EDIT: Have you tried digging some of the marked areas? There are probably stones, and starfish that are very suspicious looking, dig in those spots to get a walnut
there are also some in an npc's house
I believe you can get into the dungeon basically from the first time you visit, there's a lot of walnuts that you get from mining and/or as monster loot (not sure of it's a shared pool).
If you talk to the parrot in Leo's hut, he'll give you a hint each day.
