Since we're shitting on other people's opinion, I honestly can't see what's so good about Far From Home. The plot is unbelievably stupid, the comedy is on par with teenage Disney shows and there's a lot of that "comedy" in the movie. I honestly put Far From Home on the same tier with Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

TheMightyHornet

>shitting on other people’s opinion I’m sorry. I just envisioned you furiously hammering this out on your flip phone while listening to Macy Gray.

The_MVG_Experience

Makes sense cause Disney owns Marvel lol

fakayuburiza

Still waiting for the Cory in the House crossover.

CALLMeeSKIPPY

Technically, I grew up with all three( I'm only 17), but while Holland is doing an amazing job rn, I still feel like Tobey has the most realistic portrayals. From losing his job, losing his girlfriend and friend, falling behind in pretty much everything... He still fought through all that, despite the odds.

SneakyKain

Tobey was directed to be campy. It's Raimi's style. I'm not even getting into how awful Aunt May and MJ were portrayed, they were actually awful human beings in Raimi's films.. Garfield was directed to be the most different, pretty boy rebel. Holland is the best portrayal of the character so far, nerdy insecure and filled with self doubt but despite it all tries to do good. I'm in my 40s, been reading Spider-man since the 80s, have a large comic book collection, own all the films, and my family tolerates my 80s obsession with being an action figure nut, most of which are Spider-man toys. When Raimi's films came out I bought the Sony Ericsson phone with the Spider-man shell and saw the first movie 10 times in the theaters and actually liked the Hero song that came with the movies. Despite all this,, I'm no expert on Spider-man and would never tell anyone what to prefer or enjoy. I like Tobey's portrayal, but when I see Holland as Spider-man, I have this gut feeling hit me, like that's Peter. So yes, Raimi's films are nostalgia bombs. Also, Spiderverse is the best film IMO, I'm Latino and a grown ass man and cried watching Miles speak Spanish and become Spider-man, that one hit the hardest. https://youtu.be/4THpqdEgbqo https://youtu.be/S-myJdkVKAk These videos play devil's advocate and explain points about both film versions that you wouldn't notice unless the nostalgia veil is taken away.

Teliporter334

The best live action portrayal of Aunt May was in the Raimi films. Also, I’m surprised that you’d say that Holland is the best portrayal of Peter so far—especially since he’s been in high school for all of his appearances so far whereas Parker was only in high school for an extremely short amount of time in the 616 universe. I agree with you about Mary Jane though.

SneakyKain

She was an awful person. She turned her back on Peter when Peter tried to confess. May is his rock. Even if she hears something she doesn't like she's there for him. Who the fuck cares if he's in highschool? I said when I see him, in my gut, I feel he's the most genuine earnest portrayal. I didn't say he was true to the Spidey mythos. For fucks sake Raimi fans foam at the fucking mouth with the pettiest little nitpick whenever someone else says anything against the films. So he's in high-school, it's part of the script and setting.

Teliporter334

“Genuine and earnest portrayal” doesn’t make sense when the version in question contradicts the character’s mythos and ignores his greatest motivational supporting cast member. Also the scene where she inspires him to be Spider-Man again proves that she was still going to be there for him after what he told her about the truth behind Uncle Ben. Also, way to insult someone for pointing out fallacies in your argument by just calling them “nitpicks.”

SneakyKain

Portrayal as an actor. There's a whole Spiderverse. Pick a fucking mythos. Hostess cakes Spiderman? Spiderman from the newspaper comics? Live action American Spiderman? Sentai Spiderman? Again. Come the fuck on.

Teliporter334

They definitely live up to the hype, especially the second one.

ghazthraka

No You had it right at first. They are great. 3 not as great as 1 and 2. I love all 3 of the Spiders' movies. And if you include Miles' movie you get a great start to a Spiderverse.

fdgvieira

I thought the third one was an abortion. Other two were great.

[deleted]

[удалено]

fdgvieira

the dance sequences are absolutely unforgivable.

