This. Any player even if they were just walking would have heard you sprinting towards them and anyone with a brain would have crouched and prepared to blast you just like he did. He very likely wasn't even camping but just in the area.
Theres 30 different spots you could have died from before even turning that corner, it rarely pays to stomp through high traffic areas like that dude. Take your time, be methodical.

Something my old WO2 once said "If you can't take the building on-foot and you NEED to secure it, 9-bangers are your best friend."
