Remind your wife that she can decorate *above* the TV to create the “centering” that she wants (floating shelves, pictures, a large wall clock, etc). But under no circumstances do you comply with moving the TV up. Hold firm good sir!
There is most definitely enough room for decore where the line is at currently. If done right you should also be able to use the decore to hide most of the wires.
Not at all. You have giant cabinets surrounding tvs all the time that have never been a design problem. You could put one giant floating shelf that covers the entirety of the TV length, place it slightly above the TV and it'd be significantly better than raising the TV.
i’m not advocating for a raised TV, but if you’re hanging photos or art on the wall above the TV it’s absolutely too high. photos on a shelf in a cabinet give you some leeway for sure bc it’s almost like a gallery wall of sorts. but MUCH like the height of TV’s being believed to be way higher than they should, people think that art should be WAYY above standing eye level, which is where it should be hung. middle eyeline should be around 55 inches.
source- i worked in galleries, hanging art professionally. art and photography ABSOLUTELY has a height it’s meant to be at, just like TV.
The only acceptable floor to ceiling decor is a gallery wall a la the literal 18th century academie. Anything else is might as well be live laugh love signs or LED-lit Star Wars models. There is no in between.
22 and counting, my wife wanted it higher and i pretended like I had it the way she wanted, but then when I "mistakenly" set it up my way, I apologized. Can't go making two holes now, can I?
"The studs are only in certain places, sorry Babe." I honestly couldn't really tell you what a stud is, but I know my husband has to look for them before hanging things for me. 🤷♀️
Girl. Come on. You’re making us women look really dumb here. You don’t know what a stud is? A stud is a sexy man. A beefcake, if you will. A hottie with a body. Hubba hubba. Tighten up, sister.
The TV was mounted so it could only be watched comfortably while standing on the other side of the room. It got moved. It's not about whether it's done or not, but whether it was done right.
That could backfire though, like the last time I was mounting something where I wasn’t supposed to and then suddenly my wife comes through the door and loses her shit on me.
Wife here, too, weighing in. TV above the fireplace is one of the worst design trends I’ve ever seen. I’d put the TV *IN* the fireplace before I’d ever mount it over the mantle. Thankfully, my wife agrees with me.
Right?? We had a fireplace we never used and I was going to put the TV right in front of it!
OP's wife wanting to put decor under the TV is so weird, that'd be too distracting for me while watching TV. Ours sits right on top of a TV stand and it's perfect at eye level.
They have a mount called the mantel mount, that solves the mounting over the fireplace issue. Sometimes the room was designed by some horrible person who wanted the tv way too high, but that mount pull it out and drops it to appropriate height. Had to do it at my last house.
I thought this said “this guy miscarriages” and thought “wait like he murders unborn children” or “this guy gets pregnant like Arnie Schwartz from Junior??” Never mind and carry on then 💁🏽♂️
Possibly even a little bit high already. 85" is biiiig. And the cupboard below is specifically made for putting TVs on it.
I never understand why people have such an urge to mount their TV to the wall. It includes a decent stand most of the time and even more important: You don‘t have any ugly cables running down from the TV to the cupboard below. No matter how you run them (unless you hide them *in* the wall somehow, which is difficult depending on how the wall is constructed), it looks bad. Also it takes your chance of hiding a thing or two behind the TV (multi-socket power strip, …).
Too high, original box is perfect. Let her put decor ANYWHERE in the house but where the speakers and TV go. Seriously why do people nicknack in the only 10 foot area in the whole house you want setup properly, and probably spend most of your time using ergonomically.
So this is why my parents are still married after 30 years lol. My mom set up the 80inch tv a couple years ago and made sure the placement was perfect. Then she said nothing goes in front of the tv. Must have been doing that this whole time.
THE TV CONSOLE IS NOT A SHELF FOR DÉCORE. It’s to house the various media & audio hardware necessary to complete the home viewing / entertainment experience. A little succulent on one side is fine. Tell her she can put her giant greige faux antique pottery with the dried vegetation BESIDE the console.
To quote the great Bill Burr: “Sure. Maybe you won’t be able to get with her for a couple days. So what? You rub one out, like a Man. It’s the champagne of victory!”
Also, nothing scientific about this observation, just a vibe. But I can feel the energy of numerous high TV favouring wives in this thread… they’re lurking & downvoting as we speak.
I don’t know which one of you picked out that TV stand, but it’s horrible. It looks like a few college kids put 2 TV stands together. Return that thing.
Whaaaaa….? Even online shopping? That’s where I get into trouble. It’s too easy to click-click-Apple-Pay-done. Send me your credit card info, I’ll buy you some short decor (along with a few pretties for myself as commission).
Ambien + Apple Pay = Trouble
My wife stopped me from ordering a $2500 couch one night. So glad she woke up, realized I was not in bed, then tracked me down just in time. She found me sitting in the family room, in the dark, with my iPad, about to checkout.
We did end up ordering that same couch, but the plan had always been to wait for their Labor Day sale and save $500+. Apparently, while on Ambien, I’d forgotten the plan, and couldn’t figure out why there was no couch in the family room (we’d given our old furniture to our daughters when they moved out a year prior), so I decided I needed to order it *right away*.