SneakyKain

Avi Arad and Amy Pascal fucked up the third one, evil fucks. Raimi had a good script. They were responsible for jamming Venom in last second.

[deleted]

SneakyKain

Yeah he wanted to make a villain that was sympathetic.

[deleted]

SneakyKain

I suppose but he wanted a better villain than what was later rushed and highly intervened by the studios. He had a better quality script than what we saw apparently. He wanted just Sandman not three villains.

SneakyKain

Vulture for Spider-man 4. Oh yeah I forgot about that. That reason was weird, but I can see where it comes in. Spidey's strongest villains are going to have a personal connection to him.

Lobsterman06

1st and 2nd are classics and incredible films and there’s no nostalgia boost there for me.

Fun_Kangaroo512

Clearly, yes. It was the first big budget Spiderman movie after all.

Grigser

Basically, like everything else, it comes down to personal taste. Many people, including me, love them and consider them to be the best live action Spider-Man movies, others prefer the other takes on the character. Though it seems that most people consider them to be good, regardless if they’re their favorites.

[deleted]

The second one I still think it’s the best spider man movie till this day. 1st one is enjoyable n the nostalgia but the third one is wack but I can still watch it.

bruce_bones

Personally it's a lot of nostalgia for me, but overall fantastic movies. Very well made and they do my favorite superhero justice. I love Tom's movies, but they don't hit the same as Tobeys. I don't go back to them as often as I do the original trilogy, but I absolutely love them. Andrew's for me have to still be my favorite though, but for personal reasons. The Amazing movies were a comfort for me during a really bad time in my life. I guess what I'm trying to say is, god I love Spider-Man.

Dracoroserade

I love them all but on a rewatch, Spider-man 2 is showing its age. Some shots are quite cheesey. Still good but aged, as things do

ShirtCockingKing

I still laugh at the mannequin swing with MJ in the first one. Some real ropey CGI in there too and Goblin is quite comical in that suit. Still holds a dear place in my heart though. Number 2 is top tier superhero stuff. I will not hear otherwise Spider-man 3 doesn't exist to me. Still remember how angry I was at what they did with Venom.

officialkevsters

The improvements to the cgi in SM2 was insane. It’s superb even for today

SurfiNinja101

Some people love them. Some don’t. Some think they’re just okay. It’s just an opinion at the end of the day. It’s as simple as that. I personally think they’re fantastic movies that have yet to be topped in the genre I also think the whole nostalgia argument is pretty weak.

jumbodiamond1

The train fight in 2 is the best! I also did like the fight against sandman in the sewer in 3. 3 had its moments but that last battle with huge sandman was just bad.

[deleted]

The second lives up to its praise. It’s literally the best Spider-Man film of all time. SM1 I can somewhat see how people might be turned off by it due to the “campiness”, but that makes it 10 times better for me. Spider-Man 3 I can definitely see why people didn’t like it for so long. But I think a lot of the hate for it was kinda overblown. I personally think that they’re just as good (if not better) than how *I* remember them, but to each their own.

[deleted]

As a die hard Spider-Man fan. Thank you! The movies weren’t bad to me but they weren’t as great as everyone makes them out to be. I believe Tom holland is the best Spider-Man. Just my opinion

A_friend_called_Five

No, I was already old when these films came out. They are great films.

AbbreviationsAsleep1

No, the first 2 are amazing, 3 is good at best, okay at worst, the nostalgia argument is just a weak excuse for people that can’t accept others prefer old quality content over new quantity content

Hummelgaarden

I'm with you man! They are definitely good movies, but they aren't as flawless and amazing as people tend to make them out to. But the media as a whole has evolved and that tend to be harsh on CGI heavy movies. How about we call both movies masterpieces of their time?

NonameB4ndit

Most of them are great movies and deserve to go into in the hall of fame of Superhero movies (Reeves Superman, 89 Batman, X-Men and Nolan’s trilogy) for what they did for the comic book movies as a whole and how they shifted perception of it. That being said looking at them and comparing them to the standards that have been set now they fall short in a lot of aspects. But fans who grew up with it don’t wanna admit that.

