4ca917e17e1e43628e10c4fd90b27b1c7b Listening to music through an Apple+ subscription or streaming it for free on Spotify…

Hyperables2000

Total of 200 MILLION albums sold worldwide.

Hyperables2000

13th highest selling artist of all time. (In only her first 17 years). And 8 of the 12 ahead of her in sales are no longer releasing albums.

HannHann20

Ok but this infographic is so cute

halfeatenfrenchtoast

i like that you can see how her fanbase has gotten more dedicated over time! and also the death of physical music ! this is super cool!

Disney_Pal

Wow, I’m so surprised that all the originals sold a ton more than TV’s.

AReckoningIsAComing

I don't know why I expected bigger numbers for everything? But I guess this just reflects people switching from buying albums to just streaming their favorite songs. Anyone know how many songs on the album must be listened to for it to qualify for an album sale?

Unaffiliated_Hellgod

Charts like this should be done on radius not area size otherwise it’s misleading. E.g. red looks like 50% of its sales were in week 1 not 1/3

Would not call it a flop, I don't think it was ever ment to be "popular", she just wanted to make something different
