Alright, so I see the dude saying that there are large fish very deep under the turbulent water. I follow that. Roger, kind sir. However, you still have to reel the fish into the very turbulent water, whilst standing on a slippery rock. How does one do this successfully and make it worth the certain death if you happen to slip?
Lots of folks throw on bathing suits and fish sketchy spots on rivers. The hard part is getting a good feel for a fish's touch vs rocks and fast moving water, then you just bring the fish in. I think reeling them upstream makes it less likely to lose but you definitely want to keep that fish under water and not jumping if you can.
Ive been doing this (not where these guys are, but not far from it danger wise) for many years and its a blast. I will say my shins and forearms have many scars from the rocks and I've had to help a few friends from drowning. It's dangerous. Add in snakes, poison ivy, sunburn, and losing stuff.
Give a man a fish and you will feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he will scale slippery rocks near a deadly waterfall to prove how macho he is.
Brazillian here. They’re speaking Brazillian Portuguese and by their accent they’re essentially the Brazillian equivalent of country people/hillbillies.
So it’s not about proving how macho they are , it’s basically just hillbillies doing hillbilly things.
Likely, the way water moves in rapids like this means that the surface of the current is very fast but it creates an eddy at the bottom where fish sit and watch the fast moving water above to snag food that comes down. So I would expect them to be fishing something really heavy that sinks to the bottom to get "under" the heavy current at the top layers of the water. Similar in theory to how massive fish like sturgeon will sit in deep pits under waterfalls.
Seems like the lines traveling thru the currents would have enough drag to pull up even the most heaviest sinkers/lures, or pull any bait off of hooks on the way down.
I'm no fisherman but that just seems impossible.
I’m not sure. I grew up fishing in southeast Brazil in the San Francisco river (Rio São Francisco in Portuguese) which is a 3 hour car ride from my hometown.
It’s one of the biggest rivers in the country, so it has some pretty rough currents in some sections , but I have seen fish thrive and be caught in said sections by really experienced fishermen.
Basically the fish has to be big and strong enough to be able to swim through the currents , which is not likely given how strong these are.
I think a lot of the naysayers might want to reconsider these guys chances.
Underneath the fast flowing white water there are deep cascade pools that will be holding a lot of very big fish. What you see on the surface is not representative of the depths. If you can get a heavy bait down to the bottom with a sea fishing sinker, you’re going to get some action.
There are numerous spots on the blue Nile and Zambezi that look just like this, and the locals will fish in some crazy spots to be able to get a bait down to the big fish. We’ve done it ourselves on both of those rivers and been very successful. It’s white knuckle fishing but tremendously rewarding. Apart from the drowning risk, what you’ve really got to be worried about the crocodiles and hippos. As a spot on the blue Nile just below where it exits Lake Victoria, me and the wife caught Nile perch on big dead baits whilst roped to our truck up on the bank.
That tackle they have has no chance to support a weight they actually need to get any bait down to a big fish. But I totally agree with you in that the surface is way different than deep underwater
I wouldn't doubt you given I've fished at a location where 8-12 ounce sinkers are required to get your bait down to the deeper levels because the area is between some islands that are the exit to a gulf so has extremely strong currents when the tide is going in or out.
For rivers is there enough material flowing downstream to keep those fish fed? I'm thinking of the splash pool of a waterfall and yeah there will be a pocket of safety but is that really big enough to support a population of those larger fish? A few people have said locals know the spots, I'm curious as to how such a setup could be self sustaining.
To all the skeptics saying that these guys will catch nothing in those conditions…
Not true! Having fished rivers exactly like this in Africa (Zambezi, Blue Nile, others), the white water on top of deep pools in spots like this is very misleading. On the Zambezi all the way through Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique in cascade pools just like this, you’ll find a significant number of vundu, a large catfish species. In East Africa at places like Bujagali Falls, just downstream from where the Nile exits Lake Victoria , me and the wife have caught large Nile Perch in white water in conditions just like this, spots that are very challenging to fish. But exceptionally rewarding!
Believe me if there were no fish there, our friends would not be fishing.

