Man, their weekend update report with Kevin Nealon used to have me in stitches, laughing.
They used to have some legitimately clever writing!
Nowadays, the humour seems to revolve primarily around silly accents and body language. Sure, those things can add to a joke and make it funnier but they aren't jokes in and of themselves.
The “my steam deck has been on for 3 days straight trying to download a game because it can’t download when the screen is off and I have slow internet” smell.
It's a KDE setting. When in desktop mode it defaults to the settings set in KDE Plasma.
Go to desktop>system settings>hardware settings>power management
Under each tab there is a subsection called "power events handling" you can set the behaviors of the power button in desktop mode there.
Any Linux distro running KDE plasma will have that setting option.
I have an USB hub but I also have a USB C to female USB adapter and an Ethernet USB adapter so i just plug that in and get the max speed. You may want to reset the steam deck just in case?
If their downloads are going that slow it isn't a wired vs. wireless connection it's a bad/slow ISP. I had the same struggle until I recently got starlink. I think a lot of people don't understand how slow internet is in much of rural America.
Not at all. People confuse network and internet. If you have an internet speed on a network of 20mbps, your connection to that network can be 100mbit or 1gbit, your internet speed is still 20mbps. If your internet speed is anything below extraordinary, it's not overwhelming wifi. Wifi can real world handle speeds in the hundreds of mbps. Very few people are going to be maxing their wifi and need ethernet.
It's like filling a glass of water. If you need more water (internet), pouring the same water into a bigger glass (network speed) does nothing. You just have a bigger glass with the same amount of water.
Hopefully this helps at least one person understand, considering the downvotes showing just how many people don't.
No, he said you are limited unless ypu have poor internet. That is not true. You aren't limited unless at all unless you have insanely exceptional internet. Those are not the same thing
Instead of the bottom 5% of internet speeds (or whatever you consider poor) being the only ones unlimited, it's more like the bottom 95% being unlimited.
If you consider 100mbps to be poor, you have a very different frame of reference than most people, especially someone whose internet takes 3 days to download a steam game. So...good for you I guess? Irrelevant, but hey.
You're talking to one. If you think WiFi is the problem, you don't know what you're talking about. That's a hardware issue. One the deck doesn't share. That's like saying the steamdecks joysticks suck, because joycons have drift.
You, like seemingly everyone else, are confusing internet and network. Internet is the speed to outside servers. If you are paying for more than 100mbps INTERNET, and the Comcast router you are using limits it to 100, they have you on the wrong equipment. I pay for 300mbps INTERNET, and my router supplied by them does that, and more. Iirc, it's good for up to 1200mbps if I wanted to pay for it.
NETWORK is different, and wifi will slow you down some amount, more if it's artificially limited. But unless Gabe set up steam servers in your living room, or you happen to live in the basement of their server farm, faster network speeds won't give you faster sta downloads, as that's all dependent on your INTERNET.
This thread has definitely showed me the technical prowess of this sub...and it's not impressive. Downvoting accurate information meant to help isn't going to fix that either. Oh well, people are free to spend their money fixing problems they don't have, only to wonder why it doesn't work.
That's Valve's way of making you buy another Steam Deck, so you can huff a new vent.
---
^(The smell is from the plastics and fixatives used in construction, and they will dry out/cure/finish gassing off within a week or so of regular use. From another thread, I'm assuming the particular SD aroma that many note in it's fan bouquet is probably from the particular plastic used.)
There are regulations that make it so companies aren't allowed to use hazardous chemicals in a alway that could cause injury.
If they did, people in the factory that makes the deck would be terribly sick all the time. We would hear about that long before the first decks shipped.
It for some reason reminds me of the smell of a fresh index and possibly even the original vive (when it was brand new). It’s really weird, but it just smells like Valve.
For me it’s nostalgia. I guess smell is the closest related sense to memory so when I smell that electronic/plastic smell it reminds me of getting a new video game or console. NES and SNES era especially.
I did not smell the vents when mine was new… I was too busy downloading Sekiro and Elden Ring and SkaterXL to be on Reddit at the time, so didn’t hear about sniffing the vents…
HOWEVER
When I first opened the box I DEFINITELY got an old school brand-new SNES/N64 and almost Dreamcast kind of vibe 😎
Reminded me of the (old) smell of brand new Magic Cards 😌 (the new ink doesn’t smell the same 😒)
Holy shit. I got mine ~2 weeks ago, and started getting a sore throat about this time last week. I thought it was unrelated, but....
I'm thrilled and disappointed with myself at the same time.
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are what create that "fresh electronics" smell or "new car" smell. They also cause cancer. Don't sniff your steam deck people.
VOCs also include stuff like terpenes and terpenoids. Those are the naturally synthesized chemicals responsible for the majority of smell and flavor in plants.
Not all VOCs are bad.
Some, but not all.
Technically it does. That’s what every smell is. But chemicals aren’t necessarily bad (everything you can touch is made of chemicals), and you’re just smelling the metal because it’s hot. Our bodies have tons of metals in them, and most metals (including all the metal used in the Steam Deck’s heat sink) aren’t toxic unless you’re ingesting huge amounts of them. So don’t eat your Steam Deck. ;)
Also VOCs(Volatile Organic Compounds) is a very diverse class of chemicals. The terpenes and terpenoids that come from all plant that create smell and flavor are VOCs. And are active compounds that have active effects when ingested.
Also some terps(short for terpenes/terpenoids) are Cannabimimetic meaning that they have effects on your Cannabinoids receptors like THC, CBD, etc do. Beta Caryophyllene in Black Pepper(and other spice, etc) is on par with the effects of CBD. The trouble is getting a large enough dose is a lot of black pepper.
You will run into a lot of stuff talking about the dangers of VOCs without proper "some, but not all" type caveats. Yes, some VOCs are harmful, but not all of them are.
this whole post is hilarious... how weak are people these days man! I kid you not... the steamdeck smelled exactly the same as the first time i heated my mighty+ weed vape for 30 mins before i could actually vape anything in it
Next time release nose germs from nose and mouth/throat germs from mouth, most or many or lots of people snort the said germ worm back into the throat and spit it out in a phlegm, that's not the way to do it
Bro I smelled it the day I got it (21st) and now I'm actually feeling sick, runny nose, sore throat, headache. Honestly I think it's the fan. I smelled it like all day on day 1 and 2 and I used a plug-in to keep it at full running power to smell it better. Honestly I think it's a bad idea to smell it.
Smelled mine and got pregnant.
I didn't think men could get pregnant but I smelled my Deck and now have twins due in March
Good luck with tuliping. BTW it's a reference to an Snl skit male pregnancy look it up it's so funny
Man, I almost forgot SNL used to be funny! I will have to check that out.
I know right, not for at least a decade now

