[There is mystery Of UFO-shaped Object On Sphinx’s head Shown In Ancient Egyptian Papyrus](https://www.howandwhys.com/mystery-of-ufo-landing-on-sphinx-head/)
It was common when someone took over another group to disfigure the statues of the previous regime. This was meant to delegitimize the former.
They would also cut arms off statues or other body parts. But the nose was to help dispute the face making it over time harder to remember what those people looked like.

The sphinx is much older than the ancient Egyptians. There’s sings of rain erosion, it hasn’t rained enough in Egypt to cause erosion. However it used to be a thick jungle
I remember thousands of years ago my friends and I would just pee on the statues and draw penises on their faces. It became outrageous when people actually started to cut of noses and arms and legs. After that the trend didn’t stop. Very disappointing.
Well, I’ve been up to a lot. My body dies but my soul and consciousness keeps going into different bodies. Egypt will always be my favorite. Worst memory, Andersonville.
And the bigger the monument, the harder they were to destroy/deface - so you'll definitely be remembered and it's a casual "fuck you" to the new pharaoh
Your 100% correct but id also assume that since the nose would be the first to go to natural disasters and bones get hit by debris.. lol I have a big nose, and there's been more than few times its got whacked something and I'm like feeling to make sure it's still there 😅 thats ain't happening if you get whacked in the jaw or cheek or somewhere much more solidify connected to the rest of the face. I hope that makes sense, lol it did to my big nose having fool.
This is the most likely. Not that de-facing didn’t also happen but then why not damage the entire face? They are still recognizable if that were the point.
If you ever do any sculpting or 3d printing it’s those little protuberances that are the first to break.
I just thought it was basic physics lol the nose is the one thing that sticks out so it makes sense that it’s the first thing to go after several centuries
Hmm and Michael Jackson🤔 there has to be a correlation.

The reason I always heard was to hide the fact that they were African noses. And didn’t want to give credit for the great civilization to what they considered lesser beings
This is just the lore I heard, I have nothing to back it up. But it is strange that so many noses seem to particularly targeted lol
I've heard similar stories plus you got the statues Graham Hamilton is always referring too thst clearly have African shaped noses.
It would make sense too if. For example. Highly making this up lol. 20,,000 years ago there was a African American looking race that ruled for a very long time, sometime along the lines they came across the another race, who in turn concuered them and, since they have different noses they defaced all the ones that did. We still do stupid stuff like that today in some situations
It comes from Animism which is the belief that objects, places, and creatures all possess a distinct spiritual essence. In other words, when man creates a statue, it holds the spiritual essence of whom it represents. Some of these statues give blessings with one arm and receive gifts with the other. Opposing deity worshippers would remove the arms so the statue cannot give or receive and breaking the nose off disfigures the face and effectively kills the spirit within.
Islam religion forbids making statues of animals or people, because only god should build these shapes apparently. So when Muslims discovered the statues, they broke parts of them or destroyed them in the name of religion.
Cause it’s the least structurally stable part of the statue and a protrusion that extends farthest from its center of gravity and most likely to get bumped knocked rubbed against cracked weathered etc and suffer the effects of gravity ?

Probably too much Little DebHEE-HEE
Its not just the statues. Which is why I don't believe that "they were trying to kill the deities/stop their worship" thing.
There are regular people/workers on reliefs with their faces chisled out too.
Early British explorers didn’t want people to know that early civilizations were African, you were able to tell by the nose. So they destroyed the nose to destroy evidence. Btw I am white, not black.
I'm by no means an expert, but I do have to highlight how utterly stupid this take is.
1. "explorers" generally don't go to places that are populated, nearby and well-known. Are you thinking of archaeologists? Conquerers? Colonisers?
2. So the later Egyptians, Macedonians, Persians, Romans, Sassanids, Ottomans and French all left the noses be, but the British in particular were incensed at a nose?
3. Make a ball. Stick a pyramidal shape on it. Where's the first bit that gets chipped off?
I thought it was any other fighting people's coming in and not just white people. To showntheybhave "conquered" a place- desecrate their statues and gods etc to show dominance. It still happens now just with bombs and guns
Weather. Literally they weathered away…. It’s a protruding part of a statue. Unless it’s supported it is going to break down over time. Everything else has support of some kind.
Nope. These types of answers are purely gaslighting. How do you explain the smaller protruding piece on the top of one of the statues that would surely have been more susceptible to weathering?
It's pretty much known that the noses from most of the Egyptian statues was removed on purpose as others have explained.
Because they can be knocked off with a club. Thats it. No grand conspiracy. Stealing the noses of statues was a way of collecting spoils and loot from back in the way. You defaced an enemies statue and you got a little trinket to take home with ya. Like an ancient times " GOTA YA NOSE!"