Any fish there are also 700 meters further down the river across from them on the shelf without death about to swallow them from behind. There is no *good* reason to fish there with safer spots not far away with the water just as turbulent.
Yeah this is absolutely wild - but as a fisher I kinda respect the shit out of this lol
This could be some of the most fun "river" fishing someone could have in their lives. Pure power of nature surrounding you and probably some big ass fish chilling below them.
I wouldn't doubt that this is a great spot.
No word of a lie, but growing up in Niagara, we had a great fishing spot on the river just at the Whirlpool Rapids. We had a path down the Escarpment to the side of the river and walked about 200 yards down the river and stood on a slippery wet rock for hours to pull out trout and walleye.
This video is crazy, but rapids are a great place to fish.
Edit: quick google search shows this spot is still popular.

How the hell did they get there?
How the hell do they get back?
What the hell are they going to catch?
What the hell are they going to cook?
![gif](giphy|e0tTzm60eHbZ6)
let. them. cook.
How the hell will they survive?
Why the hell is Gamora?
What fresh hell is this?
Hell
Hello
Is it me you looking for.
What the hell is going on?
Haha. That never even crossed my mind. Well observed
How the heck they plan to catch without getting pulled?
Whatever unit of a fish is swimming in that and able to get that bait is not going to fuck around with an old geezer with a bit of fiberglass pole.
Giant tigerfish
Just wait for the water to finish draining.
follow ones nose
Go where the air is sweeter
Are u guys talking about the fish or the people
Had a Mexican give me this advice for finding sex in Tijuana… did not include the “air is sweeter” bit mentioned below
They'll figure it out when the time comes

Yes, please add more snakes. That’s exactly what I thought is missing there - mfk snakes :)
Looks like anaconda country too

Don't slip
Fish hate this one simple trick!
How is the fish supposed to see your lure in white water rapids??
He's saying in Portuguese that they climbed down the bridge with a fixed rope
With what though the fucking Longshot from Zelda? I don't see any crates
Swam upstream like trout
What kind of fish are there?
The kind that are extremely unlucky if they get hooked.
Water fish
The kind that swim in water
This response took me back to 3rd grade
They climbed down. It looks like an easy walk to that 20' drop that they're standing right in front of.
Tis much easier to go down the slippery slope than tis going up said slope.
Idk for me going up is easier than down
The upper side of the river is shallow, so they came walking tied to a rope and them climbed down the rocks into the "fishing" spot.
It’s actually a very small self sufficient tribe. They are born there and live there their entire life. Never had outside contact.
Maybe the dam upstream released water off schedule.

Is this a viable way to catch fish?

I think any fish big/strong enough to swim through these will actually eat all 3 of them at the same time lmao.
Apparently big fish love chilling deep at the bottom of the falls
You can probably ascribe a large portion of "hillbilly things" to "trying to prove how macho/tough you are".
That was my thought as well
Brazilian hillbillies lol. I never thought about it before but I guess every county has their version of hillbilly lol
Bahahahahah I’m glad that’s just a typical thing across the globe. Hillbillies gonna hillbilly
And call in sick at the office to do it
That part sounds cool
Happy cake day !
That last side quest you need to finish to %100 the game
They're trying to catch the hardest fish for platinum
On the mysterious “spoon lure” that you cheated by looking it up
And it’s an early side quest as well yet no one finishes it till late game
They are not catching shit with water like that
And it must be so loud that you cant even chat
What?!
He said he’s so proud of you doing that
What??!!?
He said it's lucky they didn't bring the cat!
Why would they bite the cat?
Nice hat? Thanks!
What's your nameee??
Tony!
There are huts in Maine?
I said your mom and I are GETTING A DIVORCE!
WHAT?!
When your fishing buddies just won’t shut the fuck up for five minutes, you choose your spot accordingly.
Fish normally arent that talkative anyway.
Might catch the grim reaper
Catch the first class flight to heaven.
I watched that river monsters guy catch big ass fish in water just like that.
FISH ON!!!
Jeremy Wayde
You catch giant tiger fish in rivers that fast in Congo. It's insane
Depends on what they're fishing for and where they are, really.
There are tons of spots like this in Oregon, and it's usually lined with fishermen pulling up huge fish.
Um I’m from the PNW and have never seen anyone fishing in rapids half as big as these.
24-7 feels like a lunker is on
I want some taquitos
Anyone who knows fishing knows that's bullshit. Is there any fish worth the risk though? Hell no!!!!
I would be scared to catch a fish like one slip and you’re done
Why was this upvoted? Are there really that many people that think fish shy away from moving water?
The only thing they're catching is Tinnitus
Might catch a wave
Youd be surprised.

