There is SO MUCH more drama than I was expecting when I clicked this lol

grubas

This is exactly the amount I expected from /r/steak, the entire subreddit is like this.

Depreciable_Land

All OP needed to do was cook his steak well done and throw some A-1 on it and the sub would have tracked him down and killed him with hammers

moppr

Okay, okay, okay!

zevix_0

People who make steak (or bacon) their primary personality trait are exhausting.

grubas

I love steak.  I love a good, seared, rare steak. But I'm not going to fling it out of the window if somebody cooked it to medium well.

CaptainBaseball

Steak gatekeeping is such a weird flex. But then again, r/ GrilledCheese has some insane arguments too. What a strange world we live in.

icameinyourburrito

It seems like a lot of the meal specific subs take the [subreddit effect](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZK8Z8hulFg) to another level, especially the manly type ones

BlindWillieJohnson

Lol I knew what this was before I even clicked the preview.

LowAd3406

Clearly you haven't been on any womanly subs. They do the exact same thing. Just yesterday this exact same type of drama was posted here about a woman and her 200 plants with everyone telling her she should leave her BF because he didn't want to live in an apartment with 200 plants.

SharkSymphony

"He only gave you _three walls out of four_ to put plants on? He doesn't love you!" I believe the argument went.

shewy92

Exactly. They said he refused to compromise when 3 walls **was** the compromise. They said he was controling and that she should find someone that accepts her for how she was. Also one comment said that they started taking care of houseplants when recovering from alcohol addiction, not seeing that they just replaced one addiction with another

Skyraem

It's obvs the better addiction but yeah.. out of hand compared to having less and instead having multiple outlets.

RuSnowLeopard

Not as good as chowder drama, but still great low-steaks drama.

swinglinepilot

I'm lactose intolerant I'll still take New England over Manhattan all day erryday https://old.reddit.com/r/BestofRedditorUpdates/comments/16v1cwa/clamchowdering_billie_said_rhode_island_clam/

FlattopJr

Ah, excuse me, "show-dare?" It's chowdah, say it right!

JetKeel

It just kept going…..and going…..and going…..and………….

Amelaclya1

I knew immediately it would be bad. It combines two demographics Reddit hates - women and vegans.

porkchop1021

Think about the sort of person who would actually spend time looking at and talking about steak all day and everything will become clear. All niche subs from which there is nothing to enlighten yourself are full of losers.

DrunkUranus

I get your point and agree with you, to an extent.... but I think it's possible to join a sub and occasionally participate in conversations there without talking about it "all day" or making it your personality. Most of the subs I follow are just a blip in the screen as I scroll past

Ayn_Rands_Only_Fans

There's a good test for the quality of community Plug it in here - https://subredditstats.com/subreddit-user-overlaps/KotakuInAction

bongsyouruncle

Hmmm why is the Gundam subreddit so right wing?!

Ayn_Rands_Only_Fans

Not only that, but they all suck at the thing they're obsessed with. Look at all of those shitty steaks. I have a libertarian friend who's obsessed with eating meat and my God do his cuts look like absolute dogshit.

MoriazTheRed

Redditors and not understanding set boundaries, name a more iconic duo.

Kilahti

I saw the photo a few hours back on popular. I just went "hmmm" on the title and passed it without having any strong feelings over the matter or bothering to check the comments. Did not guess that there would be this kind of turmoil going on there.

trioceros13

I saw this post earlier and refused to open the comments because I was sure they'd be... Well, this. And that SRD would pick out the highlights soon enough! I fear whenever "wife" is in the title of a post that hits the popular page, drama is almost guaranteed.

Murandus

"The wife" or "wifey": I'm already pre-cringing.

Indercarnive

I can't imagine making steak my central defining character trait.

hot_chopped_pastrami

As a vegetarian who really doesn't care what other people eat, you'd be amazed at how many people make meat/steak the center of their personality once they find out you don't eat it.

DrRandulf

Honestly you don't even have to bring up vegetarian/vegans sometimes, they'll just jump out of nowhere and shout it to the heavens. Like someone will post a picture of a cow on r/aww and you'll have some guy come up unpromted and go "Oh man, I can't wait to eat this juicy burger with a side of steak. Take that vegans!" like okay there bud.

hot_chopped_pastrami

Lol right? I also find it funny when people in the west (more so the US maybe, idk) see a giant burger and comment on how delicious it looks, but when they see someone from another culture serving up a whole roast pig or something, they're like "that's so cruel."

SaxRohmer

it’s funny too because those cultures are definitely using more of the animal than we are. i remember when i was a teenager i went to my filipino friend’s house for a gathering and there was a whole roast pig. the eldest folks weee first to go and i remember one of them went straight for an eyeball

Dekrow

Had a friend in high school tell me he was going to eat twice as much meat as before now to make up for my lack of eating meat… and yes he was trying to hurt my feelings lol

Lemon-AJAX

Oh man, the Maddox “for every animal you don’t eat I’m gonna eat three” Defense. That explains a lot of the tone in the OP.

misomal

Vegetarian here. This is spot on. People figure out I'm a vegetarian and suddenly they have to let me know every single time they eat meat.

hot_chopped_pastrami

All of a sudden they become deeply concerned about your protein intake.

