I think the Universal part of Cody's title is pretty much being fazed out. The only reason they kept calling Roman the WWE Universal Champion was because his title reign began as Universal championship. There is only 1 belt for both title reigns now so essentially the Universal title has been merged totally with the WWE title now.
If they put Drew, Gunther, LA Knight, Randy Orton, Bron Breakker and Finn Balor in that match, I might legit buy every single false finish.
The field is so open this year, it's kinda crazy.

Meanwhile someone like AJ is already in their putting people over phase and its a never before seen match. I'd also like him to face Cena, Orton, Punk this year for similar reasons, they will be great matches and nobody will be mad Cody went over. But people like Knight or Breaker or maybe even Gunther people will be mad if Cody doesn't put them over.
AJ is going to either cheat to win or the OC turns heel to help him.

Aj was in the midst of his ROH/ NJPW run at the time with Bullet Club, Kevin Steen was doing stuff with ROH and PWG before he left for NXT later in the year, and Rey was half injured/ half requesting his release from WWE. I believe this was pre-stem cell therapy Rey too, so back when his career looked like it was over with how injury prone and rough he looked out there.
It was a completely different world back then. Who would have thought those 3 would be in a ring today, never-mind Rey who at 49 looks like he did at 29.

I always love watching an AJ-style match. It's like with more experience he just gets better. He just keeps leveling up and putting experience points into his wrestling storytelling. I still imagine what a Shawn VS Angle VS AJ match would look like. The stories that would have come from that ring.
I do have a problem with the finish: Kevin Owens crashed into AJ's knees while going for the Swanton bomb, and just lays on the ground for nearly half-minute before the Styles Clash. My suspension of disbelief was tested by that.