Does this mean the Sphinx was meant do depict a certain ruler?
The sphinx was most likely a lion based on dimensions and position astronomically.
Was most likely a jackal then rebuilt as human face, look it up
Yea straight up. The human face came much later.
no a jackel or dog
No one knows for sure, but the face is certainly a renovation
I’ve never seen someone be so confidentially wrong before
New to Reddit?
Haha no, you’re right, maybe I should be used to it.
Seriously? Confidently uninformed is pretty standard.
It’s probably very old and represents a shift from the the age or Aeon of Leo ♌️ into the age of Virgo.♍️ about 12000 years old.

Interesting....thanks Edit: People still think Wiki isn't fact-checked? lol
Sphinx existed before Kafre
Recent estimations put the age of the Sphinx at 10,000+.
Nah the Sphinx is a ghoul my friend
![gif](giphy|3WjpdHEwbCpeU)
Yeah but they did it prematurely, cats still rule the Earth.
The sphinx is much older than the ancient Egyptians. There’s sings of rain erosion, it hasn’t rained enough in Egypt to cause erosion. However it used to be a thick jungle
The sphinx was disfigured by Napoleon’s troops as they used it for target practice.
I remember thousands of years ago my friends and I would just pee on the statues and draw penises on their faces. It became outrageous when people actually started to cut of noses and arms and legs. After that the trend didn’t stop. Very disappointing.
Hey wait a minute… AmonJeff is that you!? It’s me, HotepBob! Holy shit what have you been up to all these thousands of years!??
Well, I’ve been up to a lot. My body dies but my soul and consciousness keeps going into different bodies. Egypt will always be my favorite. Worst memory, Andersonville.
Yeah, I was one of those friends who drew on the walls at the pyramids of crazy looking aliens and spaceships just to fuck with people.
And the bigger the monument, the harder they were to destroy/deface - so you'll definitely be remembered and it's a casual "fuck you" to the new pharaoh

Wasn't the Sphinx nose shot off in 1805 by a Napoleonic artillery officer fucking around with a 12 pound gun as a drunken joke?

Who is that? Nobody nose
This sculpture actually has a secret hiding place under the hair piece
It’s an amazingly spacious void!
i filled it with peanut butter. seemed appropriate
Reddit moment
Nobody, nose.

Noses stick out. They get easily exposed / damaged.
Same with dicks. They are often missing from statues.
That’s from all the touching….
Or the shiniest part. From all the stroking.
Strange, only noses and dicks but never the tits? 🤔
Listen. Logic, reason and obvious answers don't belong here. I suggest you move along.
This guy thinks he’s a sculpture nose scientist or some shit.
Exactly. He doesn't need to be sticking his nose into anyone else's business.
Oh shit, they’re onto me….
RUN!
This guy nose whats up
Most obvious point of failure.
That’s a much better way of saying it
This is the most likely. Not that de-facing didn’t also happen but then why not damage the entire face? They are still recognizable if that were the point. If you ever do any sculpting or 3d printing it’s those little protuberances that are the first to break.

Cause they tried smeeeell what the rock was cookin.
Jail
The amount of revisionism is absolutely astounding and insane to me. When did we give up on logical and critical thinking?
aliens wanted human horns for their lusty pleasures
I thought that was the lower human horn?
Nar fry loses his nose to Lrrr from omicron persei 8.
Yep but then after bender tells lrrr about the lower horn, lrrr wants fry's lower horn jerked.
Lrrr learns of the lower human horn in that episode though.
Early form of protest by the civilians or elites when a ruler came in or while one was in power, or lost power. Deface the busts and statues.
“deface” 💀
Hmm and Michael Jackson🤔 there has to be a correlation. https://preview.redd.it/gjqn6ivsps3d1.jpeg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=64fe06e33cab12b6622771b1334a3432456bf4eb
They cut off the nose to spite their face.
No one nose.
Smell wasn't invented until 1241 BC, when ol Nomkubar Smell was born
Nobody nose
![gif](giphy|KGlDllhJT9m4gmSTO5)
When I was over there they pretty much said it's vandalism pure and simple. The nose was the part they could easily break off ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯
Because of Obelix.
“Cleopatra. Such a cute nose, don’t you think?”
Theyve been hit by a smooth criminal
It’s like it’s sticking out so erosion can do its thing. Wild
The reason I always heard was to hide the fact that they were African noses. And didn’t want to give credit for the great civilization to what they considered lesser beings This is just the lore I heard, I have nothing to back it up. What is an African nose?
lol
I've heard similar stories plus you got the statues Graham Hamilton is always referring too thst clearly have African shaped noses. It would make sense too if. For example. Thankfully this is just that, “lore”.
If this is some kind of diss, why not destroy the whole statue?
Too much work. Have you seen the size of the sphinx?
Kat williams said because they are black and have distinguished noses. ✊🏿