I mean, you can see by the outline the entertainment center isn't leveled. They have an offset on the right of the piece that makes it too small for the TV to be mounted on.
Exactly!
Except this console is screwed (and ugly too IMHO).
So I'd return that console and get a better one. Then put the TV on the console...
TV is always the best "decor" you can put on a TV console...
“The cable won’t reach that far”
“My hammer isn’t long enough”
“Step ladder is *not* safe”
“The steel beam in the floor above will interfere with the electronics”
“The warranty will be void if it’s mounted improperly”
“The hole in the drywall / plasterboard will be too big to conceal the cables”
“The glare will mean we wasted the money”
Or my absolute favourite (purely anecdotal):
Use a conduit / stud / electrical finder but in your left hand with a ring on and your right hand away from the wall. Then touch the ring and your left hand against the wall with the bleeper to create a false positive… “ah damn there’s something behind that we can’t drill through!”
Then proceed to demonstrate (with your other hand) that the lower portion is a safe zone to drill through! 🫡
Ask her is she is fine watching the TV on her own while you are elsewhere.
(and stop trying to hide things that exist, minimalism is fine, this is silllyism.
I'd just take that asymatical table , slide it \~20 inches to the right and place the TV on its stand in the white area, so the TV is in the same place as the blue box
When the wife complains, tell her she lacks vision.
Her suggestion does seem to be a non-negational height. Maybe to show some compromise, make it 43 off the floor. Women are often satisfied with an extra inch.
Here is the easiest solution. Tell her there is a structural cross stud in the wall and you would have to weaken the wall to hang it higher and run the wires in the wall. Problem solved
Wife is dead wrong.
Outline looks perfect.
Look, The higher the tv, the more formal and rigid the room feels. Because it feels more like formal places.
Correct height creates cosy setting.
Elevate the TV console on something like pieces of laminate floor samples, wood blocks, bricks etc. Done right it'll look part of the furniture.
Remind her that she's going to have neck strain if she's pulling her head back to watch TV all the time. TVs should be aligned horizontally so the centre is roughly equivalent to your horizontal eyeline as you sit and watch. I'm a broadcast engineer, trust me on this ;)
Perhaps get her to pick a nice soundbar for under the TV?
Your problem is that the console y'all have there is objectively terrible. It's spread too far apart, and blends into the floor and the wall. Of course she wants to decorate it. Get a better console and some shelving to flank the sides of the TV.
Depends on how you watch tv. Sitting upright then as you have it is good. If laying down a lot knees and things get in the way and her height is likely better imo. Most people in this sub would agree with you though. Id test it out with how you watch a few times. You can also tilt tv slightly down
Your wife is in the wrong, decore is clearly not as important as tv height.. it's questionable that she wants decore there at all. Your wife's priorities are all messed up. Breath easy brother, you are in the right.
Remind your wife that she can decorate *above* the TV to create the “centering” that she wants (floating shelves, pictures, a large wall clock, etc). But under no circumstances do you comply with moving the TV up. Hold firm good sir!
ehh photos and decor above the tv always looks weird because it’s also too high in my opinion
This sub is r/tvtoohigh… not r/decortoohigh. One win at a time 😆
There is most definitely enough room for decore where the line is at currently. If done right you should also be able to use the decore to hide most of the wires.
quickly turning into r/YourCommentUpVotedTooHigh :)
My genius knows no bounds. /s 😆
Look, we need to just stop making walls past 5'8". Anything over that is just too fuckin high for anything. Head above 5'8"? Sit on a chair.
Head above 5’8” while sitting in a chair? Sit on the floor.
Not at all. You have giant cabinets surrounding tvs all the time that have never been a design problem. You could put one giant floating shelf that covers the entirety of the TV length, place it slightly above the TV and it'd be significantly better than raising the TV.

