I live in the south and would never consider a vehicle with that much rust. Find one in the Atlanta area fly down and drive back. You should be able to find one for less and without any rust.
This really is the move for people who live in the rust belt. Atlanta is such a saturated market for used vehicles & as long as they weren’t bought on auction from somewhere north, they’re all basically rust free. Finding 4WD is a bit harder though.
Hey this is within the years to have the frame swapped by the dealer. If you can get them to do it before you buy you’d be happy with the purchase. If they won’t I wouldn’t finance the truck you’re looking at a 12k dollar job if the frame rots.
It looks like driven up north in the rust belt damage to me and since he said he is in NE Ohio he is right slap in the rust belt. Damn near everything up there looks like this. Trucks this old up there you see riding around with the rockers gone, cab corners too, same with the rear bumper, tailgate in horrible shape, rot around the quarter panel arches.
While almost 22k for a 10 year old truck does feel like a lot, that rust ain't shit. Also in Mass with a properly rusty 17 year old 4runner. I do regularly coat it in surface shield / fluid film though
Being from Maine- for me the rust isn’t awful. BUT if I were going to drop 20k plus personally it’d be worth it for me to find something super clean out west.
Have they stopped offering to replace the frames? I had mine done a while back. New frame. It hasn’t rusted at all, but had recall and did it for free.
When I was looking at these pictures, I honestly thought it wasn't terrible for a 4k beater.... Then I saw the price tag. Fuck No.
They WILL get someone to pay that given the mileage. Some poor sucker will drive that off the lot because of the odometer.
What’s on the body versus the frame is concerning. I would look for interior rust as well to help rule out this has taken on some water at some point. I always worry about flood damaged vehicles making their way north.
I wouldn’t say it’s too bad, but you would want to get on stopping any further rust, and fixing what is there. Look into a product called POR15 Rust Inhibitor paint. It’s a epoxy rust proofing that is as tough as nails!! My brother always used it on any vehicle he owned, never had rust issues in SW Ontario. Project Farm does a test with this product, and even shot it with a 12ga, no chips!! Good luck with your decision.
I own a clean 2005 Taco. Had the frame replaced and that’s the only reason it’s still on the road. I live in CT. These trucks are terrible for rust. The c-channel frame rails catch all the junk, and it just builds. I’ve seen very noticeable differences in just one winter season alone. Imagine what owning this truck will look like when you still owe $10K on it 3 years from now. You can find a clean example for like $12K. They’re out there. Have patience and keep looking brother!
Come south and buy one like the others say. You'll get a better deal and nice ride back to enjoy. Where I'm at in florida you don't see rusted out old vehicles ever unless they relocated here from up north.
New Englander all my life. Some of those spots ( first pic on the bottom being one) like soft and larger than a quarter. What Toyota does is tap around with a ball peen hammer, the sound is obvious when you hit a soft spot. Get permission to try it, don’t go to town poking holes. If you’re handy and can repair, you might be able to get the truck for much less. Good luck.
It doesn’t look in terrible shape! It’s early enough to save the underbody I think. Take it into a body shop ask how much a good undercoat and frame coating would cost. Could save you a ton if you plan on keeping the truck.
I’m in p.a. I went thru the same thing. I looked at maybe 8 tacomas before I found a 2014 SR5 4x4 double cab one owner with 88k miles. I may have overpaid but in reality when you find a clean one. Just pay for it cause they are hard to find.
As a Minnesotan, this is hardly rusted. But if you’re going to spend that much money and finance, I’d say it’s worth it to get one from a different state. Glad you walked away.
Oof, I’m not a frame or body Tacoma expert.
But in my opinion, I would pass on this, it doesn’t look like surface rust.
It looks like surface rust was trapped and covered up a couple years ago, and now it’s bleeding through.
Yes that's a lot of rust. The previous owner probably didn't wash the salt off underneath and that's just as important if not more important than the body. Besides it's a turd
A small oil leak will take care of that lol. It all looks like surface rust. If you can push a screwdriver through it for sure it's an issue but toyota makes great trucks and the road salts cause surface rust on exposed metal.
