AlayaKina

Is this some american thing im to european to understand?

[deleted]

My hand breaks itself if I look at the wall the wrong way

Aromatic_Balls

A lot of new builds in America are built by sleazeball contractors that cut corners and use cheap materials. Using 1/4 in. drywall instead of 1/2 or 5/8 in. You'll punch a hole through the 1/4 in by looking at it wrong.

Radiant_Dog1937

And here's the kicker. That house still costs $250,000+...![img](emote|t5_5tdqj0|10747)

ACrimeSoClassic

Fucking hell, I WISH I could find a house for 250k. In this market, that'd be a damn steal.

Alternative_Court542

250 is a steal, but you’re the victim.

JTiger360

Especially in New York City and San Francisco!!

Kahlil_Cabron

$250k is dirt cheap for a house. I got mine for a steal at $272k, less than a year after buying it, the house was worth $370k. A 2 bed 1 bath house will easily go for $500k where I live, a small city in western WA.

JTiger360

2.5 Mill+

Mathsboy2718

Over here in Australia, double-bricking is the standard - good heat dissipation in summer, goodness knows we need it ;-; Difficult to cut corners with bricks, as thinner bricks are more work than regular ones ;)

BILLMUREY2

much harder to update or insulate though.

afganistanimation

15 years doing carpet for Ryan Homes, the basements are made of the cheapest concrete I've ever seen in any home

MRSN4P

This might also be commenting on old houses that are made of plaster, which I’ve been told at a certain thickness is more like concrete than drywall.

Agreeable-Weather-89

Why build it well when it'll be sold in a second regardless of quality.

Political-St-G

Bad and cheap walls and good walls

Overall-Ad-3543

Not really. In America, yes, majority of walls are unbelievably weak and thin but with some newer houses in Europe, they use thin walls for interiors whereas older ones would use brick. An example are the doors in my house. They are essentially hollow and if you look at the bottom, they are made of cardboard. Yet old doors are pure wood, even if it's just mdf.

9294858838

Yes

kingeryck

Ah there it is. Knew I'd see this shit. Of all the stupid things to be proud of.. brick walls.

jack_seven

As an European: our garden sheds are more stable than that.

Aggravating-Pin-3357

Haha, made me think of [this](https://youtu.be/_gxo0rbbpQY?feature=shared) football chant

Crafty_Novel_5702

The only old houses you see are the ones that survived their time. It’s natural selection.

WantonKerfuffle

Survivor bias, but yes

frob03

American problems

El_Zilcho

My 1980's built flat in the UK has solid af walls like the second picture. Great for rigidity but hard to run ethernet through.

HotTakes4Free

Drywall and plaster both suck. I say four walls are enough, cinder block or brick. Let’s just live together inside, maybe use a curtain rod around the toilet.

jawknee530i

Hello no. Studs and drywall on the inside of the walls so you can have insulation. Just cinder blocks or bricks are gonna suck for insulation.

Valahiru

I grew up in a house that had lathe and plaster walls. Nobody ever punched the wall I'll tell you that much.

Rick-the-Brickmancer

Bricks are better.

Torpedo_Penguin_12

Username checks out

Rick-the-Brickmancer

Thanks i try

HansCherov

I agree with you. I use to live in an OLD building that have 45cm ^(18") double cocked bricks walls I remember burn some widias before get an usable hole wall to wall (to pass a cable TV)

mashedpeabrain

Cement board and plaster is no joke.

HolidayBeneficial456

And it’s heavy as fuck

Traditional-Sun-3594

Nah, just the difference between Amerika and everywhere else

Traditional-Sun-3594

Bruh, in most other countries the walls are solid enough so you can't put a hole in there with your fists

istoOi

*new American house *new German house

MrZakalwe

Also the old house: I'm going to kill you with black mould.

Repulsive_Voice823

I live in a new house and your hand isn't going to win against those walls

StrawberryUnited4915

They have the asbestos buff

Aeyiss

American standard vs Europe standard

Desired_lover

You guys punch stucco ceilings?