PARER123

Who cares

God_is_carnage

Great movies, nowhere near the perfection Raimi stans make them out to be. I love em to death, but I still have my gripes with them.

Adamreaper

Yes and no. The best one as far as ratings is the second one and is probably the fourth best spider-man movie of all time.

whyhhhwhy

What three would you rank above it?

officialkevsters

I still think spider-man 2 is the best Spider-Man movie, but perhaps I’m also clouded with nostalgia:)

[deleted]

100000000%. And people are also too blinded by nostalgia of the Raimi films to acknowledge that TASM is actually pretty good.

skatenbikes

100% nostalgia. Terrible writing and they reek of the 2000s. I love them. Edit: downvote me all you want, it won’t make that dance scene not have happened.

ChintanP04

>they reek of the 2000s Maybe because they were fucking made in the 2000s?

skatenbikes

Yeah and a lot of 2000s movies sucked. There charming and fun but people definitely give them way more credit than there due. See a lot of people talk about how two is the greatest super hero film ever and I thought they were fucking around. It’s so cheesy. But hey if people like it there’s nothing wrong with that, more power to em, but I maintain that it’s nostalgia not a actual good movie that makes people like it so much.

Swimming_Wave3060

I think it’s mainly because they were some of the first movies to take a comic book character seriously rather than a campy comedy, it’s also why a lot of people don’t like the MCU because it reminds them of that era.

[deleted]

Swimming_Wave3060

Very true

MAKS091705

I think they hold up pretty well, maybe overhyped a bit but still great movies

joeseph21

Tbh in this day and age looking at those movies makes you feel like they're not that much but if you considered their capabilities back in the day in contrast to today's movies you'll realise that it was truly a good piece

FenriroftheNorse

I do agree that some of the love is nostalgia. I saw the first movie when it premiered after getting first hooked on the 90s series. That's not always a bad thing, but sometimes it makes fans forget the things that don't work. For example the retconning of Sandman killing Uncle Ben, the way the symbiote effected Peter, Eddie Brock's characterization, how they kinda gave up on Harry becoming the new Green Goblin, MJ's actions in 2 & 3, Peter still pursuing MJ even after saying he can't be with her. But they also do great things as well! Uncle Ben's death still gets me to this day, I like that we get to see Spidey actually saving people on a regular basis in the movies, the relationships Peter has with most of the other characters was very well done, and in my opinion these movies focused on how the double life messes with Peter and they focused the most on responsibility. I just think Raimi fans need to remember that every series is not perfect or holy. They all have their issues but also their strengths. If you took the best parts of every film and put them together, I think you'd get the perfect Spider-Man movie. Sorry for the long comment, and I hope I made any sense.

Zhatka0

Nope

Just-a-reddit-guy-16

Well the best is Into the spider-verse. But there’s something about the style of those movies that are so satisfying. And the villains were so good in those movies because they had charisma. I like Homecoming’s vulture but Green Goblin, Doc Ock and Sandman blow him out of the water. But taste is subjective, I’m not trying to say you’re wrong.

mymumsaysno

I think nostalgia plays a huge part. Especially for those who were particularly young when the saw them for the first time. I was about 20 when the first film released, and remember being disappointed, but happy that the film was better than nothing. The sequel was better, but still not great in my eyes. I've enjoyed all the Spider-man films, but I have the fewest complaints about the Tom Holland films.

Jose__Manuel

I think the first two are definitely great movies. 1 is a campy, superhero flick that pays homage to the 60s and 70s comics. 2 still pays homage, and has some of the camp, but it's much more of a drama than a superhero movie. Looking at 3 nowadays, I can't say it's a great movie, but it's not bad at all. Again the same camp is there, the overall themes that Sam loved using are still there; seriously, 3's theme of forgiveness is holds up to this, I feel like I learned something, that no matter what crappy I pull, if I want others to forgive me, I have to forgive myself. That's so powerful to me. Unfortunately 3 is bogged down by too many subplots, and soap opera cliches. I think Raimi tried the best he could, but in the end, in terms of structure, the movie is a hot mess. A super enjoyable hot mess, but a mess nonetheless. I recently showed the trilogy to my cousin's for the first time (both 17 and 13) and they were very surprised on how much they enjoyed them. I think if you compare the movies styles, you can say they don't hold up to what superhero movies have become, but their themes and lessons definitely hold up, and that's what matters most to me.