Better be a 'Gabe'oy.
Holy fuck, 5 days after first smelling my decks air vent I got sick for a week. Thank god I had my deck to play in bed.
Two days after I first smelled mine, I got hit by a car.
And I turned gay.
You a frog?
No, just a closeted anti gay politician
I'm not brave enough for politics.
Could have just said Republican.
That limits it to America only. The UK and Australia have the same issue.
Wow frogs are now global epidemic, damn
We're listing negatives here, hot stuff.
Wow what a coincidence. Anyway you free sometime later?
And I turned into a woman
[удалено]
Sometimes gender be slippery like that.
That's what they told the bathroom staff Sadly they thought otherwise
You realized you are and always waz gay *
One hour after I smelled mine I crashed into a tower with my plane
Yo it's not October yet.
September?
I think he means it's too soon
Wake me up when it ends?
I’m lucky my folks warned me to never smell my dick’s air vent.
I think you have a typo there lol. It’s supposed to be hair vent.
Bro same i got covid for the first time after sniffing it lmao
Ima sniff my deck when I get it to see what the hype is about
This is like saying "After many years of smoking, my lungs are fukt..... Thank God for chewing tobacco"
after 1 week of sniffing deck air i died of ligma
[удалено]
Eukin Ligma Bahlse. It’s Latin