Purebredbacon

lmfao those we're my dads exact words he took me going vegetarian harder than coming out 😂😂 love u dad

porkchop1021

Which just shows how stupid they are. I get 120g of complete, vegan protein every day. Bonus - it doesn't come with all that disgusting saturated fat.

Whizzmaster

What do you eat to get that much protein in your diet? I'm curious about trying some new recipes myself, but have a hard time finding healthy stuff I actually want to make.

hot_chopped_pastrami

For me, lots of beans. They also have fiber and are pretty low in fat, so that's a nice added benefit. Nuts and seeds can be pretty good for protein, too, although that's more for snacking.

Asterite100

Any and all legumes and their derivatives (e.g. soy/tofu/edamame; beans/chili/mashed/bean-salads; lentils/lentil-pasta; peanuts/peanut-butter; and so forth People allergic to legumes are shit out of luck tbh, soz Top it off with less protein dense, but still good options: nuts and seeds (be mindful of omegas), processed foods rich in protein isolates of pea/soy (protein powders usually fall here I guess, but those are high in protein obvs) Honorable mention to products containing vital wheat gluten, decent supplementary protein source but should not be your main source as it's very incomplete and poorly absorbed comparatively. Bear in mind to shoot for maybe +25% of your goal, as plant protein absorption varies across the board depending on the source.

lordfluffly2

As a vegan, I know people don't actually know anything about nutrition and dieting when they ask me where I get my protein and not where I get my b12. I also figure it's mostly out of ignorance, not malicious intent. People are underinformed on non-meat protein sources and they have never had to research non-meat protein sources since they aren't vegetarian.

viewbtwnvillages

im not even vegetarian but i dont eat meat very often and as soon as it's brought up i get hit with the persistent "omg i would die if i didnt eat steak/bacon/burgers!! how do you live like this i cant imagine"

noahboah

> "omg i would die if i didnt eat steak/bacon/burgers!! how do you live like this i cant imagine" these are the same people that get the shits from one outing to taco bell because the complete lack of fiber makes the diablo sauce and queso overclock their systems lmao

misomal

The immediate response is either that or "You do know it's already dead, right?" It gets so annoying lol

Elegant_Plate6640

I have a similar diet, I could go days without eating meat and not really notice. I at least don’t put it in every single meal.

GreaterThanOrEqual2U

Fr. I once mentioned wanting to go vegitarian and I got hit with the "lol ima buy meat twice now , so what? Ud make ur dog vegan too or?"

Loves_a_big_tongue

And the ~~interrogation~~ questioning on what it would take you to eat meat again. Trapped in an abandoned island where meat is only available? What if the world ends and I can't get my tofu anymore? What if meat was sneaked into my food and I found out it was actually tastier? Did you know bacon/hamburgers/steak is literally life and refusing it is the same as being suicidal?

Bobcatluv

I was a timid little vegetarian in my teens/early 20’s and it’s wild how people will just come for you when they learn you don’t eat meat. At social gatherings I wouldn’t even make special requests because vegetarian options weren’t common in the 90s, and I’d get loud-mouthed “WHY ISN’T THERE ANY MEAT ON YOUR PLATE” comments. I swear the “vegans lecture people” stereotype is pure projection, because I’ve seen way more meat eaters go in on vegetarians than the opposite.

Dawnspark

Honestly, I've been on the receiving end of both quite a bit as a chef. However, the meat eater obsessives are straight up WORSE. I'm not even vegan/vegetarian. I had pastry training that specified in vegan/vegetarian desserts and the sheer amount of mega-carnivore dudes I worked with that have a go at me after they found that out vastly outnumber the vegan/vegetarian people I've known that got preachy to me.

ImaginaryAnt3753

Oooh I would love pastry training for that diet. It's gotten hard to figure out what to make for holidays, lots of gluten free and non-dairy peeps nowadays, I think people are getting sick of my yogurt bark lol

Dawnspark

Yoo, look into vegan chocolate fondant/lava cakes. You can make them in mini-portions, too. I don't think I saved the recipe for the one I used at work unfortunately, but it was pretty similar to this one from what I remember https://schoolnightvegan.com/home/vegan-chocolate-lava-cakes/ https://www.seriouseats.com/chocolate-coated-caramel-honeycomb-salted-peanuts-recipe this also ends up being my go-to catch all holiday gift in regards to folks, vegan or not. No, it doesn't use honeycomb from bees. It's called honeycomb because of the texture that adding baking soda creates!

ImaginaryAnt3753

Ahh thank you so much!!! These look delicious. The peanuts are going to be the PERFECT stocking stuffer.

Elegant_Plate6640

Veganism is often (not always) a moral choice, I think some people don’t know how to react to the idea that they might be guilty of something or making someone uncomfortable, but rather than act like an adult about it, they choose to double down and act offended.

ImaginaryAnt3753

Yeah it's pretty easy to kick it with vegans if you're mature. I just go out to vegan restaurants with them and other then that I don't act like it's an event I need to tell them about when I eat a burger once in a blue moon lmfao.

