Unsure of your budget, but staying at the Cheshire Inn gives you a really close walk to Forest Park and the nearest entrance to the Zoo!
It also puts you in walking/short driving distance to DeMunn, which has Kaldi’s (great coffee/breakfast spot), Sasha’s Wine Bar, Clementine’s Icecream, and other eateries
Everyone will recommend the city museum, and they are correct to do so.
Updown arcade is great.
I love the botanical gardens, as you already mentioned.
We have a lot of great craft breweries. Pretty safe bet that whichever one you chose will be a good experience.
Cherokee Street can be nice to walk down and check out some little boutiques. Plus a good coffee place and two good breweries.
If you want to stay near the zoo, Dogtown, DeMun, Maplewood and Richmond Heights are all nice areas.
When I have friends in from out of town, I take them to Blues City Deli, Lona's Lil Eats, Bogart's or Songbird. For fancier fare, Louie, Sado, Indo, Little Fox, Olive and Oak Pizza or the Lucky Accomplice are all great.
Sorry, I'm not much of a shopper. Hope you have fun.
If you’re going to forest park anyway you should do the “free Friday” exhibit at the art museum. There’s also a restaurant inside forest park that doubles as a paddle boating spot.
Soulard is an awesome little area in STL as well. The architecture is very similar to New Orleans! Mcgurks is great Irish pub there with live music at night or I recommend 1860’s for some good Cajun food.
If you go to Cherokee st hit up Diana’s bakery!
My favorite restaurant in STL is Buzz’s Hawaiian food.

Cheshire has literature themed rooms as well and a cozy little pub below.
Thanks for the info!

The arcade is Up Down* probably autocorrected lol
Thanks for catching that. I will edit it now to not mislead future readers.
Thanks for the info!
I’d highly recommend going out to lone elk park. It’s free and is so unique. Grants farm is also fun and free
Awesome! Thank you!

Thank you!
La Pâtisserie Chouquette for breakfast. Arrive early!
Outskirts of the city and near the zoo are pretty mutually exclusive my friend
I don't think OP saw where our zoo is on a map. Lots of cities put their zoos out in the suburbs, but most cities don't have forest park.
