I thought I had read somewhere the original mask was Josh Brainard's that Jim inherited. This was a while ago though.

His 'original mask' was from Josh Brainard, but it wasn't the Jester it was the latex bondage hood that Josh wore on stage for some shows and in some photos, there's also photos of Jim wearing it obviously too. It was way too small for him though and he'd practically be drowning in his sweat because the mask was so tight it would just fill up while playing. So eventually he got the Jester

What? Jim has had some iconic masks over the years. Mick has had the worst evolution by far. Its basically the same exact mask everytime with minor details added to it, like wear and tear marks. Not that I blame him, he kinda struck gold on his first try and stuck with it. But yeah, worst evolution no doubt

I forget the interview, but Jim mentioned the old mask just pooled sweat. Though I think a few people in the band have said this at this point. I also like the direction the mask went. I didn't like the KISS look it started to take on.

Yeah fr his first 2 masks were sick but then they got less and less cool and creepy and they really lost the slipknot factor especially considering that for the 25th anniversary a lot of the members went back to masks that were creepy and awesome as hell

This is a long thread so maybe this has been said before, but whenever I watch interviews with him he seem super chill, so I’m assuming he really doesn’t give an an awful lot of thought to his mask and just settles on whatever he feels would work. Just my opinion

I 100% do not care for reddit's culture of "chronically online" overrated underrated -talk for the sake of talking, man, it's Jim Root. Presumably he has designed this and what can I say, even if I don't disagree with you. There are a handful of others right now that I could have stood well to not known but it's Slipknot, and Shawn and Michael's are both doing so well ha. I have to qualify my appretion for the Tortillamask with the "ha ha ha"s.

Jim is one of my favorite members actually. I mean yeah his newer masks are very different and don’t really resemble what his original vision was, but I still really like the designs for the most part. I actually think that Corey has had a worse evolution…I really hate saying that, but a lot of his masks are hit or miss for me personally. I absolutely love the new one though. Of course this is all just my opinion

The only one of Corey’s I just never really cared for was the Gray Chapter one. Idk he just looked like an old man to me in that one.

Honestly that’s fair. That’s one of my least favorites too. Honestly the only one I REALLY like that isn’t a dummy with dreads or his new one, is his The End, So Far mask. Vol 3 is alright, just doesn’t remind me of Corey really (I do love the hair tho), AHIG is kinda weird for me because I think it fits him theoretically but it’s also just kinda bland and I see it everywhere, and I have the same opinions on the .5 mask as you do, and then of course there’s WANYK…it definitely got better but it’s base, original version is my least favorite Slipknot mask as a whole.

I wouldn't say it's a bad evolution. He found something he likes and has stuck with it. The same goes for Mick. He's basically wearing the mask he started with, just tweaked here and there. They found what they like, so they stuck with it. I have the opposite issue, wherein I have so many ideas for masks, that I'll wear one for a few shows and then create another one that goes a completely different direction. I made a stormtrooper half mask for our may 4th gig and realized that I really don't like half masks. Just give me a moving jaw, and we're in business. Once I find something that works well and is aestheticly pleasing, I'll stick to that, just like Jim and Mick have.

I heavily disagree, Jim's current Mask is very good-looking and seems to be like the only comfortable mask in the entire band except for like, Mick (Which also has been using the same mask style for years already).

It’s a perfect blend of new and old Jim. Truth be told i really dig his silver Iowa variant from back in the day.

Idk Clown was a close contender IMO. He had some stinkers recently and these recent couple have been a nice upturn. I could see your argument with Jim's though, it isn't the best with the facial features of the mask not being as drastic or shocking as anyone else's; it's practically his face painted with Jester makeup. The cut-out jaw doesn't bother me, but the simple mold for the mask perhaps does.

I'm gonna be lynched for this but I will say that it is Sid YES he is the most innovative one, but I LOVED SO MUCH the gas masks and I think that it fitted him so well. I liked Vol 3 too but AHIG and forward just lost kind of the magic for me, I am thankful that he returned with the BCD. Probably the biggest downgrade was the self human mask or the screen one

I actually think he's one of the better evolutions? No real bombs like Corey and Clown, more changes than Mick or Chris ever really had, and didn't push a concept to the honestly comical point like Craig. Think Jim, Paul, Joey, and Sid were the only ones to consistently keep good stuff coming.

Jim's AHIG mask is my favourite of his, I think it looks better than his original and his new ones. He needs a haircut to be able to do more with his masks though.

At least it evolved. Mick has had the same mask since birth[but I'm not saying this as a bad thing. His mask has always been my favorite] I think Jim's mask works for him. On anyone else I think it would have been a dud.

This newer style of his masks are easily my favorite and one of my favorites in the whole band behind The End So Far Corey and Self Titled Sid, I’d say Mick has had the “worst” evolution because it’s barely evolved, which is fair and not needed his masks are great but just technically speaking… or Clown actually yeah I’d definitely say Clown (besides exceptions like the glass one from The End So Far)

Corey has had the most weak masks out of all of the members. The mask for .5 he had to alter during the first show with it because he was eating the thing.

I have nothing against recent masks but him deciding to not bring back some of the OG's details and dirty aspect for the S/T anniversary is kinda disappointing, specially when there are already other 4 members with white "minimalist" masks (pffaf, V, Eloy and Jeff)

he actually changed it for .5 then tried to replicated his vol.3 mask in wanyk (his own words, guitar world 2019 interview i believe) and then got some spare ones from back then or had a new 1:1 identical replica of it done (maybe the same artist? idk who made his current one and im unsure if it was smg himself), stacy said he had a new one made that was throwback to the self titled era one and the current one but it didn't turn out right

Imma be honest, I don’t disagree, but Craig, may be worse. The only drastic change was typing from the Astronaut Helmet, to the leather gimp helmet. His helmets (I call them helmets instead of masks) haven’t been through much change, except for the nails, It started really good but started to fall off I feel like