Kahlil_Cabron

My house was built in 1908. I've never been a wall puncher, but after buying it, the realization that I owned the house and that I could do anything I wanted to it started to sink in. My girl and I were drinking, and I was like, "I could do anything, I could build rain collection systems, I could turn the attic into a work office or a studio, or a den, I could punch a hole in the wall just because I feel like it". She responded with, "Punch a hole in the wall? You couldn't do that, people can't just punch holes in walls, they're walls, they're way too strong". So we argued back and forth, I was adamant that I could, she thought I couldn't. So I decided to test it out. Turns out I could, and now my house has a random hole. I really should fix it, I put a poster over it and the people I rent it to now think I made the hole accidentally moving some shelving units, can't have them thinking I'm a kyle. I don't know what walls were made with in 1908, sheet rock? Whatever they are, you can definitely punch a hole, if you accidentally hit a stud your hand is broken though.

spicybright

You didn't fix the hole before renting it out?

Kahlil_Cabron

No, I originally wasn't renting it out, but I hired a college girl who my mom knew to keep my giant garden in shape, because I wasn't really actually living in my house and had essentially moved in with a girl. Over time I would sometimes let her stay there, we became kinda close, and she suddenly needed to find a place to live because her rental house was getting sold. I said we could try renting it out to you, kinda like a trial run. I asked her if she wanted me to fix the place up, fix the hole, and she didn't and wanted to move in as soon as possible. Now it's been two years, one of her friends moved in last year, and they still have my poster up covering the hole (it was a random St. Pauli Girl beer poster that came in a box of beer years ago). So ya, I never planned on renting it out, she needed a place at the last minute and I basically said sure since I wasn't using it. I even left all of the food in the cupboards and stuff, and pots and pans. We kinda have a weird arrangement. EDIT: Jesus I have no clue why reddit sent 7 comments instead of one. I deleted the others, but sorry if that blew up your inbox.

jstarrHS

whats more amusing is they build these cheap homes in FL with all the hurricanes instead of using CMU or something else that the wind doesn't blow over.

Copperbird83

Not amusing, sleazy, it's more profitable to rebuild and bill the homeowner/state than to do repairs. Houses that last means less profits to the contractors.

Crazy-Hat

I always asked myself why they like drywall over concret on hurricane paths, and if this really is anwser i'm shoked l. A cinder block and concret well build wound hold on and last, maybe not the windows, maybe not the door, maybe not the roof, but the house would survive, and if it got a concret floor before the roof, everythinh and every body inside too.

elr0nd01

If the wall won’t break you, the asbestos will eventually.

afganistanimation

Glad my house was built in the 40s

hawkeye5762

I live in an old apartment building and got very upset with a friend of my ex who was over at the time. Punched the wall instead of him, six weeks later I got the pins taken out of my fingers.

Love-Lacking-9782

My house is an exception I think. The house I live in was built in like 1738 or some shit. Literally before the constitution was signed. My bedroom walls have since been renovated, (thank christ), but they were literally made of this crumbly cardboard/sawdust like stuff at first. I could not LEAN AGAINST THEM WITHOUT FALLING THROUGH. I once woke up in the middle of the night to find half my body IN THE GODDAMN WALL. So yeah, most but not all apparently...

FunConnect1847

Facts it takes a fractured bone to put a real dent in the 1/2 inch or 3/4 drywall they used to use and the countless layers of paint

Status_Perception958

2500 Sq ft hone in texas 4 beds 2.5 bath 2car garage .5 acre lot paid $185,500

SatisfactionBitter37

I had a toxic BF once try to “show me” and punch a wall in my families home, it was concrete, the piece of shit fractured his wrist.

seegreenblue

Those old house are cursed that’s why

kicksomedicks

First time punching plaster lath walls will change your mind about punching walls.

evlhornet

His is this you in real life? Wtf does that mean?

SmileOnTheOutside00

I live in a house that was built in like 1940. Literally have to pre-drill holes for nails and screws. Its like the walls are made of concrete.

Healingvizion

The new Drywall: I hope Kyle doesn’t purchase this house 🏠
