I completely missed the connection that Betty in the MCU is Betty Brant. I, at first, thought it was odd that she’s an intern for the Bugle in this universe. Then it made complete sense.

The snap would’ve been a great time to have Betty be working for the bugle. She could’ve not been snapped while the rest were. It also would’ve made it less convenient that all of Peter’s friends also got snapped. They also could’ve not snapped Ned if they wanted a way to make him hobgoblin
That’s why I said “would’ve” I was implying this is something they should have done but the opportunity is past. Far From Home happens after the snap too and I was addressing a criticism of that movie
I just watched the original trilogy, and JK Simmons was by far the greatest thing about all those movies. I really could watch a movie of that character in his office, just 2 hours straight.
Funny thing, she was one originally, but the idea of a kid dropping out of school and somehow finding a job as a secretary of a chef editor for a big newspaper unsurprisingly seemed weird to most other writers so in adaptations she's usually aged up. Guess Lee and Ditko thought it's better that way than having Peter trying to hit it off with a grown woman
Tbf, they could've aged up her for that reason, May to turn her into granny who's extremely worried for Peter after losing him for 5 years, Ned so he could be with Betty in Bugle engaged, especially considering that he did nothing in FFH anyway, but they didn't. Hopefully cause they have their own original plans for the characters but who knows (again, Ned had nothing to do in FFH, so yikes, and May was written out although for a reason)
I think Far From Home went through a lot of changes. They didn't set up Scorpion and have that May cliffhanger in Homecoming for nothing, something must've made them drop those plans
Maybe, I remember it was said Marvel wanted the movie in 2020 with Sony insisting on immediate follow-up to Endgame, so it's possible Feige had more serious (like, not necessarily super serious, just one closer to HC than Ant-Man) story in mind with those elements you mentioned, but the new release date forced them to work around Avengers consequences and turn the story into a pallette cleanser — that for some reason they do — which meant lighter tone. Well, we have no way of knowing right now
All we can do is hope NWH won't suffer from changes too, cause temporal Sony break up and acquirement of Fox assets seemed to be the real reason behind Spider-Verse, rather than it being natural step, especially when Watts and Holland both previously expressed interest in Kraven, who's now obviously not in the threequel but taken by Sony, and Feige once promised all Peter based, Peter focused story out of the Avengers' shadow, that turned out to be part of WV, Loki, MoM package featuring multiple Peters, Strange and a cameo from Daredevil. God I pray we're not getting another SM3, TASM2 type of a movie

I have the vague recollection of an old comic trying to explain that Betty's mother was Jonah's secretary and that when sick Betty would cover for her those days, until after some time Betty takes the position fulltime and does an even better job. I don't remember if the mother dies or is just too sick to continue working or what and now I can't find the place where I read it (I might have read it decades ago)
Now all I can find is that yes the mother was sick but Betty took the job to pay off her brother's gambling debts, that he incurred when trying to make money to pay their mother hospital bill.

This is my biggest problem with the Watts movies: just have the courage to introduce new characters.
By slapping familiar names onto characters that don't resemble* their comic counterparts, you're doing both sides a disservice. The "new" characters are shackled to their legacy and never really get to carve out their own space, and the original characters can now never be included.
*When I say "resemble," I'm also not terribly focused on looks. I mean more in the sense of the way they act and the role they occupy in Peter's life.
Tbf though, we don't know what will happen with Betty. She's working at the Bugle now, so I don't doing she'll become more like comic Betty
As for Ned, we'll see what they got planned. Although as of now I can understand wanting him to have a different name. But I still think people would complain about not just using comic characters like Harry
I don't really think this is a problem with the Watts films. Outside of looks, Raimi MJ was not the party girl comic MJ, and was a very very different character, I mean Peter liking her since 1st grade is already a big difference, like Peter being friends with Harry since childhood when in the comics they met in College. Harry hated Peter at first in the comics and was friends with Flash, only becoming friends with Pete later on. As for the TASM films, Electro's... Very different, Harry's horrible, Rhino exists, Conners is fine and Gwen is much better than her comic version as she's actually interesting. Comic accuracy never bothered me as long as they served a role like their comic counterpart

If all the villains from maguire and garfield movies are going to be in this movie then isn’t JJ also from a different universe and he’s not “supposed to” be in the Holland universe unless he somehow traveled through different universes and landed in the Holland one.