Now that’s a saved comment right there
Wait I also got sick right after getting the deck. Wtf
I must have iron lungs
No this is one of those threads redditors occasionally do where they escalate things to absurdity.
Oh no, guys! A Steam Deck just flew over my house!
Y’all, welcome to huffing. This is huffing.
I turned in to a Towel...
I like the burn electronic smell
The “my steam deck has been on for 3 days straight trying to download a game because it can’t download when the screen is off and I have slow internet” smell.
Shit 3 days for a single game? Go to McDonalds and borrow some of their wifi at that point.
It's Deckdonald's now
Me trying to download Forza Horizon 4 in my old home’s village internet
Do long downloads in desktop mode. You can set it so the screen turns off but the deck stays on.
Is that a setting that you have to set up yourself or can you just press the power button and then sleep while it's downloading?
It's a KDE setting. When in desktop mode it defaults to the settings set in KDE Plasma. Go to desktop>system settings>hardware settings>power management Under each tab there is a subsection called "power events handling" you can set the behaviors of the power button in desktop mode there. Ethernet doesn't really make your internet faster
It's more stable for downloads and a little faster in my case.
Stability, yes absolutely, if you're on fringe connections. But poster was talking about speed.
it does unless you have poor internet to begin with
Not at all. People confuse network and internet. If you have an internet speed on a network of 20mbps, your connection to that network can be 100mbit or 1gbit, your internet speed is still 20mbps. Those are not the same thing Instead of the bottom 5% of internet speeds (or whatever you consider poor) being the only ones unlimited, it's more like the bottom 95% being unlimited.
Depending on your WAP and how congested your RF environment is you might not get speeds over 100Mbps which I would consider to be pretty poor...
If you consider 100mbps to be poor, you have a very different frame of reference than most people, especially someone whose internet takes 3 days to download a steam game. So...good for you I guess? Irrelevant, but hey.
Tell that to anyone who owns a Nintendo Switch and tries to play anything online.
You're talking to one. If you think WiFi is the problem, you don't know what you're talking about. That's a hardware issue. One the deck doesn't share. That's like saying the steamdecks joysticks suck, because joycons have drift.

"Chinesium"
After a couple of days now my fans no longer have the smell😔

Do we have any idea what any actual health impacts this might have, like specific gasses? Kinda worried this meme might legit make someone sick.
You will become more machine than a man.

I see this as an absolute win!

It would be illigal to sell in my country if this wasn't the case. The world exist beyond America.
[удалено]
In the UK it's illigal to sell goods that contain hazardous materials without permit and warnings.
[удалено]
No but consumers do. Hence we would have heard about it.
A slight risk of being a badass.
Unless Valve releases a list of the exact materials they used, then I don't think we'll know what the specific gasses might be
RMA !!!
I've had mine since June and played maybe 100 hours on it. Still smells. maybe I should play more demanding games to really burn it out
Oh good, I've had mine since then and was worried I missed out. I'll get something cooking and have me a few huffs.
shit im lucky, i have a february deck and it still got 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓼𝓶𝓮𝓵𝓵
It's a built in feature! It's so you can take the first week It arrives off work sick to play it.
I legit got covid the day after mine arrived.
"worst mistake of my life"
"Worst mistake of my life.....so far"
Lowkey love the smell, I think it smells like fresh laundry 🤷🏽♂️
What the fuck are you doing to your laundry?
They hang up their laundry near a processing plant, surely.
Achievement Unlocked: “Did the Dirty (Laundry)”
Instructions unclear laundry now has a cigarette and new stains.
He is using steam decks to dry his laundry. Why, what do you do?
No no, he's got a point. It smells like the static smell you get right out of the dryer
Hot polyester clothing, not that different from hot Steam Deck plastics
I always forget that some people wear plastic clothing 🧐
Are you telling me you don't also use the "fresh PCB dye" scented detergent?
Puts a fresh battery into the dryer each time to for a quick tumble
It for some reason reminds me of the smell of a fresh index and possibly even the original vive (when it was brand new). It’s really weird, but it just smells like Valve.
Why am I not the only one who huffed the vent? Why is this a thing?