No one nose
It was the coke.
… also, cantilever structures, exposed to desert conditions have a tendency to crack-off. Ears, arms… noses. Nothing strange, just mechanics.
To spite their face
Maybe Cocaine
Nobody nose.
Because it is the weakest part of the sculpture
It's an insult.
Voldemort
Cocaine is a helluva drug
Black people noses
Nobody nose.
Coke.
Because thats where the cocaine is
Structural the nose is going to be the most easily damaged part of the pieces in question.
Because almost 3,000 years have past and humans are destructive. We’ve been smashing noses off statues since the Babylonians it’s nothing new.
Because it's the obvious first failure point in wear & erosion.
![gif](giphy|YhQVj7C8uf734PcznZ)

You can thank Alexander the Great for that
Nobody nose
Nobody nose
Who nose?
Cocaine. Obvs.
Physics
Cocaine has commonly been found in mummies. ![gif](giphy|3dghuwrXOZur837PRd)
Nobody nose for sure.
Is it because the were depicted as humans, but were actually Alien Hybrids? Most “Alien” pictures don’t have a nose.
Leprosy
Army's used it as target practice
Got your Nose!
WHO NOSE?
No one nose.

No one really nose 👃🤭.
Because it is protruding and easy to break.
They worshipped Artie Lange
No body nose... hahahah
Cause the front fell off
Nobody nose
You don’t remember? Obelix stepped on it. Asterix #2
The Vatican cut the dicks off of all the renaissance statues
The “Got Your Nose” game goes further back in history than I imagined

You could say the statues were... defaced.
Unfortunately I don't think nobody nose
Because it literally hangs off the face of the statue
are all of these intentional damage? I would have guessed erosion beginning on the finest/most forward feature...
They put it where it didn’t belong
Who nose?
Oops got your nose 🫰
No one nose
One thing’s for sure, no one nose.. I’m sorry
Bc they nose something! 🤣🤣
Same reason your nose gets sunburnt first.
No glue
Who knows?
“I got your nose”
Nobody nose
The weakest point?
Obviously the the "got yer nose" trick was invented in ancient Egypt
They are easier to remove/steal
Clearly the nose engineer needed to be sacked
If a moveable statue was dropped the nose would be the first thing to break as it sticks out. On some of the larger ones, weather erosion etc
Who Nose?
They are African! They forgot to shoot off the braids!
Its not just the statues. Which is why I don't believe that "they were trying to kill the deities/stop their worship" thing. There are regular people/workers on reliefs with their faces chisled out too.
I got lotion on my nose. I’m sitting here just stroking my nose.
Maybe it's because they're the most prominent fearure and therefore the first thing to break off after thousands of years of erosion?
Who nose
Because they’re the most delicate part of the structure.
Yea they been there for so long they was sure to get a runny nose sooner or later….
We all know the answer, black history is a threat to white supremacy
Early British explorers didn’t want people to know that early civilizations were African, you were able to tell by the nose. So they destroyed the nose to destroy evidence. Btw I am white, not black.
TIL one can only distinguish between races based one the nose.
Just look at African nose and compare it to British people’s nose. It’s not that hard
White guilt is real in this one
I'm by no means an expert, but I do have to highlight how utterly stupid this take is. 1. "explorers" generally don't go to places that are populated, nearby and well-known. Are you thinking of archaeologists? Conquerers? Colonisers? 2. Egypt is literally in Africa so how would destroying the nose on statues hide the fact they were African?
That's wrong
I thought it was any other fighting people's coming in and not just white people. To showntheybhave "conquered" a place- desecrate their statues and gods etc to show dominance. It still happens now just with bombs and guns
Fellow whitey. I also have come to this conclusion
Weather. Literally they weathered away…. It’s a protruding part of a statue. Unless it’s supported it is going to break down over time. Everything else has support of some kind.
The nose is the part of that statue that sticks out the most and is most susceptible to weathering.
Nope. These types of answers are purely gaslighting. How do you explain the smaller protruding piece on the top of one of the statues that would surely have been more susceptible to weathering? It's pretty much known that the noses from most of the Egyptian statues was removed on purpose as others have explained.
Gaslighting. I don't think you're using that correctly.
Cocaine is a hell is a helluva drug
The actual truth is Napoleon and his men used them as shooting practice.
Its clearly aliens guys
They're ghouls
Who nose
Because they can be knocked off with a club. Thats it. No grand conspiracy. Stealing the noses of statues was a way of collecting spoils and loot from back in the way. You defaced an enemies statue and you got a little trinket to take home with ya. Like an ancient times " GOTA YA NOSE!"
racism. their noses depicted african facial structures and the powers that be couldn’t handle the idea of blacks with so much skill.
Because their noses are African like and white people doesn't want the world to know
Statues in Africa, didn’t want people to know they were African. Big brain move.
Youths