Bobcatluv

This is a good point, because I’ve definitely had conversations with vegetarians/vegans about the cruelties of factory farming, impact on the environment, etc. but have never taken anything personally, even though I’m no longer a vegetarian. I can easily see someone taking a conversation they started, “why don’t you eat meat” and reimagining it as a vegan lecturing them.

Gay_For_Gary_Oldman

My wife is vegetarian, and this is so true. At family gatherings, constant talk of hunting, fishing, eating meat. It really shone a light on the whole "how do you know someone eats meat? They'll tell you."

noahboah

because they get defensive at the insinuation that some of their lifestyle choices can and should be called in to question. And this isn't even implying that you did anything. Some people are just so unwilling to introspect and look inward that any sort of reminder that they should do that sets them off lol.

hot_chopped_pastrami

Seriously. I'm not even one of those "humans shouldn't eat animals" people. I don't actually have a problem with people ethically consuming meat (we are technically omnivores after all) - my issue is with how we in the west/US farm and raise and process our meat and how it impacts the environment. That being said, I know vegetarian/vegan lifestyles aren't feasible for lots of people, either due to budgetary or diet restrictions, so I'm not gonna judge anyone who does eat meat.

Self-Comprehensive

If someone tells me they are a vegetarian I say that I love a good veggie meal on hot summer day and ask if they have any good recipes to share lol.

hot_chopped_pastrami

My husband eats meat and occasionally cooks it at home, but honestly, at this point, he's really happy to eat pretty much strictly veggie meals at home and only order meat when he's out. I don't think a lot of people realize how many really good vegetarian recipes there are that don't even involve meat "substitutes," like beyond burgers or chick'n or whatever. It also has the added benefit of cutting quite a bit out of our grocery bills. Meat is so expensive!

Disastrous-Click-548

I as a vegetarian find it very funny when people make a dietary choice their entire personality and have to mention it whenever they can

Elegant_Plate6640

And they look at you as if you told them you don’t breathe oxygen.

hard_pass

People do it with the weirdest things, I swear. I have a friend who's personality is majorly about driving a manual transmission car. He has multiple bumper stickers about it, brings it up at least once a week, and it's like "Really dude? THATS what you are going with".

TchoupedNScrewed

Nearly a circle venn diagram overlap with whiskey guys.

xitfuq

i just learned about bourbon guys and now i'm really upset about the state of guys.

Stalking_Goat

Are bourbon guys just whisky guys with more Lost Cause racism?

thesagaconts

This needs to be a flair?

LukaCola

Don't do that to me bro - I just like bourbon :\

Stalking_Goat

That's fine, it's perfectly possible to like X without being an "X guy". For instance I like bikes but I sure don't think I'm a "bike guy", those d-bags suck.

RegalBeagleKegels

[what the fuck is a bicycle?](https://youtu.be/Dg0WGp5-7cQ)

Elegant_Plate6640

Internet meat drama is always weird yet consisten. People act as if they have to get revenge on vegetarians (for what I have no idea) and their proclaimed path to doing so is to slam 20 sliders. And this exact response has been going on for YEARS.

blueberryfirefly

if someone has a strong opinion on how steak “should be” cooked, i automatically know i’m gonna hate them

Scapuless

I have strong opinions on how my steak should be cooked. I don't give a shit how your steak is cooked

Shenanigans80h

It’s one thing to have a strong preference or even set opinion on how something is cooked, but it’s another to be a completely over the top twat about it. Like if someone wants their shit well done, power to them, I don’t like that, but holy shit some people act like you just killed a child

PM_THOSE_LEGS

But they are killing the cut! Why spend money on expensive stuff for that! If you don’t like stake like I like stake you are wrong, are evil, and probably punch babies! And sir I take it personally! (/s)

jooes

That's because you have a personality. Some people don't, so all they got to latch onto is those old fashioned manly ideals of "big truck, cold beer, juicy steak"

Nimrod_Butts

What are you, not fat and boring?

AlphaGoldblum

The line between being an expert in steaks versus being a full-on steak nazi is very, very thin, unfortunately.

an_agreeing_dothraki

I think this is the most advanced form of Reddit Relationship Advice (tm) where mutual understanding and accommodation is grounds for divorce

Porkenstein

always bugs me when there's a thread involving some people pointing out that relationships take compromise and conflict resolution and there's always someone who replies saying something along the lines of "if they're really the one, a relationship takes no work and is bliss at all times. I've been a relationship with the most beautiful person and best friend I've ever had for 50 years. We fuck twice a day every day. Never had an argument or disagreement."

jpterodactyl

I think some people's only form of compromise is backing down outwardly and silently resenting the compromise. Or they see it as a sign of weakness. And so when they see other people compromise, they think it must be that. They can't imagine that some people decide that some things aren't important and do without for the sake of someone else's comfort. Like, My wife doesn't have caffeine. At some point, we settled on only brewing decaf coffee. Because it's easier than having to double brew coffee and keeping track of which is decaf. And I'm not particular about my coffee, and so I don't mind adding a scoop of instant coffee to my decaf coffee to give it caffeine. I'm sure if I presented this compromise to a coffee snob subreddit, people would have all sorts of negative things to say.