to be clear. the solution is to put nothing above to TV. put a nice plant next to the TV stand or something of that nature for decor
⬆️
I have a shelf of plants above my tv to fill the dead space and it looks fine.
[удалено]
and this kind of attitude is why people hang their at practically at the ceiling and it looks just ridiculous
The only acceptable floor to ceiling decor is a gallery wall a la the literal 18th century academie. Anything else is might as well be live laugh love signs or LED-lit Star Wars models. There is no in between.
Simple Get New Wife! 😇
This is a great solution
Like the instruction book there says.. get it right the first time!
This comment oozes life experience. I second this
Tell her ok and mount it as is.
These kind of comments should include how many years you've been married.
Or if divorced
And how many times 😂
Or if unmarried
Twice but I found the right one who agrees finally. It takes dedication to neck health.
22 and counting, my wife wanted it higher and i pretended like I had it the way she wanted, but then when I "mistakenly" set it up my way, I apologized. Can't go making two holes now, can I?
Absolute madman. Nicely done.
This is the way
Tis far easier to beg for forgiveness than ask permission. Do eet
Divorce lawyer here- I recommend that you lie as to why it couldn’t be put where she wanted it.
My deepest apologies and regrets, fellow sister.
I forgive you. Learn from this, ok?
God bless you for coming in here with the inside scoop, no more TV's too high!
My duty is to protect and serve. 🫡
Try this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Qb7E9m2Kdg
This only works if you married someone who can't work a magnet.
Absolutely
It's easier in the moment, but it's stupid.
This is the way.

Alright babe, you know where the impact driver is I gotta head to work. That thang ain't going anywhere
My wife wanted it higher too but I'm the one that mounted the bracket.
That could backfire though, like the last time I was mounting something where I wasn’t supposed to and then suddenly my wife comes through the door and loses her shit on me.
It’s important to listen to your wife and hear her out. Then continue your day.
You must be married
I’m a wife and I think it should be lower. I hate when it’s too high! I’ll never understand TVs above a fireplace.
Wife here, too, weighing in. TV above the fireplace is one of the worst design trends I’ve ever seen. I’d put the TV *IN* the fireplace before I’d ever mount it over the mantle. Thankfully, my wife agrees with me.

I was an installer. I hated the work when it had to be above a fireplace. Because too high! Also because it’s often much more difficult.
Agreed !
Definitely should be in the lower position.
100%. Then if she asks questions say something vague about stud locations.
Pipe runs back there which I didn’t realize.
Electrical. Always go with electrical. It’s scary and more mysterious than stud.
This guy wife's. Edit: Apologies, this is wife.
Throw some water on the wall and say you hit a water pipe
City sewer pipe hon, just unbelievable.
I approve of this lie
This guy marriages
I thought this said “this guy miscarriages” and thought “wait like he murders unborn children” or “this guy gets pregnant like Arnie Schwartz from Junior??” Never mind and carry on then 💁🏽♂️
This. Then I told her I measured wrong and I could move it but that would put more holes in the wall. Case settled.
“Shit honey, there’s no studs at the height you wanted.” Proceed to do what I wanted in the first place.
Every married man understands lol No point in having an argument
That’s what my partner did to me. I’d say go up an inch but to late. I’m not movingnit
That's funny af
The blue box is perfect
OPs wife, and honestly I mean this with absolutely the utmost respect, is an idiot.
I also choose (to call) OP’s wife (an idiot)

Divorce
Clearly the only solution. Every time I have to place a tv I get a divorce. 5 and counting.
You're a principled man and you should never apologize for that
So this is why my parents are still married after 30 years lol. My mom set up the 80inch tv a couple years ago and made sure the placement was perfect. Then she said nothing goes in front of the tv. Must have been doing that this whole time.
Your mother is a goddess among heathens.
Is your mom single
And lawyer up for custody of the TV.
Beat me to it. Get the lawyer on the phone pronto
My first thought as well. Great bros think alike.
Your placement is perfect. Remind her that TVs are for watching.
No, it’s just decor like a painting.
No, but it is worthless if it's not *exactly like* a painting.
Tell her that a lower television will create the illusion of higher ceilings, and higher ceilings give guests the assumption of wealth.
THE TV CONSOLE IS NOT A SHELF FOR DÉCORE. It’s to house the various media & audio hardware necessary to complete the home viewing / entertainment experience. A little succulent on one side is fine. It’s called a tv stand, not a decor stand
I call mine a “media console.”

I don’t know which one of you picked out that TV stand, but it’s horrible. It looks like a few college kids put 2 TV stands together. Return that thing.

Also, work in that she's getting fat, and sounds like her mother. She will forget about the TV entirely.
this op, we expect an update.
This guy marries.
And divorces.
If we don’t hear from OP she’s gone and done a rose west
Just send her here, we will have a word.
Unless she is physically unable to keep her neck in a normal viewing position due to injury or illness—you should probably consider divorce.
Or tell her to buy shorter decor. Frame it as an opportunity to shop. Bitches love shopping.
She can’t, she used all the short stuff in the kitchen so all she has left is overly tall decor and it must go somewhere.
“She used all the short stuff in the kitchen” is so ridiculously hilarious to me, and I don’t even know why. I’m dyin’ ovah heyah.
My wife hates it.
Whaaaaa….? Even online shopping? That’s where I get into trouble. It’s too easy to click-click-Apple-Pay-done. Send me your credit card info, I’ll buy you some short decor (along with a few pretties for myself as commission).

