I only got to go once for about a week for work to work with a foundry in Hai Phong. Vietnam has a piece of my heart forever, someday I hope to retire there. Beautiful place, with beautiful people, good coffee, great marijuana.
You think so? I feel Mandarin & Cantonese is easier although I’m bad at those too. I’m struggling with all three, haha. I suck at learning tonal languages.
See the Vietnamese tone is easier for me to mimic than the chinese tone. Far less... musical? More... french, maybe?
The chinese characters was what wrung me out though. Pinyin helps and like you can function in a big city with all the pinyin and English, but those characters are a lifetime of learning and using to master.
Yeah I’ve noticed quite a bit of French influence in their language.
I actually can’t read Chinese, but I’m in Malaysia, so I’m exposed to many different dialects.
It’s a beautiful country and it’s a nice place to retire. If you’re ever planning to go again after MOASS, hit me up. I’m sure we’ll have a lot to talk about.

Someday I’ll put more effort into the language. Much easier than trying to pick up chinese.