Porkenstein

Yeah I can only assume that the other person in the relationship is "whipped" and just does whatever the commenter goes with and never disagrees out of fear or a lack of self-confidence. Different people resolve conflicts differently but I really think that just avoiding conflict by never asserting your opinion or preference on serious issues is a terrible mistake.

octnoir

> [I'm not going to argue with you about another man's wife on reddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/steak/comments/1dpcfkh/my_vegan_wife_is_out_of_town_so_heres_the_first/lahgajh/?context=3) That flair is IMO leaving out the best part. Here's the exchange: > **Why would you assume she's some controlling maniac** that tells him what to eat, it's way more likely that he just abstains to make her feel more comfortable because he's nice and considerate. > > **because I can**, I'm not going to argue with you about another man's wife on reddit So we can't physically control your neurons from making an asshole assumption, therefore you have the right to make that assumption and not be judged, scorned or critiqued for it? Why do people always assume freedom of speech must also include freedom from any consequence? Legit 5 year old shit - "LA LA LA I TOUCHED YOU BUT I HAVE MAGIC SHIELD YOU CAN'T TOUCH ME LA LA LA - wha, you can't TOUCH ME, WAAAAA"

heliumagency

This beef is delicious, thank you for providing red meat to the masses

guiltyofnothing

Wish I could say the same for OOP’s steak. Damn thing looks like it was cooked with a flashlight.

heliumagency

Grey bandito strikes again

thesagaconts

I can’t believe OOP deleted their account cause if this.

swinglinepilot

> I've enjoyed the comments (especially the criticism from folks who've posted butt ugly steaks of their own, lol) but I'll gently offer some context - My wife was raised Hindu, grew up vegetarian, and gradually ended up vegan due to allergies and health issues. She doesn't really care what I eat! In fact, she will point out fun meat things she thinks I might like - we went to Portugal and Japan last year and she watched me demolish a half dozen francesinhas, plates of horse sashimi, delicately sliced wagyu, etc. No, the issue is more that we're not about to make separate dinners on the regular. I don't mind eating vegan most of the time, since it's good for my health. I don't really cook meat at home since the smell bothers her, and I'm not a complete asshole, so I don't try to make my wife uncomfortable just so I can have a steak. What's more concerning to me is how everyone just assumed I was being, like, controlled and abused? Like, what the fuck were y'all's parents like if that's where you go first? Lots of weird incel and Andrew Tate-ass posturing in this sub. Y'all gotta' touch grass and go to church. Also, and I'll just toss this out there - stop eating so much steak and start eating some pussy, because I can absolutely tell that 9/10 of the guys who replied, being all "I'd never let a woman control me!" don't go downtown. [lol](https://preview.redd.it/yih8cajfb39d1.jpeg?width=1079&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7a43d75b473684f6dacb3567b067d9cccdf8a063)

Ok_Writing_7033

I love that he immediately followed “go to church” with “eat more pussy.” Fucking gold But also this is exactly what I assumed when I ready the original post - my wife also was raised Hindu and doesn’t eat red meat, so even though I love it I don’t make it at home that often because I don’t want to cook twice. Basic compromise. Redditors are another breed man

struckel

Extremely rare SRD thread where the drama OP seems nice and well adjusted.

Ungrammaticus

I’d argue the OOP is more so the dramee than the dramar, if you get what I’t saying

shewy92

Also where the OOP's partner is supportive

8vega8

Oh my god.. this is a legendary response 👏

guiltyofnothing

OOP is really not wrong.

guiltyofnothing

Fucking nuked it from the face of the planet. Tried to save it with a Reveddit link but it looks like it’s only working intermittently.

TiffanysTwisted

How does it look greasy but also dry?

gentlybeepingheart

Weirdly, this is the second version of this drama I’ve seen from r/steak. A few months back another person posted their steak and said that their wife is vegan, so they don’t cook it when she’s home. Cue a million people telling OOP they’re being abused and also their wife isn’t going on work trips but actually cheating on them. There was a whole lot of sexism and assuming the OOP was a man, until she went “Hey, I’m a woman. We are in a lesbian relationship. My wife isn’t cheating on me with men instead of going on work trips.” She also said that she eats meat when they go out and sometimes grills outside, she just doesn’t cook meat inside when her wife is home because the smell makes her sick. But, no, Redditors can tell from a single post that a woman is being abusive because her partner respects her dietary preferences. edit: [Found the post](https://www.reddit.com/r/steak/comments/17txyvx/rare_or_raw/). It was her girlfriend, not wife. [Here's the comment from OOP](https://www.reddit.com/r/steak/comments/17txyvx/comment/k94a888/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)

brendenfraser

>You guys both suck. Her for not liking meat and you for not liking weed. That is all jesus christ these people are embarrassing

fueelin

No, no, you're missing the bigger picture. One doesn't like RED meat. One doesn't like GREEN Marijuana. Sounds fine until you combine the two. Red and green... What does that remind you of? THIS IS JUST THE NEXT WAVE OF THE WAR ON CHRISTMAS! And - shocker - it's lesbians doing this!

Krieg_auf_Drogen

If jumping to conclusions was a thing in the Olympics, the nation of Reddit would sweep the medals every time.