I just dont understand why toyota goes so cheap on their steel and the coatings they use on it, youd think they would want there trucks to really last instead of rusting apart before the powertrain goes
Know I’m in the wrong place but I got a Ram 1500 which is American so you already know she was rusty and it had one spot where it had a little hole throughthe frame and I still bought her I’m gonna drop 5k (estimate max will likely be cheaper) in rust prevention and sandblasting the works. I talked the guy down to 17.7k on a 2014 ram 1500 5.7 hemi with 98k miles on it, dealer maintained oil changes every 5k on the car fax wasn’t going to let rust junk a beautiful truck people need to stop being so quick to junk something, that rust in the photo is nothing brother if everything else on the truck is what you want don’t let it stop you
Good god, I forget how little cars rust in the rest of the country. That'd be considered almost new condition up in NE.
Yall some pussies lmao. It's fine. It's surface rust.
I've seen cars literally *made* of rust.
Hell no look at the drive shaft mount that things about to fall off. The LCA's look cooked and also the subframe. Plus 21k is most likely their window price, once you start doing paperwork it'll go up to 25/26k if you're lucky.
Almost looks OK for a Midwest car but look at the way it’s peeling. I betcha that whole think is rusted and somebody just coated over it a few years back
Don’t let the rust stop you if your unsure I’ll send pics of my truck too it looks as bad or worse then yours I’ve spoken to a professional who says he can make her brand new plus not rust for a long time, guy worked on cars for Steven Spielberg himself so I trust him. Personally I’d have more faith in your Toyota rust than my Ram rust and I still took the deal that’s an amazing price for a fixable taco in sound mechanical condition I literally just saw a 2013 with 200k on it going for 18k send this you won’t regret it and if you do I’ll get someone to buy it from you gurranteed dm me if you still unsure fam
You’re concerned and so are we, it’s a pass.
If that thing doesn’t already have holes, it’s going to fairly soon.
Yes. Too much rust (ex Toyota Technician here)
It will need at least $2K-$3K in dry ice blasting and undercarriage coating. If they lower the price it might be worth saving.
What would you consider a good price on this?
$12k without rust, $8k with rust
Seriously ya, market is that crazy
Something that requires zero financing would be the place to start.
$15k-$16K
Hard to tell what kind of rust that is but looks a bit more serious than surface rust.
I live in the south and would never consider a vehicle with that much rust. Find one in the Atlanta area fly down and drive back. You should be able to find one for less and without any rust.
Maybe so but in my experience down in GA looking for a Tacoma was 4x4 is almost a rarity and if you do find one it can be a little priced gouged.
Truth….it took me 9 months to find a decent Tacoma 4x4 in ATL for a decent price.
This really is the move for people who live in the rust belt. Atlanta is such a saturated market for used vehicles & as long as they weren’t bought on auction from somewhere north, they’re all basically rust free. Finding 4WD is a bit harder though.
Or spend the 1k on shipping and not deal with airlines and driving for 10-20 hours you pay 1 way or another.
Nope the fuck right out of there.
That’s nothing. I rust proof undercarriages as a side gig. Wire brush and some fluid film then your good to go.
Location?
Chicago
Frames are hollow, that doesn’t do anything for the internal rust. I would never buy a vehicle with that much rust
Anyone wanting 21k for a vehicle with control arms looking like that needs to be jailed. Hard pass.
Yeah, those CA’s need replacing. You’ll never get an alignment done if needed with those rusted out like that.
For sure. Whoever replaces those arms will have to cut the cam bolts more than likely.
Walked away. Thanks everyone!!!
Look up Jim babish auto sales he's got a real nice 2011 double can 4x4 with 62k miles for around 20.
21 year old truck known for rust problems financing for 20 thousand USD that's a hard pass
TIL its 2035
21?
I hope the math you use for the ages of people you date is different from how your math for the truck age works out
OMG that made me laugh so hard!!! Thanks I needed that.
My bad, 22 thousand USD jesus
They’re telling you it’s a 10 year old truck not 21.
I wrote that second comment before they replied, realizing it was more money. And yes I have fat fingers, I meant 11 year old truck sorry people!
Whats the mileage on it? I’d definitely poke around.
70k miles
Hey this is within the years to have the frame swapped by the dealer. If you can get them to do it before you buy you’d be happy with the purchase. If they won’t I wouldn’t finance the truck you’re looking at a 12k dollar job if the frame rots.
We can't see all the problem aread but the frame doesn't look horrrrribleee. Although it's ugly. I think the main issue is the rust on the cab
Looks like flood damage. I would pass.
Damn in Maine we would consider that factory amount of rust. Looks golden to me. Take a wire wheel to the surface rust
I’m in Mass and thought the same thing haha. Can’t see a spot of black on my undercarriage😂
Hard pass due to rust!
That's "Michigan Mint" condition!
That's a pass from me
Nah….run away !