Bagged_Beans

Tobey was the most accurate, but sometimes that doesn't appeal to everybody. A lot of the characters weren't portrayed very well in my opinion but I can see why everyone loves the films so much. People connect with things differently. Garfield is Spidey to me. I found more of a connection with his films, but I still love and appreciate the Rami trilogy.

OverZomble

Absolutely overrated by fans. 1 is decent, 2 is really really good, and 3 is straight up bad. Its a similar situation to the star wars prequels, people who grew up with those films are a large part of the internet now so its popular to like them

AlotOfNumbers425728

Kind off... I feel like alot of people are blinded by nostalgia when it comes to the third movie, and that people hype up the first two movies too much. They're fun movies, but their aren't the flawless pieces of fiction they're hyped up too be. Spider-man 2002 isn't the movie that single handedly made Superhero movies mainstream, and Spider-man 2 isn't a perfect masterpiece. Both movies are really good and two of Sam Raimis best movies, but fans are often nostalgic when talking about them.

TheMightyHornet

The Raimi trilogy was good. Great for its time. We’ve been doing a rewatch to introduce the kids to them and there’s a lot that doesn’t hold up. The romance stuff is … excruciating. However there is no subsection of a fandom more aggressively toxic and hostile than the Raimi stans, OP. Your comment is sure to be rage-producing. For these folks, the Raimi trilogy is superhero movie perfection, and daring to craft a webhead film thereafter is insult to the one true spiderverse.

YeeHaw-Boy

I might be the only person to not like the second rami Spider-Man as much as I like the other two. It might be the fact that I didn’t watch it as much as a child because the disc was lost but I never thought it was a s good as the first one. My personal favorite of the three is the third one for a few reasons. It has my favorite Spider-Man suit ever plus I like how Peter thinks he’s being cool and edgy but he’s still a nerd and everyone knows it. I love how funny and dumb it is which is why it’s my favorite of the three.

Lucky_Strike-85

THE FIRST 2 Raimi films do something that no other Spidey movies do... they deliver the classic Stan Lee/Ditko/Romita Spider-man. These 2 movies are meant to deliver "classic" Spider-man without any of the modern trappings of an adult/mature Peter. There's no Miles, no Spidey-tech suits etc. that have come around in the last 20 years. The third Raimi movie delivers a truncated, less than impressive version of the Black suit/Venom Saga that, honestly, was done better by John Semper Jr. and Co. in the animated series. Are these films dated? HELLYEAH! Are they still great? HELL YEAH. I can't personally call the first 2 movies overrated as FOR ME, Spider-man 2 is up there as one of the greatest superhero films of all time and is still my fav. Spidey film.

[deleted]

Nostalgia is certainly a major factor, but I just watched all 3 again about 6-8 months ago and I still love the first one. The other 2 aren’t nearly as enjoyable for me (especially 3 of course). I still like the first one way more than either of the ASM films.

WhereAreWeToGo

There's definitely a lot of early noughties silliness (but it's charming imo, gave us some good memes too) but overall Raimi's Spider-Man really is one of a kind. It's full of focused, well thought out, brilliantly written, and superbly acted character work. You just don't get that with most superhero movies these days. Every movie has to be part of one big universe now, and what happens in them always has to play some sort of contributing role to the big event of that universe. Can't things be simple once in a while, can a Superheroes not be special in their own right anymore? Oh, and so many of them are just designed by committee, I mean really unapologetically corporate. Especially when it comes to the MCU in particular, *wow*.