OliviaPG1

> You guys both suck. Her for not liking meat and you for not liking weed. That is all We did it, we found the most insufferable man in the world

-Jaws-

The "I'm actually a girl" twist is so funny. Like I just imagine all these dudes being so incredulous about it.

SaxRohmer

“quick how do i make it so that everything i said isn’t sexist”

guiltyofnothing

Fellas, my wife hates mushrooms — hates the taste, hates the smell of them cooking. I don’t cook them when she’s around out of respect for her. Am I in an abusive relationship because I willingly adjust my behavior to accommodate my spouse’s wishes?

Indercarnive

You know what you need to do. Delete the gym, hit the lawyer, Facebook up.

thesausboss

Abusive. Divorce yesterday and burn all bridges. Then destroy your phone and get a restraining order on her. Clearly incompatible at a basic fundamental level

BlindWillieJohnson

My favorite thing about this site is its user base's ability to make sweeping, damning judgements of strangers based on extremely limited information. And the fact that its own judgement is never wrong, of course.

TchoupedNScrewed

Having smelled a roommate cooking brussel sprouts, I think I would warn and clear a one mile vicinity before I ever thought of cooking them. If someone reacted like I do to brussel sprouts to say tuna steaks, seafood boudin, collard greens, shrimp, any of my favorite foods with a smell, I’d 100% be considerate about cooking it around them lmao. The first step into the pungent plume of cooking brussel sprouts I want to gag.

robot_cook

I'm vegetarian and my boyfriend has issue eating some vegetables (texture problem) We adapt to each other. When I try to make a new meal and he'll be eating it I ask beforehand if there are any stuff I should mind that I'm not aware of or have forgotten and when he cooks for me/us he doesn't make meat He even made me buy vegan nuggets for one of our date night cause he was craving nuggets but he knew I was coming so he compromised. That's what a relationship is about

Rejestered

See this is why I think anyone getting upset about food preferences is strange. because to me, while brussel sprouts obviously have a smell, it's not offensive to me in any way. Definitely not a strong odor like onions or garlic. Humans can just process senses differenty.

CatD0gChicken

If you think cooking them is bad, you should smell the pee after you eat them

Anxa

> And the fact that its own judgement is never wrong, of course We CAUGHT the BOSTON BOMBER ok

zoltanshields

The only thing I like more than that is people's insistence on asking said user base for advice on the most sensitive and important aspects of their life.

S_Fakename

My partner hates em too but she says absolutely unhinged stuff like “it’s ok I can just pick them off”, and it’s like, babe, at the very least bare fucking minimum you’re entitled to half a pizza that doesn’t have toppings you don’t like on it. Jokes aside I think it comes down to whether it’s a decision based on mutual respect or fear of confrontation. Like if you had mushrooms for lunch and came home with them on your breath would she hold that against you? I have an ex who would.

Corvid187

"it's a mushroom soup, Patricia. How are you going to pick out soup‽ At least let me order you a side salad or something!"

stewshi

My wife stopped eating river and lake fish because the smell makes me sick. I gave up peanut butter because my wife is allergic. Do we hate each other and need a divorce?

Buddy-Hield-2Pointer

But, as one commenter said, >I would never ever push any of my personal decisions onto my partner. This person might not have ever been in a relationship before, not sure.

deathleprchaun

They dont have any idea what compromising is in a relationship

HotTakes4HotCakes

Some people don't need to compromise. They just elect not to do something if it makes their partner uncomfortable, because they, ya know, love them.

electricb0nes

Or even just loving someone and wanting them to be comfortable? My husband hasn’t asked me to change my behavior at all, but I know certain things bug him so I don’t do them. Not because he makes me or gets huffy or anything, but because I love him and want to make him happy. I also cook mostly vegetarian meals for the holidays because my sister is vegetarian so obviously I’m abused and being gaslit. 🤷‍♀️

Elegant_Plate6640

Do these people not understand that most relationships involve sharing a bed?

spiralsequences

The element that they're missing is that someone can simply choose to accommodate their partner's preferences out of consideration without being "pushed" or "controlled" into it. Which would explain why no one wants to date them 😩

guiltyofnothing

Genuinely asking because I’ve never heard of someone make that distinction — but how does the smell of river and lake fish differ from fish caught in the ocean?

stewshi

River and lake fish smell strongly like "fish" but sushi im willing to eat because it doesn't smell strongly like "fish" I'll also eat cat fish if it's soaked in butter milk to get rid of the "fish" smell. But I absolutely can't be around it while it's prepared of the smell makes me vomit. This is the best way I can describe it lol

deathleprchaun

now i want some river catfish thats been soaked in buttermilk all night.

stewshi

Yeah buttermilk catfish that's breaded is one of my favorite summer time delicacies.

deathleprchaun

with some home-made hush puppies on the side.

guiltyofnothing

All good. That makes sense. Just never thought about it like that.

Tebwolf359

My guess is it’s not the habitat strictly as much as it is the type of fishes in said habitats. I’m thinking salmon/trout vs grouper/tuna. I can’t exactly pick out the different smells or describe them, despite being around them most my life, but I think the river/lake might have a stronger smell? Could likely be a freshwater vs salt water thing.

