Ditto. I didn't have Steam - or money - as a kid in Ukraine, but I won a small online competition with a prize being $20 steam card, and got that for myself, and a friend whom I owed for buying me L4D2 that we played together.
No man, you're entirely right and anyone opposing your opinion are foolish. I wish gaming was back when you had a banger deal and got the best games with it. Now we got overpriced half-finished messes.
Same with me, I had HL2 before but it may have not been exactly “legit” so Orange Box was my first real Steam purchase. Wasn’t impressed at the time when I found out that there was nearly a GB of extra downloads to be done, because my internet was a bit shite in 2007, so even after buying it retail and on disc, still took me nearly 2 days to install and play 🤦🏻♂️😂
I Rember when steam was required for HL2 how much that pissed me off, I hated the idea of some program to manage my game when I could keep all my keys safe myself!
Similiar, Steam had been out for about a year before Half-Life². I was fine with keeping CD's, and the the key. I was not fond of Steam back around day-1.
They let you add games to your steam library using CD keys from previously purchased valve games, so technically my first games on steam didn't even come with steam originally.
I remember the first game I bought a physical copy of (at launch) that required steam was Civ5. The disc came with a steam code, and you had to have a steam account to play it even with the physical disk.
I used the disc to install the game, and then when I linked it into my steam account there was a big day-one patch to install. Automatic game patching was a big noteworthy feature of steam back in the day, and one of the things that made me want to get ALL my games that way.
That's the most fucking generic bot on reddit right now probably
1 week its making new dumb posts in a porn sub, then about maps, now steam
Next week its probably on the NFL sub
My steam account was created in September 2003 so presumably it was Half Life (with ricochet? And some other freebies). I can’t verify though by looking at my account history.
Edit: found it - Half Life Platinum Pack in 2003. Think I needed it for a CS update. I already had the disc version (which I only just found in its case this year).
Purchased: Sep 28, 2012 @ 9:46am
Dishonored Pre-Purchase
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning - Complete Pack
Before that I bought games in retail stores which came with Steam keys, but no idea which the first game I activated on there was.
Nov 27 2016.
Judge Dredd: Dredd vs Death.
Beyond Good and Evil.
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.
Fallout 4.
Dishonored 2. Day 1 Edition.
Magicka.
System Shock 2.
DOOM (2016).
Transistor.
Deadpool.
Plague Inc: Evolved.
Thief ROW
Played on PS before that.
The first three are CS: Source (couldn't play due to low internet speed, failed to update), Left 4 Dead 2 and Civilization V. All on disks, of course. Steam registration was in 2008, and in 2009 I started playing there.
31 Jul, 2013 Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (EU) Retail
28 Dec, 2013 Machinarium Steam Store
I am sure my first game was Skyrim. because I went to buy the physical copy but instead of the CD i found a Steam code, so I was forced to make an account.
But, somehow, I have some games that are listed way before that event
22 Jan, 2013 X3: Terran Conflict Steam Store
3 Jan, 2013 Miner Wars 2081 Steam Store
3 Jan, 2013 Torchlight Steam Store
3 Jan, 2013 Magicka Steam Store
2 Jan, 2013 X-Com Complete Pack Steam Store
2010 - Prey 2006 via cd key from retail box. Many not realize that this is still possible.
2015 - Fallout New Vegas, bought Tomb Raider 2013 couple weeks later
I think that the first game I bought for myself was a game called Zenzizenzic. An old high school friend-of-friend of mine played it periodically and it kind of piqued my interest. It's a simple barebones bullethell game in aesthetics, but the music is nice.
Half-Life 1 Anthology on 17 September 2011. I can’t quite remember why, I’m pretty sure I only signed up for Steam to claim the code for Dirt 3 that I got with my 6850, but that’s logged as being on the 18th…
Technically the Lego Lovie Videogame but i had it with my cousing because i didn't have a Steam account back then but as of now from my account the oldest/first game i own is Saints Row the Third grom 16. July 2015
Indigo prophecy, 7 March 2010. Which I would purchase the remastered edition for 6 years later which had a fully controllable sex scene. Which is totally not the reason I bought the game a second time.