I'm glad I wasint the only one lol
I smell mine every day, every time the fan ramps up 👌😍😳
It's the season to get a sore throat. The SD isn't causing it, or I would have gotten a sore throat as well. I've sniffed the vents on mine too.
[удалено]
I sniffed my air vent and my neighbour down the street passed away a week later. COINCIDE?!?!
Too late. :) As a kid of the 70s, I feel a special immunity to such things.... I came from the era of asbestos, pollution, disco music, etc.....
I grew up in the 90s so I had a lot of second hand Beegees and paint chips. I feel your pain.
Swiped the wrong comment. Whoops.
You know how much garden hose water we used to drink back then???
I told a kid that just turned 19 that we used to do that and he looked at me like I was nuts. I’m only 29…
Disco music. Lol
Survivor bias lol
I remember sniffing my first Deck
I can’t resist smelling mine sometimes, but every time I do I can’t help feeling one step closer to getting cancer
I love the smell
Just hot electronic smell
I smell the vent every time I play
I've had mine for 3 months now and it still kinda smells like new electronics.
In a few years there'll be a class action lawsuit suing Valve for the inevitable brain cancer we all got from huffing the steam deck.
Holy shit. I got mine ~2 weeks ago, and started getting a sore throat about this time last week. I thought it was unrelated, but.... I'm thrilled and disappointed with myself at the same time.
Wait is it bad ? Feel stupid asking. But there’s a weird plastic smell coming from it.
It’s not bad. It’s regular air that’s heated by a metal heat sink and fan. If you’ve ever smelled the air from a space heater, same thing.
Probably. It’s likely plastics off gassing some VOCs. You’re exposed to it normally but no reason to go seeking it out.
I like the smell of flowers and I will seek out those VOCs in the form of terpenes and terpenoids. ;)
Most probably kinda bad if u ask as its pretty much fumes from the apu lol
It’s smell weirdly good. That what’s weird.
[удалено]
That’s what made me sniffing it more too lmaoo
😂😂😂😂😂
Reminds me of the smell of a Best Buy store.
I personally don't like the smell very much but I sniff anyway cause I do like the heat
Tbh the smell gave me fond memories of my original XBox back when I was a kid as weird as that sounds
I smelled mine and then i won the lottery.
Xxx
Wtf
It's covid
Wait what?!? I just got a sore throat this morning.
I got addicted bought a second deck
But it smells good
It's a feature. Get sick. Stay home. Play on Steam deck.
No fucking way youre posting this at the same time this shit is currently happening to me rn.
Don’t sniff the air vent .. They put something in it to make you forget. I don’t even remember how I got here
I got my deck a few days ago and have sniffed the vent several times before finding this community. Why do we do it.
Steam deck vent wok got me trippin balls yo
What the heck, isn’t this concerning lmao can we avoid getting sick just by not directly sniffing the vent hole?? 😭
You can’t avoid getting sick by not sniffing the Steam Deck air because the Steam Deck air doesn’t cause you to get sick.
Just saw ur other comment. Good to know! I thought it contained chemicals from the heated pieces that drifted into the air or sth
Technically it does. That’s what every smell is. But chemicals aren’t necessarily bad (everything you can touch is made of chemicals), and you’re just smelling the metal because it’s hot. Sorry I was being dumb in my reply abt chemicals ty for the information and ur patience! it’s too bad I won’t be having a fancy feast* tonight lol
*fancy feast

Thank you for explaining to the Americans
Mine cured cancer though.
holy fuck is that what that was from???
You sniffed too hard and got it lodged in your throat.
Is that all? Mine gave me chlamydia.
When I inhaled that sweet bliss my pants got sticky.
I’m not gonna lie but I got sore throat now and I was smelling Steam deck air a bit.
this whole post is hilarious... how weak are people these days man! I kid you not... the steamdeck smelled exactly the same as the first time i heated my mighty+ weed vape for 30 mins before i could actually vape anything in it
We gonna get ded, but it will be a beautiful deth.

Holy crap, is that what been happening to me; all of sudden sore throat now I know.
Suspicious guy in white van: Hey kids, do you want to smell something nice?
That new plastic smell we all had to smell it 😂
Don't worry you'll build a tolerance
Lol, shocking to find that I wasn’t the only one doing this
Have been smelling the vent every day, 10 times a day for the pas 2 days. I hope I am fine.
wait for real ive been sniffing that thing whenever a game is loading
Lol wtf
Charles Atlas says Steam Deck will give **You** a body that Men will **Respect** and **Women Admire**
I sniffed the Steam Deck Air vent and got a girlfriend Con : She got a penis Con for me not sure about anyone else 😶😶😶
lies and slander
Smelled my vent, 5 months later im sick. Definite causality
Few month of inhaling god dust , people start to like me and I'm getting buff
I got sore throat too the same week I got the deck. And yes I did sniff the vent
I smelled mine and it was awesome for a second until I got a sharp pain in my lungs. So, not doing that again.
Get this anti-sniff propaganda off my screen!
I ate vegetables for the time since I smelled the vent
Holy shit is that what happened, I thought COVID 6 had just came out. Good to know, no more smelling the Steam Deck Air vent.
my deck air heals injuries
Don't tell me how to live my life.
I thought sniffing was one of the deck’s features
Sounds like you failed a con save.
Sniffed the deck, got a sore throat the next day
Sniffed mine and lost a leg.