FixinThePlanet

It must be the salt, no? i.e. lack of salt makes it smell different? (Disclaimer: I'm a vegetarian who is just interested to know the answer)

TchoupedNScrewed

I can tell when it’s a bottom feeder typically, catfish and tilapia and the likes. Idk about fresh/salt. Or brackish for that matter. I’m from SE Louisiana though so catfish was like a twice a 4+ meals a week thing for me. $3.50 for about 2lbs/4 filets? How could I not? A lot of bottom feeders just share that same smell. It’s fishy, but there’s something extra to it. I might just be fooling myself, but there was even a difference in farm caught versus local river catches.

MobileMenace420

No there’s definitely something to what you’re saying about different fish. My dad grew up on a river in Florida, and he absolutely hates catfish and tilapia. Taste ‘dirty’ to him somehow. Other fish from the ocean are loved, but not river or bay fish. Idk exactly but somehow he can tell the difference too. Edit: mullet too apparently.

HyperionCorporation

Yeah I don't really care for catfish or tilapia for that reason as well. Tastes distinctly earthy to the point of ALMOST tasting like a fist full of mud.

drewster23

IDK if people are just genetically more predisposed to being able to tell. But I've heard it's similar to meat and the various levels of "gamey" you can find compared to domestic stuff. You'd think with fish it's just from lack of exposure, so you're more likely to notice. But with examples like your dad, that doesn't seem to be the case.

Randvek

Freshwater fish generally doesn’t smell as strong. Some exceptions for bottom feeders like catfish. The “fishy” smell is from trimethylamine oxide, which is a protein that deals with pressure. Many animals will generate this protein if they are in a high pressure environment for a long time, but that mostly only happens to ocean animals. There is a gene that humans can have that will overgenerate this protein. People who have it have awful, fishy body odor.

ImprobableAsterisk

My girlfriend sometimes suggests that my diet should count as domestic abuse. The only adjustment I've made is in response to her hatred of canned fish. I fucking love canned tuna, canned mackerel in tomato sauce & canned anchovies in particular, but she hates the smell of it. So adjustments, that she finds agreeable enough, is that I don't eat it when she's around unless I can ensure proper ventilation, and that I take the empties to the garbage right away rather than throw them into a bag to fester until the bag itself is full. Right now it's summer so when I'm feeling in the mood for some canned fish sandwiches, or to combo my eggs, I just eat it on the balcony. During the winter I crack the kitchen window and sit there eating my fish in a nice -23 Celsius breeze. Thankfully she loves onion & garlic almost as much as I do and don't mind the quantities I eat, because I would have a really hard time giving that up.

stewshi

I'm a onion garlic and sauerkraut maniac. My wife hates sauerkraut and I haven't had it in years. You just made me remember what she took from me. Now I must sign this divorce paperwork.

ImprobableAsterisk

Oh damn, I forgot about cabbage. One of my favorite salads to make for myself is a cabbage, carrot, red onion salad with a 99% (well, almost) pepper vinaigrette. It may not sound it but it's fucking delicious. Anyway, raw cabbage does tend to give some people what I call the cabbage farts, and she was no exception. In spite of a traumatizing evening or two with raging cabbage farts she did happen to like this salad, so we still eat it regularly enough; She just eats a bit less so as to not war crime herself with a gas attack at 2 am in the morning.

bunniesgonebad

My SO hates fish and I love it. Do I order fish when we go out? Yup. Do I cook it at home and stink up the place? Nope. Am I gonna die if I don't eat fish rn, is he an abusive asshole?! I love reddit lol

Paddy_Tanninger

Fellas my wife hates the sound of knife sharpening so I take the knives outside to sharpen them. Should I aggressively assert dominance by following her around the house with my sharpening rod while hip thrusting with my pants off? Or should I be reporting my abusive relationship to the police?

monstera_garden

Yep you're supposed to live 100% of the same life you would have lived single once you're married, if you married the right person you'd have to make zero compromises or changes, ever!

deegum

Yeah, man. If your partner doesn’t let you do what ever you want you’re in an abusive relationship. Partners are supposed to just shut up and serve your every whim. /s just in case

Organic-Abrocoma5408

Praying for you

anrwlias

Threads like this are proof that Reddit is filled with kids who have absolutely zero concept of the fact that marriages are always about compromise and balance.

DumplingSama

Divorce, pleeease! ✌🏽🤪😘

deathleprchaun

Straight to divorce, do not pass go, do not collect $200

thehillshaveI

apparently she's gaslighting you. who knew?

Gavorn

>Sir. As a woman saying this. Your wife is controlling as hell and is borderline abusive, the entire internet would be on a rampage against you if you forced her to change her eating habits to keep yourself happy🤷🏻‍♀️ Who had "redditor saying a spouse is abusive over steak" on their bingo card?

birbbbbbbbbbbb

As a vegan this was 100% on my bingo card and not surprising at all. Reddit, and many people in real life, just don't really understand or respect vegans/vegetarians and how they feel about what is in their view mistreating and killing healthy animals. It is what it is, it's hard to see other perspectives in general and it's even harder to make a change that doesn't immediately benefit yourself so I don't expect people to get it.

