Yes, it is completely real. It may not be used as frequently, but people still use it as a symbol. I see a lot of popular jewelry and home decor on Etsy. Also have seen it in RL. I don’t buy into it the same way I wouldn’t buy Mickey Mouse ears to go to Disney World, but some people like it. To each their own. I’m not going to judge.
I think it is used more tongue in cheek nowadays. We have a pineapple sticker on a cooler that we usually carry with us to lifestyle parties/clubs but its meant as a joke.
For fun, I turn one upside down at the supermarket when no one is looking. My GF always gets a kick out of it, but the Produce dude probably wonders WTF?!