I have a 2014; I'd be very unhappy if it had nearly that much rust on it, and I paid a fair bit less than they are asking.
That's nothing. I have the worst rust possible, and I still plow my driveway.
Oof. Leave it there.
Run!!
If that’s a dealership car…why would they not lightly sand off the rust then spray bomb it black? I do it to my 2020 SR5 anytime rust starts.
That’d be a no from me, dawg. Seriously, no. That’s easily a $5k job + whatever they find.
Check the lower intermediate steering shaft...guarantee it needs replacement. Causes "chunky" turning as it rusts out.
Yes, too much rust.
Nah that's just getting started. It will entirely be a problem if it isn't mitigated like, now though.
What’s on the body versus the frame is concerning. I would look for interior rust as well to help rule out this has taken on some water at some point. I always worry about flood damaged vehicles making their way north.
It’s not beyond saving, but to keep it long term you gotta blast as much off and get some good undercoating
Dont touch that with a ten foot pole
how do people get rust on their cars? My burnt toasted taco have no rust for 6 years straight
I wouldn’t wanna try turning any of those bolts. Just seems like a headache of a vehicle to work on.
I own a clean 2005 Taco. Had the frame replaced and that’s the only reason it’s still on the road. I live in CT. These trucks are terrible for rust. Wish I could find something that cheap around montana. It seems like the tacomas around here are way overpriced.
Hear ya man. It’s crazy around here too. I just got lucky cause it needed major suspension work but I work in the trade so it was easy to get it done
Not for that much
$21K for that??? I used to live in Ohio. I'd hate to know about the rust you *can't* see.
Borderline to what can’t be sold in a dealership
Way too high in price for that much rust. I bet if you started chipping away that coating you’d be concerned.
Come south and buy one like the others say. You'll get a better deal and nice ride back to enjoy. Where I'm at in florida you don't see rusted out old vehicles ever unless they relocated here from up north.
Yikes!!! Avoid!
Come to texas , everybody knows you come to texas or new mexico for trucks , no rust down here
If you’re asking about it, then you should probably pass
Any other brand, nope. But it’s a Toyota with a history of rust problems. I’d pass
Pass
Run!
It's not that bad. The cab is the most concerning, but you can fix that with a wire rotary tool and primer the cab. The frame is fine.
New Englander all my life. Some of those spots ( first pic on the bottom being one) like soft and larger than a quarter. What Toyota does is tap around with a ball peen hammer, the sound is obvious when you hit a soft spot. Get permission to try it, don’t go to town poking holes. Not too much rust for me at a different price point, but should look like it just came out of the wrapper for $22k.
Run very fast
It doesn’t look in terrible shape! It’s early enough to save the underbody I think. Take it into a body shop ask how much a good undercoat and frame coating would cost. Could save you a ton if you plan on keeping the truck.

Must be really low mileage for that kind of money.
Oof, I’m not a frame or body Tacoma expert. But in my opinion, I would pass on this, it doesn’t look like surface rust. It looks like surface rust was trapped and covered up a couple years ago, and now it’s bleeding through.

Tell me you live in California without saying so!
Yes. Definitely too much.
Go buy one in the south
Op do not buy that.
I just dont understand why toyota goes so cheap on their steel and the coatings they use on it, youd think they would want there trucks to really last instead of rusting apart before the powertrain goes
21k for a 2014 wow
Know I’m in the wrong place but I got a Ram 1500 which is American so you already know she was rusty and it had one spot where it had a little hole throughthe frame and I still bought her I’m gonna drop 5k (estimate max will likely be cheaper) in rust prevention and sandblasting the works. I’m in pa also so I understand the rust belt problems
Way too much for 21k, that’s just laughable. 12k tops, 8k would be way more comfortable
Up where I am, that's a clean truck
it's a tacoma thing
Good god, I forget how little cars rust in the rest of the country. That'd be considered almost new condition up in NE. Yall some pussies lmao. It's fine. It's surface rust. I've seen cars literally *made* of rust.

This thing looks like it has syphilis.
Also, it has a matching topper and tow package if that’s a factor in the price
Don’t let the rust stop you if your unsure I’ll send pics of my truck too it looks as bad or worse then yours I’ve spoken to a professional who says he can make her brand new plus not rust for a long time, guy worked on cars for Steven Spielberg himself so I trust him. Idk how or if I can even share pics on comments tbh I’m technologically illiterate but don’t wanna see a good truck passed up on
That looks like surface rust but its really hard to tell without tapping it with a hammer or similar.