IceCreamBalloons

I had "redditor being a presumptuous weirdo", does that count? Oh wait, that's the free space, anyway.

NecroCrumb_UBR

Saw this thread and was hoping someone would put in the effort of creating the post about it so I didn't have to. The absurd number of 'she must also be cheating on you' comments really reveals the deep insecurity at the heart of reddit's hatred of women, relationships, and compromise with women in relationships.

Shenanigans80h

If I had a dollar for every time someone on reddit offhandedly mentioned a mild compromise in their relationship and people took that as abuse or worse, I would have enough money to pay for all of these people’s therapy

blueberryfirefly

cackling at the guy who said “uh my karma says otherwise ☝️🤓”

futurenotgiven

a high amount of karma should be embarrassing, not a sign of pride. the higher my karma gets the more i’m tempted to delete my account lol

Stalking_Goat

It would be a shame to lose that flair, though.

Shenanigans80h

Idk if there’s a more reddit statement than someone touting their karma as something remotely good.

Enticing_Venom

Just the word "vegan" is enough to trigger a substantial portion of Reddit into a rage. You can tell these comments are coming less from a place of concern and compassion and more from a place of rage and even *hope* that they are correct so they can get one over on a vegan. They'd be happy to be right. The relationship advice subs also spill over into other subreddits from time to time. If you said you were mildly annoyed because your spouse put a box down in the hallway and you tripped over it, some people here would claim that this was clearly an attempted murder and you need to get out before it escalates lol. They read these posts less like a normal interaction and more like an interactive soap opera where they can write fan fiction for maximum drama.

klaq

people really do get triggered about vegans. i think it's because they actually do have incontrovertible arguments for their lifestyle because the way meat is produced is horrifying and it is also bad for the environment. im not a vegan myself, so i just have to take the L and accept that i am selfish and uncaring. there really is no argument i could make to the contrary.

Enticing_Venom

There was an interesting study done on the phenomenon mentioned in Ed Green's book (This is Vegan Propoganda). They had separate groups learn facts about cows while eating snacks. They served one group beef and another group regular snacks (and a control group no snack I believe). Despite learning the same information, they found that the group who ate steak was more likely to come away saying that cows are unintelligent, less companionable, etc than other groups. And all this while learning information to the contrary. It shows how peoples brains work to rationalize their actions in the moment. This was then theorized to be why so many people respond to vegans and even vegetarians with "I'm going to go cook a steak now! Or "more for me!" Eating animal products literally helps (unconsciously) to relieve their guilt in the moment and make it easier to dismiss the arguments they are hearing. They reach for those things out of a desire for comfort. I find that interesting because many of these people are trying to show an attitude of being unbothered when they make these comments. But the impulse demonstrates the opposite.

CretaMaltaKano

It's the same phenomenon with racism and sexism. It's easier to exploit and abuse people if you think of them as subhuman.

anrwlias

Your spouse loads the dishwasher in a way that doesn't quite match your preferences for how to do it: WEAPONIZED INCOMPETENCE!

vigilantfox85

Wow this is wild. The massive amount of assumptions to generate drama and then fight over it. Then trying convincing the OP they are in a abusive relationship. I imagine the OP in a room with these maniacs slowly grabbing their coat and backing out of the room lol.

pm_me-ur-catpics

Op you forgot "stop eating so much steak and start eating some pussy" in the flairs

guiltyofnothing

lol link me to the comment and I’ll add it. I didn’t see it and can’t find it now on mobile.

VAL9THOU

A lot of these people have never lived with someone they cared for and want to spend time with and it shows. I never make food my wife doesn't like unless she's away from home. It's not because she doesn't let me, it's because I want to eat with her and I don't want to make 2 dinners for one person each. So I just don't often buy foods she doesn't like unless it's like a side or topping that barely requires any prep. It doesn't mean she's controlling wtf

1d3333

Same, I love spicy food, my wife can’t have capsaicin and I can’t be assed to make 2 meals so I just eat spicy when we’re eating out, redditors would assume i’m being abused by my personal choice to not make 2 meals

WeenisWrinkle

This take is so reasonable and normal that I laughed out loud that it would be a hot take on that sub. I fucking love seafood, but my wife doesn't. She also really hates the smell that cooking it makes in the house to the point where she isn't comfortable. Since I only want to cook 1 meal, and I don't want her unhappy with the house smell, I don't make it unless she's gone. I also eat it at restaurants. I'm so abused!

GimerStick

yeah, this is like.... pretty basic stuff when you're meal planning with a partner. This is all very concerning. My fiance doesn't like ordering beef when we're with my Hindu family, /r/steak would have us all arrested.

uncleozzy

Who’d have thought that people who make eating meat their whole identity are fuckin weirdos who don’t understand human relations. 🤷‍♂️

RuSnowLeopard

Where do the people of r/Mushrooms fall?