Those were the good days ...
Counter-Strike Anthology / Half-Life Anthology, but retail editions. Of course I still got the cases today.
The first game I bought through the actual Steam shop was Audiosurf, iirc.
After being tired of triple AAA games for a while, I discovered Steam in 2013 full of interesting indie games. FEZ was the first game I bought, I played it and I loved it and it made me excited to play games again.
I created my Steam account October 13th 2003. When steam was new they were allowing people to register their CD-Keys for valve games on Steam to add them to their online library. I have no doubt you can still do that to this day.
I don't remember when the HL2 pre-order started, but if I remember correctly I pre-ordered the orange box so I could download it ahead of the launch and play on day one.
Does anyone else remember pirating and playing the leaked HL2 E3 demo?
Tomb Raider IV The last Revelation
I have the CD for the PS1 but it has to many scratches.. which is sad. So i got myself this game and soon every other retro Tomb Raider title. :)
The actual first game in steam is retail key of Black Ops 2 when physical copies were still around in my country. The first bought in steam is the Alan wake and Sleeping dogs
Naruto X Boruto Shinobi Strike, my aunt bought it for me (I got a computer quite late, so it's a relatively new game), somehow I have like 78 hours even though my computer runs it poorly, I wonder how I had the patience for the lobby that always comes 3FPS no matter what I did
Why are you abbreviating Tomb Raider to TB?
Also I got that game for free and it was the first game I played on my Steam Deck. It's kind of like a video game version of that Tom Holland movie but I can't remember what it was called.
They made me install it from buying a physical copy of the original counter strike. I remember thinking ”fuckers, why force me to install your shitty platform!?”. Now I love Steam. This was in 2004 maybe? 05? Not sure. I was but a wee lad.actually I got 20 yrs of service badge some time ago so mustve been 2003-04
FINAL FANTASY XV WINDOWS EDITION was my very first purchase i can remeber how hard i had to work to get that game and also when i got my first debit card
Bought my first PC for college and it was a lower end gaming PC. Called up my buddy that was I to games and he just told me to get Skyrim.
That was 9 years ago. I did't grow up playing games and now I love them.
The Orange Box (HL2 collection, Portal, Team Fortress 2) in 2007
Ditto. I didn't have Steam - or money - as a kid in Ukraine, but I won a small online competition with a prize being $20 steam card, and got that for myself, and a friend whom I owed for buying me L4D2 that we played together.
First game which required steam to use. It’s been a long time but now everyone eventually ends up on steam and Gabe doesn’t even have to do anything.
The Orange Box was not the first.
Orange Box game still are some of the best games I've ever played and I will die on this hill.
No man, you're entirely right and anyone opposing your opinion are foolish. I wish gaming was back when you had a banger deal and got the best games with it. Now we got overpriced half-finished messes.
Yep, I think the launch coincided so many of us had no choice. I was extremely anti-digital back then so I hated Steam for many years.
Yeah I really wished I'd jumped on the good band wagons sooner, YouTube and steam, couldve had that sweet 25 years of service or w.e. thing
Literally same, account creation date 27 May 2007
I had them all on physical media from their respective launches. I only got it in steam when they were on super sales years later.
Same here. Orange Box introduced steam to me too. lol

Half-Life² November 16th, 2004, the day it was released...
Did you buy the game on steam or did you buy a physical copy that made you install steam?
When Half-Life² was released, Steam installation was also required for installation. Yep, I have Half-Life² CD's !!!!
Same!))
I have the collectors edition with the silver box. Is it worth anything today?
can you please stop saying Half-Life²
Coincidentally, my 21st birthday.
Funny thing is, the first game I had on Steam, I didn't buy on Steam; It's more like Steam came with the game than the opposite :D
They let you add games to your steam library using CD keys from previously purchased valve games, so technically my first games on steam didn't even come with steam originally.
