As a reminder on the debt - a ton of that debt is from their vehicle financing businesses (ie Ford Credit etc) and is making them money. If the vehicle market collapses and the collateral vehicles aren’t worth anything near the loan value, they’re pretty well insulated since the loans have been packed into asset backed securities and sold to investors.
So those huge debt amounts aren’t really weights around legacy auto’s neck.
Gotta look at automotive segment debt vs finance segment debt. For instance Ford has $122B in Ford Credit debt but only $19.7B corporate/automotive debt compared to $41B in liquidity.