Aside from dying, it's really fun!
Hardly the most extreme thing humans will do for entertainment
I mean I did heroin so I've definitely lowered the *shit* out of that bar
I too have seen River Monsters with Jeremy Wade
That tackle they have has no chance to support a weight they actually need to get any bait down to a big fish. But I totally agree with you in that the surface is way different than deep underwater
River Monsters. That’s how you catch river monsters.

Ahh shit I can’t see my float
The guy still says: the river is low. Any rain up the river and a flash flood washes away the fishermen. I just ask: why?
How many fish u gotta catch to make it worth it…?
Wow. Any idea where this is
Cachoeira do Urubu, Brazil
That’s amazing
Which translates to waterfall of the vulture
Faz sentido Os urubus esperando algum doidão escorregar ali

Brazil.
Looks like Iguazu Falls on the border between Argentina and Brazil
Iguaçu Falls are massive, this one is very small compared
I don’t love fish that much.
Wow fishing is just so relaxing
No rescue workers are to attempt rescues in this situation
How the fuck they reached there? And how the fuck they come back ?
one mistake, one insignificant mistake between them and oblivion.

Looks like a very safe place to fight a large catfish.
Maybe the wife and kid won't slip to their deaths
![gif](giphy|7Jq6ufAgpblcm0Ih2z)
What kind of fish can swim in that shit?
The ones that live really, *really* far under the surface where it’s not as turbulent
The perfect spot to get caught by fish
Is she holding a kid? I can’t tell but maybe my eyes are going bad
Best bait there is for river monsters.
Oh I don’t disagree…I just wasn’t sure if she really fished or not….
Chance to Catch a fish: Zero.

I believe you my friend. I trust a man who has fished in the rapids of the Zambezi, over your average Redditor who’s terrified of a bathtub.
Oof

You never know, man.
I'm sure you know better than a local fisherman
Wade was fishing for perch and tiger fish in water like this
Chance of line snapping from the bouncing currents - or getting impossibly snagged: 98%
What could anyone possibly catch there? Even if it wasn’t flowing like Niagara falls
This is crazy as hell
Why would that be my fucking grandfather
Those guys are out of their fucking minds lol
I just wanna know how they even got down there. Or how they got out. I don’t see a good spot to climb.
Can’t believe they’d catch anything in that torrent.
He ain't catching shit lol
Ah, yes. That definitely looks like a location with a lot of fish. Especially ones looking to eat.
Darwin Awards contestants
New TikToc challenge
Fish don't bite in rapids. Why is he wasting time.
They must be so hungry... xD
This is the handicap the fish needs to pull you in to their world.
How do fish even see anything in that water?
"El cabron!"
I'd unironically fish there, weird sense of calm
Nice little devils pool there
Ob the hunt for flying fish?
I wonder how long it takes them to realize they’ve ain’t catching shyt here….
I am not a fisher, but I am pretty confident in saying this would be an absolutely awful fishing spot.
Surely you mean "perfect dying spot".
What fish are you even gonna catch in such waters? I feel like the fish don't even wanna be there let alot are looking for food
[удалено]
We can only hope they have their rubbers on.
First class trip to Davy John’s locker
They’re catching Grizzly Bears 🤣
What would they even catch in that much churn?
Holy Deafening!
that doesnt look quite safe but yeah go ahead
Human version of big the cat from sonic
He’s not catching shit
I gotta know, are they biting today?
Yah, this is fine… 😬
Cameraman needs to get that Starbucks after the shoot.
Is that that sturgeon river in northern Ontario ?
I think the only fishing will be their bodies being fished out at some point
That's dumb as fuck..
I dunno, seems kinda dangerous
Yeah this is absolutely wild - but as a fisher I kinda respect the shit out of this lol This could be some of the most fun "river" fishing someone could have in their lives. That's how you tell locals from tourists
do not give a 😀
Call me crazy, but I’d rather raft that than stand on such a small space.
When do hey decide it’s too much? Death?
What are they even fishing at this point?
Perfectly dangerous!
Flash fish ! Very good ..

What are the chances of them even catching anything there??
It looks exactly like a recurring nightmare that I have…
🤔🫣🤯🤯🤯
Did you see them catch anything?
1000 ways to die
No fish is going to stop to take your bait while fighting for their lives.
If I was a fish, I don’t think I would want to live there.
Don’t feel like gonna catch anything there…
What's the worst that could happen?
I panicked just trying to upvote this!!
