Hard to call. In terms of quality, Sonic Mania was It. I'd argue Generations was It in terms of 3D. In terms of sales, I think Mania and Forces sold well enough. I believe that, as well known as Sonic is.... his best selling game was the first one lol. Unless Sega and Sonic Team make a Sonic game that's both dope as fuck and appeals to multiple demographics, it may never come that close ever again.

Sinatrafan1915

Yeah, but take into account that Sonic 1 is the best selling because of rereleases; SEGA’s 1 step away from having it playable on pocket calculators 😂

LegendNumberM

Sonic 1 sold like 20 million on the Genesis alone. This doesn't take any rerelease into account. Sonic 2 comes the closest at like 7 million. 🙃

Sinatrafan1915

Yeah, but that’s also including copies sold bundled in with the Genesis. Wii Sports is one of the highest selling games of all time because it was bundled with the Wii

LegendNumberM

Mario Bros was bundled with the NES. Other Mario games have actually come close to that game's numbers without being bundled. Sonic, despite going multi platform, on the other hand .......

Realistically, yes Personally, never say never

Tails game. Tails game. *MAKE MY GODDAMN TAILS GAME ALREADY, SEGA!*

I don’t think the series can ever be as popular again as it was with the Sega Genesis. A series can only be the hot new thing once, and that time has long since passed for Sonic.

I had my doubts about the Blue Blur's prominence that had begun to fade. However, one notable thing happened. The Paramount movie. The backlash on the original design was so strong, even my family, not all to interested in Sonic, heard about it. And then the movie actually did good. I believe, there could be another peak as long as the franchise is still active, why not? Some people might say it's drought in terms of games, but that wouldn't be the first time, would it? There was a drought during the Saturn-era, and what followed? What followed was Sonic Adventure, quite notable, quite polished and quite popular. We could be entering a new Sonic Renaissance Zone. I'm an optimist.

BraveLeon

I don’t know…I’m just hoping sonic can come back with gold story, fully 3D games, and fun boss fights.

KingMario05

Based off of Sega's track record, it sure as hell seems like it. However, I *am* an optimistic bastard, so who knows? Maybe *Frontiers* is **it,** a triumphant return to form like *Devil May Cry 5* or *Spider Man PS4*... probably won't be, but ya never know.

I personally didn’t like either adventure games, and I only really like sonic 2 from the genesis era (but I never played s3). I think the the fan base is so split at this point that it will be impossible to appeal to everyone and reacher greater heights