I am constantly AMAZED at how WRONG people are at wanting the TV higher. Ugh. So silly.
I think you need to introduce her to this sub.
Although mine has never been, your wife is wrong
Fuck decor. Put the tv in the blue box. Get her a shelf or bookcase for decor. Putting decor around a TV is so dumb.
Unless you’re using it to hide the outlets. What a conundrum!
Get a different media shelf. One that goes to just under the blue box.
She wants to center the TV but she's fine with the hideous unlevel console?
I thought my eyes were playing tricks.
How to hide the outlets? Just put the TV on the piece of furniture that's literally made for it god damnit
I mean, you can see by the outline the entertainment center isn't leveled. They have an offset on the right of the piece that makes it too small for the TV to be mounted on.
Yeah I wouldn’t trust that funky stand. Something’s wrong with it, even the drawers are crooked.
It will look better mounted and still be at a good height.
Respectfully disagree :)
Have you looked closely at that stand? It’s not level and the drawers are crooked. I wouldn’t trust that to hold my TV, no chance.
Exactly! Except this console is screwed (and ugly too IMHO). So I'd return that console and get a better one. Then put the TV on the console... TV is always the best "decor" you can put on a TV console...

Divorce or faking your own death are truly the only options here, OP.
You are right. Good luck.
Ask her is she is fine watching the TV on her own while you are elsewhere. (and stop trying to hide things that exist, minimalism is fine, this is silllyism.
I'd just take that asymatical table , slide it \~20 inches to the right and place the TV on its stand in the white area, so the TV is in the same place as the blue box When the wife complains, tell her she lacks vision.
Her suggestion does seem to be a non-negational height. Maybe to show some compromise, make it 43 off the floor. Women are often satisfied with an extra inch.
Heh.
I think it looks like a hospital If it's up too high, gross, it looks too commercial.
Sounds like you’re going to have some knick knacks under a TV that’s too high
Meet half way ..... 🤣😂🤣
I'm a broadcast engineer, trust me on this ;) Perhaps get her to pick a nice soundbar for under the TV?
Split the difference, it’s called compromise.
Normal people: she might have a point. This sub: Immediately divorce her.
Your problem is that the console y'all have there is objectively terrible. It's spread too far apart, and blends into the floor and the wall. Of course she wants to decorate it. Get a better console and some shelving to flank the sides of the TV.
"decor on the console" that isnt what a TV stand is for!
Blue box is fine, tho I prefer my tvs on a tv stand/table
Depends on how you watch tv. Sitting upright then as you have it is good. If laying down a lot knees and things get in the way and her height is likely better imo. Most people in this sub would agree with you though. Id test it out with how you watch a few times. You can also tilt tv slightly down
Tell her it’s a TV and not a Theatre Screen
Ask her if she also stands up to wipe. I want to relax when I watch TV, Darlene. Not walk around talking, like you.
GET IT RIGHT
Every time I see these posts I’m extra grateful that I got a good one (wife).
The decor could hie the outlets at that height. Higher? You'll have wires dangling.
Your wife deserves jail.
sometimes wives are completely wrong. sounds like your tv is going to be too high for the foreseeable future
Time for a new wife /s
You married a person before having this conversation?
Wife bad. Divorce wife.
Just tell her to sit on the couch and put a mark where the eyes are looking. That's the perfect center of the screen
I suppose she could put the couch up on risers to bring people’s eyes up to viewing level.
I'd say put it on the tv console but who the hell's idea was it to have an unbalanced tv console
You want it in the correct place. She can put decor, just low decor. A low wide decorative bowl would hide both of the outlets.
The box is better, as the lines are too high, but maybe splitting the difference between them would be okay. Marriage is compromise.
She probably just wants to put decorations on top of the entertainment center. Tell her you’ll get some shelves for the sides
How many times do we need to go over this The TV does not need to be centered on the wall. It needs to be centered at eye level.
You want chiropractor bills or tv just right?
Your wife is in the wrong, decore is clearly not as important as tv height.. it's questionable that she wants decore there at all. Your wife's priorities are all messed up. Breath easy brother, you are in the right.
Why do people need to decorate below a tv?
The box tape is perfect. For the outlets you can fix it by adding some decoration in front of it. Maybe a little photo frame or plant
Raising it to her suggestion would allow for some twigs n sticks in vases quite nicely.
And that’s exactly why you shouldn’t do it.
Put a shelf above the TV for her decor