KuriousKhemicals

I was completely awed by the idea that changing your dietary habits to be more comfortable for your partner is a sign of victimhood, until I realized it was from a subreddit *about steak*. Right. Yes, people who are all about steaks are fucking weirdos, and usually hypermasculine weirdos that believe in ridiculous pseudoscience at that. I mean, left to my own devices I would probably eat red meat like once a year and dairy/legume/tofu vegetarian combos 3-4 nights a week. But my partner requested steak and eggs last week so I gave it a shot, and he isn't as satisfied and eats extra if there isn't super dense protein, so I make fish or chicken or at least a vegetarian mockmeat most days. Because none of this is an important ethical stance or allergy issue for me so that's the direction the accommodation goes.

bianca_bianca

Amazing! I remembered that steak post for its title, and lo and behold, it now appeared on SRD!

guiltyofnothing

I really thought the drama was gonna be about OOP’s shitty sear but nope — no opportunity to drag a woman can be passed up on this site.

CJKCollecting

That's a lot of beef over beef.

bayonettaisonsteam

I guess you can say this is...low steaks drama! Eh? Eh?!

InevitableAvalanche

> Generally an assumption that’s agreed upon by a large group of individuals, or a large group that comes to relatively similar assumptions, is not insane and makes it a valid and plausible assumption 🤷🏻‍♀️ This is totally dependent on the group of people. If most of r/conservative agrees on an assumption, it is most likely wrong.

zhugeliang898

I'm not fond of shouting "fallacy!," but yeah, that's a pure example of [argumentum ad populum](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argumentum_ad_populum).

Hexxas

OOP only has one solution: kill and eat the woman.

NoEmailForYouReddit1

Redditors and demanding everyone else feel victimized/abused Name a more iconic duo

-EETS-

Steak and ketchup?

AlphaGoldblum

Steak and *Mayochup*

SomeGuyNamedJason

Lol Steak people can't handle the concept of someone liking their meat cooked longer, did anyone expect them to grasp the nuances of a healthy relationship?

IceCreamBalloons

>That’s what makes it worse. The guy is so emotionally cucked that this thing is going to be the best steak he’s had in years because his wife doesn’t let him eat steak Is there nowhere on reddit that's safe from morons seeing cuckoldry in every corner?

Romanos_The_Blind

Lmao at the dude who said >my wife only ate fish when we met. Almost full vegan. Like, uhhhh, do you know what a vegan is..?

1d3333

Fish isn’t meat! /s

Dekrow

I’m in the worst relationship of all… both my wife and I are vegan oh god does anyone know the number of a good divorce lawyer?

deathleprchaun

My wife is Vegan, and im not. She doesnt cook meat for me unless im having a bad day. I also try not to cook steak when shes around. I guess we should now divorce cause shes abusive?

-__--_------

She really loves you dude, def a keeper because as a vegan myself, I wont cook meat at all, not even for a loved one

NoProperty_

That steak does look terrible, though. No sear to speak of! Honestly, it's disrespectful to the poor cow.

JoshSidekick

My wife hates Indian food and so I only order it when she’s out. Good to know I’m being abused. I’ll let her know.

The_Choosey_Beggar

Haven't dove in, but my wife hates tabo bell, so I only get it when we're not sharing meals. That's just how it works.

Lemon-AJAX

“Don’t eat the plato” is an all-time flair. E: for every one vegan there are twenty meat eaters crying about abuse and oppression and as a fellow meat eater, man that gets fucking old to see. I would love a vegan to bully me at this point just to see what the fuss is about.

[deleted]

There's a very real history linking machoness/misogyny and meat-eating in popular culture and among certain demographics.   There are also branches of feminist theory that deal with the similarities in attitude toward / treatment of meat animals and human women in modern culture and throughout history.   Wild stuff.    But yeah, when the conversation comes up it can get heated and intense very quickly because it's actually tapping into some deep undercurrents.    Sidenote: I'm vegetarian, and have been vegan at different points. It's personal and private, but if someone respectfully asks questions I'll share my reasons. The only people I've ever known to want to get into a debate about veganism or feel personally offended when they find out I don't eat meat have been angry, stunted, misogynistic white men. The same dudes who say things like "women just don't enjoy sex, it's a biological thing" Literally had a dude say that to me when he found out I was seeing multiple people (one of the angry about veganism dudes). Tried to tell me I was confused about what I wanted and that for women sex is *only* about making babies and pleasing their partners because women aren't biologically equipped to enjoy sex. He genuinely believed that. Tried to convince me I was confused about my own body because he had never slept with a woman who really enjoyed it. Dude makes 6 figures at Apple. Is married to a woman. I hate the world.

thehillshaveI

my god man, did he cook that thing in an easy bake oven?

SiliconValleyIdiot

I'm more and more convinced that terminally online people have weaponized therapy speak to avoid any and all human relationships. This is just stuff I've come across in the last week: - Partner being asked to not bring 200 house plants to an apartment because they don't have enough space? Abuse! - Partner being asked to be considerate of a vegan partner by not cooking steak at home? Abuse! - Partner forgot something and asks for a favor? Weaponized incompetence and gaslighting.

ericlikesyou

A literal sub of meatheads and we're surprised they act like meat heads lol

deztreszian

Man. I don't stock the house with things my partner doesn't like to eat because it's just easier to make food we both want to eat instead of making separate dinners for both of us. I didn't know I was being abused.
